JAHMARK & the SS @ the BELLY-UP Before we go into what's shakin' for September '05 let me take this opportunity to say that the show on Saturday, August 27th at the Belly-Up Tavern with our brethren, Don Carlos, was a huge success! We played to a sold-out audience and our music was well appreciated and our energetic presentation of it "nuff respected"...needless to say the "Don" tear up the show and the audience went home fully satiated, "shaken" and satisfied!... ...The ever so entertaining, Jafada, was the MC of the night, while DJ Carlos Culture provided the sweet reggae grooves in between sets. I ran into sister Makeda of San Diego's 91.1 XTRA FM "Reggae Makosa" radio program. She was diligently filming interviews for her online video program and it was a pleasure to see her again... ...Also present (among others) to show his support was the honorable Garth "Garty" Dennis of the original Wailing Souls. Don Carlos brought him up on stage in the middle of his set just to remind the audience of who some of the original "pioneers" of reggae music are...'nuff respect!!!... ...We gained many new fans at this event some of who are already e-mailing us as to when our next performance will be. For the first two weeks in September, Jahmark will be in Jamaica for a little "R & R" (yeah, right...ha-ha ;0)... ...I have been so busy over here in Southern California for the past twelve years just trying to make ends meet that I have not had the opportunity to go HOME in over twelve years. You'd best better believe that while I am in Jamaica I'll be using every opportunity to re-connect with the reggae business community as far as radio airplay, CD distribution, concert performances and touring, etc. Anyone out there in "cyber-land" who know the right people to connect with while I'm there, please FORWARD THE INFO!... ...Last year my favorite aunt Gloria at seventy years old passed away from leukemia, she always managed to maintain such a joyful countenance no matter how the deck was stacked against her in life. Seeing this trait in myself also I figure that this is one of the reasons I so closely identified with her...JAH bless and protect her soul!!! No doubt I'll spend the rest of the time visiting with my cousins and catching up on t'ings... ...For those of you who wish to see Jahmark & the Soulshakers perform when I return from Jamaica be sure to visit us at BADA's in Thousand Oaks. We'll be performing there on Friday, September 16th as well as the 23rd. Their phone # is (805)557-0527...other than that, for more info be sure to visit our website at { jahmark dot com }...no matter what my people, remember this, in times of trouble it is always better to maintain a JOYFUL COUNTENANCE than to "mumble, moan and groan" for there is none that I know of who wants to be around someone who moans and groans about every little thing, life is too short my brothers and sisters...LIVE UP!!! 2. WHO's JAHMARK & the SOULSHAKERS? For those of you who have had the opportunity of experiencing a Jahmark & the Soulshakers performance I need not say any more as I am sure that your souls were thoroughly and positively SHAKEN for the good! However, for those of you who have not had this opportunity allow me to take this little time to introduce ourselves to you... ......HISTORY:- Before Jahmark & the Soulshakers was ever conceived of Jahmark (along with Emanuel Walsh and Patrick "Big Dread" Ross) was one of the founding members of the Redemption Posse. They took the honors for Best Songwriter and Best Performer in the 1986 Jamaica Festival Song Competition competing against such icons as Stanley & the Turbines, the Jamaicans, Faith D'Aguilar and Tinga Stewart to name a few. That same year they backed up the then up and coming DJ Tiger on his first major public outing at the Jamaica Sunsplash Beach Party... ...In 1987 they were approached by a Japanese promoter, Katsuya Abe, about performing in Japan after he had seen them at S.O.B.'s in Manhattan performing with Leroy Sibbles of the mighty Heptones. They were in Japan for six months and after their contract was up half of the band returned to New York while the rest stayed in Tokyo. In 1988 Jahmark & the Soulshakers was born at first consisting of all Japanese musicians. In 1989 they had recorded a song entitled UNITY at CBS Sony Studio in Tokyo along with Sly & Robbie and Tyrone Downie of the Wailers for a compilation CD of the same name. This was followed by another compilation CD entitled JUS' PASSIN' THRU, and later came their full length debut CD tribute to Nelson Mandela simply entitled VIVA MANDELA... ...In 1991 Jahmark relocated to Los Angeles where he re-shaped the Soulshakers band and performed at such venues as the San Diego Street Scene, Oxnard Reggae Jam on the Coast, Hemet Reggae Fest, and on and on. They played alongside such artists as the Wailers, Third World, Pato Banton, Wailing Souls, the Skatalites, Eek- a-Mouse, Jimmy Cliff, Andrew Tosh, Lucky Dube, etc. oftentimes stealing the show so to speak (smile). Jahmark has appeared on two compilation CDs since in L.A., THUMP'N REGGAE JAMZ and REGGAE WORSHIP vol II. By 1994 Jahmark's songs OCEAN BLUE (co-written with Peter Wolf who also wrote WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLL) and I WANNA ROCK U BABY were chosen for the movie soundtracks WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S II and MIAMI RHAPSODY respectively... ...1997 saw the release of Jahmark & the Soulshakers' U.S. debut full length CD release LOVE POWER. In 2003 they followed up with another smash hit CD entitled LIFE! In 2004 their song LOVE POWER was chosen to be in the soundtrack of the Canadian indie film, RASTAFARIAN DREAMS. 2005 finds Jahmark & the Soulshakers in the studio working on their third U.S. release, MISCONCEPTION... ......CD RELEASES:- UNITY (compilation 1989), VIVA MANDELA (1990), JUS' PASSIN' THRU (compilation 1990), THUMP'N REGGAE JAMZ (compilation 1994), REGGAE WORSHIP vol. II (compilation 1995), LOVE POWER (1997), LIFE! (2003)... ......SOUND:- Jahmark & Soulshakers sound has evolved into a very cutting edge, innovative, new millennium form of up-tempo roots rock reggae with a healthy balance of laid back cuts for a nostalgic roots lover. Definitely fresh and original, definitely timeless music, definitely SOULSHAKIN'!!!... ......VENUE HIGHLIGHTS:- Festival Competition, Jamaica Sunsplash, the Song of Lion concert in Tokyo with Sly & Robbie, Marcia Griffiths, Edi Fitzroy, etc., S.O.B.s with Leroy Sibbles in Manhattan, San Diego Street Scene with Lucky Dube, Hemet Reggae Fest with Wailing Souls and Eek-a-Mouse, Oxnard Reggae Jam on the Coast with Third World, the Wailers, the Skatalites, etc., Smokeout Festival Promo Party at the Key Club with Andrew Tosh (hosted by Cypress Hill), Ventura Concert Theatre with Jimmy Cliff and Pato Banton, etc... ......PRESS REVIEWS:-Jahmark has had rave reviews in the Jamaica STAR, Miami's REGGAE REPORT, L.A.s the BEAT, the REGGAE NUCLEUS, the HEMET NEWS, Japan's REGGAE MAGAZINE (RM), the L.A. WEEKLY, California State University's Northridge the Daily Sundial...please refer to Jahmark's website at { jahmark dot com } for additional information. ......BAND MEMBERS:-Without the Soulshakers there would be no Jahmark & the Soulshakers. The Soulshakers are: DAVID KING on Bass Guitar, CASEY JONES on Drums, CEDRIC BRAVO on Saxophone, RUDY RICHARDSON on Keyboards, and MARK TYSON on Lead Guitar..."Here come the Soulshakers we're gonna shake some souls today"!!! 3. OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE As I am writing this article from Negril Jamaica as we speak, this topic seems most appropriate... It has come to my attention that there are many reggae musicians all over the world today playing reggae music and yet know almost nothing really about the people and culture of this little island in the Caribbean that brought about this mystical percolation of rhythms, melodies and beats known around the world as REGGAE MUSIC! Every country has it's own national motto. For example, just to name a few, here in the U.S. there is, "In God We Trust", in Great Britain there is, "God Save The Queen", while in the little island of Jamaica we have, "Out of Many One People". Now exactly what this means is that out of a variety of peoples from other lands the modern day "Jamaican" was born... Jamaica was originally inhabited by the peace loving Arawaks (known in other parts of the Carribean as the Taino) who crossed from Central and South America in order to escape the wrath of more hostile neighbors, the Caribs, who practiced cannibalism (similar to Theodore Bundy and Hannibal Lechter)... Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1494 and claimed "Xaymaca" (the orinigal Arawak name of Jamaica which meant "the land of wood and water") for Spain. Through ignorance Columbus called the Arawaks "indians" for he erroneously thought that he had arrived on the sub-continent of India. Hence the reason for all native Americans (whether from North America, Central or South America, or the Carribbean) being called "indians" by Euro-influenced "teachings"... Unfortunately the Arawaks suffered a similar fate to their relatives on the other Caribbean islands: they were enslaved or died from illness caught from the Spaniards. To replace their labor supply, the Spanish terrorists (a.k.a. The Conquistadors) brought in slaves captured from Africa. For obvious reasons therefore Rastafarians do not celebrate Columbus Day... In 1655 the British took over the island. Henry Morgan, a pirate buccaneer, became Lieutenant Governer of Jamaica in 1674. Rivalry in the Caribbean continued between Great Britain, France and Spain among others which contributed toward hundreds of thousands of Africans being literally stolen away from Africa and sold into Colonialist slavery... At that time, Henry Morgan openly flew the "Skull & Bones" flag made infamous by the pirates who lurked in the land and the waters of the Caribbean seeking bounty. My question to all is, WHY in heaven's name is our illustrious president, George W., a member of the secret society known as the "Skull & Bones"? and is it "secret" because maybe, just maybe, it's no longer fashionable in today's undercover world to openly be a pirate ;0)... The English often employed Scotsmen and Irishmen to be the overseers on their plantations as they considered the Scots to be inferior and the Irish to be one step away from being animals themselves. If the English felt this way about their neighbors at the time, imagine how they felt toward the native people of the Americas, much less the Africans who they were importing to the Americas and the Caribbean as their slaves. Because the overseers of the plantations were Scotsmen and Irishmen, we find that the majority of the slaves learned to speak English with a distant hint of a Scottish or Irish accent. Combine that with the distinct African rhythm of speech and we get a hybrid form of English known to Jamaicans as "Patois"... Over the years Jamaica's slaves rebelled time after time. In 1760 a rebellion was led by Tacky, an African chief who had been enslaved. There was another major rebellion in 1831 led by Sam Sharpe, one of Jamaica's national heroes. The Emancipation Act ended slavery in 1834-however, the slaves did not gain complete freedom until four years later (1838). As a result of this emancipation the sugar plantations became neglected... The increased demand for labor initiated the advent of new immigrants: the contract workers, otherwise known as indentured servants, who worked for barely little or nothing. In the 19th century, about 33,000 Indians (the real ones this time - from India) and 5,000 Chinese came to Jamaica. A further rebellion in 1865 known as the Morant Bay Rebellion and led by Paul Bogle (another of Jamaica's national heroes) led to Britain making Jamaica a full crown colony... Eventually the Marano Jews from Spain and Portugual, as well as the Matars from Lebanon entered the island as merchants. The Matars were Christians from Lebanon who lived close to the borders of what is now Israel. Jamaica gained it's independence from Great Britain on August 6th, 1962 thus becoming a member of the so-called British Commonwealth. Many Jamaicans sought work in Canada, Britain and the U.S.A... Jaimaica's first Prime Minister was Sir Alexander Bustamante who was succeeded by Donald Sangster who served for only a few months due to illness, then by Hugh Shearer in 1967, and Michael Manley in 1972. The next Prime Minister was Edward Seaga and finally in 1992 P.J. Patterson became Jamaica's Prime Minister and remains so to this day... By this little journey we can see how the Jamaican government arrived at our national motto "Out of Many One People". Around the time Jamaica gained it's independence from Great Britain we could say that about 80% of the island's population was comprised of Africans and African descendants while the other 20% was comprised of East Indians, Chinese, Marano Jews, Lebanese, and Europeans, etc. and the various mixtures and blends of all these peoples... Today that percentage can be stated to be around 95% African and 5% combination of all the other influences. Due to the fact that our teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc. are for the most part of African descent all of the people of the island are touched by a certain amount of "Africaness" and for that reason mainland Africans often refer to Jamaica affectionately as "little Africa"...for out of many we are truly ONE!!! 5. RACIAL and RELIGIOUS PROFILING What can I say about PROFILING? If history is any indication we could say with unflinching accuracy that the TERRORISTS OF YESTERDAY (including the Roman Empire, the Crusaders, Conquistadors, the Colonialists, etc.) are the "heroes" of today (i.e. Euro-Christian capitalists)... Now does this mean that the so-called "terrorists" of today (i.e. Arab Muslims) will ultimately become the heroes of tomorrow? Who knows? Could today's Arab Muslim peoples be merely just enthusiastically imitating and emulating the Euro-Christian terrorists of yesterday? Could this be where they learned that the more people you terrorize is the more of a chance you stand to end up as the seemingly ultimate and all-powerful "hero"... Terrorism in any form is definitely and unequivocally WRONG! Skin color does not make terrorism right for a lighter-skinned terrorist, while making it wrong for a darker-skinned terrorist...A TERRORIST IS A TERRORIST no matter how you slice it. However, as a wise man once also said, "what seems like one man's terrorist could very well be just another man's freedom fighter"... It has come to my attention recently that there has been a tremendous amount of ISLAM-MUSLIM-ARAB BASHING going on in both the natural world (here on earth) as well as the cyber-world (on the internet). As a matter of fact there is someone (or ones) sending around e-mails as we speak trying to garner votes from people to say YES to the U.S. government's new proposed plan to institute PROFILING as a documented part of U.S. law. Without any apology I've got to say NO!... Not only is this a huge mistake but it is also a vain and vile act against the majestic kingdom of the Living God of which I 'n I (we) are all a part of even as ONE PEOPLE!... This proposed "law" is supposedly aimed at "terrorists" whom today in the eyes of the "western-world" happen to be Muslim oriented Arabs (even as how the "Communists" were the supposed enemies of a time what seems to be not so long ago)... Unfortunately, a man from Brazil was murdered by British police recently because they mistakenly thought that he fit the "PROFILE of a TERRORIST". No amount of sorries and apologies nor even the ever popular pay-off by the British government could satisfy or mend the broken heart of this innocent man's mother... I have many friends from all over the world who have absolutely nothing to do with being Muslim, nor being Arab, much less with being a terrorist and that's not to say that there is anything wrong with either being an Arab or a Muslim in any way... What I'm trying to say is just like the atrocity of what happened to that Brazilian man in London so it is that I have many friends from Hindu worshipping India, from Christian worshipping Central and South America and the Caribbean, friends from Ethiopia and other parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, even middle-eastern friends who have absolutely nothing to do with terrorism, and yet all of these innocent people could very well wrongfully end up in the system's newly proposed PROFILING NET just because of their physical appearance... I have many friends of the Euro-Christian persuasion as well (what can I say, I'm a likeable kind of individual ;0) and somehow I don't believe that they will be affected by this newly proposed law if and when it does come into effect. What I'm about to say is not meant to offend anyone but what has been hidden in the darkness must come out to light someday and better sooner than later... How much longer do we, the citizens of the world, have to tolerate this double standard?! The media has succeeded in firing up the masses to a point of frenzy where all some can see before their eyes when they wake up in the morning are the words KILL THE TERRORISTS! Somehow this has been automatically translated by our brains to mean people of Arab or Muslim extraction... What about Timothy McVeigh? What about Eric Rudolph? What about that American kid that they found fighting with the Taliban against American troops? I am sure there are many more like him who they have not told us about... Why aren't these individuals and others like them labeled as "terrorists"? When it comes to lighter skinned people the western media seems to conveniently make up excuses. For example, "they were crazy" or "they were brain-washed" or "they had a terrible family background" and on and on, but never straight out THEY ARE TERRORISTS!... It is very much high time that all this hypocritical double-standard comes to an end if we are to truly progress in this new millennium as the truly united family of MANKIND (not "mean-men") that we supposedly are... It is so sad to see black people today wrongfully siding together with the delusional segment of the population at large against their newly invented whipping-post, the "sand-n****r" (their phrasing not mine), when not even two to three generations ago we were in exactly the same position that the Arab peoples are in today in the eyes of our white brothers... For our black brothers and sisters who are guilty of this mis-behavior all I can say is two things: 1) shame on you, and 2) how soon do we forget? Personally after attending college in northern Florida I know what it is to be called the "N" word regardless of the fact that I'm light skinned. It was not a nice feeling then and I'm sure it would not be a nice feeling today. Although I have forgiven I have not forgotten and because of those days I am a much stronger person today. It is very important that black people learn to forgive our white brothers for the TIME OF THE PLANTATIONS but we should never forget. Our Jewish brothers have certainly not forgotten the Holocaust and receive billions if not trillions of dollars from the U.S. Treasury because of not forgetting, while Bono (of U2) has to beg for money to help our AIDS stricken brothers and sisters in Africa, respect Bono!... That is the only true and just way for the overprivileged peoples of the world to honestly and compassionately help to remedy the plight of the underprivileged peoples of the world; for where there are underprivileged people there has got to be overprivileged people, and if the overprivileged are looking for a positive role model to emulate I would start with Bono and not someone with a regressive George Custer-like mentality (not to call any names ;0)... Once again let me say to all peoples of the world that our fight is not against flesh and blood, nor against each other, but rather against spiritual wickedness which is brought about by the devil's rebellion against the Living God... Unfortunately the devil uses weak-minded, greedy, cold-hearted, and easily overcome by materialism kind of people to carry out his evil plans. This is extremely evident throughout history. In the eyes of man these ruthless "conquerors" of flesh and blood seem like the strongest in the land, but in the EYES OF GOD they were and still are the weakest in all the land for they were and still are the easiest to be persuaded and overcome by the devil into performing acts of spiritual wickedness against their fellow man... Throughout my life I have come to know that it is God-Consciousness which truly unites us while it is "religions" that divide us. Having said that, let me reiterate that I have many great friends throughout the world (including the U.S.) and what truly binds us together is first and foremost our love of God and his glorious creation, and our great love of one another as being a part of our Creator's glorious creation. Let us truly learn to love one another and not fall for the con of "divide and conquer" through the ignorance of profiling...ONE LOVE TO ALL!!!... Right now I am asking everyone to lift up their hands and hearts and ask God to bless not only America but the entire world, for the innocent children all over the world have suffered more than enough. CLOSING STATEMENT:- From myself and the members of the Soulshakers family I would like to extend our extreme condolences to all the families who lost loved ones as well as to those who just completely and utterly LOST-OUT to hurricane Katrina in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi... Let us lift up our hands and hearts in prayer for them even as we still do for the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia, as well as for all the sufferers all over the world!!! Remember my brothers and sisters, when you think you have problems somewhere in the world and maybe not even too far away from you, that some people REALLY HAVE PROBLEMS!!! In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Hola Spirit JAH Rastafari!!! For Immediate Release: Independent Distribution Collective Presents The Round-Robin Roadshow Tour 2005 Independent Distribution Collective (IDC) presents the Round-Robin Roadshow 2005 featuring the acoustic sounds from San Francisco Bay Area singer-songwriters, Karney, Shelley Doty and Matt Vrba. These veteran touring musicians will be appearing at major venues from San Francisco, CA to Seattle, WA, playing their signature tunes along with special guests along the way like Brad Wolfe, Dave Brown and a few surprise guests. Mixing up the usual singer-songwriter format, R3 will feature each special guest of the evening playing a full-set of original tunes followed by the Round-Robin a showcase of each of the musicians playing selected songs from their newest material. Karney maintains her tradition of not shying away from harsh politic truths but doing so with humility, humor and the accompaniment of stellar sonic creations on the instrumental portion of her original compositions. Collaboration is essential to Karney's recordings; before she released her first solo recordings she worked with artists such as Linda Perry of 4 Non-Blonds, George Clinton, Almo Recording artists Angel Corpus Christi, and Eric McFadden as well as San Francisco bands and cabaret singers including Mother Lode, Crocodile Tears, Musty Chiffon, Alcohol Of Fame, Elvis Herselvis, Patsy Cline and the Memphis G-Spots and many more. Labeled "a future legend" by one reviewer and a "guitar goddess" by another, Shelley Doty is considered one the best independent performers in the business. Watching her perform is awe-inspiring due to her masterful guitar licks, soulful voice and charismatic stage presence. As a songwriter, she creates articulate songs for today by sprinkling them with respect for the music of her youth (rock, R&B, jazz, funk). Shelley sings with passion and plays with an authentic raw energy that cuts through the air with jubilant imagination and freshness. Since the release of his album, the name Matt Vrba has been on the tip of everyone's tongue in the Bay Area. This engaging and energetic performer has been winning over audiences across the nation as he plays out relentlessly, winning fans over one by one. While he has been compared to artists like Jack Johnson, and Ryan Adams, Vrba definitely posses a style all his own. Solo, or with his all-star band, he has left audiences everywhere wanting more.
