June 1, 2006 - - Nancy Lewis is pleased to announce that Wisconsin-based Mountain Lions International (RAW #1918) has retained Entertainment Works to execute an international media relations campaign for new CD releases. Formed in 1999, Mountain Lions International (MLI) performed their blend of African, Reggae and rock – “Afre-rok” – at the Friends of Africa Picnic in Milwaukee in July 2000, which was followed by two years of writing songs and perfecting their repertoire. MLI was invited to perform at the annual Battle of Bands sponsored by the University of Wisconsin (Whitewater campus) in 2002; they received First Place honors for their 45 minute set. Vybrayshuns, MLI’s first CD, was released in 2004 on the MLI label; the CD contains 13 songs stressing the message of unity among all peoples and making the world a better place in which to live. Vybrayshuns receives airplay on mid-West commercial and college radio stations. The band performances include nearly 150 concerts per year at venues and colleges in the mid-West. MLI has a quality about their music which is rare in today’s music industry. Their positive messages and incontestable energy effortlessly flows direct to the listener. MLI’s beats and overall musicianship are classic reggae but also bring a great world rock essence to the table, making their sound original and uniquely appealing. – Review of Vybrayshuns, IMG Music Promotions. MLI’s current recording projects are nearing completion and will be presented in two CDs for release later this year. Heart of Gold will comprise 13-14 songs concerning personal relationships, and the 12 songs on Voice of Reason will focus on social issues. Entertainment Works was established in 1989 to provide marketing, public and media relations, and publicity services to musicians and bands, and specializes in Reggae and African music. The agency was on hiatus from 2001 until re-opening in early 2006 to represent Jah Levi (www.JahLevi.com) and the Robert Harris Group (www.robertharrismusic.com). To listen to tracks from Vybrayshuns, visit www.MountainLionsInternational.com and www.slmtv.com/artists/lion/index.html. Music reviewers, deejays, magazine and zine editors can contact Entertainment Works to request a copy of Vybrayshuns. MLI includes: Joe Seisay (drums, percussion, vocals) – Born on Bonthe Island, Sierra Leone, West Africa, Joe performed with the Freetong Players of Sierra Leone, a folk cultural UNICEF group, and toured Africa and Europe playing djembe drums. Joe moved to Wisconsin in 1996 to attend college, and received his BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Education from the University of Wisconsin. He is an original member of the band. Daniel Mustapha (lead vocals, keyboards, percussion) – Born in Kono District, Sierra Leone, West Africa, Dan met Joe in 1997 when they attended school at the University of Wisconsin; he is an original member of the band. He performs in English and his native languages of Mende and Kono and, in conjunction with the band, writes most of the lyrics,. Chris Dencker (lead guitar, percussion, vocals) – Born in Beloit, Wisc., Chris began his musical career at age 10 on drums, switched to bass at 14, and began studying guitar at 18. Chris holds a BA in Education from Beloit College, and joined Mountain Lions in 2003. Jon Schneider (bass) – Born in Madison, Wisc., Jon began his musical career in the fourth grade, playing alto saxophone throughout high school, and taking up the bass guitar in his senior year. He founded and performed in a ska band for three years. Jon met Joe and Dan in 1999 and they began the basement jams sessions that evolved into the formation of Mountain Lions International. Jon has an AS from the University of Wisconsin. Juan Renteria (percussion and vocals) – Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, Juan began playing bass guitar when he was 14 years old and picked up drum sticks at 18. He played with several garage bands specializing in hard/punk rock, hip hop and rap. Juan met Chris and Jon at MLI concerts and, getting to know the band, was asked to join MLI to play the congas in 2005. Juan frequently jumps behind the drum kit to allow Joe to perform on front stage, and he picks up the bass guitar to allow Jon to play sax. KUNTA KENTE MAKES US "SMILE A WHILE" (New CD): [229.jpg] Artist: Kunta Kente (Only $13.95) Album: Smile A While Genre: Dancehall ALBUM DESCRIPTION: With a classic deejay style similar to old-school deejays like Macka B and Brigadier Jerry comes Kunta Kente; the hottest new name in gospel dancehall. David Swaby was born on October 7th, in Kingston Jamaica, and then raised in the lush green hills of St. Ann (the birthplace of Bob Marley). He is now residing in Miami, Florida and has opted for a new name; "Kunta Kente". When most people hear his new moniker, the first thing that comes to mind is the popular character in "Roots", the 1977 made for TV saga. This series was based on a true story, and believe it or not, the original Kunta Kinte was also born on October 7th, (1767). Kente is a rapidly evolving gospel reggae artist who has been performing live locally and internationally in churches and festivals sharing the stage with top artists and ministers. He has been described as a "Heartical, cultural gospel dancehall artist that brings the crowd to their feet, keeps them dancing and praising god with his sharp cutting gospel lyrics." With a freshman release on his own label (Special Effects Records), Kunta is sure to garner the attention of gospel reggae fans worldwide. He kicks off his debut solo project with an almost Dub Poetry">dub poetry style on "The Coming" and then follows with a modern dancehall rendition of the Sunday school classic "Somebody Wrong," so put your hand in the air and praise Him! After this is the pocomania influenced "Give Thanks", and the upbeat "The Truth Hurts" that quotes the Christian classic; "Stand up and tell me if you love the Almighty!" In fact, it seems like almost every song on this album alludes to at least one traditional Caribbean church hymn. Other noteworthy tracks include the tribal stomping "People Dying in the Jungle", the bouncy "Hold the Faith", and the raggamuffin hip hop "New World Order". For eight consecutive nights the original "Kunta Kinte" riveted the country on "Roots". On "Smile a While" the Kunta Kente of Gospel Reggae will keep you riveted for all fourteen tracks. With an original sound and a cristocentric message, this album is sure to make you "Smile a While." Complete your gospel reggae collection and pick up a copy today! CARLENE DAVIS RELEASES "ROCK ME JESUS": [228.jpg] Artist: Carlene Davis (Only $13.95) Album: "Rock Me Jesus" Genre: Roots / Caribbean Praise / Soca/Punta/Calypso ALBUM DESCRIPTION: The great thing about the burgeoning genre of gospel reggae is that there is a little something for everybody. You have your hardcore dancehall, strictly roots and culture, minor key dub, and even reggaeton... And for those who are looking for the lighter side of reggae--look no further. Carlene Davis' "Rock Me Jesus" may not have much "Rock" in it, but it sure has plenty of "Jesus". This is a fun album filled with major key, upbeat and saccharine sweet tunes guaranteed to keep the congregation dancing and all the church ladies clapping. Carlene Davis had already been a popular reggae star in her native Jamaica with a whopping 15 secular albums under her belt before she embraced Christianity in 1996. And since her conversion, she has released another seven stirring gospel release. The latest of these is "Rock Me Jesus", where Carlene "gets her praise on" in a variety of settings, sampling soca on the stirring "Ambassador for Christ" and shuffling in some contemporary reggae on the infectious title track. Jamaican rhythms predominate throughout, with producer Tommy Cowan's contribution particularly apparent on the conscious "Songs of Zion" over the "Ring the Alarm" riddim. Caribbean Gospel music has seldom been this irresistible While most of th e beats on this album include outdated old school hip-hop loops, roots abound on songs like "Little is Much". There are also a few praise and worship classics such as the ever popular "Angus Dei", "Show Me Your Way" and "Draw Me Close". Of particular interest are Carlene's bright and bouncy interpretations of Third World's "Try Jah Love," (written by Stevie Wonder), The Melodians' "Rivers of Babylon" (referenced in "Songs of Zion") and her clever re-wording of Chalice's hugely popular hit, "Praise Him". I have been waiting for years for someone to cover this one. Davis herself co-wrote six of the album's 15 tracks with her husband and reggae icon Tommy Cowan. Musicians featured on this include the legendary Desi Jones on drums (Chalice, Skool Band), Othniel Lewis (Change, Christafari, Chevelle, Papa San), Chris McDonald, Robbie Lyn (Sly & Robbie, Mighty Diamonds) on keyboards and Lloyd Parks (Augustus Pablo, We the People Band) on bass, Dean Fraser (Luciano, Firehouse Crew) on sax and Brother Time (Ikete drums). For background vocals Carlene brought in Cheryl Crooks, Nadine Sutherland, Bunny Brown, Leroy Palmer, Lisa Wilson, Ryan Berry and Naomi Cowan. Don't be misled by the title or the album cover. This is not a rock or disco project. In fact, the song selection for "Rock Me Jesus" is very consistent with Carlene's previous releases, yet the production has stepped up a few notches. If you liked any of her past recordings then you will love this new release. Complete your gospel reggae collection and pick up your copy today! SHOP NOW --> http://www.gospelreggae.com 3>. JUNIOR TUCKER IS "SOLD OUT" FOR JESUS: [227.jpg] Artist: Junior Tucker (Only $13.95) Album Title: "Sold Out" Genre: Roots / Caribbean Praise / Ska/Rocksteady ALBUM DESCRIPTION: Junior Tucker is a former child prodigy that became an adult reggae star in Kingston, Jamaica's cutthroat music community. From the 80's and throughout the 90's, Junior Tucker built a reputation as one of Jamaica's foremost secular reggae artists and delivered hits like "Don't Test" (1990). A few years later, he became born again and gave us something "Brand New" and then made us "Ready for the Rapture". Since then he has been a staple in the gospel reggae community touring the world representing Jesus Christ and the music of his homeland. Now a pastor, Tucker is married with three children and curren tly residing in Florida. Junior Tucker has won the hearts and admiration of fans around the world with his distinctive gospel reggae worship sound. "Sold Out" is Tucker's third gospel release and his first live recording. It is an uplifting and vibrant worship album with a Caribbean twist. Junior is a seasoned professional and no corners were cut on the production or presentation of this album. This island praise and worship experience was recorded live at the infamous "Church on the Rock" in Kingston, Jamaica. On "Sold Out," you will find yourself singing along with Hill Song, Maranatha and Hosanna Music classics performed with their own unique Caribbean flavor. Playing with a tight band full of crack-shot session players, Tucker also delivers some standout originals such as the title track, "Sold Out", (recently nominated for song of the year at the 2006 MAJA Awards). The roots reggae "Robed in Majesty&qu ot; will soothe your spirit and the worshipful "I Give you My Heart" is sure to touch your soul. Standout tracks include the "No Turning Back Medley" (with references to Frankie Paul's "Kushumpeng") and Junior's bouncy ska take on "The Lord Reigns". On the soca infused "Jesus in You and Me", Junior chants, "The only Jesus that people see is the Jesus in you and me--let your light so shine, let God be glorified!" Amen! Whether singing over traditional gospel, one drop roots riddims, pseudo dancehall beats or even bubbly ska, no one can deny this minister's conviction and heartfelt sincerity. This project is sub-titled "Worship from the Islands", so expect plenty of traditional worship with a bit of reggae flair. In typical Tucker style, Junior delivers his patent blend of gospel, with a touch of roots and a tinge of dancehall. Get ready to glorify God with a whopping 73 minutes of worship tracks that will challenge, encourage and leave you "Sold Out" for Jesus! SHOP NOW --> http://www.gospelreggae.com 3>. GOSPEL REGGAE 101 (An interview with Mark Mohr): [1050510194.jpg] The following article was posted in the GMA issue of Uzone Magazine. Written by Falana Monroe While it's possible that I could be the last urban gospel music fan on the planet who up till recently knew little to nothing about Gospel Reggae, I dare say that I may have at least one or two witnesses out there. Sure, I had heard of some of the genre's more well-known artists like Christafari, Papa San, and Sherwin Gardner, but until I went head to head with Gospel Reggae pioneer Mark Mohr, I didn't reali ze just how deep the roots of Gospel Reggae run and how much fruit the genre has produced over the years. From dancehall to roots to reggaeton (which all fall under the Gospel Reggae umbrella), most of what is popular in mainstream reggae has been ceremoniously dipped in the waters and is being used to glorify God and win fans from all walks of life to Christ. This issue we wanted to shed some light on Gospel Reggae's most popular artists/albums, teach you some common reggae terms, and introduce you to on one of its biggest supporters/pioneers, Mark Mohr. If you didn't know much about this genre, the get ready for Gospel Reggae 101! MARK MOHR AT ATTENTION Gospel Reggae Pioneer Speaks Out (An interview with Christafari, Lion of Zion Entertainment and GospelReggae.com Founder) Q. How has Gospel Reggae transformed since you started Christafari in 1989? A. When I started I thought I was the only person with this revelation. I found out that people in Jamaica, Australia, and England were trying to do the same thing, but they really never surfaced. After laying the groundwork with Christafari, the thing that changed Gospel Reggae the most was the salvation of reggae's 5 top secular artists--Junior Tucker, Stitchie, Papa San, Judy Mowatt and Carlene Davis. When they came to Christ in 1997, they legitimized gospel reggae, but some of them did so by emphasizing the gospel and not necessarily the reggae. With the exception of Papa San, most went from solid roots reggae to black gospel/Caribbean Praise. But since then, artists who've always done Gospel Reggae - like Prodigal Son, Sherwin Gardner, Koen Duncan, Gitta Dan, Monty G, and Mr. Lynx have come on the scene. These artists have no holds barred, through them dancehall reggae has become extremely authentic, paralleling what is going on in the world without watering down the lyrics. So now there's something for everyone - the saccharine sweet regga e, and the extreme Red Bull reggae! Q. What are some of the biggest challenges that Gospel Reggae and other forms of Christian World Music are facing? A. The biggest challenge is the industry, and the division in it. The promotion of Gospel Reggae has happened from the Spirit of God lifting it up and just an underground buzz. But as division continues, it's tough to find a place for us to fit in. Because we're on the fringe, we walk around at conferences like a sore thumb. It's been frustrating, but we're still doing it and making an effort. The work that Cross Movement's doing to make Hip Hop accepted, I'm looking at that and saying this is what we need to do to get Gospel Reggae accepted. Q. What do you pray the future holds for Gospel Reggae? A. Beyond our label, beyond me being an artist and my wife being an artist (Avion Blackman), I really want to forward the genre. If we do not grow as a unit together, we will never be cons idered a force to be reckoned with. If divided we stand then united we shall fall. So my prayer is unity, to help create a united front among the artists. I desire for us to figure out ways to get the media's attention to thus get the attention of the people who are being led astray by a lot of today's secular reggae music and ultimately bring them to Christ to the soundtrack of reggae. GOSPEL REGGAE PRIMER (Excerpt from www.gospelreggae.com/glossary.html) Caribbean Praise and Worship: Much of today's Caribbean praise and worship music simply reflects what was popular in the black gospel market in the U.S. about a year ago. It is music for the church and often incorporates a dash of country, bluegrass, and r&b with a lot of black gospel. To hear some great Caribbean praise and worship check out artists like Carlene Davis, Junior Tucker, and the Grace Thrillers. Chatting: Also c alled deejaying, chanting, toasting or reggae rapping. The vocal style of a dancehall deejay that raps staccato lyrics in thick Jamaican Patios (Creole) over syncopated Caribbean beats. Dancehall: This name can mean a style of upbeat reggae, or a reggae club that plays loud music. In the early 90's Dancehall became known for its thick patois toasting by deejays and was notorious for its computerized beats. After struggling to gain acceptance in the church, with the help of pioneering efforts of Christafari, DJ Stereoman and others, Dancehall now runs things in the gospel reggae scene. Deejay: The lead vocalist in a dancehall song. This artist raps staccato lyrics in thick Jamaican Patios (Creole) over syncopated beats. Jamoo: Invented by the late Ras Shorty I (formerly Lord Shorty), jamoo is "Jehovah's Music." Focusing on a roots sound including acoustic guitars, congas, steel pan, and other acoustic instruments, Ras Shorty I and th e Love Circle performed music that is influenced by African rhythms and singing, by North American jazz, by funk, and by calypso and soca. Reggae: First used to describe a Jamaican musical style in 1968 by Toots Hibbert, the term "reggae" literally means "to the King." Gospel Reggae is now growing stronger than ever with hundreds of new artists representing the genre throughout the world, and all of this while giving praise to the true King of all Kings-Jesus Christ. Reggaeton: Initially called "underground", reggaeton (pronounced ray-gay-tone) is a gritty hybrid of hip-hop and dancehall reggae set to primarily Spanish lyrics. Rivaling their secular counterparts are Christian reggaeton performers like Joel Upperground, Vico C, G.O.S., Manny Montes, Fluxy B, Funky, Big Boy, Lutek, Rey Pirin, Christafari and Dr. P--all baptizing the Reggaeton for Jesus Christ. Roots: As its name dictates, roots is the true foundat ion--the cornerstone of a host of musical branches. These are the traditional vintage Jamaican sounds that have almost become extinct with the invention of the computer chip. Gospel artists such as Christafari, Solomon Jabby, The Israelites, and Leon De Judah are still holding up the torch of roots music for future generations. Soca: If reggae music is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, then soca is the pulse. It is a unique hybrid of Caribbean instrumentation and bangara/chutney beats, bridging the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago--the African and the East Indian. If you want to hear some sanctified soca, check out "Soca Baptism" which presents a generous sampling of this Caribbean music for the mind, body, soul, and spirit. SWIMMING WITH ALLIGATORS (Avion Blackman Radio Features): [1121409388.jpg] Avion Blackman Lion of Zion Recording artist Avion Blackman was recently featured in Campus Crusade For Christ's "Women Today" radio spots. Here are a few of the scripts using Avion's story that have ran recently: Swimming with Alligators #1 Avion Blackman loved climbing trees, swinging from vines, fishing, and swimming with alligators. She described her adventurous days living in a tropical rainforest with 17 brothers. Born in Trinidad, Avion lived in luxury as the daughter of a famous Calypso singer. She was very outgoing and began singing on stage at age four. Her life changed dramatically when her family moved to the jungle. But because her father came to know Jesus, their days were filled with Bible studies and music. At 12, Avion learned to love Jesus, too. And today she sings tender songs about her love for God. Friend, reach out to others with the love of Christ. Use the talent God has given you. You may never be famous, but God will honor your gift of service to Him. Swimming with Alligators #2 Today Avion Blackman is the bass player and vocalist for the Christian Reggae group Christafari. But her life could've been very different. Her father was a famous Calypso singer who traveled around the world. But he searched for something that would give true purpose and meaning to his life. He looked into Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Rastafarianism. Yet nothing satisfied his soul until he met Jesus Christ and asked Him into his heart. After a drastic move away from the world's temptations, Avion's Dad made Bible studies part of his family's daily activities. At age 12 Avion invited Jesus into her heart. Dear one, Jesus is the only One who can satisfy your soul. If you'd like to know more about God, come to our web site WOMENTODAY.ORG. REGGAETON BAPTISM REVIEW ON UNITED BY ONE: [214.jpg] Reggaeton Baptism Various Artists (Lion of Zion Entertainment)   Lion of Zion have long established strong branding with their 'Baptism' compilations which has covered Dancehall and Soca genres. Now it's the turn of Reggaeton, a musical style that has enjoyed unprecedented international exposure of the last 12 months. Things open up with one of the most distinctive tracks to be released "Magnetic (Bien Safao)" by Puerto Rican duo Ivan Y AB . The overall proceedings feature some of the leading heads of this fast-growing Latin genre like Funky "Lo Que Traigo Es Flow" and Rey Pirin "Mi Testimonio" although probably not the best choice of song as the mainstream-turned-Christian artist has stronger material out there. Newer material can be heard courtesy of the Lion of Zion camp. "Do You Know" has a features list including Christafari, Justin Dillavou, Dumbstruck and Redcloud. Mark Mohr (Lion of Zion) again is behind the production on "Manos Pa'Arriba" which is a club-shaker through and through. Although to be fair his production does lean more on Dancehall than Reggaeton. Gospel's answer to Tego Calderon, Lil Pito, gets a look in via "No Más Guerra" and the Hip Hop/Reggaeton fused banger "Shot Callas". Believe it or not, Reggaeton has gone through its various phases of sound and on "Palmas" (Soldado) we get a throw-back to the styles heard in the mid-90s from Panamá. If you are looking for the more Latino-rhythm Reggaeton then "Pa' La Party" by Fluxy B will be up you street mixing in infectious Merengue melodies. There have been Gospel Reggaeton compilations available in the past but for the large part only pushed within Latino circles. With this album giving access to a wider listening audience, this should win over some new fans.
