Laura www.jahworks.org (R.A.W. #1582) The Bay Area Loses a Great Talent and Friend By Laura Gardner http://www.jahworks.org/music/features/fazel.htm Fazel Prendergast, the band leader and guitarist of the reggae group, Yellow Wall Dub Squad, died in a tragic car accident on the afternoon of Friday April 1. He had performed the night before at the Soma Arts Center in San Francisco, California, backing Don Carlos and Sister I-Live. It is speculated that Predergast left soon after the show around 4:30 am and did not sleep much, if at all. Bandmates said he wanted to get to the next venue in Arcata to get an early start. As Predergast was driving north on Californias Highway 101, he swerved in his 1991 Mercedes over an embankment, a 150-foot drop, into the rain-swollen Eel River near the Mendocino-Humboldt county line. He was swept downstream, but able to get out of his car. Witnesses were unable to pull him out although Predergast did hand over his Fender Stratocaster guitar to an onlooker before the current came. The California Highway Patrol said that Predergast was found dead at the bottom of the river about a quarter-mile away, tangled up with a tree branch and a rock, after a two-hour search involving six agencies and four helicopters. Prendergast had a long and fruitful music career that began in ernest in Kingston, Jamaica in 1974-first with Augustus Pablos Rockers International Allstars Band, then with Earl Chinna Smiths High Times Players. He backed everyone from Jacob Miller, Hugh Mundell, Junior Reid, Don Carlos, The Congos, Sugar Minott, Johnny Osborne, and others. In 1977, he opened with Israel Vibration for Bob Marley and the Wailers. Predergast linked up with Mutabaruka in 1983 and toured and recorded as part of the High Times Players for the dub poet. Mutabaruka changed the bands name to Sound of Resistance where they toured Europe and the U.S. Predergast continued to record and play music at Tuff Gong, Studio One, Channel One, and other legendary studios with other top-notch session musicians including Santa Davis, Squiddly Cole and Sly Dunbar. Prendergast then moved to New York in 1989 where he worked with Computer Paul, the Meditations, Sister Carol and others, and relocated to California permanently in 1991. In conjunction with Amlak Tafari, Predergast formed the Yellow Wall Dub Squad in 1999. Tafari said Predergast initially had doubts about working as a collective, since promoters can cut costs by hiring individual session players. But once Predergast saw the benefits, he worked harder than most to make it work, Fazel run it 100%, remembered Tafari, Him always used to say tree-foot horse always win race, which is how Prendergast saw Yellow Wall--the collective nature of the group was its handicap in a cut-throat industry. His vision was that Yellow Wall would be the number one West Coast band, backing everyone who came through. "He was a pioneer," said bassist and family friend Toho Saunders,"He was like a rebel with a cause. He was into his fast cars, and his Italian shoes, but reggae was a mission. He ate, breathed, lived and drank reggae music and was very diligent about business." Saunders continued, "Fazel was a wild child! He would come to sound check and everyone would be trying to tune their instruments, right? Fazel would be playing LOUD over everybody! And he was unapologetic [laughs] That's Fazel. But nobody skanked like Fazel when it came to rhythm guitar. Nobody has a tone like he got from the instument. It's because he used his whole arm. He put his body into it. Some players just use their wrists. Not Fazel." Writing his own music was also one of Fazel's loves. He released a CD and was working on another one. "That is something he definitely wanted to get out there," Said Saunders, "he was really working hard on his own stuff." Fazel was 46 years old and is survived by his partner and wife of eleven years, Colette McGeough, and his 9-year-old daughter, Deadhra. Aside from his family, music was his life. He told Snowboard Magazine in January, "The only time I find peace, happiness, and a connection with the Most High is when I play my guitar." The Bay Area reggae community is devastated and deeply affected by this loss. He will be remembered as a very talented guitarist, a hard worker, and someone who cared about people--he wears his heart on his sleeve, said Tafari. The whole community is upset by this loss-everyone is feeling it hard, said Junglz Apart frontman Tony D. Predergast's manager, Robert Oyugi, confirmed, "Fazel will be deeply missed. It just hits home that you never know when your time will come." The memorial will take place on Monday, April 11 in Santa Rosa. There are also plans in the works for a memorial concert on May 28 at the 19 Broadway Club in Fairfax, CA. More details will be released as they become known. He was in a fatal car accident on a way to a gig up Highway 101 in California last week. We have known Fazell for about 15 years and he has played with absolutely everybody. Fazell, and what happened to him on the road could happen to any of our musicians that log all the miles that they do to get to the next gig. It really brought to my awareness the effort put forth by the musicians just to play music for us. We see them standing on the stage entertaining us, we don't think about what it took for them to get to that stage or the family they had to leave behind. It is really reminding me that I need to keep more of an open door policy for musicians traveling through my area- Reno, NV. If you are tired, stop and rest. I remind all of my RAW brothers and sisters to check in with the reggae bands that are in your town. Do they have a place to stay, is their vehicle safe, etc. Again, our prayers go out to Fazell's wife and daughter. And to reggae bands driving everywhere - safe journey Peace and love, Kaati, Wendy Russell, Justine Ketola, Amy Shapas, Laura Haykell, Robbin Stull, Kristine Shaff, Doris Kalin #111 - Reggae Business Association REGGAE FESTIVAL GUIDE (775) 337-8344 [5] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Reggae Vibes Prods NL (R.A.W. #1050) Subject: Reggae Vibes News Bulletin - April 6, 2005 Date: Wed, 6 Apr 2005 23:33:04 +0200 From: Reggae Vibes Productions NL -*- http://www.reggae-vibes.com -*- -*- News Bulletin (April 6, 2005) -*- Playlist for Thursday, April 7, 2005. One of his teachers in school was Marcus Garvey Jr., the son of Jamaica's National Hero. It was through Garvey's teachings, along with the writings of Eldrige Cleaver, Malcolm X and other "progressive books" (banned in Jamaica) that Mutabaruka was drawn away from his religious training and into the upsurge of Black Awareness that was taking place in Jamaica in the late 60's. It was also during this period that he began writing poetry for which he received high praise from his teachers. In July of 1971, Swing Magazine published the very first poem of Allan Mutabaruka. Written in the native Jamaican language of "Patois", Muta's poetry poignantly strikes out against economic, political and spiritual oppression. It immediately resonated with the masses in Jamaica. Swing continued to publish Muta's poetry almost every month until 1973 when his poetry was compiled into a book called "Outcry". Another work entitled "Sun and Moon" was published in 1976, and the poetry from these two books were merged into "Mutabaruka: The First Poems" which was published in 1981. In 1974, almost everyone in Jamaica paid close attention to the music being released there, though few Jamaicans were avid readers let alone poetry enthusiasts. Muta began to combine his poetry with music in the hopes of reaching a larger audience. As he explains "My goal is to awaken the people with the poetry to make them aware of their conscience and their consciousness so they can be motivated to do something about the situation that they find themselves in. So we try to make the poetry work for the people rather than just as an art form - more of a working form of art." With his ominous presence, his fiery lyrics and his intense, rhythmic vocal style, Mutabaruka quickly drew the attention of the island's premier reggae artists. After an initial recording of "Outcry" with Light of Saba, Mutabaruka was asked by Earl "Chinna" Smith make a recording. "Everytime I 'ear De Sound" was the single released in 1981 that established Mutabaruka as a force be reckoned with. A stellar performance at Reggae Sunsplash later that year, along with an appearance in the documentary "Land of Look Behind" propelled Muta's career and resulted in the release of his debut album "Check It" in 1983. Throughout the 1980's, Mutabaruka took his passionate belief system and relentless inquiries to audiences throughout the world. The combination of poetry with reggae had come to be known as "Dub Poetry". Muta also traveled extensively to recite poetry and give lectures at Colleges and Universities, for it was there that the seeds of Mutabaruka's revolutionary words and afrocentric philosophies found their most fertile ground. The success of Muta's albums did not alter his unwavering commitment of enlightening people as to the plight that colonialism and christianity have heaped on people of colour throughout the world. In 1989, Mutabaruka contributed the title track to "H-2 Worka", a documentary exposing the injustices of the United States' policy of granting work visas to poor caribbean countries so that these workers could be exploited for economic gain. In 1985, Muta drafted a host of well-known Jamaican artists to record "Land of Africa", the proceeds from which were given to Ethiopia's famine victims. Shortly after the release of the album "Blakk Wi Blakk.k.k." in 1991, Muta was recruited by Ethiopian film director Haile Gerima to play the lead role of "Shango" in the movie "Sankofa". The title is an Akan word meaning "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward". Jamaica witnessed yet another evolution for Mutabaruka in 1993, when he agreed to host a radio talk show on IRIE-FM. In virtually no time at all, "The Cutting Edge" became a platform for black consciousness reasonings on a variety of topics ranging from diets to deities, from Roman Catholicism to Rastafari, from ecology to economy. Today, The Cutting Edge is Jamaica's most popular radio program, with people tuning into the program both on the radio and through the internet. In 2002, Mutabaruka celebrated 20 years of recording with his tenth album "Life Squared", which was released by Heartbeat Records. On this recording, Muta expounds on his feelings towards religion, spirituality and life, which may be a cause for calamity amongst both Judeo-Christians and Rastafarians alike. "Rastafari needs a new faculty of interpretation" proclaims Muta. "We have to elevate and respond to the woman in order to clearly understand what the liberation is all about." In addition to touring with his "Skool Band" Mutabaruka continues to journey to distant places in order to lecture and deliver "Spoken Word" performances. His audiences run the full gamut from a lecture before the Kingston Chamber of Commerce in Jamaica to a "Spoken Word" performance for the prison inmates of Nebraska. Stanford University, Yale, Howard University, and The University of Vienna are just a sample of the numerous institutions of higher learning that Mutabaruka has lectured at.
