I'd like to let you know that my coverage of this year's Calabash literary festival has been published at Jahworks.org. See it at _www.jahworks.org/v2/cultureliteraturedetail.asp?ID=4_ (http://www.jahworks.org/v2/cultureliteraturedetail.asp?ID=4) . Calabash is the wonderful annual literature fest held at Jake's in Treasure Beach, Jamaica, the beautiful south coast property owned by director-author Perry Henzell. The festival was co-founded by Jamaican-bred, US-based author-professors Colin Channer and Kwame Dawes; its on-the-ground producer is Justine Henzell. Together they have established a popular festival of literature with a high standard. It is also a very musical festival. Each year, an artist is celebrated, and in the past fests, the merits of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff have been revisited. This year, the 'Bash chose an album for special focus: Bunny Wailer's Blackheart Man, released thirty years ago. Calabash 2006 culminated in a wonderful performance built almost entirely on this album. The band was Wayne Armond (Chalice, Jimmy Cliff, Monty Alexander ), Steve Golding (Peter Tosh 1981-83), Anthony "Billy Mystic" Wilmot (Mystic Revealers) and jazz guitarist Seretse Small. While I have you on the line, some of you might want to know about Roger Mais' Brother Man -- originally published in 1954 and reissued by Macmillan Caribbean in association with Calabash in 2004. I reviewed it that year, also for Jahworks.org, and if you'd like to read the review, go to _www.jahworks.org/music/book_reviews/BrotherMan.htm_ (http://www.jahworks.org/music/book_reviews/BrotherMan.htm) . Brother Man is a notable novel if only because it was a complex and empathetic treatment of Rastafarians at a time when they were widely reviled in Jamaican society. NEBO RECORDS IMMEDIATE RELEASE: by Ez Benjamin 202-321-2263 / contactus@mtneborecords.com (Washington, DC) - Washington, DC is teeming with a rich history of culture and music and there still exist those venues that brought that magic to life. In 1962 Ramsey Lewis recorded "The Ramsey Lewis Trio at the Bohemian Caverns" and later won a Grammy for his recording "The In Crowd" recorded on the LP "The In Crowd, Live at the Bohemian Caverns." The Cave's reputation was further built by immortals like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Shirley Horn, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and even Bill Cosby. In recent months and under new ownership, it has expanded it's music showcase to include the full diversity of the African Diaspora which has greatly influenced our lives. Tomorrow evening, Monday, July 24th, "The Cave" will feature Bambu Station Roots Band from St. Croix, Virgin Islands and Fasimbas Deep Roots Sound in what will be a collaboration of intense positive energy. Prior to their departure on their 4 country European Tour on August 2nd, the Virgin Island's own Bambu Station will highlight the evening's activities showcasing songs from their new album "Break The Soil" which will be released on July 28, 2006 on Mt. Nebo Records. Recently headlining the Washington Post's "Summer Concert Series Reggae Night," Bambu Station has been cited as one of the most "unbelievable" groups in music today due to their emotional, relative and gripping live performances. While their previous albums "Talkin' Roots I & II" and "One Day" have all garnered awards in the industry, the band continues their credible representation of the stinging issues still facing their people and communities. Many audiences, writers and fellow musicians alike gather to support and celebrate with this band, but Monday, July 24th will be extra special. Joining Bambu Station will be Fasimbas Deep Roots Sound currently based in Baltimore and spearheaded by DJ Ceska of Mali/Nigeria. One set of DJ Ceska's selections will easily transform any listener to the dual-mind of a roots lover; revolutionary and meditative. DJ Ceska's efforts to provide a positive environment through music also supplements his activism in fighting for and raising awareness about the medical needs on the African continent. DJ Ceska works with the African Diaspora Medical Project (http://www.admproject.org), a Project that not only raises awareness, but also offers viable solutions for persons to get involved. Further information will be available at the showcase. The show starts at 9pm sharp and will be spirited. If the past is any indication, The Cave's reputation is about to grow.
