I'll be in Washington DC next weekend for the national rally on Darfur on Sunday, April 30 and need suggestions about the local reggae. Is anyone privy to info leading me to an event on Friday the 28th or Saturday the 29th? Last time I was in DC I had fabulous Ethiopian food at Fasika's on 18th Street, and right after dinner I found a record shop with mostly Ethiopian music. An ital experience and I'd like more of the same, but if anyone wants to shout out on behalf of a Jamaican place they like, I'll take note. On a much more serious note: It was reported today on BBC news that Darfur is now "too deadly for aid work" -- which can have only disastrous possibilities for refugees and other civilians -- and the Sudan government has lately denied entry visas to the UN's military assessment team. (_news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4926234.stm_ (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4926234.stm) ) I was heartened that despite the customary diplomatic dithering over whether something is technically "genocide," the Bush administration led the way among nations in acknowledging that what has taken place and is unfolding in Darfur is in fact genocide. Not "acts of genocide," which in some shitty little semantic sense releases governments from feeling obligated or being legally compelled to DO something. No, this is genocide. Happening right now. What I wish is that at the highest levels of the U.S. administration this would compel even more vigorous efforts to quell the violence, which has killed at least 400,000 people and displaced some two million more. If we're in the business of identifying an axis of evil, let's put Sudan's government and their jangaweed proxies front and center of our focus. Without more voices from the grassroots our political class won't move further.
