Two big riddims dominate the NM Reggae Dancehall Charts for the month of march: H2O's massive SLOW BOUNCE and 357's follow-up to the SCOOBAY entitled BOMB-A-DROP. The latter nearly topped the charts with Vybz Cartel's "No Apology" at #2, followed by Cobra's WICKED "Dem Fool Deh" at # 5 and further cuts by Tony Matterhorn & Beenie Man. The smokin' SLOW BOUNCE also fared extremely well, led by Bounty's "Pum Pum Mechanic", to be succeeded by Nicky B, Tami Chin and Vybz Cartel. Great stuff! The KOPA runs things again though, and with a slew of new tunes released on the riddim (including material from such stars as Sean Paul, Bounty Killer & Kevin Lyttle) its time seems far from over either. John John's CHICATITA charts twice in the form of the prophet Capleton and the crucial Bounty Killer/Angel Doolas combo, while Shane Brown's (& Birch's) KLYMAXX hits spots # 17 & # 19, also thru the voice of the man from Islington, St.Mary, as well as thru Ward 21. On the rootical tip, Chuck Fender climbed up to # 10 again, whereas Richie Spice lost his #1 from last month, dropping him down to #11. Richie's awesome "High Grade In My Chalice" on the SWING EASY riddim is brand-spanking-new at #16, while Bounty's & Pincher's re-created "Bandolero" rose up to the #13 spot. I also HIGHLY recommend new female artist Evette's "Baby Mama" on Eight 76 Records, who keep busting out some excellent new artists as Fiyah Blaze and the aforementioned Evette. Next month I predict some MAJOR changes, as new cultural artist Fantan Mojah has finally hit these shores, as well as Gibbo's top-ranking HARD TIMES riddim (featuring the next big I-Wayne hit). Junior Gong is mashing up the scene with the HUGE "Welcome To Jamrock" and Don Corleon's new JONKANOO, as well as Snowcone's APPLAUSE are both bound to cause a stir. There are also new riddims from Steelie&Cleevie and Fat Eyes on the way. Until such time; Don Martin. It's springtime again and bodies are looking for the sun and feeling the vibes. Both young and old can get out to see lots of music this season. And there's definitely lots to see! >From the Mercenaries to the DubTerrainians, to Soul Medic Ishence and Jah Light, Nevada County has been harboring some of Northern California's best roots and culture. In amongst these reggae heavy hitters emerges a band which has stunned it's audiences in both the clubs and the outdoor areans. Through the years, Mystafya has solidified it's claim to be one of Northern California's top reggae bands. Since the release of their first album, Come to Jam (1997) , Mystafya has maintained a strong presence in the local roots scene. Songs like "Puff with Pride" and "Cops in the House" showed the culture and philosophies behind the music and the lyrics. Tracks from the album have held top spots in the European mp3 web communities for over five years. When sung live, the power and the effect that these songs have on fans has always been a draw for return audiences. In a conscious community, the birth and emergence of a band like Mystafya is a blessing and truly couldn't come at a better time. Run Free (December 2004), Mystafya's most recent release, brings forth more of the solid music fans have come to love and look forward to hearing. With much solid feedback and steller reviews, the band has stepped out into the worldwide market with positivity and confidence. The album gained good reveiws and even ranked in DJ Bahilman's (www.creation-steppin.com) top 30 reggae album releases of 2004, next to Steel Pulse's African Holocaust and Gregory Isaacs' latest release, Open the Door from Ras Records. Mystafya's stage performance is powerful and fun, with Franklin "Big Frank" Williams and Jamal Walker singing original lyrics and freestyling on the spot. Having shared the stage with Toots and the Maytals, Don Carlos, Third World, Steel Pulse and more, the band has proved it's value to the modern roots scene. The band always brings in a good show whether they sell out a club or sing to a festival crowd. Look forward to a summer of roots rock and reggae from Mystafya! Many of you already know the sad news that one of Europe's pioneers of reggae music Natty U, passed Friday March 25th. Around the same time as Jamaica's studios went digital (I think Jammy's Sleng Teng was the first digital reggae riddim in 1985), Natty U started creating his own beats in Germany. Not only was Ulli one of Europe's foremost reggae producers, he was also one great singer. I had the pleasure of recording an album at his Northsidelab Studio in 1998 & 1999 (which is still unreleased, but finally will be within the next year). The amount of whacky baccy we blazed, always washed down with with Natty's favorite teas, was amazing. Not nearly as amazing as the work we did though. When Frankie Paul met Natty in 1998 & heard some of his music, he asked him:"Man, what you doing in Germany? You need to be in Jamaica with your kinda skills!" Due to his continual bout with cancer, finances were often tight for Natty and many of his projects either never got released or did not get the exposure that they deserved. While reggae was getting HUGE in Germany in the late 1990's & the new millenium, one of the people who paved the way for our music in Germany was more or less left out. Whereas many of the German reggae productions (such as Pow Pow's f.e.) were recorded with Jamaican musicians a yard, Natty did nearly all of his work with German musicians in Germany. The outcome was usually quite original and AT LEAST up to par with most Jamaican reggae productions. Although I am WAY out here in the Wild West (New Mexico, USA), I will do a tribute to the man on the radio TONIGHT. People in Germany can log onto www.kunm.org & click on the listen live link. The show is on from 3am-6am (Friday night/morningtime) tonight and I will run the tribute from 5:30 am until 6 am, with some of my favorite Natty U productions, although I do not have the latest set yet. Please tune in if you can and keep the man's spirit alive through his music. If anyone would like a copy (cd) of the radio-show, shoot me an e-mail & I'll get it to you. The world has lost one of its finest reggae producers/vocalists and I will certainly miss my FRIEND! Blessings & yes: BETTER MUS COME !!!! Don Martin [10] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Roots-ee (R.A.W. #214) Subject: Reggae rebel Jimmy Cliff misses socially conscious music Date: Sun, 3 Apr 2005 22:30:11 -0400 From: rlam Reggae rebel Jimmy Cliff misses socially conscious music Published in the Asbury Park Press 03/31/05 By CHRIS JORDAN GANNETT NEW JERSEY JIMMY CLIFF 7 tonight Starland Ballroom570 Jernee Mill Road, Sayreville $25 Cliff will sign CDs and merchandise after the show (732) 238-5500 or www.starlandballroom.com Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff had one of the era's most poignant anti-war songs with the rock-steady "Vietnam" in 1969. A soldier writes home in "Vietnam" telling his family he'll be home soon, only to die the next day. There have been few such songs while war rages in Iraq, a fact not lost on Cliff, who will perform tonight at Sayreville's Starland Ballroom. "The times seem lighter and frivolous," said Cliff. "Things are more pushed forward due to the information age. Like what's happening in Iraq and Jerusalem, they don't seem to have the importance needed to be put into song." Reggae would not have been the same had it not been for Cliff. Born 1948 as James Chambers in St. Catherine, Jamaica, Cliff was a childhood success who entered the studio at 14. Cliff's ascendancy was so rapid that he was selected as one of Jamaica's representatives to the World's Fair in New York City in 1964. Cliff's international stardom was sealed when he appeared in the 1971 movie "The Harder They Come" and contributed to the soundtrack. In the film, Cliff plays an up-and-coming hard-knock singer who's jailed for getting into a knife fight, then makes his way by selling pot. "Definitely that movie had a big impact on the world," Cliff said. "It's the ultimate outlaw movie of the last 30 years." Cliff has been something of an outlaw in the music world, existing on the periphery of the business for the last several decades despite his legend status. His most recent album was 2004's "Black Magic," which featured duets with such notables as ex-Police leader Sting and the late Joe Strummer of The Clash. Cliff still speaks about Strummer in the present tense. "Joe is a rebel like myself," added Cliff. "He's one who's always rebelling against things he sees that are not right in society. On the other hand, he's very bright and an excellent lyricist who's very aware what goes on in this society." one peace roots-ee R.A.W. 214 http://thearkband.com R.A.W. 1414 419-352-7143 rlam@bghost.net *********************************************************************** In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty Forward the Reggae Vibe...Every Time !
