Truckee River Regional Park hosts the second Truckee Reggae Festival this summer on Saturday, September 2 with a double headliners: Don Carlos also Pato Banton. DJ Anthony ³The Rastamon² Blackman will spin reggae when the gates open at 5pm and entertain the audiences between sets while they shop for arts and crafts or visit our beer and wine garden. Don Carlos (born Euvin Spencer) legendary reggae artist - Born and raised in one of the most deprived regions of Western Kingston, Jamaica, in a district notoriously known as Waterhouse, which incidentally is also a musical spawning ground for many of Reggae's greatest ever talents, such as King Tubby, Black Uhuru, The Jays, Junior Reid and King Jammy, to name but a few. Don Carlos started his singing career in 1965 in conjunction with other artists and quickly moved on to creating solo singles. In 1972, Don moved into a trio as one of the original contributors of Black Uhuru, alongside other founding members, Garth Dennis who later went on to joining the Wailing Souls, and Derrick Ducky Simpson. Two years after the trio's groundbreaking debut, the group split in different directions and Don continued to pursue a solo career. Within three years, developing his song writing and grooming his distinctive vocal style, in May 1981 Suffering was released. This strong release took the musical industry by storm, courtesy of a heavy roots and culture flavored showcase for the Negus Roots label. This album was a massive hit in Africa, selling unprecedented units. At this time, he worked alongside Gold, his co writer, and back up vocalist. Together they brought through such timeless creations as Harvest Time, Day to Day Living, Them Never Know A Natty Dread Have Credentials, between 1980 to 1984. Don continued on with more releases including Laser Beam, Raving Tonight, Never Run Away, Just a Passing Glance, Ghetto Living, and Deeply Concerned. During the eighties, Don was a popular artist in the Dance Hall scene with numerous top ten hits between 1982 1985, such as: Late Night Blues, Nice Time Tonight, Dice Cup, Hog & Goat, I'm Not Getting Crazy, Fight Fight Fight, Traveling, Laser Beam, Johnny Big Mouth and Spread Out. Don is still churning out solid, melodic roots reggae. Other titles in his rich catalogue include Roots and Culture, Pure Gold, Spread Out, Plantation, Slow Down Vol. 3, Prophecy, Firehouse Clash, Ras Portraits, Head to Head, Jah Light, Live in San Francisco (2002), and Special Edition to name a few. There's an old saying in the music industry that claims: What goes around, comes back around. In Dons' case, a request from Duckie for Don to continue his former role as lead vocalist in a rejuvenated Black Uhuru reunion resulted in another strong Black Uhuru album Now. 1989 marked the reunion of the original vocal trio with Don, Garth and Duckie. After six years- 1989-1994 and four albums, singing lead for Black Uhuru in the studio, and on the road, Don again went back to his solo career. His other titles with Black Uhuru include Mystical Truths, Iron Storm and Strong. All of these four albums are classics with Don up front on lead vocals. All of these titles being nominated for Grammy Awards. After the Black Uhuru reunion, Don continued to show his inspiration through his albums Ease Up, Seven Days A Week and Groove With Me. During this time Don kept on tour and in the new millennium he joined forces with the California based Reggae Angels for four years with a solid backing band. He continues to tour successfully with this band globally. Don¹s popularity has been consistently growing. He is now one of the most sought after roots reggae artists in the business. With his inspirations stronger than ever and two new albums to be released this year, Elevate The Roots and Live at Belly Up, Don has more in store for his growing number of fans across the globe. Look for his new DC Clothing Line and biography, Global Roots, due out in 2007. For continuing updates, information and music visit him at www.DonCarlosInternational.com Pato Banton is undoubtedly the reggae star for this generation. His career to date has seen a stream of chart-topping hits worldwide and his unique talent has already attracted mega artists such as Sting, Aswad and UB40 to feature on his tracks. Born and raised in Birmingham, England , Pato was introduced to music as an MC in his stepfather¹s traveling reggae disco sound-system act. At a very young age, he was already mixing records and ³toasting² (fast Jamaican rapping to a heavy beat.) While establishing a strong, local following and reputation, he caught the ear of the English Beat¹s Ranking Roger, who took young Pato under his wing and pushed him Into becoming a musical performer in his own right and expanding his sights beyond Birmingham. It paid off. With the release of his first two albums - ³Never Give In² and ³Vision Of the World², Pato¹s status began to blossom around the world. Two subsequent studio records, ³Universal Love² and ³Wize Up² combined with constant touring firmly entrenched him as a musical force to be reckoned with. Although Pato has always had major success in the United States (album sales and touring), he is a bona fide megastar in Europe and South America, selling over 3,000,000 albums and headline stadium tours. His fifth studio album ³Stay Positive² spurred the Top 5 UK single, ³Groovin¹.² Mystic Roots are winners of the 2005 Los Angeles Music Award for Best Pop/Reggae Album, Mystic Roots Band serves up an original style blending reggae, hip-hop, and dancehall, with overtones of rock, funk, and ska. MRB is consistently placed at the top of playlists by DJs & listeners of all musical genres. MRB's own national primetime TV special on TLC reached half a million viewers. This Chico-born, now San Diego-based group embraces the nature of roots reggae wholeheartedly and performs it confidently. The list of bands that they have shared the stage with reads like a "who's who" of reggae music, including The Wailers, Pato Banton, Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff, as well as Jurassic 5, Long Beach Dub All Stars, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ozomatli, and Digital Underground to name just a few. Having independently sold close to 10,000 albums, topping Amazon.com's chart of independent artist sales, and killing music download sites with their underground hit "Pass" (go check for yourself right now!), it's no wonder why Mystic Roots Band was recently voted #1 band in Playboy Magazine's #1 party college town, Chico California, and was TOP RANKED in both Reggae and Hip-Hop categories on myspace.com with over 30 million members for over six months - and still going strong. Fans describe MRB's style as a unique combination of No Doubt, Sublime, The Police, Sean Paul, The Fugees and Cypress Hill with the spirit and consciousness of Bob Marley and Spearhead. This diverse sound enables MRB to continually produce dynamic, cutting edge songs that fans are immediately drawn to. When coming to an MRB concert you are guaranteed more than just music for your ears, but rather a high-energy and powerful experience you'll never forget. With hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide, their popularity just keeps growing. And once you've seen them, you will know why. And here is your chance, Groundation will be coming to (each venues info, date /time etc) 2006 has been a busy year for the band. Starting in February doing their annual Bob Marley Tribute tour, this year with legendary drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace (from Burning Spear's band, and star of the movie "Rockers") and Jazz guitarist Will Bernard (from San Francisco based band Motherbug). They then flew to Montreal Quebec to play with Alpha Blondy for a very special benefit "12 Hours of Music Against Racism" and then it was off to Puerto Rico for their first show there ever. Harrison Stafford, the lead singer and one of the original founding members of the band also was flown to Paris France to promote their current release "Dub Wars" by Nocturne Records, the bands European distributor, to play a acoustic set at the FNAC World Music Conference. And if all that wasn't enough, playing in three different countries in two months, the band has also been busy in the recording studio working on their next release, due out in October 06, "Upon the Bridge". They will be including songs from this release on this upcoming tour.... so along with all your favorite Groundation songs, you'll also get a chance to hear some new songs for the very first time, from their soon to be released "Upon the Bridge" cd. Each of the Groundation releases have had special guests appearing on the cd's, and "Upon the Bridge" will be no exception. On this release they will have two legends in the reggae music scene, Ijahman Levi & Pablo Moses joining them. They are in the studio right now finishing up on this release, which again is due out in October. Groundation is a powerful force in reggae music today, They are respected world wide for their love of Jah music, and the postive message Groundation brings to each and every show. The word is spreading. Groundation is a powerful force in Reggae music that can not be denied. It is said that if you don't know your past, you don't know your future; well Groundation knows its past, and they're stepping into the future. While capturing the essence of true roots reggae, internationally renowned, Groundation aims to take the genre to a new height by blending elements of both jazz and dub in their sound. The band Groundation was founded in the fall of 1998 when three long time musicians Marcus Urani (keyboards), Ryan Newman (bass), and Harrison Stafford (vocals/guitar) came together to form the core of the band after meeting at Sonoma State University . They were later joined in 2000 by San Francisco based Jazz trumpeter David Chachere and the North Bay's Kelsey Howard on trombone. . Drummer Paul Spina who played with Les Claypool & Will Bernard's band Mother Bug, has been with the group since December 2001. They have added a pair of female singer's from Jamaica to the band just this year... the first is Ikesha Johnson, who the band met last summer while touring Europe when she was with the "Black Uhuru Re-Union" tour of 2005 taking the place of the late Puma Jones. She is joined by Kerry-Ann Morgan from Kingston, Jamaica, and who is currently signed to Sly & Robbie's label. The evolution of Groundation continues... from their beginnings and their love of jazz music and the freedom of self expression, they have blended this with the cultural conscious lyrics of reggae music and heavily influences of dub to create a sound that is uniquely their own. This band keeps getting better and better; their message of unity and love pulls together many different relations of our dear mother earth. From the very young to the very young of heart Soul Majestic knows how to move a crowd with their music and keeps them dancing from to start to finish. Luv Fyah, another up and coming artist, also performed with Soul Majestic this year bringing the massive some uplifting chants and smooth lyrical riddims; delivering a whole new edge to Soul Majestic’s repertoire’. Thanks to Mountain Lion Sound System for providing the DJ to warm the crowd up; Josh & Gabe Bridges are the coolest! Josh & Gabe also hosted the Love Creek Summer Music Fest the following evening. All in all, the 2006 Magic of the Night event was a huge success for the City of Sonora and for Soul Majestic with an estimated event attendance of 3,000; 300+ of which stayed at the “Main Stage” with Soul Majestic while they performed; helping the band to sell all of their CD’s and most of their other merchandise. Thanks to all that participated and attended, with a special thanks and mention to the event Sponsors: The City of Sonora, Hiatus Productions, Sign Pro of Sonora, Black Oak Casino, Leon Realty & Loans Tuolumne, Sierra Repertory Theatre and the Heart Rock Cafe. I can't wait to attend next year! The 2006 Love Creek Summer Music Fest was more than anyone could have expected! Great Ital food, fresh home brewed ales from Rocky, and several other vendors helped to provide a great atmosphere and service to the 300 or so reggae music enthusiasts that attended. The stage was set alongside a pond, that’s filled with clean spring water for swimming; it was the hit of the day. There were hiking and biking trails that seemed to go on forever and beautiful camping spots within 100 yards of the stage. Mountain Lion Sound System spun vinyl; reggae music from around the globe, getting everyone in the mood for the evening performances. Kicking off the live performances was a great band out of the Sacramento area; “Rebeloution”. Rebeloution played an almost two hour set that had the crowd dancing and singing the whole time with at least two encores. Up next was the most inspiring reggae band of the 21st century; Soul Majestic. Soul Majestic played for over two hours awing the crowd with their conscious lyrics and tight musical performance. This writer highly recommends that all try to attend this event next year. Its well worth the drive and other related cost! I'd like to let everyone know that the new issue of Amnesty International magazine contains a short article of mine on Queen Africa. The piece is complemented by a beautiful accompanying photo -- Ifrica performing at Rebel Salute -- taken by Sista Irie. As many of you know, the murder rate in JA last year was the worst ever. In response, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel and other artists and activists have been part of a bold, ongoing peace initiative in Kingston. For the last year and a half, they have brought community leaders and dons from some of the garrisons in Kingston to the table for negotiations, and out of a series of fractious meetings has come a period of reduced violence. There are cooperative projects such as Unity Sundays concerts with the proceeds going to an account shared by among several communities. I think this kind of activism shows the best of reggae, and I have maximum respect for the artists and activists who have participated in the development of their community with this level of commitment. Queen Ifrica's told me: "I believe the house is a very good start. If you're developing a positive energy, no matter where your house is, you can bring that to the community and to your surroundings, and from there we can see if we can bring about a different kind of change instead of taking up a gun." I encourage everyone to inform themselves more about human rights in Jamaica (see for instance _www.amnestyusa.org/countries/jamaica/index.do_ (http://www.amnestyusa.org/countries/jamaica/index.do) ). I'll go a step further and issue an exhortation to get involved in some way in human rights for Jamaica. If Amnesty International is not the right fit, then find your niche. There are human rights NGOs based in JA that you can find out more about. The two most active seem to be the Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights (_www.ijchr.com_ (http://www.ijchr.com) ), the oldest human rights organization in the Caribbean (est. 1968) and Jamaicans for Justice (_www.jamaicansforjustice.com_ (http://www.jamaicansforjustice.com) ), which focuses primarily on police brutality/misconduct issues and cases. Two others rights organizations in Jamaica are SOS Jamaica ("reggae people fighting for justice," _www.sosjamaica.org_ (http://www.sosjamaica.org) ) and J-Flag (a gay and lesbian rights organization, _www.jflag.org_ (http://www.jflag.org) ). You might also go to _www.jamaicagleaner.com_ (http://www.jamaicagleaner.com) and do a keyword search on "Nancy Anderson" and "Carolyn Gomes." They head the IJCHR and JFJ respectively, and they have been sources of information or in the center of the news having to do with human rights in Jamaica. They are both extremely knowledgeable and resolute in their pursuit of justice. There is plenty to read about them in the Daily Gleaner archives. Look for a greatly expanded article on Queen Ifrica's music and peace activism to appear at Conscious Party (_www.consciousparty.com_ (http://www.consciousparty.com) ) in just a short while. Many thanks to Sista Irie for contributing the photo of the artist.
