The Wailers blew through town last night and put on a great show at Mississippi Nights. It was a nice crowd of probably 500 people or so and the positive vibes were just flowin... The sound was awesome and the band was tight. Family Man was just layin low in the back and just layin down some wicked bass lines, as usual. The man is rock solid. Some people I've talked to aren't into it 'cause they think without marley it just isn't the wailers, but these guys do a great job and really preserve his legacy. and sound really awesome as well... Gary Pines was great on vocals. He doesn't try to sound like Bob - his voice is a lot gruffer - but he hits every spot and it was basically a 2 hour sing-along, as they just played hit after hit... Junior Marvin was on guitar, Drummie Zeb was there, Keith Sterling was on Keys, there were two beautiful female vocalists (and one of them was singing from a chair as she hurt her leg the night before), another guitar player and 3 horn players with Glen DeCosta and others (including a guy apparently from here who just got to play with them)... They started at about 9:30 and were tight from the start. Some of the tunes they played were One Love, No Woman No Cry, Rebel Music, Natty Dread, Roots Rock Reggae, Exodus, Kaya, Heathen, and an encore of Redemption Song with just Jr. Marvin and Pines, then they went into the full "band" version and it was excellent... Afterwards it was great talkin to em all. Family Man's a great guy, just smokin on the spliff, laughing. He kills me. Talkin with Keith Sterling was cool, as we talked of him playing on Nasio's debut like 12 years ago and he remembered it like it was yesterday. Drummie Zeb was real cool, too. they all were. Great band, cool people, just spreading Bob's vibe. It was a great night... reporting from the home of the best baseball team in the world, the Cardinals... Advance tickets can be purchased at the Record Connection, Cherry Records in Auburn, Love Shack Records in Nevada City and the Briar Patch in Grass Valley. In nearly two decades in music-making, Franti has grown from a black-booted voice of youthful rage into a barefoot clarion for social justice. In 1986, Franti formed the Beatnigs, whose black industrial sound deconstructed punk, rock and Reaganism with a leather-jacketed "No!" to militarism, racism and compromise. By 1992, Franti and Beatnig member Rono Tse became the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy with multi-instrumentalist Charlie Hunter (who has since become a renowned jazz guitarist). Their album Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury delivered assaulting Public Enemy-inspired beats and rhymes, but also offered naked songs like the self-probing "Socio-Genetic Experiment" and the movement-mantric "Music and Politics". Franti toured with U2, recorded with William Burroughs, and became a protest music icon. His next step defied expectations. In 1994, he signed to Capitol Records for his new band, Spearhead, and dove headfirst into his blackness, mixing up Mayfield and Marley, Scott-Heron and Scarface on hits like "Hole In The Bucket", "People In the Middle" and "Ganja Babe". Home and Chocolate Supa Highway sold hundreds of thousands of copies and Spearhead became a worldwide phenomenon. But by 1999, Franti had retreated from the major-label treadmill to re-center his music and politics. He returned the following year as an organizer and cultural worker tied to the rising movements against the death penalty, the prison-industrial complex and corporate globalization, voicing his observations through his music. 20009s Stay Human, co-released on his own indie label Boo Boo Wax and Six Degrees, was a statement on justice and survival, touching on issues like media monopolization and incarceration. With songs like "Sometimes" and "Every Single Soul", Franti displayed a new side. A vulnerable, articulate and expansive voice unafraid to embrace differences and envision the possibilities of another world, but also not fearful of speaking loud and on the edge of pacifism with the clobbering beats and lyric of the song "Rock The Nation." With the onset of family life and the climate of militarism, Franti has found a confident new voice and it shows. On songs like the simple, spare "Never Too Late", Franti reflects on fatherhood, life and untimely death in a voice supple and warm enough to carry his message. Musically, 3Everyone Deserves Music2 represents the most connected, developed work he has ever done. He composed many of the songs from the guitar up, and, like fellow 21st century cultural globalists Manu Chao and Ozomatli, continues to synthesize his eclectic influences. In a departure from the noise of the Beatnigs and Disposable Heroes and the minimalism of early Spearhead, Franti9s affirming lyrics are now set to appropriately swelling rock chords, while keeping a 21st century world-wise groove, nodding towards reggae, dancehall, bossa nova, Afrobeat, and funk.. Anthems like the title track "Everyone Deserves Music", "Yes I Will" and "Bomb The World" are constructed with a nod to the '80s rock of The Clash and U2, as well as classic soul from Stax and Motown. The wicked "We Don9t Stop" (featuring the Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Spearhead's rapper/beatbox technician Radioactive) even manages to bridge the two sounds in a 3Magnificent Seven2 style mash-up. And on "Love Why Did You Go Away" and "What I Be", Franti9s reveals an alluring, sensual singing voice. Two gems, "Pray For Grace" and "Bomb The World (Armageddon Version)"pair Franti with the reggae/funk giants Sly and Robbie (Grace Jones, Rolling Stones, Black Uhuru No Doubt), collaborations designed to move minds and bodies.Indeed, Everyone Deserves Music might be called a movement record dedicated to the preservation of "the motion of the hips." Franti9s revolution has never been this funky. His current project is called: Michael Franti - 3Songs From the Front Porch - An Acoustic Collection 3 "This record came out of a gentle place in my heart. I have been trying (like many of us concerned humans) to create peace in my heart so that I might ward off the frustration that comes as I read about war each day. I have been quite sad and angry. This record is my offering at the moment to those who are in search of mindful relaxation. I hope it brings all who hear it a moment of calm Michael Franti and Spearhead have toured relentlessly, headlining hundreds of shows for their legions of devoted fans as well as sharing the stage with acts as diverse as Dave Matthews, Ani Di Franco, Trey Anastasio (Phish), Ziggy Marley and KRS-One. Spearhead continues to hit the festival circuit worldwide, in addition to producing the annual 3Power to the Peaceful2 festival which drew over 60,000 people to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco last weekend. In both popular music and the peace movement, Franti has never been more relevant and influential than now. Lyrics from his song, "Bomb The World", written in the dark aftermath of September 11, have found their way onto protest signs and T-shirts all over the world from Los Angeles to Berlin, San Francisco Chronicle to CNN as millions have marched for peace. "You can bomb the world to pieces," he sings, "but you can9t bomb it into peace." "Right now, people ask me, 'What can one person do to change what9s going on with the world?9 I don9t know what one person can do except to connect with other people. In doing that, each of us play our roles," he says. "My role is as a storyteller and a songwriter. I9m somebody who is trying to keep the spirits of other people up, despite all the chaos and fear around us" For more information call 530-583-2801 or order tickets on line at highsierratickets.com, musictoday.com, jambase.com, jambasetickets.com, tickets.com or ticketweb.com. Though the island was spared the damage of Grenada, where 90% of the homes were damaged, the destruction in Jamaica is considerable. Reports are still not in from the eastern (St. Thomas, Portland, Port Antonio, etc.) or the western (Negril, Westmoreland, etc.) parts of the island which took the biggest blow. We have been unable to reach our friends by phone to get first-hand reports. Though some phones are working, as of Monday morning, power was out island-wide. Our homepage www.rastaheart.com THE PRIME MINISTER'S REPORT Here is an excerpt from Prime Minister, PJ Patterson's, address to the nation on Saturday "Hurricane Ivan was a devastating and destructive system that increased from a Category 3 hurricane as it left Grenada, to a Category 4 and 5 by the time it reached Jamaica. Jamaica can be thankful that it was spared a direct hit. Hurricane Ivan is now headed towards the North-west away from Jamaica, but the country is still feeling its effects, especially in Negril. The authorities are not in a position to provide clear estimate of damage at this time. A surveillance team will be taking to the air by chopper to do a reconnaissance as soon as conditions allow. No part of Jamaica has escaped damage." Our Home Page www.rastaheart.com IF YOU CAN HELP A special fund has been opened at the Jamaican Consulate for Hurricane relief. We will be visiting schools in Negril, Flagstaff-Maroon Town, Kingston and Spanish Town with various conscious reggae artists and talk show hosts. Our message again is to encourage them to exercise love, compassion and forgiveness in their lives. Abijah performing for students in Kingston www.onelovepress.com Special Leadership Event Jamaican talk show hosts Sharon Chambers & Antonnette Haughton On Oct. 21, we will have a special event for Jamaica's civic, business, political or religious leaders. It will be an evening of gratitude, music and inspiration. Many well-known Jamaicans who have supported our efforts will be inviting the leaders on our behalf. Excerpts from Robert Roskind's at the "Healing of the Nation Leadership Concert" October 21, 2004 Pegasus Hotel Greetings; This evening is the latest event in a continuous effort to encourage Jamaica to claim is destiny to teach One Love to the world. To this end, we have held over 40 school concerts in order to encourage the youths of Jamaica to exercise greater love, compassion and forgiveness. Also, through our public "Healing of the Nation:Hit Me With Music Concert" last year on Bob Marley's birthday, broadcast by most of your TV and radio stations, we carried this message to the general public. Now we bring this invitation to you, the country's leaders. And like all national leaders, it is you that can have the greatest impact on the direction--and destiny--of the island. If the captain of a ship turns the wheel only slightly, by the time that ship crosses the ocean it has landed far off from where it was previously headed. You are the captains of this ship of Jamaica and we are only asking you to turn the wheel ever so slightly so that Jamaica will land far away from the direction it is now headed. We are asking you as individuals to make this adjustment in Jamaica's course by showing demonstrable gestures of love to your people during this crucial time in the island's history. We are not asking you to become Jamaican Mother Theresas and give up all your possessions and personal ambitions to serve the poor. Indeed, we, too, are not prepared to do that. We are only asking you to show your people your love for them in whatever way you feel guided. We offer no suggestions. When you seek to show love, not in hopes of potential profits, or votes, or peer esteem, but to truly serve, you do the Creator's work--the work we were sent here to do--and you will be guided. Or as Leon Shenandoah, a Native American leader stated, "A chief must never forget the Creator...in our ways, spiritual consciousness is the highest form of politics." Use your positions as leaders to expand the consciousness of your people. It is the highest form of leadership. You are an unbowed and unbroken people, a passionate people, expressing greatness in spite of your constant struggles. Can Jamaica be the first society to heal itself with love? We do not yet know. But it can be the first to try and even that is a great honor. So we ask you again to join us in healing this great nation through your individual acts of love in whatever way you feel guided. Let this, too, be part of your personal legacy. We are planning to return to Jamaica again this year on Bob Marley's birthday to host a public "Healing of the Nation Concert" as we have done for the last three years. We also plan to declare this February 6, Bob's 60th birthday, as "National One Love Day" and once again invite all Jamaicans to help heal this island through their acts of love and forgiveness. If Jamaica can do it for a just one day, without large sums of money or complex government programs, just by individuals acts, then you can do it for another day, for a week, for a year, forever. We hope your efforts, as the island's leaders, between now and February, will set the pattern and lead your people into this national healing. We all hope and pray this healing will manifest through lower crime rates, a more vibrant economy and better vibrations island-wide. We would all like to see that. But we also must remember that no matter what the observable evidence, every act of love is inherently of great value, not only to the recipient but to the giver as well. As Marcus Garvey said, "The ends that you serve that are selfish will take you no further than yourself; but the ends that you serve that are for all, in common, will take you into eternity." For Immediate Release: September, 13, 2004 (Miami, FL) - Miami based, Eight76 Records, will be donating one dollar of every ticket sold to the JURA (Jamaica United Relief Association) from this Friday's "Night of Serious Vibes" concert in downtown Miami at the James L. The September 17th live concert will be headlined by three of reggae's superstar artists: Luciano, Barrington Levy, and Half Pint. Other acts on the lineup include Professor Nuts, Mikey General, Dean Fraser, Evette, Fyah Blaze, and Meeky. Myshjua Archibald, Eight76 Records co-owner and "Serious Vibes" concert co-promoter states, "Many of us in South Florida have roots in the Caribbean, and our hearts and thoughts have been with our families and loved ones in the islands. We are quite fortunate. The sound of gentle rain on a zinc roof may be romantic, but the creaking and groaning of zinc and deadwood fighting to keep it together in 100mph-plus winds is beyond frightening. Rebuilding has to be a combined effort. We are our brother's keeper." Jamaica and the Caribbean basin has sustained major damage form the recent hurricanes in the area over the last month and major emergency relief efforts are needed immediately. This past weekend, Jamaica was one of the Caribbean islands hit hard by Hurricane Ivan, a category five hurricane (strongest on the Saffir-Simpson scale). There is extensive damage to the island with over 20 deaths and many thousands that are homeless due to the catastrophic winds and flooding. The relief efforts are needed for the re-building and aid for those left in the wake of these major hurricanes.
