Productions Two very special RAW artists will be appearing Saturday, July 23, Selassie's Earthday, at the Northwest World Reggae Festival in Woodburn, Oregon: R.A.W. #201, CASPER LOMAYESVA (AKA Casper from Hopiland or Casper Loma-Da-Wa), was born and raised on the Third Mesa of the Hopi Nation in Arizona. His music is inspired both by the spiritual wisdom of traditional Hopi culture passed on by the tribal elders and by the crucial sound and power of reggae music. --Jamaican-born RAS MIDAS (R.A.W. #405) is one of the original roots reggae songwriters, composers and singers of the Bob Marley era. A world traveler who has spent much time in the USA, Europe and Africa, Midas extends the boundaries of roots reggae, blending flavors of jazz, R&B, and African musics into his unique sound. Both artists will be backed by the ROOT AWAKENING band (R.A.W. #374) from the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the best reggae bands on the West Coast. The tour features several of the finest talents from the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, including Army, Abja, NiyoRah, and Ancient King. This community event is all ages so bring the whole family to enjoy conscious roots music plus Ital food, drinks and craft vendors. The I Grade St Croix Reggae Showcase tour features several of the finest talents from the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, including Army, Abja, NiyoRah, and Ancient King. These vocalists are the latest artists to emerge from the small Caribbean Island following the recent success of Midnite and Dezarie, who have taken the International Reggae scene by storm. In the early 70s. Jamaica was bubbling with an incredible amount of untapped musical and vocal talents. That same level of energy, enthusiasm and potential is present today in the Virgin Island of St Croix. This tour surrounds the release of a trilogy of new releases from the I Grade Label featuring Armys third effort, Rasta Awake, and the debut albums for NiyoRah and Ancient King. These new works have been well-received by Reggae DJs and fans across the globe and are currently climbing the charts in the U.S. and Europe. Army is to be counted among the many conscious singers and players of instruments from St. Croix who are worthy of international recognition. Army (Fritzmaurice Williams) was born and raised on St. Croix, in the Virgin Islands. He began his musical journey at the age of five as a member of the youth choir at the church his family attended, laying the foundation for what would become a very promising musical career. After relocating to the New York City, completing his education, and serving in the US Army (which is how he got his name), Army returned to St. Croix and became deeply involved in the local reggae scene. In 2000, Armys first album Yesterdays News was released on Glamorous Records, with production provided by Dean Pond. In 2002, Army linked up with Dub Rise Records who released his second album, Struggler, along with a re-release of Yesterdays News. 2003 saw Army releasing the single Calling Jah Army, a powerful duet with Luciano. With this solid foundation of tunes under his belt, Army embarked on the recording of his highly anticipated third album on the I Grade label, Rasta Awake. Largely produced by legendary guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Tuff Lion (of Midnite and Bambu Station), the album is a masterpiece of all-live instrumentation roots reggae. Army is firmly committed to using his music as a weapon in the war for spiritual renewal and justice for all peoples. As Army describes, I want to send positive universal messages to people through my music, without the commercialism we see so much todayFor me the music is a healing. This tour will be Armys first trip to the West Coast following his performance in June as a part of the St. Croix Explosion at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. Abja is a multi-talented singer, singjay, songwriter and producer hailing from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. While Inna Red I Hour (I Grade 2004) is Abjas first full-length release, he has been polishing his studio skills and sharing his gifts with audiences in NYC for several years, as a former vocalist and producer with the Survival Soundz crew out of Brooklyn. Abja is a powerful performer whose spirit and energy transmit to everyone around him. He sings with a strength of purpose, with a dynamic and confident, yet humble, stage presence. Ancient King, born Wendell Francois, hails from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. In 2002, he was featured on I Grade Records acclaimed compilation Weep Not, recording under the name, Willow. On Ancients first full-length release, Conquering Sound, he again teams up with I Grade Records to create one of the most innovative albums by a conscious chanter in this current time. Like most of the messages in the VIs roots reggae movement, Ancient Kings songs are firmly rooted in the tradition of Rastafari rebel music. His powerful and unique delivery combines with intensely relevant lyrics that stand firm on principles of truth and right. Nigel NiyoRah Olivacce was born on October 9, 1980 in the coastline village of Pointe Michel, Dominica. At age four, he moved to St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. By age 16, NiyoRah began chanting on the street about the life experiences of the Savan ghetto in downtown Charlotte Amalie, and at 18 NiyoRah decided to pursue a career in reggae music. He took on the NiyoRah a combination of his nickname growing up and out of respect for the omnipotent power of the sun. In 1998, NiyoRah joined with six other reggae artists to co-found the group Star Lion Family. His voice can be heard on Star Lion Familys EP Brighter Days released in November 2003. The songs on NiyoRahs debut LP A Different Age delve into a wide range of issues, including cultural living, love for nature, strengthening of all peoples, especially Africans, and spiritual growth. The I Grade Tour also features Selector Aba Shaka of Atlantas Musical Ark of the Kovenant Sound System, who will spin deep roots reggae to open up the show. Aba Shakas skills as an operator and reputation as a keeper of the Ark of rare tunes are legendary. A self-described vinyl musician, Aba takes his role as selector very seriously and honorably. Who causes all things to be. Second: I would like to give Thanks to my Boss Jamaican Reggae Legend, Mr. Mikey Dread, for insisting that I attend the Festival. Mikey knows best. (smile) Third: Give Thanks for Cezar Brumeau and Staff, for taking on a tremendous task in putting on a festival this size and in the heart of Montreal. This was accomplished with a very small crew, was still Irie. Moving on to the meat. I have to say this is the first time I've ever attended a concert or festival that I spent so much time in the hotel lobby. (smile). It was still cool: hey, that's entertainment right, being in Radio and Working for International Stars such as Mikey Dread and Inner Visions You learn quickly to go with the flow. (smile). As it was, the flow was too cool. The Hotel LaTour Centre Ville, Montreal Canada, where we were all housed, the lobby was like a Jamaican Reggae Artist social club. It was nice. All my brothers were more than accommodating, making sure my time in Montreal, Canada was enjoyable and it was. Each of them played a large part in the Overall positive vibe at Montreal's Reggae Festival 2005. Sometimes, it's just nice to chill with the Brethren from yard. I arrived in Montreal too late to catch Chaka Demus and Pliers Perform. No sweat being the Sweetheart Pliers is, he made his presence known to me, once they reached the hotel. Thanks for the love Pliers. Chaka Demus is still a character, you are both a joy. As I say: the Hotel Lobby was the center of the who's who in Reggae, being there was just like being in Jamaica surrounded by all of my brothers. The feeling was both warm and inviting. I attend many Reggae Festivals through the years in many lands, but I have to say. This is the first time in a long time that I actually felt as if we were still connected by music to our roots, Jamaica. Pure patois flowed through the air. Everyone meet and greet, take pictures and chat-a- bout as if we were at a long overdue family Reunion. The Love and Unity and the Positive Vibes shown over the weekend serves as a reminder to us all, that Jamaica has produced the most talented Reggae Artists in the World and it's all Culturally intertwined around Jamaican Culture. Through our music all roads lead back to the Roots of the Roots of things, sweet, sweet Jamaica, the land we love. Give thanks also to the Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaac . Thanks for the Pass and the chat a bout. It must be a Jamaican thing: as every time we take pictures we have to take the same picture twice (to make sure). I thought I was the only one to say take two please, to make sure, but, as we were all taking pictures everyone was saying take twice mon, mek sure. (smile). Gregory is just a sweetheart of a man, very gentile. I enjoyed your company. I missed his stage performance also as he performed earlier that day. I am told, no sweat Gregory always put on a needle perfect show. Ladies continues to love up the master of Cool. Gregory Isaac. Next up was someone I had never met, but have heard a lot about: Johnny Dread, the coolest Cuban Rasta to date. I overheard someone in the crowd refer to Johnny Dread as being the slickest. The vibes I get from Johnny is the same as I was experiencing from my Jamaican Brethren. Real nice. It is my pleasure to be introduced to this Cuban wonder. I can't get enough of his sounds, after all it is Johnny's The Book of Revelations more to come on Johnny Dread. Give thanks to Mr. Vincent for keeping me company and seeding through the long list of artists and photographing us all. Mr. Vincent (Jamaican) Nephew is Johnny Dreads Bassist. Also give thanks to Sniper my unofficial bodyguard for the night. Also, acting as liaison between myself and many of the band members for all the Artistes on the Roster. Keeping my person safe and explaining to me the process of doing Dub Plates and the Snow connection! Sniper was there to do dub plates for Chaka Demus and Pliers as well as Shinehead and others. Gliding along: After too many hours chatting about, finally get to the room and sleep at 3:00am only to be awaken at 8:30am by one of the Artists who was leaving that day and inviting me for breakfast, which I gladly accepted. (smile). After breakfast, we met up with some of the other Artists who was leaving that day, Sunday and we shop for 3 hours!!! I nevah nuh men can shop so! It was enjoyable, hey, how many times Im going to get to enjoy my brothers all together as it was, outside of Jamaica, very seldom. So when they made invitations I happily trotted a long. (smile). Next Stop: Back to the Hotel for Long needed rest. Review some things with my Boss and of course Friend and Mentor Mikey Dread for the show at 8:30Pm. Rest up, get ready go back to the lobby and meet up with Media friends of Mikey from Vermont. Now its time to get to the show. Moving on to the stage performances: Many of you may not know this but!!!! To the pleasure of many Brinsley Forde (former frontman for Aswad is BACK)! Give thanks! Brinsley currently hosts Lively up Yourself a BBC radio show. He must have known We needed their love for more than just an hour - this was a very special meet up for me, as too many years Ive enjoyed Aswads music and have NEVER met them personally! Until Sunday, and I meet up with Brinsley Forde (Aswads lead). Hey Brinsley it was real. Hey thanks for seeking me out! That was special. See I do. Need your love for more than just an hour (smile) Side note: It made my heart so happy to see Brinsley and Mikey meet up on Sunday, they had not seen each other in a long time and it was heartwarming to see the two together. Acting like long lost cousins. (smile). The Media obviously enjoyed the moment also as they had the two constantly either filming or clicking! Mikey and Brinsley are walking Reggae History! >From Robert Roskind we have heard much about Abijah, all things Robert has written on this young Rastaman is so true. His stage performance is flawless, engulfed by all that is positive and uplifting in Reggae. He truly is one of Jahs messengers. It was also a pleasure to final meet him and to see that he still holds dear within the culture of Jamaica and the Roots of Reggae. For sake of space I must move on to Spicy Mikey Dread and the Dread at the Controls Band Its no wonder, Its no secret Mikey Dread's performance is always on the money and a crowd pleaser! He prances and glides across the stage like a Lion in all of its elegance. Mikey is truly an innovator and motivator. It shows in his performance that he truly loves what he does and the people love him. At one point he was singing Dennis Browns Classic Have you Ever Mikeys version was Have you Ever then he threw in his version smoked a pound of wd!.. Took the audience (and myself by surprise) didnt expect that (smile). Before long he had the Audience singing that line and it was all over. The performance just erupted like a volcano from that point on. Mikey singing such classics as : Warrior Stylee. Break down the Walls, Jah Jah Love and my all time favorite Swalk to name a few, yes sir with Mikey Dread at the Controls, Reggae Gone International. Mikey was so connected to the Crowd that he actually left the stage and went to them, it was a delight to see the joy in the faces of the massive when Mikey Dread appeared to them upfront and personal. I can never say this too much, when you choose the Natty Dread, Mikey Dread you choose a good thing. Finally! Yellow Man, Yes, the man Yellow like cheese! Yellowman was Jamaica's first Sing Jay so to speak as today they are referred to as Dance Hall stars. Yes dear hearts, he was long before Beenie man and Bounty Killas time. (smile). Nuff love and Respect to Yellow man, showing the audience that yes he still have what it takes and he remains the King of the Dancehall! And ladies Yellow Man says if your boyfriend is not enough for you, see him! I was a bit surprise that he could be as Rude as he want to be! The original Rude Bwoy! Big up yourself Yellowman! He had us all dancing and jumping about. Oh man I have to tell you when he broke out with his long time hit song, Blueberry Hill I was ecstatic. It's been a long time and I have not seen anyone who can pull that song off better than Fats Domino, Yellow Man Can! Big up yourself Yellow Man. I personally did not grow tired of his company. Get this: we were at the Airport together this morning at 4am!!!! In Montreal. You think any of us got any sleep? Yellow man and Posse thanks for the Hugs! We were at the Airport and of course we have to hug and digging on Yellow man's performance earlier in the night, his right hand man (who by the way reminds me of Oliver Samuels) and I were hugging good by and he say to Yellow Man, "what you think about this". Yellow man say no problem Yuh still short!!!- If you don't get what he meant. Go listen to I-Wayne hit Record Can't satisfy her (seen) More wood for the fire! Can you believe I missed one of my favorite artists ever! Iley Dread on Saturday, Illey how many years we connect by phone yet to link up in person. (smile) Additional Artists who was hospitable to the Queen: Yaya with Soja! Soldiers of Jah Army, Keep it real. Little John (not so little), Rankin Scroo, Sael, Jamaica.com staff. Lots of Band members, lil Amlak , Damian Campbell and Friend. Brinsley cousin Harmoni who by the way is mother to Damian Marleys Road manager. (smile) Peace out darlings! Until. We all knew, going into it, that the weather was gonna be a disaster, nuff people stayed home on account of it, even when the sun broke through. Driving winds and rain were reigning the night before. I went to the site that midnight myself - it's hard to imagine how the crew got the stage and everything fully operational (somewhat on schedule) for show time the next day. Anyway, by opening, at 1pm, the clouds were still threatening - indeed there were two downpours later - but they were quick to pass, and for the first artists, there was the best clearing, sunlit splendor we expect from an outdoor stage show. Mighty Mystic & Arryval each gave spirited deliveries over tracks (the DJ'd been playing for some time), working the stage in full dancehall style as DUB STATION waited in the background to begin their backing set. Diamond Plus, who'd been scheduled to perform first, with live backing, was late and appeared later, as the various DJ's niced up the quick set changes between live acts. Because of the weather delays, the sound men took a minute to cue up the mics properly for Andrew G and Journalist, who both gave their all in spite of the technical difficulties. A gospel/dancehall artist, Andrew G's turned his life around with faith, and has put out several successful releases. So, too, has Journalist, with brand new product awaiting release as we speak. DUB STATION really came out from the shadows once SHAKA BLACK took the stage (bassist Kyle Russell particularly, who walked out in front of the monitors to share the rays with his lead singer) - especially given their long history backing SHAKA now for 16 years. Given the distance of the VIP fence from the bulk of the audience, Shaka's delivery was a bit "from the mountaintop," but he won the ladies over with some lovers rock and the guys, too, with his characteristic dancehall mixes and deep cultural lyrics, closing out spiritually with the anthem "Chant Rastafari." Big things are planned for this crew in the fall...stay tuned. Luciano "brought down the rain," but performed steadily throughout, delivering a long-awaited new set of material with his tight band and of course, the eternal Dean Fraser on sax. The original crossover artist Toots & his Maytals demonstrated that even after being on the road for 30+ years, it's possible to be in top form, both physically and vocally. Each artist of the day had a special delivery for each of us, or rather, for different parts of us: the devotional, the slack, the partier... The anticipation for headliner Buju Banton's appearance (to be the first in the U.S. since he'd overcome his visa problems) - coupled with the 2nd downpour - didn't seem to irk folks, who took it all in stride. Except by the time of Elephant Man's set, by hook or by crook, the VIP area'd filled to the brim. I'd seen Elephant Man before, and not been enticed by all the hype, even with a band (featuring Roundhead et al). But this time, without a band (and instead, just sporting a sampling whiz sidekick), he convinced me of his title: the Energy God. It was as if there was a full - ridiculously tight - band behind him, and as a performer myself, I was well impressed. Some were not so surprised - others irate - and for the next 10 days the rumors flew, about why Buju Banton didn't end up on stage that day. But truly, as the promoters have maintained, it was an act of God that had delayed his flights (hurricane force winds in Jamaica, Thursday) - complicated by the fact that he had a crew of 17 that had to be rebooked over the next 2 days - which all conspired to get him to New York too late that evening (no direct flights) to be on stage before the venue's closing, at 10pm. It was a technical impossibility for Buju Banton to show up. He's since called in his apologies to and via several radio stations, and a special deal's being formulated to offset ticket holders ire, and satisfy their hunger for his next Boston appearance. Relatively speaking, the disappointment oughtn't have dampened what was truly a great day of entertainment. Truthfully, folks wouldn't have paid that much less for a club date with any one of these artists (all of whom performed full sets) and how often do you get to see them in the light of day, with your whole family, vendors, and Irie Jamaican (restaurant's) food. Given the challenging forces of nature, the Reggae Summer Jam in Boston came off pretty well for being its first incarnation. We'll look forward to many more... You put out all different kinds of RAWsters. I was wondering if you would have a Caribbean DJ and Festival Promoter RAWster with contact names, phone nos., and email addresses. I know I want everything. I'm trying to promote Inner Visions in the Caribbean and have not been successful at finding who I need. I need connections. I want to be able to send music out and hopefully get a good tour booked in the Caribbean for them when they come home from their stateside tour in the beginning of November. So anything you can send my way would be appreciative. Let me know. Thanks and have a great day!
