The duo, (Michigan and Smiley) recorded their number 1 hit "Rub A Dub Style" over the original master tape for Alton Ellis, "I'm Just A Guy", followed by the even more popular "Nice Up The Dance". Although Sir Dodd released hits in the dancehall style, the sessions proved to be his swan-song before relocating to New York. The duo were able to overcome this setback by recording at Tuff Gong Studio the classic "One Love Jamdown", produced by "Jahmet Enwright", which was released as a double a-side with Freddie McGregor's "Jogging". Michigan And Smiley gave a dynamic performances at the annual Reggae Sunsplash Festivals in 1980 through 1965, it was the unmatched performance in 1981 which led to a debut appearance in the UK where they topped the bill at the "Black Echoes Reggae Awards Show". In 1982 Henry "Junjo" Lawes" productions (Volcano)dominated the dancehall, introducing current DJs to a wider audience without attenuating the sound. Michigan And Smiley recorded a grim warning to prospective philanderers, "Diseases", and the song inspired Yellowman to record an identical version alongside his sparring partner, Fathead. IN 1982 Michigan and Smiley also recorded at Channel One the album Step By Step produced by "Joejoe"on the Hitbound lable. In 1983 Michigan and Smiley recorded another number one single from the album of the same name "Sugar Daddy" produced by "Dr Dread" for Ras Records. Throughout the 80s Michigan And Smiley sustained attention in the album album charts with the releases Step By Step, Sugar Daddy, Back In The Biz and Reality Must Rule Again. The duo enjoyed a revival in the 90s when some of their earlier hits resurfaced through VP in the USA. Presently Michigan and Smiley still get together for performances though they both are involve in their respective projects within the realms of the art. General Smiley has just finished recording his first solos album at the Kingston Studio in New York entitled ,O.G.S. The artists that remains on top of his career in such dynamic porportions and rightous lyrics known as SOULMEDIC... Soulmedic is an artist of majestic proportions; the variety of style and dynamics make Medics one of the most powerful new voices in Reggae music today. From roots to dancehall he wails with undeniable force delivering the message of Rastafari through clean living and upfullness. When asked in a recent interview how he writes his lyrics he answered, 'Purely the inspiration of the Most High compels I to manifest music, It is meditation with the powers of creation'. The very impressive "Rainbow Warrior" EP is Martin Jondo's first solo outing. Hammerbass, a quality label for new and fresh reggae music, has released Kanka's worthwhile "Don't Stop Dub" album. Mannaseh's "Dub Plate Style Volume 2" is a strong, focussed and intense album from an influential producer. Hallucinator/Chain Reaction's "Landlocked" is a powerful, atmospheric album. Matrix's album "Various Films" is one for all the bass heads into abstracted beats and early ONU Sound styles. "Maximum Rhythm & Reggae" is a ska/rocksteady/reggae flavored album well worth checking out. Los Granadians put out a nice skanking retro flavored album. RARE WHITE BISON BORN IN B.C. FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - A buffalo rancher near Fort St. John in northeastern B.C. is bracing for scores of visitors following the recent birth of a rare white calf. It's only been a few days since the birth was announced, but rancher Karen Blatz says people are already dropping by to take a look. And Blatz says she expects those numbers will grow as word gets out. "This is the first white calf that was born in Canada. I know there was a few in the States but not too many." When a white bison was born in Wisconsin in 1994, half a million people turned out to see it. Aboriginal legend holds that the white bison is a harbinger of peace and unity. And in that spirit, Blatz says she has named the male calf Spirit of Peace. "To them a white buffalo is a symbol of hope, rebirth or unity and also peace. And because he was born north of Peace River, we thought Peace would be a good name." Blatz says the calf was born prematurely a month ago. But she says she wanted to see if it would live before making the announcement. The calf is being fed from a bottle, and Blatz says that may have to continue for several more months. She says he was only nine kilograms at birth, half of a newborn bison calf's typical weight. She says the bison won't suffer the same fate as the others on her ranch. "This guy is a little different. He won't be going into bison burgers." Blatz said the calf will remain under her care for several more months, but she is considering selling him. "It could be to the native Americans, or even if a circus or a zoo wants something rare to put in there; to draw the crowds. That would be good too, but he definitely needs more exposure than where we live." The U.S.-based National Bison Association says white calves like this one are born once every three to five years.
