As one of the festival's headliners, Mikey Dread is one of the closing performers on Sunday July 17th - the last day of the three-day event set to take place this July 15th, 16th, 17th at the Old Port of Montreal. Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound. Mikey's work with The Clash has probably garnered him the most recognition because it was significant to the integration of reggae into popular music throughout the world. However, his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned punk stars from London. One of Mikey's first accomplishments was his radio show, "Dread at the Controls" which was firmly established as the number one radio show on the J.B.C. (Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation) in the late 1970's. In a move to expand his career, Mikey Dread took a more active role in production and produced records for Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, Earl Sixteen, Wally Bucker, Sunshine, Jah Grundy, Rod Taylor and most notably for the The Clash. This collaboration produced "Bank Robber" which charted number 12 on the British charts giving the group its highest chart entry, and "Black Market Clash", which sold over 3 million copies. His work on The Clash's most famous album "Sandinista" is internationally recognized. In 1992, Mikey also collaborated with former Guns n' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin on a duet entitled "Can't Hear 'Em" (Geffen Reocrds). Mikey Dread has been able to parlay his musical expertise and formal education in media production to produce and host several tv and radio programs in Jamaica, London, the Netherlands, Australia, and The U.S. Not only has Mikey been able to sustain his career on the mic but behind it as well. For more information on Mikey Dread please visit: www.mikeydread.com. Mikey Dread is planning a 2005 re-release of his debut album "Dread At The Controls" on CD. NEW RELEASE - BOB's BAR by URBAN TRIBE !!! Reggae fans everywhere - here is a great new reggae sound coming from Sweden Europe, the land of ABBA, Volvo and IKEA, and with just as much potential to conquer the world - don't miss this!! This eleven-piece band complete with horn section delivers a brilliant collection of exciting, inspirational, toe-tapping roots rock reggae music. Reminiscent of the music and lyrics by Bob Marley, Steel Pulse and reggaes great bands, the seasoned musicians comprising this group makes an impressive first outing. The inspiration to form the group happened while the lead singer, Adam, was on vacation in Thailand and started to write a tribute song to Bobs Bar a wonderful little reggae bar by the beach in Thailand. The whole thing snowballed and two months later, Adam had material for a whole album. The album was recorded during the summer of 2004 and is now being released internationally for the first time. In Thailand, Bobs Bar was more or less leveled by the tsunami on Boxing D! ay 2004 so 20% of all the proceeds from the sale of the album will go directly to Bob to help him rebuild the bar. Revolution Pick up your copy today, supplies are limited http://www.reggaecd.com/store/mcart.php?ID=13727 Review below: by Chuck Foster, The Beat Magazine, June 2005 Eleven Songs from the heart delivered with tasty reggae touches from Urban Tribe make Bob's Bar a delightful set from beginning to end. From the socially observant "Fool With A Gun" to the closing notes of "Revolution" this one has a bouncy, informed feel with lots of poppy hooks and hot licks that makes it worth hearing again. Whether taking on the bullies of the world ("Bump Dem," "Chant Them Down") or ancient evil ("Silver and Gold") the songs are thoughtful and thought provoking and the singing and playing will make you want to dance and think at the same time. "Soul Rebel" (not the Marley song) dips into dancehall without loosing its bubbly groove. The title track, inspired by a favorite spot destroyed by the Southeast Asian tsunami, is a loving tribute to a place that no longer is and so heartfelt it is the outstanding track of the set. Recorded in Stockholm, this one is for the world. ~~Chuck Foster, The Beat Magazine One Love... The Staff EJANESS, Inc. ARTICLE. EVER.-Sierra Nevada World Music Festival Date: Wed, 22 Jun 2005 10:53:48 -0700 From: Herb D The article about the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival and the "numerous" arrests is misleading at best and malicious at worst. The music was excellent, the crowd happy and the event was almost entirely peaceful. The local police presence, unlike previous years, was intense and provocative, "investigating" anyone who looked different than the normal tourist/vacationer; the SNWMF security was more than adequate to police the area for hard drugs and alcohol abuse, and otherwise provide for the safety of the festival goers. Why the show of force? How many violent confrontations were there? Almost none. If your intention is to chase out of your area an event that creates income for the public services and infrastructure of gold country, you all are doing a great job of it. This is an event that places a premium on positivity, creativity and caring for one's fellow human being and environment. Angels Camp and Calaveras County should be glad to host such an event, and should refrain from any shortsighted attempts to run it out of town, such as is evidenced in this inflammatory and one-sided article. I would like to see instead a review of the festival's great music, food and camaraderie, which have made the SNWMF a must for thousands of music lovers (who incidentally buy lots of fuel and camping supplies from the local merchants) for over a decade. Sincerely, Herbert S. Daly Stamina! The Ariwa Story... by David Katz. **** Last week's updates at http://www.reggae-vibes.com **** Morgan Heritage's new album, "Full Circle", is an accessible, well produced effort. Anthony B's "Black Star" is an aggressive and exciting album. M Records have unleashed a very fine Turbulence album entitled "I Believe". "Riddim Driven ~ Bingie Trod" is a real standout based on a foundation of traditional nyahbinghi drums with a fine bassline, and gorgeous vocals. The Frenchie produced "Fowl Fight" is a must have for the dancehall massive.
