I recently received an awesome reggae cd called Live and Direct by the Neutral Sisters. They were born in Nairobi, their father English and mother is Jamaican. I put the cd in my car and have not been able to take it out. I think you will all be taken by surprise as much as I was. It is simply awesome with incredible harmonies, conscious dancehall vibes and great melodies with one very sweet instrumental. Please check out their website at www.neutralsisters.com I rarely make comments like this about cds but I am truly taken. I mentioned on the Conscious Party board that I was driving around yesterday with it in my player and my friend would not let me park until the cd was over. And for those who might like to link to a fairly active reggae board, check out the Lions Den at the Conscious Party website. http://www.consciousparty.com/forum/public/index.cgi we would love to have you join us~ we welcome international members especially. blessed JAH LOVE, Sista Irie #23 [2] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= From: Ooklah The Moc (R.A.W. #) Subject: OOKLAH THE MOC (December) Date: Fri, 2 Dec 2005 02:45:14 -0800 (PST) From: abush@ooklahthemoc.com ALOHA! ALBUM DESCRIPTION:
Long before Mattisyahu brought us Hasidic Jewish reggae, Christafari pioneered Christian Reggae. In 1995 legendary reggae group Christafari broke new ground in the genre when they released their "Soul Fire" album through Toby Mac's, Gotee Records. The rest is history.! Produced by Mark Heimerman (Michael W. Smith, dc Talk, Stacie Orrico, tobyMac, Tait and Anointed), "Soul Fire" is still best selling gospel reggae release in the world with approximately 150,000 units sold!

In 1995, Christafari's "Soul Fire" release was distributed worldwide by Word Records and Sony/Epic and earned the band a coveted slot on the 46-city Reggae Sunsplash tour. That Summer the group hit the road on this extensive tour with reggae heavy hitters like Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Aswad, Big Mountain, Junior Tucker, Worl'-a-Girl, Sister Carol, Freddie McGregor, the Wailing Souls and Tommy Cowan. Shortly thereafter, Christafari became a household name in the close-knit reggae community.

"Soul Fire" includes a remake of Christafari's popular "Selah" (from their previous album), replete with dub vibes and a blistering hot horn section. Hit songs on this album include the timeless "Christafari",! the lovers rock "Inside Burning", The rugged dancehall styl ed "Soul Fire" by Mark Mohr (aka Tansoback), the dub styled "Come Children", and the rootsy "Spirit Cry" sung by Erik Sundin (Earthman). Other standout tracks include "Listening" (you may have seen a video for this song filmed in Jamaica) and "Give a Little One Love". It is also noteworthy that "Sitting and Watching" was the last song that Jaibo Culture sang with Christafari until 2005 when he performed on Christafari's "Reggae Sunday School" release. Jaibo left the band less than a year after "Soul Fire" was released.

This album is a cornerstone of gospel reggae and earned the group comparisons to reggae pioneers such as Third World and Steel Pulse. Their signature combination of roots and dancehall replete with catchy hooks, lush harmonies and standout brass make "Soul Fire" a timeless classic. Over a decade since it's initial release, this coveted album has been out of pr! int for the last few years. This is the original pressing of the album and GospelReggae.com is currently the only store in the world that sells this album. Our stock is very limited--so order your copy today before it is sold out for good!

Avion Blackman's "Onyinye" album was recently given a flattering review in Aspiring Retail Maga! zine (formerly Christian Retailing):

ONYINYE
Avion Blackman / Lion of Zion (Infinity)
Style: Reggae/Folk/World Music:

You could bemoan the lack of a truly genre-bending female artist in Christian music nowadays--or you could put on Avion Blackman's "Onyinye" and quite your moaning.

Blackman, from a renowned Caribbean gospel-music family, possesses a sweet, breathy voice with the slightest hint of an accent. Musically, she's sure to please many.

Considering she's also wed to Christafari's Mark Mohr, it's no surprise she excels at lighter and rootsier reggae. She also offers additions to the iPods of acid/fusion-jazz fans, folkies, world music lovers, and those who love the eclecticism of Norah Jones, Dido, and Enya.

If there were such a thing as adult-alternative Christian radio, Blackman would vie for queen of the format. Customers looking for something different will appreciate you turning them o! n to "Onyinye".--Jamie Lee Rake. For more informa tion and to hear mp3 sound clips of all Avion's songs go to:

Christafari
Reggae Sunday School
Lion of Zion Entertainment

Mark Mohr, who has been producing the finest Christian reggae nearly 16 years as Christafari, is behind a whole new concept project called "Reggae Sunday School." The idea of this album is to provide a quality children's project that will be enjoyed by parents and children alike.

Through weaving reggae and Caribbean styles, Mohr's first children's project is a huge success. The album becomes a concept album as the interludes lead you from one song to the next, as well as leading you through a journey with characters like Nigel the Iguana, Calypso the Coconut, Manu! the Mango, Seymour the Seagull, and Patchouli the Jellyfish.

Reggae Sunday School is unique musically, although Christafari has certainly reached mainstream commercial success, his reggae style is typically regional. There are many quest appearances on the album by other reggae artists which proves that the genre is much further reaching than most know about. Guests include Red Cloud, Richie Righteous, 'Imisi, Avion Blackman, Jaibo Culture, Monty G, Ace Winn, and Solomon Jabby.

The album is both fun and uplifting. It holds over an hour of favorite Sunday school songs and comedic interludes. There are distinctive reggae versions of "What a Friend We Have In Jesus," "Jesus Loves the Little Children," and "Zacheaus," as well as Christafari originals. Check out the companion web site www.reggaesundayschool.com for fun and games and stories about Reggae Sunday School.-- Ken W.

http://www.reggaesundayscho! dol.com SOLOMO N JABBY FEATURED IN THE BEAT MAGAZINE:

Taken from the following article:
"Homegrown Reggae In The U.S.A."
THE BEAT (Vol. 24, #1 2005)

Listening to Solomon Jabby's "Rootical Revelations" disc, you might think you'd happened upon a long-lost King Tubby/August Pablo dub session. Not surprising, since Jabby states that when he first heard the collaborative efforts of those two late greats, "something stirred in my soul. I knew I was hearing 100 percent artistic expression in its purest form." Jabby combines a passion for roots with a Christian perspective and multi-instrumental skills to create marvelous mystical dub to rival the best. "I guess it was for selfish reasons," he says of his desire to make a dub album. "I just wanted to get some things off my chest and on a record. Reggae became my bended knee and a way to deliver my burnt offerings." A self-described traditionalist, Jabby's preferenc! e is for reggae that emerged from the Jamaican ghettos of the 1970's. "Let us not forget the roots and fruits of the original laborers," he urges. "What they lacked financially they made up for with talent and a strong desire to communicate to the world through their craft, reggae music." Few American reggae artists specialize in dub- Solomon Jabby not only helps fill a void, he does so brilliantly.--The BEAT
