Catch them live on Saturday, July 15 at Truckee Regional Park in Truckee, CA at 6pm along with Slim Kid Tre from the Pharcyde. Gates open at 5pm. Children welcome. Arts and crafts and food vendors will create a true festival feeling for the whole family. In the patois of Jamaica's Rastafarians, the word "ital" means pure and healthy, unpolluted. These adjectives suitably describe the sound and message of The Itals, one of Reggae‚s premier vocal groups, who hail from the beautiful countryside of Jamaica‚s Westmoreland Parish. Lead singer Keith Porter explains, "Well, we really not like the environment of the city. We like to live inna country and come into the city and do our work and then go back. You get more better food fe eat out there, you know? More fresher food and fresher air and t‚ing like that." .Original members, Keith Porter and David Isaacs, deliver rock-solid and crystal-clear roots harmony sounds. The Itals first broke in Jamaica with the release of "Ina Dis A Time" which went to number one on Jamaican charts. The song was extremely popular in Jamaican communities abroad and was released in New York City. In 1981 and 1982, The Itals were finalists in the Jamaica Festival Song Competition. Their 1982 song "Jamaica Style" earned them a spot on Jamaica‚s Reggae Sunsplash that year. Their exceptional performance was described as "show stopping" by Randall Grass in the book Reggae International. The Itals‚ first album BRUTAL OUT DEH released in 1982 was "a stunner" according to New York Times‚ music critic Robert Palmer, who said The Itals‚ "blend is one of the sweetest, most melodious sounds in all of popular music." GIVE ME POWER was released in 1984 to critical acclaim and took the number one position on CMJ‚s Reggae Route chart. Their third LP, RASTA PHILOSOPHY won a Grammy nomination for the best Reggae album of 1987. Their 1989 release COOL AND DREAD proved once again "that The Itals remain at the heights others are still trying to reach" (Pulse Magazine critic Doug Wendt). The Itals 1991 release EASY TO CATCH entered the music charts dramatically and ranked number one on the CMJ charts and moved up to number twelve on Billboard‚s World Music Charts. Their remake of Bob Marley’s "Could You Be Loved" became a hit with its combination of modern instrumentation and the solid roots reggae sound of their signature harmonies. Critics agree that The Itals‚ live performances match the excellence and excitement found in their recorded music. While reggae has developed many styles over the years, The Itals‚ music retains the spirituality that has been the core of reggae‚s success in America. Their live performances have been consistently praised since their first international tour to the US in 1983. The group has toured the US and Europe ever since, including performances at such hotspots as New York‚s Apollo Theater, The Fillmore in San Francisco and a smash performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival. In addition to other US performances, they have completed successful tours in over 15 countries and have performed on several MTV specials broadcasted from Jamaica. With or without a "current" release, The ITALS actively continue to spread the message of harmony and unity throughout the world with a sound that is both classic and new. Tre Hardson, known as “Slim Kid Tre,” introduced himself to the hip-hop scene as a member of the influential group The Pharcyde whose debut album, Bizarre Ride II, was released in 1992. With an eccentric mix of humorous rhymes and far out lyrical imagery, backed by a funky jazz laden soundscape, The Pharcyde blew fans away on their worldwide tour with De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. In 2000, Hardson emerged as a solo act, performing with a live band and singing as frequently as he MCs. He started his own record label, Baboon Records and released his solo debut album, Liberation, in 2002. Through this transition, Hardson has seemed to mature, but he attributes it to a “returning to the roots vibe.” “I think I just went back to what music was. It’s more organic at this point for me,” Hardson explains about his decision to focus more on the orchestration of his songs and incorporate more live music into them. He continues, “I’m trying to get people outta the mind frame of thinking that you can just put two brothers out with a DAT and a deejay. You want to give people more. I just hope it takes layers off people to make them feel good. That’s the energy I put into it. Light, love and energy.” Advance tickets are available: Tahoe/Truckee:, New Moon, Joby’s, The Dam Café, Alice’s Mountain Market in Squaw Valley, Mad About Music, Tahoe Hemp; Reno: Recycled Records.
