Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 23:55:25 -0400 From: SOJA "American roots reggae has rarely approached the heights of classic efforts from Jamaica, but count Washington, DC's Soldiers of Jah Army - a bunch of white guys, incidentally, not that you would guess - among the exalted few who have captured the soulful swagger, pulsing rhythms and get-serious message of the genre's very best. Start with the package: the cover art realigns Africa to the left of the map and the liner notes reprint every word of the poetic lyrics. The music, all 72+ minutes of it, proceeds through fourteen "chapters" of immaculately produced, simmering songs, each with its own catchy riff and hook. This is pure pop, but it's the kind that entices you to listen more closely while you sway to its grooves, and it ages magnificently with each spin. All the pieces were written by guitarist Jacob Hemphill and/or bassist Robert Jefferson; Hemphill's lean, soaring voice contrasts with Jefferson's rougher-edged, toastier presence. Nice." I'd like to let the RAW collective know that Amnesty International has released a new report on sexual violence against women and girls in Jamaica. Click _www.amnestyusa.org/countries/jamaica/document.do?id=ENGUSA20060622001_ (http://www.amnestyusa.org/countries/jamaica/document.do?id=ENGUSA20060622001) for the press release, at the bottom of which is a link to the full 40-page report. According to the report, widespread discrimination against women in Jamaica makes them targets of sexual violence and exposes them to serious health risks, including sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Amnesty's report contends that deficient national legislation and deeply entrenched social and cultural attitudes encourage gender discrimination and violence, and the report calls on the Jamaican government to implement recommendations developed by women's organizations in JA (including the recommendations made in a women's manifesto in 2002) and amend public policy to address the issue. Supporting a recently released poetry book, Koll Pekude, Benjamin is bringing his spoken word poetry and reasonings to an appropriate place: the New Born Tribe African Culture Center on NE MLK. Vaughn is an up and coming reggae sensation. In 2004, Midnite was credited with having 10 of the 25 top-selling reggae albums for the year by Ernie B’ s, the U.S.’s largest reggae distributor. Midnite has performed at all the big California reggae festivals including the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Reggae on the River, Earthdance and Reggae in the Park. In a recent article in The Beat magazine, Benjamin describes his approach in the following quote. "I follow this principal that says 'blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly nor stands in the way of the sinner, which is you don't block a man from being what he wants to be, and then don't sit in the seat of the scornful either, which is you don't think you're better than that man, either. But you delight in the laws of Jah and in these laws you meditate day and night.' That's how my songs write. I meditate in the laws of the earth. Not the legislation - that is not law - the law I meditate in is that the sun rise in the east and sets in the west." Concerning lyrics from one of Midnites most popular live songs (never was recorded) "Love Jah," Skank states “this song actually has some very humorous and clever lyrics: [Rastaman no beef with no one, no. Rastaman a vegetarian so Rastaman no beef with no one].” Vaughn replies: "True. It is funny. See, because the human being is designed in this way. The human being does not want to be depressed just because we have to make a change. Just because we have to make an adjustment and grow doesn't mean we have to be depressed, no. So we re-institute humor and the total balance of humanity that we must work as well as play. "You see, our songs are for a good cause, truly. Whoever try to find an ugly undercurrent or try to find something different from what we're saying inside the subliminal content of the music - they will not find it. We have to really, really make a stand to try and get to the generation, because there is something the scientists of Babylon know. They call it 6 degrees of separation. What they are saying is that everyone in the Earth knows someone else or is connected to someone else anywhere in the Earth by 6 degrees. I know this already, I didn't need them to tell me. And because we know this, we know that not even mass media, not even the systematical blackout of our music, can stop this music. Because word of mouth will do it, believe me." And this is precisely how the Midnite and Vaughn Benjamin star has risen to a worldwide status that fills up clubs, auditoriums, and festival sites, by the very basic form of communication, word of mouth! KOLL PEKUDE Vaughn Benjamin as Midnite's lead singer, is one of the most prolific songwriters alive today. His 17 albums are only half of the story. He also has hundreds of poems and unrecorded songs that he has now chosen to begin to release in print form. This volume consists of 126 pages and more than 120 poems, ranging from song-length poems to 3 line masterpieces. Original line art by Midnite album cover artists like Marcus and Junior Daniel complement the written words beautifully. Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to listen to the words of Vaughn Benjamin speak when he is not in performance with Midnite knows that he is indeed an orator of the highest order when his lyrics flow in the spoken word form. In his new luminous collection of poems, Koll Pekude, Benjamin vaults the canyons of human existence, drawing in elements from life's myriad experiences and the nature of spirit, with writings that are built in the context of his questioning framework as a seeker of truths and rights. At times Benjamin takes idioms and reconfigures them, making the meaning shift and the rhythm of the poem take shape around these recognizable phrases. There are interesting sketches and photographs of woodcarvings to accompany the poetry which flow from this mosaic. The rich imagery, depth of content, word mastery, rebel spirit and freedom of thought within these works are as powerful as his recorded songs.
