This note is to regretfully inform you that the Blue Riddim Band gig scheduled for this coming Friday is cancelled. Steve "Duck" McLane, the drummer had a little mishap in our icy weather and fell, breaking his arm. I'm sure there will be a follow up gig after his arm mends. Meanwhile everyone wish him a speedy recovery. Please note shuttle information and expanded band bio below. Thank you and Happy Holidays! Love, DJ Sister Yasmin NEW YEAR'S EVE BLACK & RED BALL AT MATEEL COMMUNITY CENTER SAT. 12/31/05: Pull out your finest, most outrageous black and red attire, and get ready to ring in the New Year in style as Redway’s Mateel Community Center is transformed into a classy nightclub-type setting for the revival of the Black & Red Ball in a special New Year’s Eve concert with Aphrodesia, The Earl Thomas Band, and DJ Sister Yasmin on Saturday, December 31st. Beyond a great night of funky and eclectic music, your Black & Red Ball experience will also come complete with a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, grazing rights all evening on the free hors d’oeuvre table, continuous shuttle service between Redway and Garberville (see below for schedule), and a $10 discount for advance ticket holders at the Best Western Humboldt House Inn and Sherwood Forest Motel in Garberville and at the Brass Rail Inn in Redway. Additionally, the event will feature a no-host bar offering a fine selection of North Coast wines and champagne, draught beers from the Eel River Brewing Company, and a delicious cocktail punch available for purchase, alongside numerous gourmet snack, dessert, and refreshment options. The party starts at 7pm with the Crucial Dance Riddims of DJ Sister Yasmin, whose energetic and varied spinning will be followed by the internationally acclaimed Earl Thomas Band. A relative newcomer to Humboldt County’s musical landscape, Earl Thomas is one of the brightest stars on the soul horizon and his sweet and bluesy Memphis-style soul has earned him credit amongst big name music industry types like Jerry Wexler, Etta James, and Ike Turner. While this praise says volumes about Earl’s immense talent, local fans know him for his huge, booming voice and stage presence, strong original compositions, and the funky arrangements of his ultra-tight rhythm section, which are sure to be in full effect for their first-ever performance at the Mateel. After getting primed with 90 minutes of funk-laden soul, get ready to chime in the New Year with two sets of “Super Aphro Beat” with Aphrodesia, the Bay Area’s premier Afrobeat orchestra. Putting a Latin twist on the enormous horn-drenched and political music of Afrobeat (a style popularized by the great Nigerian artist Fela Kuti), the 11-piece Aphrodesia have been filing theaters around the country with their rowdy blend of African rhythms, exotic melodies, slamming percussion, and monstrous horns since they exploded on the San Francisco music scene in 2003. Encompassing such varied styles as Afrobeat, Highlife, dub, funk, Caribbean spice, Latin, and East-African Trance, Aphrodesia offers up an extraordinary sonic stew that is taken to the next level with their colorful costumes and irresistible stage presence, which is sure to serve as the perfect way to welcome in 2006. Tickets are on sale now at the Mateel office, Redway Liquor, Wild Horse Records (Garberville), Fortuna Music Mart, The Works (Arcata/ Eureka), The Metro (Arcata), The Good Food Store (Laytonville), Leaves of Grass (Willits), Ukiah Natural Foods, & Tangents (Ft. Bragg) or online at www.inticketing.com for a price of $25 in advance. The cost is $20 in advance for 2005 and 2006 Mateel Community Center members and tickets are $30 at the door.
