Tom and I are supposed to talk this week (though it's quite hectic, as you can imagine), he should be letting me know when would be good, or perhaps we'll use email (which, incidentally, works best when the Subject is actually what you're talking about now, as opposed to last week's topic). I was supposed to cede my position once the Bylaws were done (earlier this year), and I'm very uncomfortable holding a title I haven't the time to fulfill the duties of, nor even have I the mandate of having been generally elected to pursue an agenda. Still, I feel uniquely qualified to make things happen. I even have a new vision for RAW that could put it on the map again (but I'm not ready to share that, yet). Whether (or where) a Conference happens, or whether we hold elections remotely, an ENORMOUS amount of work will need to be done, maybe 80-120 hours by the leader alone, never mind any assistants (and that would be just in the first few months of the year). Then there's the budgetary question, but that's secondary. I have the skills but not the time or incentive, since the organization is unable (and probably unwilling) to pay me for my efforts at pulling something together. I feel like, between having hosted the 10-year Conference in '03 and hammered out the Bylaws, I've more than made my mark. Perhaps over the holidays, or when I reason with Tom, we can come up with a plan that makes sense. In the meantime, I've contacted Sierra Nevada World Music Festival on the possibility we might work together for a Conference there. And I advise all you to keep brainstorming, I've liked what Sis Irie, Daniel, Roots-ee, and others have had to say. I believe in RAW, it's unique as a non-profit networking organization, and I wish all you members faith and inspiration in coming up with positive ideas for the reinvention and revitalization of our association. But first on the list will be the need to produce folks capable of making those types of time commitments to making anything happen. Barring that, hold tight, I may (if I am granted the inspiration over the next few weeks) unveil a plan worth considering. Ites.
