Congress passed the resolution in 1996. The four-acre site is on the Tidal Basin, adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, in what is known as the monumental core of the Mall. NO PERSON OF COLOR HAS EVER BEEN HONORED THERE Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity began the project. They have thus far raised $35.5 Million for construction. We actually need $100 Million for the entire project. It has been extremely difficult to get African American people to contribute. I have witnessed people who dont want to give anything, and then there are others who will only give a $1.00. WHAT IS GOING ON? THIS MEMORIAL SITE IS MONUMENTAL TO OUR HISTORY AND CULTURE AS A PEOPLE. THIS LEGACY IS SOMETHING THAT WILL SERVE TO PROVIDE US WITH A LITTLE MORE SELF RESPECT, DIGNITY, ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM OTHER CULTURES AND A MORE SOUND POSITION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. You are not being asked to give your life savings. Give as little or as much as you can afford. Spare the Gucci, BMW, handbags, tennis shoes or coffee just for a few days or months, in order to help the history and longevity of our culture. We are very rarely written in the books or sculpted on the Mall. Take pride by saying that you are part of making this happen. www.buildthedream.org Please give somethingwe must stop blaming others for our shortcomings and start building our own. Don't think that as we prepare for the release of Pressure Points!we are forgetting about Dub Side and the Easy Star All-Stars. The All-Stars recently played the afterparty at Ultra Music Fest in Miami, sharing a stage with Roni Size, Rahzel (from the Roots), and Dieselboy. The band's performance in Long Beach in February was also written up in The Beat. Here's what they said: "When the Easy Star All-Stars made Dub Side of the Moon two years ago, a crafty bit of reggae/rock crossover was achieved. Here was a complete reggae reworking of one of rock's most classic albums that kept intact many sonic nuances of the original while making bold changes (such as replacing guitar solos with dj chatting) that made the remake a classic in its own right. Performed live, the music not only held up well but absolutely soared, thanks to the All-Stars' supremely skilled and tight lineup of singers and players. Hearing such familiar songs as "Breathe," "Money," "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage" played onstage inna true reggae style brought a kind of hypnotically giddy feeling. Subdued but clearly awestruck, the crowd hung on every note, every word. The Easy Star crew was a very tough act to follow." Sounds good, right? Well, you'll have a chance to see much more of the All-Stars this summer as tour dates are being planned for the midwest, the UK, Colorado, and other points of interest. In the meantime, here are the two upcoming shows. The show with Cypress Hill is one of the ultimate two-fers for smokers everywhere!
