Yet I find myself invited to yet one last one for this month! Awilo Longomba April 28, 2006 performance at - Erika Badu's - Black Forest Theater - Dallas, Texas. KNON 89.3 Irie FM Reggae DJ's were invited tonight by Promoter Clive to an Africafest presentation: Awilo Longomba Live. Representing our Reggae Radio formats tonight were: DJ's - Ima Uwagbai (African Forum ) and Jah Larry (Rebel Reggae International) along with Queen Mushiya (African Forum). Once again I found myself at a disadvantage, as I had not heard of the Artist prior to attending this concert. It was a good thing that the Selector, DJ Richie, set the stage by playing some of the wickedest sounds around. Skilled DJ he is set the pace on high by Interchanging without a heartbeat from African to Caribbean to Soca and on to Reggae Music. Systematically enticing the crowd to have a good time. The highly diverse crowd was out in groves in Dallas tonight, there was an impressive representation of the motherland AFRICA. In attendance were Zimbabweans, Congolese, Somalian, Nigerian, Liberian, Gambians, Kenyans, Sudanese, Ugandans, Tanzanians, Cameroon's and a host of other Nations of Africa, along with an impressive group of African Rasta's and American's (Rainbow Coalition Represented). Dallas/FT Worth does boast that it has one of Americas largest African Communities with over 150,000 in the Dallas Metroplex alone. So it was not a surprise that they would come out tonight TO party and support their star Awilo Longomba. The largely diverse demographics were a rich blend of people with the majority being African women. It appears that, Awilo must be a ladies man, because the front of the stage was dominated by about 80 screaming African female fans. Trust me, I never saw what was to come. When Awilo took the stage, mostly all I could hear were the salutes from the audience and of course the screaming fans. (smile). At times I could not even hear the music and in actuality I didn't need to hear the music, the visual of Awilo interacting with his fans from the stage, put a smile on my face. Awilo Longomba derives from Africa - The Congo to be exact (formerly called Zaire). Without knowing who he was, I guess my first thought was that he would be reminiscent of Senegal's Yossour n'dour. Wrong! I quickly learned that he's more like the Puerto Rican heart throb Ricky Martin, only African. The man is so personable. He constantly walks the stage singing to his audience and at times, bending down to touch their hands. It was more than obvious that the fans loved him up, through out the performance they threw money on the stage and at one point some of the fans took to the stage and danced and put money on Awillo and his dancers, blanketing the stage with U.S. Dollars (male and female). According to Ima Uwagbai - KNON 89.3 Irie FM Reggae DJ he says: "In the African Culture, tossing money on the stage or putting the money on the Persons, acknowledges the Joy that the fans are feeling in regards to the Artists performance." Hey, I wonder if Awilo needs a third dancer. (just teasing) Back to the Real Deal: Awilo Longomba and his Dancers - Michelle (from African's Ivory coast) and Daniella (from the Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe), had the audience so charged up that they were begging for more and really trying to get on that stage to touch this man. As a matter of fact, Awilo invited a fan from the audience on stage and commenced to sing and dance with her to the delight of the screaming crowd! Of course they threw more money on the stage. Even though I did not know his songs, having never heard his music, I can honestly say I was surprisingly REALLY impressed. Awilo sung in many African dialects, therefore connecting with his audience on all levels. Only when he performed a song in French did I understand the words. Nevertheless, from where I was standing, the man was sounding sweet in any dialect. I would actually go out and by any of his CD's ; actually I will go further than that, I would actually PAY to see this man perform again. Thanks to the Promoter Clive, I did not pay to attend this concert, I was invited, but, I would pay to see him perform in the future, his performance would be money well spent. I can honestly see what the fans are seeing in him, he is a performer, who gives his all in his stage performance. His Dancers are so charged up they had the crowd stunned! It's a sight to watch for sure. Well, I will leave it at that and let you all see for yourself. If you intend to catch Awilo Longomba and his Dancers live, make sure you wear comfortable dance shoes. Beware that the performance will be energy packed, he will have you moving ALL NIGHT LONG! Awilo says " I love my fans." - No wonder this man - Awilo Longomba is referred to as: "The most sought after Congolese Artist in Africa and Europe, Now America.
