But the last book by Rita Marley No Woman No Cry (my life with Bob Marley), is a deeply affective, loving, and multi dimensional account of her life with the Reggae superstar. In it we find half the story thats never been told. Yes, Robbie was a saint but he was also made of flesh  thus human, and there lies the rub  we are introduced to a fallible prophet. A man as vexed by his circumstances as he was happy to breathe fresh air. A man who wrote the dark and depressive Concrete Jungle but he also wrote the impossibly positive I Can See Clearly Now. Marley wrote One Love, but he also wrote Burnin and Lootin. The book finds her following Nesta from one end of the earth (in abject poverty) to the other end (touring stadiums throughout the globe). It is inevitable that a woman sees the backside of the bluster, the underbelly of poverty, the anguished face of her husbands privation, the humiliation of wild affairs, and at times intensely personal (but too personal for us, the emotionally handicapped) misgivings. One comes away with a greater understanding and appreciation for the King of Reggae as a human being, a personable father in every sense of the word including his insecurities, an organic farmer, etc the real heroes behind their remarkable lives are duly appreciated; the ones who supported and nurtured their muse: her aunt, relatives, friends and business network. You are what you are. You are black and you are Beautiful But fate that is random can also be cruel. Theres a pervasive sense that the lack of respect shes experienced is because of her blackness. The first cut came from no less than her mother, to the trials of a black woman living in an impoverished country beset by a colonial mentality, systemic corruption, broadside resentment, wanton violence and suffocating oppression. So the reader finds her wasting time repudiating salacious rumors. But we are treated to revealing insights as to the origins of certain songs that are staples of our musical diet. No wonder No Woman No Cry is such a great song. This Saturday, September 3, I will conduct an interview with Roslyn Ellison, co-founder of the Trench Town Reading Centre, on "Positive Vibrations." "Positive Vibrations" (co-hosted with Professor Skank) airs from 8-10 p.m. every Saturday night on KDHX 88.1 FM. The interview will happen at 9 p.m. central time. TRC was established in 1993 and I know it has had the support of a number of RAW members.
