Z889 - 88.9/95.1FM, WBZC www.soundsofthecaribbean.com - listen live Review: Clinton Fearon - Mi an' Mi Guitar (Kool Yu Foot) Released March 26, 2005 Close your eyes and journey back to a time gone by sitting in that old rockin' chair on the porch at Gramma's. Nothing but the birds chirpin', the buzz from a cricket and then a gentle man picks up his guitar, strums a few chords and begins to sing. A throwback to a time when music wasn't crammed through eighty different effects processors and no team of engineers spent hours twiddling with knobs. Just a man and his acoustic guitar, strummin' and singin' soulfully, simply, purely music from the heart, vocals from the sternum all flowing straight to your eardrum. No complicated arrangement, no twiddling or meddling. With the exception of Bless Your Heart and Stop the Hate, there aren't even any layered harmonies (though you'll surely appreciate the beautiful layers there it's hard to believe all those layers are Clinton's voice, but they are). It's just Mi an' Mi Guitar, just the basic elements, the birthplace of so many millions of musical creations a human being with a strong will to impart true feelings that strike common chords among us all, and make us smile and try even harder when we doubt. Let's move to the rhythm of life, and accept the things we cannot change. Let's groove to the rhythm of life, gotta have a little faith, the future shall be great, so just hold on!" So many times listening to the Gladiators' early albums or even with Boogie Brown, I've yearned to hear just Basie's voice, in isolation, to focus solely on his spirit. Well, now here it is. Clinton Fearon stripped down, raw, alone, just the facts. Music for life. ~Brendan DeMelle, www.DCReggae.com BOOGIE BROWN PRODUCTIONS 1412 S.W. 102nd #239 Seattle WA 98146 USA email: boogie@boogiebrown.com URL: www.boogiebrown.com [7] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From: Sister Yasmin (R.A.W. #) Subject: El Burrito Fiesta Press Release Date: Thu, 05 May 2005 20:50:27 -0700 From: Yasmin Solomon Press Release - For immediate release May 5, 2005 Contact: DJ Sister Yasmin 707-884-4703, sisteryasmin@hotmail.com FIESTA DE ANIVERSARIO AT EL BURRITO ORGANIC TAQUERIA IN POINT ARENA ON SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2005 - Memorial Day Weekend What: Fiesta De Aniversario - A Party to celebrate and thank the community for their support When: Saturday, May 28, 2005 - Memorial Day Weekend Where: El Burrito Organic Taqueria, 165 Main Street, downtown Point Arena, CA Time: 12PM - 10PM Details: An Anniversary Celebration with special food, drink and music to celebrate being in business in Point Arena and serving our community -- A Thank You Fiesta! I recently (April 23rd) attended Western Consciousness at the Llandilo Cultural Center just outside of Sav La Mar. The show started around 9:30 p.m. under a cris full moon which hung like a glowing orb over the colorfully designed stage. The line-up was first class. The show was extremely well produced and the music and vibe was pure righteousness up until the last act. The show motto 'Good Over Evil' prevailed for most of the night and Worrell King of 'King of Kings Promotions' went all out to provide an evening of reggae's finest entertainment. I felt incredibly blessed and nurtured by stalwarts such as Beres Hammond (who invited Jimmy Riley at one point to share the stage), Morgan Heritage (missing Una that evening but still powerful as ever), John Holt, Wayne Wonder (awesome), Bushman, Tarrus Riley (look out for this young and talented artist, son of Jimmy Riley), Abdel Wright (I would describe him much like Bob Dylan, Jamaican style), Marsha (a powerful female dub poet and school teacher), Zema (from LA gave a great and well appreciated performance), Turbulence and the wicked dj, Chezidek. The evening included Jah Mason, I Wayne, Turbulence and Fantan Mojah who closed and nearly brought down the show. It is imperative to focus on what was right with Western Consciousness because it was a magical musical experience. The show is located in a small neighborhood and offers a true rural Jamaican experience with few tourists and a comfortable setting. Parking is no problem and lots of interesting vendors line the outside of the gate. The artists were professional and gave great performances. Band changes and artist segues were smoothe and kept the vibe at a high. The last twenty minutes should have been only a small problem. Fantan Mojah arrived late from another engagement. Many of the young, conscious dj's artists were going to finish out the show. His time was running short and when he got on stage began to curse causing security to warn him by turning down the sound. This made him more angry and he continued to send out expletives and inciting anger in the crowd by stating his career was being sabotaged. At that point, there was some bottle throwing and eventually two gunshots rang out. As it turned out, the gunshots were fired into the ground and were a blessing, as it stopped the bottle throwing and the crowd disbursed quickly and orderly. Fantan came off the stage cursing more and more meeting up with his crew backstage and storming out. I stood right beside him. The show was immediately stopped. This twenty minutes was the only scar on Western Consciousness and it appeared to be the result of a tempermental young artist who had little discipline and as a result may cause serious damage to the reggae music industry overall. And that is why I am posting this report. After the show, the promoter, Worrell King, who was extremely concerned that such a beautiful night could end abruptly with an artist who could not control himself. Elyse Kelly on IRIE FM reported that one of the lessons young artists need to learn is that they have more control over an audience than they think, and therefore, it is their responsibility to behave professionally and to learn the lessons of self discipline and conduct that furthers the professionalism and future of reggae music. As Worrell told me a few nights later, the reggae industry is in a fragile state, much like an egg, and it doesn't take much to shatter what has taken decades to build. Each artist carries a responsibility to nurture and further the future of the music. A few days later, Red Stripe, a major supporter refused to pay the money owed to Worrell King. Although, Worrell in his professional and upful disposition, understands why this could happen, the rest of us should be asking if this reaction by Red Stripe and other major sponsors isn't throwing the baby out with the bath water? In my opinion, having covered shows such as Rebel Salute, Western Consciousness, and others, a promoter can not have 100% control over every artist. I know for a fact that Tony Rebel and Worrell King put alot of creative thinking into their line-ups and purposely try to create a show that has wide appeal but focuses on positivity. A few days ago I wrote Red Stripe as well as the Gleaner and Observer and stated if the problem is with the artist, take action against the artist and not the promoter unless they have demonstrated carelessness or neglect. The rich musical heritage of Jamaica should and must be preserved and supported by large companies who use their influence to promote a world wide knowledge of Jamaica talent. Weeks before, Red Stripe, Guinness and other sponsors stated a boycot of support with any show that features BeenieMan or Bounty Killa. That may make it difficult for some artists to be showcased on shows, but at least it does not tie the hands of the promoter. I also have to ask why are many of these same artists used in ads for billboards marketing their products? Does that make sense? I believe it is one thing to say in advance they (Red Stripe, Guinness, etc) will not sponsor shows that have certain artists in their line-ups, but to deny a promoter the money owed from a show that was well produced and portrayed magnificent integrity up until a twenty minute tantrum from a young upcoming artist, seems unethical to me. There are many issues brought up in this conundrum and all of us should take a few minutes to think through it all. We all play a part in the future of this music. Every person has the opportunity to play a part in the forward movement of reggae music. Bad behavior by artists is extremely damaging to the industry in current times. How can the supposedly 'conscious artist or dj' stand up and sing about love, unity, and Jah, dress like a priest and then act with carelessness and disregard? This will sooner or later ring with hypocracy of the worst kind and make a mockery not only of the music but Rastafari as well. Without the shows, there would be no place for artists to showcase their talent. Without the sponsors, there will be no shows. Artists need to manage themselves and not damage an industry that many foundation artists prepared for them through decades of sacrifice and hard work. We all should ask ourselves what can we contribute? I don't believe all of us who are writers, photographers, fans, and contributers to the music are using our resources and powers to maximize the potential and to put the right pressure, as well as appropriate feedback, to the critical sources. I would love to one day have an annual convention which included workshops where we study the challenges, review the opportunities and work more cohesively to bring this music to the fullness it deserves. What can we do right now? For those who feel like Red Stripe is making knee jerk decisions that might hurt the industry and the overall culture of Jamaica and it's rich musical heritage, please email me for the contact there to send a letter of support for conscious promoters. If you made it through this post, give thanks for your time and attention. As soon as I get back, I will have a plethora of photos from the show, as well, as beautiful scenes from rural Jamaica. My friend, Zema, has been working and recording with the Gladiators in Aberdeen and Kingston. I will soon write a report about what is going on with them. Al, Albert Griffith's son, is taking on the vocals of his father. I would be willing to bet that few can hear the difference. I am amazed at how much they sound alike. Even more, Al is a very conscious young man who is rooted in foundation philosophies much like his father.
