Happy Mardi Gras! It is good to see the spirit of New Orleans alive and kicking. The phoenix will rise and one of America's great cultural epicenters will be great once again. Here in Asheville, we welcome the warmer days and spring like weather with open arms! CX-1 has been playing gigs all winter in anticipation of these coming months, and we hope you will come and join us in a celebration of rebirth. ANDY POND AND THE POROUS BORDERS OF MUSIC On a very exciting note, Andy Pond has been selected to participate in the Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop sponsored by Edgar Meyer! Entitled The Porous Borders Of Music, Andy will be in New York from May 14-21 for this event. The Carnegie Hall website has this to say about the workshop: The Edgar Meyer Workshop: Porous Borders of Music {http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/explore_and_learn/art_proftrng_2006_meyer.html} Double bassist Edgar Meyer—whose work spans Western classical and American roots music—will work with 15 young musicians in a workshop designed to create a bridge between the two traditions. Throughout the weeklong workshop, the musicians will immerse themselves in improvised and composed music, compositions by Meyer himself and student-submitted works. The culminating performance will take place in Zankel Hall on May 21, 2006. The idea of the Porous Borders Of Music is at the very core of what CX-1 represents. We congratulate Andy on his deserving selection and look forward to see what he brings back to the melting pot! (smile). http://www.mackieconscious.com/ Go figure... It's hard being the Queen! Just teasing dear hearts... I'm Proud to introduce to you all, Mobay's (Montego Bay Jamaica) Number 1 son Mackie Conscious. I always say it is JAH who guide I; by chance many years ago, I link up with Inner Visions, Mikey Dread, P'ta mon, Henry Turner Jr and Flavor, Daddy Roots and so on. Each has a uniqueness about themselves, the one quality they have that unifies them is the Humbleness they have that shines like a shining star from the depths of their hearts; the undeniable love for the Creator and the Roots of the Roots of Reggae. Just prior to leaving for Jamaica, I was approached by a very sweet Reggae DJ, that insisted that I check out Mackie Conscious, he gave me the website information, I looked at it.. You know I am always invited to look at websites. So I say, no problem, I will have him bring music up to me for airplay. Well, I get to Jamaica and I make inquiries about him, the positive response I received from the people on the street, made me think, Hmmm! maybe I should check him further. It so happens that my sister knows him through business.. (smile). This situation is special in itself, as I never involve my family in the business. You see where all this divine direction is coming from. I speak with him on the phone, my sister sets up the meeting and we meet. The second I see his eyes, I know he's for real, without even have heard any of his music. We talk for a long time. I tell you, he is so positive, all I could see was P'ta Mon, being so loving and caring about the little people. A heart of pure gold. I was sold as soon as he open his mouth, he's very humble, very similar in Mannerisms of both Inner Visions and P'ta mon. Very independent like Mikey Dread, pure Conscious he is, every song has a message for all to hear and enjoy! Check him out... Pure Conscious Yardie - Roots Reggae! http://www.mackieconscious.com/ Shame on Mobay for keeping this Jewel hidden for too long. Well here I am once again shocked out of my socks! I am not going to be selfish and keep this secret, I want to share with you all - Mackie Conscious - Fall in step with Mackie's most conscious vibes. He's no slacker.. For some of you who have had the chance to attend Tony Rebel's Rebel Salute or Mobay's Sumfest, Mackie Conscious will not be a surprise to you all. But to the rest of the world, come an check Mackie Conscious for yourselves... I guarantee 1st rate Jamaican Reggae Musical Quality! My favorite tunes of his are: What If - Should I Run - and Cant be a King... It's all good -- He's definitely deep!! By the way: When I finished speaking with Mackie and I turn on the television - Mi heart almost stop - there he was live in Video Color on CITY 10 Video - Jamaica!!! - JAH definitely guide I (smile) Excerpts from Mackie Conscious Song "Cant be a King": You can't be a King if you not Royal, You can't be a friend if you not loyal, You can't watch my back if you are a Rascal; Yourself you got to know. Each man has a purpose, Each man has his style, Each man has a right to live, each man have a right to survive; one thing he know for sure is everything is just for a while. How can you be in front of Jah,Jah face when you are singing the devil praise. It's yourself you got to find. The event will celebrate the life and birthday of Marcus Garvey, Jamaica's first nationally recognized leader. Spear has led the way musically, in keeping Garvey's spirit and message alive, and in advocating through his songs. Through the teachings of Garvey, combined with his own life experiences, Burning Spear endeavors to educate, inform, and uplift people around the world with his message of self-determination and self-reliance for all African descendants. The original "Creation Rebel", Rodney holds the Marcus Garvey Youth Club near and dear to his heart, as not only the place where got his start - but as a place from which a new generation of Jamaican's can spring forth and realize a bright future. He is a longtime benefactor of the center, which offers the youth of Jamaica's St. Ann's Bay region a place to learn, grow, and realize their dreams. The center is also home to an infirmary, which provides services to the area's underserved poor and disabled citizens which will be the benefactor of this special concert.. On a recent trip to his home parish, Spear, along with his wife and business partner, Sonia Rodney, visited the Marcus Garvey Youth Club. They were struck by the magnitude of the unmet needs they saw there. >From the youth center to the infirmary, they repeatedly were confronted with striking reminders of the immense poverty which is an everyday reality for so many in Jamaica. A Word from Burning Spear: "People of the world, I man spent the holiday home in Jamaica. The Spirit of Marcus Garvey lead me right to Marcus Garvey Youth Club - right on the beach. All I could hear in my head was it's time for me to get out of Babylon system. Anyone can be Babylon. So come lets us chant down Babylon and be strong. Looking forward to see 700 people of the world doing their country walk at Marcus Garvey Youth Club in August 2006. Don't forget to buy a copy of Our Music for yourself and a friend. We have to show the world that roots music can sell. Let's show the world that we can be move together as one musically. This is the place where I man got started. I man is requesting the honor of 700 People of the World to witness I man's first ever performance on Garvey Lawn under the Order of Jah Rastafari." See Burning Spear live in concert - in his home pariah and in his native element - on Saturday, August 12th, 2006 on the Marcus Garvey Lawn of the Marcus Garvey Youth Club in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica.
