It's 13 killer reggae songs. Everyone that hears it says 'Are you sure that this is a children's album, because it sure doesn't sound like one?' Very few children were involved in the recording process, it was recorded by adults, for adults that happen to be parents or are kids at heart. Even if you don't have kids, you'll love it. It's not like anything you've ever heard before."--Mark Mohr GospelReggae.com Interview with Mark Mohr of Christafari MEET THE TEACHERS: We caught up with Christafari founder, producer, chief-songwriter and lead vocalist Mark Mohr, on the eve of the release of the group's first children's album (Christafari's tenth recording). He had just returned from his favorite pastime of surfing and with the scent of salt water still in his long dreadlocks, he sat down with us for an extensive interview on their most ambitious project. In this segment of the interview we discuss the inspiration for the album and the cast of voices that he uses for the interludes: GR: Hey Mark it's great to be here with you. Thanks for agreeing to meet with me. I'd like to start out by asking--why a children's album? MM: For the last 10 years, I have had it on my list for things to do. But, the timing was never right. Fans have been asking us for years to give them something that they can play for their kid... because most children's music is lacking in production and quality. And gospel reggae for kids-up-until now has been nonexistent. Then a year and a half ago, I was hired by Gotee Records to record a reggae remake of a children's song from the 70's. It was from the "Music Machine", a popular kid's musical and album by Agape Land. This short song eventually triggered the recording of our album. GR: Go on... MM: I was thinking about all of the great songs that I heard in my visits to Jamaica over the past 16 years and how much I would like to introduce them to the youth of the rest of the world. The recording of a song for this Gotee release inspired me, and so I instantly began tracking. A year and a half later, it's finally done. GR: Did you approach this album differently than any of your past recordings? MM: Absolutely! I have always said "Music is the only thing in the world that doesn't taste better with cheese on it." Yet on this album I wasn't afraid to throw on some extra queso. Because it was a children's project, I was given the liberty to temporarily reshape our sound. I used a lot more programming and bright sounds for the drums. I brought in my good friend Einstein Brown to play steel pan on a few of the tracks. I was open to any fun idea the musicians and guest vocalists suggested. We took a no holds barred approach. GR: What about the song writing, did anything change there? MM: I had to simplify things from the normal approach that I would take on a Christafari song. One song is so simple that it only has 12 words in it and a whole lot of repetition--this song is called "Higher Higher". GR: I noticed on the cover of the album you have some unique artwork, tell us a bit about that. MM: My mom did the cover. She worked at Hannah Barbara years ago and is a professional artist. We had a lot of fun putting together the characters. GR: Now that you mention it, tell us about this unusual cast of characters. MM: Well, I was waiting in line at the DMV one day and came up with the concept. You see I have always enjoyed doing interludes in between songs. So in addition to the 13 new songs on the album, I thought to myself, "What if we used animated voices--like in a cartoon for the interludes?" And one by one these characters came to mind. GR: Like Nigel? MM: Ya that one was easy. For years I had a hyper active pet iguana named Nigel. He would bite you if you tried to show him affection. In Reggae Sunday School, Nigel thinks he's a chameleon until the rest of the cast convinces him otherwise. Let's just say he acts a bit over-caffeinated. I do his voice and it fits perfect with my type A personality. GR: And Calypso? MM: ya, David Fohe plays this character. He's the lead singer of 'Imisi. Man, his voice can go really low. He plays a singing coconut. He ends every sentence with "...mon" and likes to randomly break out into song accompanied by a steel pan. He's the atypical islander! GR: Tell us about Seymour... MM: Our keyboardist Bobby Cressey plays him. He is a seagull. He has a cockney accent and is a newscaster with a bird's eye view of the events on the beach. GR: And Manu? MM: My brother Greg does that voice. He is an overripe know-it-all mango with an East Indian accent. He corrects everyone. GR: And last but not least, tell us about Patchouli. MM: She's a jellyfish with a Brazilian accent that washes up on shore on her way to Brazil. She has good intentions but she keeps accidentally stinging others. The other Sunday school leaders end up bringing her to Christ through one of the final songs. Fatima Caldeira plays her. GR: So, these characters are the Sunday school teachers? MM: Ya, it's a long story, you have to get the album and hear the interludes to understand. It's kind of like Veggie Tales meets Ren and Stimpy with a bit of Tom & Jerry. But this album is far more than what you would expect. It's not just interludes and funny voices. It is 13 killer reggae songs. Everyone that hears it says "Are you sure that this is a children's album, because it sure doesn't sound like one?" Very few children were involved in the recording process, it was recorded by adults, for adults that happen to be parents or are kids at heart. Even if you don't have kids, you'll love it. I just looked over last year's review and I really shouldn't have been surprised at what I read. Some things have definitely changed, and there are other things have stayed the same. I've just returned from the 22nd Annual Reggae On The River , my own personal 17th year in a row of attendance! I still can't believe it's been that long and that I've had that many fantastic times. Yes, I still have a case the post ROTR depression I always get upon my return to my usual routine. I really looked forward to getting away from my normal existence this year, and didn't want to come back home when it was over. It went by way too fast. One thing that didn't change this year is I didn't make it in to the festival on Friday again. I took yet another extra day partially off of work, but some babylonian events beyond my control conspired to give me a late start and arrival time once again. I swear that I'm going to have to keep taking off yet another vacation day next year to get ready in time to be there on Friday, as it seems that the older I get, the longer it takes me to pack the truck and get it all together. Also again, I had already seen most of the artists that performed on Friday before in the past, so I know that it was a great day and evening that I missed. I arrived at my same reserved private campsite in a family campground about nine miles south of the festival and set up my tent, sleeping bag and airbed. The latter is a wonderful thing to have to cushion one's body from sleeping on the hard ground. Saturday, I woke up fairly early and got myself and my possessions ready to go. I've found that eating snack foods in the morning saves me time and energy instead of having to build a fire and cook. I then drove up to the Benbow golf course parking lot where I always park and take the shuttle. Waiting in the shade under the blesssed awning, I visited with my fellow travellers for about fifteen minutes until the bus came. I made it to the will call booth for my entrance wristband, and was greeted warmly and given a Reed's Ginger Beer to drink on my way down to the festival bowl. I thought that was a very nice gesture. When I arrived inside, the One World Orchestra was playing. This large group of talented musicians also perform in several other different bands, and come together to play in this one whenever they can. Next came Alma Melodiosa, an exciting band that combined Latin, pop, reggae and several other genres. The Bay Area based O-Maya was next with an amazing female vocalist named Destani Wolf. Her astounding vocal range and delivery sent shivers down my spine, and I enjoyed the band's Afro-Latin Hip Hop groove. Prezident Brown followed, with his conscious dancehall chanting stylee. This is one artist that has endured for many years, and surely will continue to do so for many years to come. Nuffsed, a reggae band from Seattle was next, combining rock, reggae dancehall and dub. Queen Ifrica graced the stage presently, her rootsy and beautiful voice wafting through the valley. I-Wayne followed, his conscious vibe inspiring the crowd. Tony Rebel came next, his sing jay combination of reggae and dancehall. I really want to hand it to whomever scheduled the next artist for the time slot that they did , early evening, because this musician was certainly one of the hottest acts of the sweltering Saturday ( a reputed 107 degrees!) lineup and he had the people energetically on their feet ,waving their hands and dancing themselves into a frenzy! Rupee is a young male soca sensation from Barbados, and his combination of soca, dancehall and rapping styles was enthralling. Buju Banton entertained us after that, he is always great to hear, followed by Stephen and Damian Marley. These two sons of Bob are carrying on his proud legacy. Damian has already won a Grammy for "Best Reggae Album Of The Year" in 2002 with his second album , "Halfway Tree." Stephen has been doing more songwriting and producing and has just released his first album. These two brothers were a quite fittng way to end the night, and then I went to my shuttle and ended up back at my campsite at about 3:00 AM. Sunday morning was a little easier because I was already packed up to go to the festival, and away I drove again back up to the shuttle in Benbow, which came again fairly quickly. I made it in to the grounds, just having missed watching the Lost Coast Marimba Band. I did get to observe their interview, though, and they play many different instruments to create a dynamic style of blended genres, including a wooden marimba, which is similar to a xylophone. Next, we were treated to Fely, a.k.a Felicite Tchaco, who originally hails from Cote d' Ivoire, or the Ivory Coast, now based in San Francisco. This beautiful lady writes and sings songs in several languages, haunting African melodies that I can still hear playing in my head. She's also a model and designs clothes. She briefly wears an intricately decorated mask on stage that is an important one in her culture. David Kirton came on next, and I was happy to hear his smooth, beautiful vocals once again. I remembered him from a previous Reggae On The River. He has recently done an album called "Island Songs For Children" that was inspired from tunes that he made up for his own little one. Daara J followed, with their unique brand of Senaglese hip hop. Their name is what intrigued me the most about this band. It means "school of life." In line next were several artists that are related, and also under the Fifth Element , Inc. management company. Richie Spice and Spanna Banna both have unique styles that are a mix of dancehall and reggae, and are both members of the Bonner family. Anthony Cruz was scheduled also, but for reasons no one seemed to know, was absent. A short break, and then a musical explosion on stage called Ozomatli appeared. These guys that came out of the east LA Center For Peace and Justice have a great big sound that is right there in your face, but in a totally good way. I had always thought that they were a Latin band because of their name and because they are quite often paired in shows with the salsa rock groups Santana, and Manna, but I was totally surprised to discover that nothing could be further from the truth. This group has a very eclectic style that is a jumble of different kinds of music thrown together, but somehow it all works out together fantastically. It quieted down a bit, but still had a dose of fiery energy when Anthony B. came on, again combining dancehall and reggae. Alpha Blondy closed out the weekend, with his wonderful African reggae group, singing in five different languages. And then, it was back to the shuttle and campsite and eventually homeward bound the next day. This year's Reggae On The River once again featured diverse musical artists of different musical styles and genres, as it always has. It's always a surprise as to what one will be hearing next, but for me it's never a disappointment. Also, this is the very last year that the festival will be on this particular patch of ground at French's Camp. Next year it will be moved a short distance southward across the river to another friendly home on the Dimmick Ranch property. I have heard various things said about this new place being more suited for this event, and I am eager to see it. But, I guess I'll just have to wait again until next year....only 354 more days until Reggae On The River....! :D Leigh Crutchfield Irieview Productions R.A.W. # 388 [9] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From: Ras Shaggai (R.A.W. #1621) Subject: Conscious Vision Records Release-Ras Shaggai Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 14:39:58 -0700 From: info@rasshaggai.com Greetings RAW massive, Conscious Vision Records is proud to announce that the long awaited solo debut "I Awake" from Ras Shaggai (RAW #1621).
