This time was a little different as I attended two concerts back to back. Watsui Concert Sunday April 23, 2006 - 8.0 Club - Ft. Worth Texas Sunday night I was invited to Fort Worth TX, 8.0 Club/Sundance Square to hear Watusi perform. It was never a doubt in my mind that I would thoroughly enjoy a performance by this Texas based Reggae band. Aside from the wonderful Reggae Show, I enjoyed watching Jimi Watusi and Band members mingle with the crowd, giving them that old Reggae personal touch, meeting and greeting their fans. It amazed me that some of the fans traveled quite a long distance to catch their show. Of course hearing this from the fans delighted me as how an Artist treats his fans can make or break my impression of them. The message in the music has to fit and with Watusi it most definitely fit (shoe perfect). It always makes my heart happy to see a happy people with happy music. The Reggae theme has always been that of "One Love". Watusi went through several songs, covering most of Bob Marley classics. My favorite song of the night was their rendition of Aswad's "I need your love, for more than just an hour." I was really surprised when they started that melody, and thoroughly enjoyed the flavoring. Hmmmm!!! I wonder if Watusi was seeding the Queen (smile), anyone who knows me, knows I melt to Aswad's song and they were more than perfect in their rendition. Thank you Jimi Watusi and Band, it was an evening well spent. Check Watusi out at www.tropikalproductions.com Burning Spear Concert: Monday April 24, 2006 - Granada Theatre - Dallas, Texas Monday night I was invited to attend Burning Spears show at the Granada Theatre in Lower Greenville, Dallas. I attended the show along with several KNON 89.3 Irie FM Reggae DJ Crew members: Ras Ridi, Jah Larry, Empress Kenjah and her Princess Mosiah, Queen Amy, Ima Uwagbai, and Bro.You. Mike D Magician was unable to attend as his show Caribbean Dance Party airs Monday nights. DJ Everton and DJ Alex C was unable to attend as they had prior commitments. The show was MC'd by KNON 89.3 FM National Programming Director, Tunde Obazee with wife Kelli. In all honesty, I've never attended a Burning Spear concert; well let me backtrack my thoughts here; I actually did attend a Burning Spear concert in Jamaica, many years a go when I was a teen. The show included my favorite artist Dennis Brown - so my attention really was on him. (smile). In true essence this would be my first show and not knowing what to expect, I really had to approach the show with an open mindset. I have heard of Burning Spear, however, I don't possess any of his music in my personal collection. Since, there is so much adulation out there in regards to this legendary Reggae Artist; I had to see for myself what it was all about. My first surprise was the Audience grouping, mostly male, majority being Rasta, which made it very difficult to measure the response. Rasta's are known to always jump and move to the music. In general men don't show much visual emotional exuberance, even so; by all accounts it appears as if they were really enjoying Burning Spear's performance, so it was evident that he satisfied their souls. The backing band by the way was on top, Burning Spear's band has to be one of the best out there also impressive was the 200 to 300 people in attendance, this in itself was a conquer for a Monday night Texas show. Reggae on a weekday doesn't command such a audience, never weeknight in conservative Dallas Texas. I have to say though that reviewing this show is the hardest thing to date that I've had to do. I don't feel like I know enough about the Artist. I tried many avenues to feel his vibe, even to go so far as to Chat up the Rasta who mans his merchandise counter, we spoke for quite a while, but not enough that I could vibe his employer Burning Spear, our conversation changed from the subject rather quickly when we found we had a Jamaican commonality and are acquainted with many of the same Reggae Artists such as Mikey Dread. I did learn though that he had been with Burning Spear for over 20 years and that Spear will be performing in the UK around the time our camp DATC - Dread at the Controls will be performing there. Unfortunately the conversation did little to quench my thirst of my longing to vibe this man I hear so much about from the seasoned Reggae DJ's - Burning Spear. I'm not one to just throw up my hands and give up, I need to know why I'm not getting it? Yes, my glass is half empty and needs a refill! (smile) My last ditch attempt was to enjoy the music and vibe on what the Guitarist and Drummer was putting out. Those two guys are silky smooth! So, I figured I would just enjoy the sounds and at the conclusion of the concert, I would be able to observe Burning Spear interactions with some of the fans then I would most definitely get it; unfortunately, I must have been really dreaming as that did not happen, as soon as the show was over he left the stage and apparently left the building. So, there was no autograph signing or picture taking with the fans. That was disappointing to me. I guess I am a tad bit spoiled, by the Mikey Dread's, the Luciano's, the Mackie Conscious's, the Inner Vision's, the Glen Washington's, the Tinga Stewart's, the Freddie Macgregor's, the P'ta mon's, the Sanchez's, the Gregory Isaac's, the Chaka Demus and Plier's, the Yabba's and even Andrew Tosh's of the world- where fan happiness is always the top of their list and they show it by giving back something personal. But still, it is how we all in the entertainment arena survive - Pure FAN SUPPORT! Reggae Fans Worldwide - give yourselves a BIG UP!! We would not exist without you. Whether you are shopping retail, wholesale, or just want to download your favorite songs, GospelReggae.com is your destination for "Strictly Positive Music. Here are the details: ARTIST: Mr. Danny ALBUM: Divine Label: Flow Masters Records Co st: Only $13.95! [221_t.jpg] In late 2005, Sherwin Gardner gave us "Turn it Up Volume 1", and introduced the rest of the world to his new stable of artists. In the few months since the release of this best selling compilation, one name has managed to rise head and shoulders above the rest of the Flow Masters crew. Perhaps it is because his authentic tone reminds us of popular artists like Yami Bolo, Junior Reid, I Wayne or Jah Cure. However, I think that the real reason why Mr. Danny is currently riding a huge wave of popularity is because of his memorable melodies, heartfelt lyrics, genuine spirit and Sherwin Gardner's production expertise. While this stand-out album contains mostly conscious roots reggae in a similar vein to the previously released "Divine" and "Dust Them Away", Danny also dabbles in a little raggamuffin hip hop ("Addicted" featuring Chri s Mark) and dancehall ("One Day" featuring Sherwin Gardner). This project contains some major boom-shots like the contagious "On My Way", "More of You" "I Know" and the slammin' urban remix of "Divine". Unlike so many albums that have recently come from Trinidad, this record isn't about hype. The strength in "Divine" is found in it's laid back vibe. This is mellow roots reggae on an urban tip. Mark my words: "Divine" will be one of GospelReggae's bestsellers for 2006 and beyond. Find out what all-the-buzz is about and pick up your copy today.   BUY NOW: http://www.gospelreggae.com ARTIST: Mention ALBUM: Hear My P rayer Label: Flow Masters/Servant's Quarters Cost: Only $13.95! [222_t.jpg] Late last year, gospel reggae producer Mark Giles (Jah Servant), moved his studio from the Great White North (Canada) to the sunny southern Caribbean (Trinidad). The first fruit of this relocation is the debut release by Mention. Production for the project was shared between Mark Gile's Servant's Quarters studio and Sherwin Gardner's House of Flows studio. Using both sequencing and live instrumentation (including some blazing electric guitar licks by Jah Servant), this energetic album is a spirited first offering from a relatively new artist. We first felt Mention's "Fire" on Trinity Mix 2001 (Lion of Judah Sounds). A lot has happened since then and Mention has developed significantly as an artist/songwriter. Though his name may sound familiar, it is not to be confused with the song "Mr. Mention" on Yow 3 or the early Buju Banton recording with the same name. For this Trinidadian artist that is known as Mention is far more than a mere dancehall deejay. He also lends his hand at some singing on songs like the title track, "Hear My Prayer" in addition to his deejay/singjay flow. The songwriting is solid, the hooks are catchy and the accompaniment is up to par with the best that has come out of Trinidad over the last year. While singing may not be Mention's strongest suit, his deejay skills more than compensate. For when he is toasting, Mention controls the microphone. On songs like the authoritative "No Fear" and the energetic ragga soca "Love Is Ah Flag", we find Mention putting his best foot forward. On "Praise Till Ah Morning" Sherwin Gardner even jumps in front of the microphone for yet another brilliant collaboration. Overall, Mention's "Hear My Prayer" contains 16 passionately delivered tracks performed by a genuine believer that has a tremendous heart for reaching the lost. It is the positive beginning of a hopefully long and fruitful relationship between two top gospel reggae producers (Giles and Gardner) and a valiant freshman effort for Mention.
