HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the PROPHET, MARCUS!!! The Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in St. Ann's, Jamaica, on August 17th, 1887, five years before the birth of Ras Tafari Makonnen in the Harar province of Ethiopia, Africa. He is considered by many Jamaicans, and especially Rastafarians, as the supreme prophet of prophets, for it was he who alerted our people to the COMING of the King of Kings with his calls of "Up ye mighty race..." and "Look to Ethiopia for the crowning of a King..." Marcus' main mantra simply put was and still is "One God, One Aim, One Destiny" even for all mankind. When he brought his philosophy and message of "Repatriation for all Africans back to Africa" to the shores of America he was despised by a man by the name of J. Edgar Hoover who considered Marcus falsely to be a trouble-maker. In those days the system's separationist catch-word was "commie" and of course they did not want Marcus to spread his doctrines of repatriation to the ears of American blacks who at that time had the very minimum of rights in the land, to the point of almost next to nothing. Those were the beginning times of Hoover's FBI and the KKK was still very much blatantly running rampant in many parts of the country. In those days Africans who self-taught themselves out of the clutches of illiteracy and ignorance were for some "strange" reason considered a threat to the newly emerging "corporate-christian sect". In those days again for some "strange" reason, things like cross-burnings, and murder and castration of young black men, and the murder and rape of young black women were not cosidered "terrorism" (the new catch-word today being "terrorist" instead of "commie"). Hoover never stopped hounding Marcus until he finally succeeded in ousting him from out of America. While in England the Prophet appealed to the then Prime Minister of England, Sir Winston Churchill, putting such questions to him as, "Where is the black man's government? where is the black man's parliament? where is the black man's man of big affairs?". Unfortunately the life story of the Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey cannot be told without the mention of J. Edgar Hoover and yet all his efforts to halt progress have proven to be absolutely unfruitful and unsuccessful as we now can see the youths from every walk of life, from the suburbs to the ghettos of the world, blissfully grooving to the positive vibrations of ONE LOVE, blissfully grooving to the positive vibrations of the music of our KING of KINGS! It is amazing how many people today are clueless about the very real struggles that our truly great leaders had to experience in the very recent past so that we today may be able to enjoy the many freedoms that we enjoy. So to my universal brothers and sisters I say again, let us I-nite in one great big blissfully "terrible and dreadful" voice come August 17th and say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARCUS !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the PROPHET !!! 5. GAS PRICES GOING UP?! AGAIN!!! There's something that has been on my mind recently, even more so when I get into my car and go near a gas pump... It seems that every time we look around here in southern California gas prices go up...is it just me? am I imagining things? or does everyone basically feel the same way about this situation? I don't get it! was not that one of the main reasons for the Iraqi invasion (apart from "total world domination" ;0). or was it really about "weapons of mass destruction" ;0). Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world and it's second only to Saudi Arabia...even though our illustrious president, George W., may look a certain way, and may sound a certain way, he certainly ain't stupid, BUT are we?! The majority of us tend to put our hands in the air and say that there is nothing that we can do about it, but this is absolutely not true, and only the TRUTH can truly set us free!!! Our congressmen and senators are not going to do anything about it because it seems that they can afford it even if the gas prices were at $3.00 per gallon... As usual, it's the working class and the poor who are feeling the crunch, the "grassroots" community. Some may feel that the solution is to escape into the mountains and live a humble life away from automobiles and computers, etc. Maximum respect to these lions and lionesses for these are the true high priests and priestesses of our global community in a manner of speaking... For those of us Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide who are fighting the battle live and direct in the city-centers of the world, and who do not have the benefit of escaping to the mountains, we all seem to experience similar realizations... It is clearly obvious to all that today's mis-technology has made it so that life is moving at such a rapid pace that it almost seems impossible to accomplish everything in one day that needs to be accomplished without some form of transportation. It would be hypocritical and self-defeating for me to tell everyone not to drive their automobiles while I am driving mine. After all, our children still need to go to school, and they need food to eat, we have to get them to the doctor if they are seriously ill, etc. Bottom line, we still need gas to put into our cars BUT here is a little grassroots idea that I heard through the grapevine that I would like to pass along and share with those who care to listen... This idea could very easily grow and become an attainable reality but it calls for us all to truly UNITE at the grassroots level, no matter your religion, nor your race, nor ethnicity, no matter rich nor poor, man nor woman, let us UNITE through concentrated action! The key word here is boycott! It really works. Our leaders for some reason have come to believe that we are puny and weak and that they can influence us into going along with anything that they dish out to us whether humane or not. In this case, let's prove them wrong! Let's not only try really hard not to buy gas from EXXON/MOBIL for at least the next year but let us actually DO it, tear up all the EXXON/MOBIL gas cards. If you see an EXXON/MOBIL station beside another station (no matter which other brand) just simply opt for the other station. Like I said before, we cannot get around major metropolitan cities without gas, let's be REALISTIC! So it doesn't matter for now if you get your gas from Shell, or Chevron, or Texaco, or even Arco, just NO EXXON/MOBIL for they are the top predators of the "food-chain" (for now that is) when it comes to the exploitation of the distribution of gas for our automobiles, which in great part affects our livelihood...once and for all, let's put an end to EXXON-PLOITATION!!! Spread the word in whatever way you can my brothers and sisters, one by one we really can make a difference...Peace Out!!! CLOSING STATEMENT !!! In closing, let me say that the race is definitely not for the swift but for the sure people, so slow down and smell the roses... Don't waste your time and energy on negativity for there is so much more grace to be found in that which is positive... Never feel ashamed to tell loved ones that you love them for life is too short... Never be slow to lend a helping hand wherever you can for whatever you do in life surely comes back to you...
