For Immediate Release - May, 2005 IDC has expanded again and not only in sales and retail outlets but in quality music as well! Representing a growing shift in current market trends, Independent Distribution Collective is proud to present our fifth round music solicitation. Aimed squarely at our current retail sales points as well as the non-traditional retail stores specializing in youth culture, those hotbeds of grassroots movement and the place where pop culture is born. IDC announces yet another music expansion: this in addition to the high quality music you've come to expect from the soul of independent music distribution. With this new release IDC slams straight into the heart of the independent rock scene and the hearts and minds of the fans that make this music relevant, alive and kicking. Some punk, some hardcore, true rock and roll all, IDC does it with style. Of course, there are some names here you should know but there's also that indie music Holy Grail: those new and previously unknown names bringing up the hurtling juggernaut of the sound that keeps our distribution offerings at the forefront, that represents IDC as the most consistently powerful and captivating musical expression around. IDC has that sound! Check out this round's titles below: Death, Rattle & Roll - Various Artists Compilation WONDERTAKER RECORDS is a dumpster-diving Northern California (pronounce it like Arnold!) indie hardcore label showcasing Rob and Sluggo's (the founders) favorite face-melting sounds. Crank this sucker up and mow people down with charged-up prime listening rock of the highest order. Ride through potent riffs, metallic solos, gritty lyrics and solid songwriting. This 30 cut CD is jam-packed with volatile bands like THE HYDROMATICS, THE NITWITZ AND THE GRANNIES. Guaranteed to open with both barrels. The Grannies - Erected Ladyman THE GRANNIES CD "Erected Ladyman" kicks ass from start to finish, a hot-on-the-burner tile-blaster of belligerent, raucous and downright scary raw punk energy. Somewhere between the Mono Men, KISS-meets-The-Simpsons-Retirement-Castle and the Makers, THE GRANNIES are titans of killer punk rock guitar, a jet engine roar of fire-starting brutality. What could make it better? Old lady outfits! Heavily checked for by such diverse punk throwrags, zines and websites as: Razorcake, Blender, Backfire, Toxic Flyer, Trashcompactor and Sleazegrinder Motorhome - Black Lung Mixed and mastered by Seattle grunge legend Jack Endino (think Nirvana's "Bleach") MOTORHOME is brazen kick ass boogie, raw and dirty with whiskey-n-cigs vocals, blazing leads and bulldozer drumming. Does it rock? Goddamn, does it ever! An ass blast of redneck riff-metal mixed with suicide-boogie speed-rockin', MOTORHOME is cranking slabs of trailer-park thunder from the top of busy skate ramps and selling out the clubs. Soul Brains - A Bad Brains Reunion The legendary punk / reggae band, BAD BRAINS reunites in this incendiary mixture of raging hardcore punk, deftly thudding metal and heartfelt, liquid reggae, bristling with spiritual fervor. A band to be held in awe adding their tumultuous, internal volatility and expressing it through galloping thrashers; BAD BRAINS' tremendous influence is clearly experienced on this explosive live CD, a must-have for anyone into the one band that started an unholy alliance between punk, hardcore, rock and reggae Flut - Puppy 4 Life FLUT is a distortion laced & bottom-heavy simplicity (think the Breeders or Jawbreaker) of story-telling nursery rhymes for the psychotic. Antagonistic and absolutely wonderful, the San Francisco-based three-piece comes with a brute honesty and little room for manners. Genre and gender bending, FLUT is a punk folk jazz beauty. A sparse noir powerhouse that is, in fact, all that. Griddle - Turning Violet A startling discovery, the hard-working, touring GRIDDLE melds garage punk, rock 'n' roll, and even prog into one giddy rush, (think: Ramones, Flaming Lips, Minutemen, Van Der Graff Generator). A fabulous modern musical evolution, GRIDDLE effortlessly joins all these elements, even introducing pop and glamrock between the bedsheets and getting it steamy. Imagine their music as a superfine noise-pop soundtrack to "Hedwig and the Angry Inch pt.2: The German Impressionist Years." Cuatro Caminos - el bong de titaneo Self-described "mariachi dub outer space band" CUATRO CAMINOS is an accidental fabulosity of three disparate musicians whose end result has already resulted in their inclusion into a movie soundtrack and uncountable, spontaneous college radio airplays. All over the musical map like Parliament Funkadelic 70's soul and Latin jazz with Hawaiian reggae, cowboy ballads, and great everywhere you land, this music bounces better than Cake and sweeter than Flaming Lips. Mexican relatives of Nick Cave and Jon Spencer, a Latin invasion mixed with an alien invasion, with summathat Southwestern seasoning melded with the Zappa-esque nuances CUATRO CAMINOS is damn great music. When Beck gets good again, he might just sound like this. Check out http://www.independentdistro.com for more information on these or any of the other fine products in IDC's catalog! These concerts are free, non-commercial, and unsponsored. All recording artists and speakers donate their time and energy. Recent concerts were joint ventured by PALS (Peace & Love in Society), a Jamaican non-profit organization that has been teaching conflict resolution in the schools on the island for years. Travel espenses were provided by the Jamaican Hotel and Tourist Association. The concerts feature Abijah and other internationally-known conscious reggae and gospel recording artists, all known for their message of One Love. The artists perform for the youths and reason with them about exercising greater love and forgiveness in their lives. These artists, all heroes to the youths of Jamaica, also discuss other threats such as drugs, weapons and violence. The concert, called "Bob Marley-Natural Mystic:The Legend Lives On," was a collaborative effort of the Jamaican Government, the Bob Marley Foundation and our family. However, the concert was more than a celebration. It was a calling to Jamaica, and every person joining us, to claim their God-given destiny of teaching One Love in their lives. PERFORMERS: Abijah, Ernie Smith, Bunny Wailer, Culture, Mackie Conscious, Warrior King, Cherry Natural, Fab 5, Prezident Brown, Janieve & Robert Bailey, Junior Reid & The One Blood Family, Stitchie, Luciano, Fanton Mojah, DYCR, Nomadzz, Stella Maris Dance Troup, C Sharp, Mark Stephenson, Nexus Performing Group, L'Acadco Dance Troup, Toisis, and The Immaculate Conception Orchestra. This event, called "Healing Jamaica With One Love," was our way of inviting everyone in Jamaica, but especially the political, busines, civic and religious leaders, to continue to claim their positions as healers by teaching One Love through their actions. The room was full and all of Jamaica's TV stations broadcast or rebroadcast the event bringing the message to the entire island. His Excellency The Governor General Sir Howard Cooke gave the introductory address following Monsignor Albert, who offered the benediction. The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) donated the venue and stage management. All the artists and emcees performed at no charge. Thanks to the co-operative efforts of much of the media it was aired live in Jamaica on CVMTV, HOT 102, and RJR Radio, and on Linkup Media and PLUSH TV in the US and will be aired this coming week by Reggae Sun, ROOTSFM, TVJ, XM Satellite Radio and RE-TV. Millions of people will share the vibe. This means that 80%+ of the Jamaican listening audience, around two million people, tuned in to a five-hour positive One Love vibe. The reggae recording artists performing included: Abijah, Bushman, DYCR, Fab 5, Cherry & Little Natural, I'ngel Chanta, Junior Reid, Keteis, Mackie Conscious, Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Prezident Brown, Ernie Smith, and Warrior King. The Maroon drummers and dancers from several Maroon villages also performed. Emcees included well-known broadcasters Richie B, Sharon Chambers, Antonnette Haughton, Daniel Thompson, and Elaine Wint. Tourist Minister Assamba also spoke. The concerts featured conscious recording artists Abijah and Zema and reggae groups Uproot and the Lions of Israel. Our message to the Hopi youths reminded them of their prophecies and instructions that they were to continue purifying their tribe to assist in the global purification. Mostly we thanked them for their successfully keeping their Covenant with the Creator to do this. We thanked them for staying on their ancient land and working through the human drama for centuries--work that they were doing for all peoples, not just themselves. They had forgiven their oppressors, learned to live peacefully with the neighboring tribes and to some degree had kept the ancient ceremonies and teachings alive--even their ancient language. They had honored their name "Hopi"--Peaceful People. In April of the following year, the Hopis once again voted against allowing casinos on their reservation. Three hundred Native American tribes had said "yes." The Hopis were the first to say "no." This effort was lead by a traditional Hopi Snake Priest, Radford Quamahongnewa, and his daughter a young Hopi teacher, Dawn Quamahongnewa-Mapatis, who we had met at one of the concerts. They said many of the people who voted against the concert had been to our concerts and had been moved by our message. The goal was to honor the tribe and remind them that they have a Sacred Covenant with the Creator to guard the heart of Mother Earth. Their name means "Protectors of the Heart of Mother Earth." To keep this Covenant, they only need to trust those leaders, both elected and unelected, who truly understand and cherish this Covenant. Anyone who doesn't, does not see the tribe spiritually, only physically and financially, and therefore must be treated as a younger brother or sister, from whom guidance is seldom taken. Also speaking at the concert was traditional Hopi Snake Priest, Radford Quamahongnewa, and his daughter, Dawn Quamahongnewa-Mapatis, who organized the vote to stop casino gambling in Hopiland, and Racquel Burnett from the Leonard Peltier Defense Fund. Conscious reggae band Uproot from Yuma performed as well. Months after the concert, Damon called us to tell us the youths in the village, who had started to dress in black and listen to violent hip-hop, had stopped. As Damon said, "They embraced their Indianness after the concert and now they listen to conscious reggae." The following December the tribe elected a pro-environmental tribal council. The tribal chair is now held by Rex Tilousi, a tribal elder and one of the Havasupai "Keepers of the Secrets." It was broadcast live to the entire island via the Richie B Show, Jamaicas most popular radio program. Hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans tuned in and shared our vision of healing Jamaica through individual acts of One Love and forgiveness. This year's Gathering of the Healers, whose theme is "One Love/ Big Up The Youths," was a combination of musical performances and speakers (healers) discussing with the audience the healing qualities of forgiveness and sharing the vision of Jamaica healing itself as a society. We asked every student attending to forgive as many as they can, as soon as they can, as much as they can in the days and weeks following the concerts. Joining us were conscious recording artists Abijah, Luciano, Ernie Smith, Mackie Conscious, Swade and Denroy Morgan of Morgan Heritage. It was held on February 4, 2002 at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica. During a free concert with conscious artist Abijah, we light a huge "Fire of Forgiveness" asking that healing be brought to the 400 years of African Slavery. This gesture, of descendents of slaves initiating and offering forgiveness to "symbolic" descendents of slave owners, was a powerful symbol of healing and love. Fires and candles were also lit across Jamaica and in several places abroad. Twenty years later, Julia, Alicia and Robert Roskind traveled to Jamaica to learn more about Rastafari-the people and philosophy that inspired his music. Their life-changing odyssey through the towns, villages and mountains of this beautiful island, revealed not only the Rasta way of life but an ancient mystery as well. "RASTA HEART" is truly a journey into One Love. "Riveting... An incredible adventure that reveals the true essence of Rasta!" Dr. Dennis Forsythe author of "Rastafarians:The Healing of the Nations."
