The following excerpt is from a news report on Yahoo News: KINGSTON, Jamaica - Hurricane Ivan lashed Jamaica with monstrous waves, driving rain and winds nearing 155 mph Saturday, killing at least two people as it washed away homes and ripped up roofs and utility poles but unexpectedly spared the island from a direct hit. A 10-year-old girl drowned in Old Harbor, just east of Kingston, and a woman was killed in the capital by a tree that struck here home, said Ronald Jackson of Jamaica's disaster relief agency. More news about the hurricane is available on the JIS website: www.jis.gov.jm Persons wishing to make cash donations to help the people of Jamaica may send a check to: The Consulate of Jamaica, New York 767 Third Avenue, 2nd Floor New York, N.Y. 10017-2993 Cash donations may also be sent to the Red Cross. Checks should be written to "American Red Cross - International Disaster Response Fund". Amounts donated to the Red Cross are tax deductible in the USA. Donors should note on the check that it is "To be Applied for Jamaica". Please continue to pray for our country. Please send this email to other Jamaicans and friends. Regards. DONATING FOODS and CLOTHING MORE PRACTICAL Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 12:34:16 -0700 (PDT) Greetings, This is Moor Sound. I was in Jamaica up until Sept. 2, 2004. Even during regular times things were bad. Even flying out of Jamaica was tuff on Air Jamaica. It took me two days to fly from Kingston to NYC. My luggage was even lost. Just terrible. With respect to June Royce people should donate food, clothing, medical supply and so on. It imore practical to donate goods over cash probably through the Red Cross, Salvation Army ofr some Church Organization. The poor people who need aid might stand a better chance of getting it... June Royce should be sending people to a drop off center. Not encouraging people send cash... Artist Bios: Mikey Dread: Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound that tells the listener emphatically that it is the "Dread at the Controls." Perhaps Mikey's work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned Punk Stars from London. Throughout the years 1998-2001 Mikey has been making impressive and captivating live concert performances with the Fully Fullwood Band across Hawaii and California. Most recently he has performed in Brighton, England with his UK Band "Colors" late October 2001 getting rave reviews and requests from other venues to return to Europe in 2002. His performances in Italy in November 2001 in Bari and Rome has re-established him as one of the original roots reggae icons of the mid-seventies/early 80s reggae era of Jamaican music. His mission continues, globally. Pablo Moses: Hailing from Jamaica, Pablo Moses released his first album in 1975, Revolutionary Dream and he has not let up since, bringing his messages of Rastafari to the masses. As a university trained poet, according to the New York Village Voice, Moses articulated his Rastafarian ideology with unprecedented political frankness in a horn-like voice. After more than twenty years recording and performing reggae music, Pablo Moses remains one of the most original out-spoken roots reggae artist in Jamaica, in part because hes still throwing out lyrics that are socially, politically and culturally connected. Moses is a teacher, a father and a revolutionary who never and will never deter from the path that he has taken as a voice for the poor and oppressed people of the world. Prezident Brown: Fitz Albert Cotterell, aka Prezident Brown was born in the green hills of Clarendon, J.A. As "Junior Ranking," a name his mother gave him, he would grab the mic and chant away at schoolyards and country dances. The biggest and most formative influence for the Junior MC was producer and sound system operator, Jack Ruby, prominent in the Ocho Rios music scene at that time. Ruby saw something special in him. He took the fatherless Slim Brown under his wing, re-christened him, Prezident Brown and appointed him resident M.C. of his Hi-Power Sound System, traveling worldwide. Prezident Brown's music speaks a universal language. All of his albums and singles will remain timelessly beautiful and his fourth album, To Jah Only, features one of the most spiritually devoted songs in reggae history, "To Jah Only." His music is echoed overseas and his talent is unequivocal. All of his albums are a must for anyone who loves reggae music. Prezident Brown is an artist driven by a sense of mission and purpose, which dictates that he "edutains" (heightens the consciousness of a people) as much as entertains.
