[6] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From: Leigh Crutchfield (R.A.W. # 388) Subject: ROTR 2006 -A New Beginning! Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2006 21:06:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Irieview Productions I have just returned once again from the 23rd Annual Reggae On The River, my 18th year in a row. This year's festival had some big changes, some good and some not so good, in my estimation. First off, the event was held on a brand new site this year on the Dimmick Ranch, right across the river from the previous one, French's Camp. The new place is much bigger, and it is a longer walk than before from the gate down into the concert bowl and there's a much steeper and longer hill to traverse. Unfortunately, I have developed a badly arthritic knee within the last several months, and such a climb up and down was definitely not welcome. Some wonderful crew members saw me with my cane and managed by being persistent after first being rebuffed on the radio to get me unofficially shuttled back and forth several times by golf cart, white van and even psychedelic biodiesel bus ( now that was FUN!). But, I was told that officially there were no real plans for "alter abled" shuttling in place, it was whatever they were able to rustle up.This definitely needs to be addressed for future shows. I also talked to several different families with young children that were not very happy at all with the long walk and steep hill after a long day at the show. Hopefully, maybe a better, easier and shorter route may someday be found. So, if one has mobility or health issues, for now it might be a better idea to camp somewhere onsite instead of coming in from somewhere else on the shuttle. I heard mixed reviews from various people regarding their opinions about the new site. For the most part I liked the new concert bowl it because it is larger, and there is more space for people to move about and not feel crowded. Sometimes it was more difficult to locate various booths, and sometimes the staff gave me completely incorrect directions to various locations, but I noticed that the layout was kept somewhat similar to the previous one, and that helped a lot. I arrived fairly easily by shuttle at dusk on Friday evening, after stopping at my offsite campground to pitch my tent. Gyptian was onstage crooning the new tunes on his upcoming debut CD "My Name Is Gyptian" on VP Records due in stores Sept. 12th. His song "Serious Times" hit the top of the local and international charts and was declared Jamaica's Most Important Song of 2005. Baby Cham was next with his polished dancehall stylee singing his new tune "Ghetto Story" from his new release of the same name that is coming out Aug. 15th. Unfortunately, I was highly distracted from concentrating specifically on his music during the performance by his excessive habit of grabbing the crotch of his pants. I left just before Sean Paul's performance, and from what I've heard from many different people, I'm glad that I did so. Allegedly, S.P. made some remarks during his set that were offensive to most, and I was also told that his sound quality and overall performance were not that fantastic, either. Why did I leave that early? To make sure to be on the shuttle in a timely manner before it stopped running for the early morning. And unfortunately on Friday night, the shuttle service was an agonizing experience of totally disorganized chaos that I never want to see repeated. Someone had neglected to set the stop up in the same orderly manner as in previous years, and there were no lines designated or destination signs posted, and both the crowd and staff were completely confused and frustrated as to how to proceed, with concert attendees standing around in a huge group wondering what was going on and when they were going to get to leave. After about an hour and a half, I managed to get on a bus to the parking lot, first after being told to walk back and forth aimlessly between the bus and the stop. Saturday morning I again caught the shuttle at the Benbow lot and was obligated to take a ride into Garberville first to pick up more passengers before we arrived at the Dimmick Ranch. Local artist Ishi Dube was onstage when I got there, being backed by the Massagana Band. Next came sistah and brothah Luna and Moese Angel. These talented siblings are excellent vocalists, as well as songwriters and technical engineers. Luna has composed songs for Moese's upcoming CD, and Moese has helped engineer hers, truly keeping it all in the family. They recently came back from performing in Libya, being the first US band at all to perform in that country in thirty years! Kudos! Next was L.A. wonder Elan. This smooth voiced attractive young man was once the lead singer for the Wailers between 1996 and 1999, after meeting Al Anderson at a club one night. His music has been included in the film "50 First Dates" and the TV show "Sex & The City." Presently the massive were up on their feet and really moving to the high energy performance of Kenyan band Gidi Gidi Maji Maji. This amazing duo sings in three languages, Swahili, Luo and English. Proving good luck often comes in threes, they also had three international hits with "Ting Badi Malo", "Unbwogable" and "Adhis Jiggy Jiggy". I had several folks tell me that they thought this was the best band of the weekend! They were also complimented by a set from K'naan, one of Somalia's best mcs and spoken word poet, offering selections from his several releases. The soulful sounds of Sanchez were next. With his roots in gospel, he delivered an inspiring performance. His latest album is entiled "No More Heartaches." Tantro Metro and Devonte came on and performed selections from"Musically Inclined", their latest album, backed by the great band Detour Posse. The melodic and wonderful riddims of Barrington Levy next graced the stage. I've always liked his music, and this was my favorite artist of the evening. Unfortunately, it was late and again time for me to leave when Sly and Robbie with Don Carlos and Cherine Anderson arrived on the stage. I was told they put on an amazing set. I was able to hear Cherine, and she has a wonderfully lilting voice. Sizzla arrived next, and mashed it up with his dancehall stylee. Heavyweight Dub Champion ended the evening, after being moved on to the Saturday schedule from Friday night due to time constraints because Sean Paul ran too late. I arrived at the shuttle stop to leave and was very happy to notice that someone apparently had gotten a clue and had figured out what needed to be done to fix the previous night's problems. The destination signs were up and the lines formed and it went a whole lot more happily and smoothly on Saturday night. Sunday morning I again took the shuttle from the Benbow lot. The shuttles seemed to be running fairly often during the day, but at night it was definitely a much longer wait. More on that later.... I arrived in time for SOJA (Soldiers Of Jah Army) to begin. This Washington, D.C. based reggae group are destined to be one of the most conscious talents of our age. The lyrics of their CD "Get Wiser" are completely amazing, insightful and moving and I enjoy their music very much. Dezarie and Ikabah from St. Croix came on next, with the highly acclaimed guys from Midnight as their backing band. Dezarie started out her singing career by performing with DJs. She also writes everything that she sings, and does both very well. They made an awesome duo! We were presently honored with "The Golden Voice of Africa" Salif Keita. Salif was born into the Malian royal family, but was disowned by his father and traditionally shunned by his culture because he is an albino. He wanted to be a teacher, but was thwarted in that occupation because he was told that how he looked '"would scare the children."' He decided to be a musician, another cultural faux pas in Mali, but it has turned out well for him. He uses many different musical styles in his creations, and none of his albums sound the same. A truly amazing man! Speaking of amazing, I'm at a loss of words of praise for the next artist - San Francisco based Michael Franti and Spearhead. I love Michael's meaningful thoughts and beautiful lyrics of his music, but I'm also awed at his immense abilities as an esteemed documentarian ("I Know I'm Not Alone", shot several years ago in war torn Baghdad, Palestine and Israel) and for being such a conscious and caring man that is trying in his own way to make this world a better place. Their new CD "Yell Fire!" was released July 26th. I actually got to meet and speak with Michael briefly, and found out that we both like watching the same shows on The Discovery Channel. Two of my favorite Marley brothahs came on next, Stephen and Ziggy. Stephen artfully sang some cover versions of his late father's, while Ziggy suprisingly performed all new songs from his solo efforts "Dragonfly" and his soon come "Love Is My Religion." Both sons of Bob sounded wonderful, as usual. Very regretfully, I left for the night just as Bunny Wailer was starting to finish up the evening. I have seen and also met Bunny several times before, and I know that he must have done a wonderful set. But, there was that danged shuttle bus line to think of. And - what a horribly LOOONG line it was!! It took well over TWO HOURS for me to get out of there and back to my campsite! I was glad that I had left when I did, as it still stretched far and wide behind me. I waited so long that I ended up talking to someone in line that had actually stayed for all of Bunny's set! I finally made it to my tent at somewhere around 4:30 AM, and I as told that Bunny played until almost 3:00 AM. Well, in closing, this year's festival was quite a mixed experience. If I were to offer my opinion, I would say that some things get high praise, while other things definitely need improvement. The food, craft booths, concert bowl, music, and especially the beautifully artistically creative and attractively priced program guide are tops with me.GREAT JOB!!! The long, steep walking route, lack of a timely shuttle service at night and lack of a committed alter able shuttle and general staff disorganization were big minuses. I know that it's the very first year at a brand new site, but that fact doesn't explain all of what I experienced. There are things that definitely need to change and improve, and they definitely should do so after so many years of this festival's existence. Anyway, as always, I hope to return again next year, rain or shine. I ain't breakin' my attendance record! CHRISTAFARI RECORDING NEW ALBUM [1155555405.jpg] A Personal Message from Mark Mohr Dear friends, it's hard to believe that it was over four years ago when we headed into the studio to record Christafari's "Gravity" album. A lot has changed over the last few years but Christafari is still standing strong. REGGAE REDEMPTION SONGS II A few months ago I was planning on devoting my summer to the recording and promotion of the second installment of our Reggae Redemption Songs series. However, our fans, buyers and distributors have spoken firmly on their request for a new Christafari album. So we've decided to postpone the release of Reggae Redemption Songs II and begin working immediately on Christafari's next studio offering. THE NEXT ALBUM In just twelve days we had finished the demo process. Then we headed off to the Bahamas where Avion and I collected a few Marlin Awards including ALBUM OF THE YEAR! We returned to Los Angeles with a fresh perspective and completed our song selection for the new album. Just a few days later we began the lengthy recording process. We are currently in our third week of recording and hope to continue tracking for the next month or two. I cannot wait for you guys to hear these new songs and sing along with us in concert! ...TO THE FOUNDATION The album will be called "...To THE FOUNDATION". We want our listeners to build their lives on Jesus Christ, the Head Cornerstone. We desire for them to be firmly planted in the Word of God and equipped with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The title is also a reference to the distinct sound of the album. THE SOUND True to its name, this album is far more rootsy than our previous offerings. We are using all live instrumentation, a whole lot of horns and a few special guest appearances. Overall, we are striving to record a timely album with a timeless sound. While certain tracks may remind you of our past offerings, on "To The Foundation", we are boldly marching forward, pioneering a rustic roots sound that will help shape the future of gospel reggae. PLEASE PRAY FOR US I am personally writing this not only to inform you, but to ask you to pray for this recording. Please pray for our physical health, our marriages and relationships. Pray that God will bless every note, lyric and vocal recorded. Pray for our distributors, record label and webstore. Pray that this album will get out to as many as possible. Pray for the future listeners of this recording and ask the Holy Spirit to use this album to touch lives and bring souls to Christ. FRUIT OF OUR LABOR As I am writing this I cannot help but think of a call I received yesterday by a former Rastafarian. He said that he became a Christian through our music and the salvation plan which is laid out on our website. I am extremely encouraged after calls like this. Those kind of calls motivate me to finish this album and hit the road so that we can reach more lost souls. But we cannot do this without your prayers and support. MY PLEA Please pray for our finances. Ask that God will continue to provide for us a s we do His work. Given our present financial situation, instead of digging ourselves into greater debt to cover the costs of recording, mastering, manufacturing and promoting this new album, we once again humbly ask you to lend a helping hand. If you have ever been blessed by the ministry of Christafari, and enriched by our recordings, please consider blessing us with a monetary love-gift of any size. Your generous donation will be greatly appreciated and enable the ministry of Christafari to press on. Our need is real and immediate. Simply make your check out to "Christafari" and please make sure your name and address are written clearly on your check. Then mail it to: Christafari 1942 259th Place Lomita, CA 90717 USA For your donation, you will get the assurance that you are blessing a ministry that is making a difference in this dark world. You will also get a huge thanks from Christafari and we will make sure that you receive a special advanced copy of this album long before anyone else has heard it! Thanks for your generosity. May you be showered with all the spiritual blessings from above! Swimming in His Grace, Mark Mohr [1155946825.jpg] Christafari www.christafari.com 2>. New CD: JADEE, "ALTAR CALL" ARTIST: Jadee ALBUM: Altar Call (ONLY $12. 95) GENRE: Soca / Ragga Soca LABEL: Flow Masters Records Produced by SHERWIN GARDNER!!! ALBUM DESCRIPTION: You've heard him before on such compilations as "Turn It Up," and "Soca Baptism." Now Flow Masters Records (Sherwin Gardner) proudly presents the debut gospel album from Ragga Soca ragga soca artist extraordinaire, Jadee! This former secular sensation used to share the stage with the likes of Machel Mantono and Bunji Garlin--In fact he still does! But now that he is a born again Christian, his lyrics and lifestyle have completely changed and his new brand of gospel soca (courtesy of producer Sherwin Gardner) is changing the face of soca in Trinidad. After taking a few years to get grounded in the Word, Jadee comes harder than ever with his debut gospel release! O n "Altar Call", Jadee crams as much energy and gospel message as possible into 15 exhilarating tracks of hardcore ragga soca! For those of you who are new to ragga soca, this music style is a blend of Jamaican dancehall and contemporary soca: a combination that is currently setting Trinidad and Tobago (not to mention the rest of the Caribbean) on fire! On "Altar Call," Jadee thoroughly represents this hot new genre with complete authenticity and pure energy. "Altar Call," kicks off with "Baptize," one of the album's most exciting tunes. The hard snare hits and driving drums provide a perfect backdrop for Jadee's declaration that he wants to see every secular dancehall, hip-hop, and reggae artist get baptized for Jesus. The drum hits and rapid fire beats keep the album moving full steam ahead with songs such as "Hallelujah," "I Pray For You," "Grooving," and the "Baptize" rem ix. Standout tracks on this thrilling new CD include "Give God Praise", and "Don't Dis." "Give God Praise," is as beautiful as it is driving as Jadee encourages us to give God all praise. "Don't Dis," contrasts the joyful lyrics of "Give God Praise," but keeps the energy level high as he militantly proclaims that no one can dis the one true God! On the lighter side, Jadee slows it down with "Don't Worry Family," "Highest Praise," and "I Believe." These songs edify and encourage with flowing messages of love, assurance, and worship. Jadee shows that he can be as reverent and worshipful as he can be aggressive and energetic. With "Altar Call," Jadee delivers a phenomenal debut gospel set. Flow Masters Records is doing great things in the gospel music scene, and this album is a perfect example of the quality that Sherwin Gardner is capable of producing. If you want to expand your taste in top-quality Gospel music get your hands on this red-hot new release today! New CD: JERMAINE EDWARDS, "ISLAND WORSHIP" [242.jpg] ARTIST: Jermaine Edwards ALBUM: Island Worship A Jamaican Experience (ONLY $12.95) GENRE: Caribbean Praise LABEL: Jermaine Edwards ALBUM DESCRIPTION: It's been quite a while since we've released a straight ahead worship album on GospelReggae.com, so Jermaine Edwards' new release, "Island Worship: A Jamaican Experience," is a welcome addition to our webstore. Hailing from the island of Jamaica, Edwards has been making quite a stir with his unique blend of worship, Caribbean worship, and smooth reggae. When listening through this inspiring release, one thing stands out above all else: song after song, Jermaine delivers heartfelt, worshipful lyrics with complete sincerity. On songs such as "Fresh Anointing," "H oly of Holies," and "I Want To Stay In Your Presence," Jermaine carries his reverent lyrics with easy vocal gymnastics and a strong tenor presence. Particularly interesting tracks on "Island Worship," include "Rise Up," "You Deserve The Glory," "Most High," and "I Come to Praise and Worship." "Rise Up," begins with a pulsing nyhabinghi rhythm and gives way to a syncopated bridge complete with stirring horn blasts and smooth saxophone and keyboard solos. "You Deserve The Glory," also stands out with a particularly exceptional vocal delivery over thick, uplifting instrumentation. On "Most High," Jermaine shifts to straight reggae with a dense rhythm section providing the backdrop for reverent, personal lyrics, as he sings: "even though I've done many things / even though I've gone astray / I'm coming back to your arms Lord / 'cause I know that's where I bel ong!" Track 3, "I Come To Praise and Worship," is sure to be a favorite with a stunning verse delivered by none other than Jamaica's hottest new artist, DJ Nicholas!
