Reggae Fest Must Sees Headliners: Yellowman: As Jamaica's first dancehall superstar, Yellowman ushered in a new era of reggae music following Bob Marley's death. His early '80s success brought the popularity of toasting -- the reggae equivalent of rapping -- to a whole new level, and helped establish dancehall as the wave of the future. Best known songs: "Zunguguzungguzeng", "I'm Getting Married", "Mr. Chin", "Nobody Move". Shinehead: Getting his start around 1980, through the dancehall sound systems of New York, Shinehead paid his dues until 1988, when he was signed to a major label. Musically, Shinehead's training stems from a solid dual foundation of Reggae and Hip Hop. As such, not only does Shinehead sing, but he also DJ's (chanting/toasting) and raps as well. Best known songs: "Jamaican in New York" a remake of Sting's "Englishman in New York", "Buff Bay", "Hello Y'all", "Who The Cap Fits". John Holt: At a time when ska was withering and rocksteady was rising to take its place, John Holt along with The Paragons were Jamaica's premier vocal group, with a string of hits in the 60's. Arguably, the best work the singer recorded in the early '70s was for Bunny Lee, including the classic "Tonight." However, the duo's biggest success was a cover of "Stick By Me", arranged to take advantage of the latest dance craze, the John Crow. The song stuck to the Jamaican charts for an amazing 23 weeks and became the biggest-selling single of the year. Best known songs: "The Tide Is High", "On The Beach", "Ali Baba", "If I Was A Carpenter", "Police In Helicopter". Gregory Isaacs: At a time when his lengthy career could reasonably be expected to slow down, Gregory Isaacs continues to elevate himself to the point of being counted among the greatest of contemporary Jamaican vocalists. Isaacs was able to make a name for himself with his love songs which have given him a female following that has not deserted him to this day. Best known songs: "Night Nurse", "Slavemaster", "Number One", "Top Ten", "Mr. Brown", "Rumours". Sugar Minott: One of the true renaissance men of reggae - equally accomplished as a producer and a singer, Minott is also a successful promoter and record label owner and has run his own reggae sound system, Youth Promotion. His releases provided the blueprints for the rise of the contemporary dancehall style. Some of Minott's best work involved collaborations with artists such as Junior Reid on 1992's "Wah Them a Do". Best known songs: "Mr. DC", "Good Thing Going", "Vanity", "River Jordan", "Sprinter Stayer". Mikey Dread: Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His radio show, "Dread at the Controls" was firmly established as the number one radio show on the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1970s. Mikey's work on The Clash's most famous album "Sandinista" is internationally recognized. Best known songs: "Roots and Culture", "Dread At The Controls", "Break Down The Walls", "Barber Saloon". Jimmy Riley: His first success came as a member of The Sensations who recorded such hits as "Everyday Is Just a Holiday". As a solo singer and writer, Riley worked with a host of Jamaican producers, before settling in with Sly and Robbie in the early 1980s. Their production on Riley's version of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" helped the song top the reggae charts in 1983. Best known songs: "My Conversation", "Ruffer Yet", "Love And Devotion", "Watch That Sound". Chaka Demus & Pliers: Not even Bob Marley can match the success of Chaka Demus & Pliers on the British charts. Between June 1993 and January 1995 they had a record five consecutive UK Top 20 entries, including "Twist & Shout", their No. 1 hit with Jack Radics. The combination of Pliers' yearning vocals and Chaka Demus' rockstone chat proved irresistible to their new-found global audience as they became household names. Among their accomplishments, they have earned a Gold disc for the debut Island Jamaica album, "Tease Me". Best known songs: "Murder She Wrote", "A Terror". Morgan Heritage: Until their arrival in 1992, reggae had not seen or heard a band quite like Morgan Heritage. Self proclaimed Soldiers of the Lord, their music breathes spirituality and positivity. Much like the Wailers before them, Morgan Heritage captures the vibrations of the Lord and Spirit of Rastafari in both their music and their lives. Often set in front of a penetrating roots backdrop, the group's vocals appear more suited to R&B rhythms. The roots sound and soulful vocals may almost be a contradiction in terms, but in Morgan Heritage, it is a wonderful contrast. Best known songs: "Don't Hafi Dread", "Down By The River", "Jah Seed", "Best Friend". Reggae Fest's Top Upcoming Artists: Steele: Since 1992, when he first embarked on the musical circuit in Toronto, Steele has made an indelible imprint on reggae audiences. Having appeared locally, nationally and internationally, Steele has shared the stage with some of reggae's most respected artists such as Rita Marley, Freddie McGregor, and Glenn Washington. His first release, "Uncorrupted", has garnered much attention including a Juno nomination in 2005. Mikey Dangerous: has been steady exploding on the international scene performing alongside numerous dancehall sensations including Supercat, Beenie Man, and Elephant Man. He has also collaborated with platinum selling hip hop group Dubmatique from his hometown of Montreal and award winning Montreal reggae artist Jah Cuttah. Sael: Born on the Eastern Caribbean island of Martinique, Sael spent his early years hanging around local studios where he met popular local artists. With the encouragement of these peers, Sael began his vocal training and his career was underway. One of his first singles, got the local award for "best ragga song" in 2000, while striking a very positive chord among reggae audiences. Currently, Sael has videos in rotation in the Caribbean and has many fans not only in his hometown but as far away as Guinea, Africa. This is Sael's second year performing at the Montreal Reggae Festival due to very positive crowd response in 2004. Le ligendaire chanteur a aussi enregistri une autre sirie de grands succhs solos durant les annies 70 pour Bunny Lee, dibutant avec le classique "Tonight."
