New Born Tribe, 3509 NE MLK Blvd. The Sea, 318 SW 3rd House of Records (Eugene) Presented by Higher Reasoning Reggae Time PORTLAND: The I Grade Records Reggae Showcase will come to The Red Sea in Portland on Friday July 29th.. The tour features several of the finest talents from the U.S. Virgin Islands including Army, Abja, NiyoRah, and Ancient King. These vocalists are the latest artists to emerge from these small Caribbean Islands following the recent successes of Midnite and Dezarie, who have taken the International Reggae scene by storm. In the early 70's, Jamaica was bubbling with an incredible amount of untapped musical and vocal talents. That same level of energy, enthusiasm, and potential is present today in the Virgin Islands. -MORE- This tour surrounds the release of a trilogy of new releases from the I Grade Records label featuring Army's third effort, "Rasta Awake," and the debut albums for NiyoRah (A Different Age) and Ancient King (Conquering Sound). These new works have been well-received by Reggae DJs and fans across the globe and are currently climbing the charts in the U.S. and Europe. Army is to be counted among the many conscious singers and players of instruments from St. Croix who are worthy of international recognition. Army (Fritzmaurice Williams) was born and raised on St. Croix, in the Virgin Islands. He began his musical journey at the age of five as a member of the youth choir at the church his family attended laying the foundation for what would become a very promising musical career. After relocating to New York City, completing his education, and serving in the US Army (which is how he got his name), Army returned to St. Croix and became deeply involved in the local reggae scene. In 2000, Army's first album -"Yesterday's News" - was released on Glamorous Records, with production provided by Dean Pond. In 2002, Army linked up with Dub Rise Records who released his second album, "Struggler", along with a re-release of "Yesterday's News." 2003 saw Army releasing the single "Calling Jah Army," a powerful duet with Luciano. With this solid foundation of tunes under his belt, Army embarked on the recording of his highly anticipated third album on the I Grade Records label, "Rasta Awake." Largely produced by legendary guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Tuff Lion (of Midnite and Bambz Station), the album is a masterpiece of all-live instrumentation roots reggae. Army is firmly committed to using his music as a weapon in the war for spiritual renewal and justice for all peoples. As Army describes: "I want to send positive universal messages to people through my music, without the commercialism we see so much today. For me the music is a healing." This tour will be Army's first trip to the West Coast following his performance in June '05 as a part of the "St. Croix Explosion" at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. Abja is a multi-talented singer, singjay, songwriter, and producer hailing from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. While "Inna Red I Hour" (I Grade 2004) is Abja's first full-length release, he has been polishing his studio skills and sharing his gifts with audiences in NYC for several years, as a former vocalist and producer with the Survival Soundz crew out of Brooklyn. Abja is a powerful performer whose spirit and energy transmits to everyone around him. He has a powerful stage presence and sings with strength of purpose; dynamic and confident, yet humble. Ancient King, born Wendell Francois, hails from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. In 2002, he was featured on I Grade Records' acclaimed compilation "Weep Not" recording under the name Willow. On Ancient's first full-length release, Conquering Sound, he again teams up with I Grade Records to create one of the most innovative albums by a conscious chanter in this current time. Like most of the messages in the Virgin Islands' roots reggae movement, Ancient King's songs are firmly rooted in the tradition of Rastafari rebel music. His powerful and unique delivery combines with intensely relevant lyrics that stand firm on principles of truth and right. -MORE- Nigel "NiyoRah" Olivacce was born on October 9, 1980 in the coastline village of Pointe Michel, Dominica. At age 4, he moved to St. Thomas, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. By age 16, NiyoRah began chanting on the streets about the life experiences of the Savan ghetto in downtown Charlotte Amalie and at 18 NiyoRah decided to pursue a career in reggae music. He took on the name NiyoRah - a combination of his nickname growing up and out of respect for the omnipotent power of the sun. In 1998, NiyoRah joined with six other reggae artists to co-found the group Star Lion Family. His voice can be heard on Star Lion Family's EP Brighter Days released in November 2003. The songs on NiyoRah's debut LP "A Different Age" delve into a wide range of issues, including cultural living, love for nature, strengthening of all peoples, especially Africans, and spiritual growth. The I Grade tour also features Selector Aba Shaka, of Atlanta's Musical Ark of Jah Kovenant Sound System, who will spin deep roots reggae to open up the show. Aba Shaka's skills as an operator and reputation as a keeper of the "Ark" of rare tunes are legendary. A self-described "vinyl musician", Aba takes his role as selector very seriously and honorably. Tickets to the concert are $14 in advance and $17 at the door on the night of the show. Presale tickets will be available at House of Records in Eugene, Jackpot Records locations in Portland, and New Born Tribe Culture Store located at MLK & Fremont in NE Portland. All Patrons 21 and over with a valid ID are welcome to attend. The Red Sea is located at 318 SW Third Street in Portland. The phone number of the venue is (503) 241-5450. Although I attend many reggae festivals in various countries, I cannot find adequate words to express the respect and admiration I have for the organizers of this festival. The line-up was a very creative mix of reggae and African related music orchestrated in a timely and efficient on two different stages. The atmosphere surrounding the stages was low key and peaceful, although the many children in attendance were busy hula hooping, wading through little streams and dancing in front of and at times on the stage itself. The press tent and all pre-concert information sent to media people was beyond expectations. In particular, I received biographies in advance of all artists. This took someone a tremendous amount of work and I just want to say how well appreci-loved it was. Food and drink was exceptional and the vendors, especially for a non-Californian, was extreme delight. Although, I heard some rumbling about too much police presence at the show, I never felt any vibes from them and the organizers never showed stress or shortness of patience with anyone as far as I could tell. I think this is one of the best shows I have ever been to in the US. The shows in Jamaica only have the edge of being in Jamaica. Even so, my husband who was born and raised in Westmoreland parish, ran into many oldtime Jamaican friends he had not seen in many years. Many many thanks to all of the crew from SNWMF! This show is a massive undertaking and one that goes a tremendous way in helping reggae move forward in the US of A. I took several hundred photos and hope to have them up on my site at www.consciousparty.com very soon. Please feel free to also join our message board on the Lion's Den page. We would love to see you there. http://www.consciousparty.com/forum/public/index.cgi?#8530 You can register by clicking 'create profile' at the top of the page. A password is then sent which you can change to one of your own by going back and clicking 'edit profile.' We look forward to more discussions about the joy and challenges of the reggae music industry. International members are especially welcomed! come one, come all.
