He began playing mbira at the age of five and is self-taught. Through listening to other gwenyambira, or great mbira players, he developed a strong attachment to and love for mbira music. He says, "Our music is both medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and the dead." In 1991 Musekiwa was a key member of the band Panjea, founded by Chris Berry. He composed the hit song "Ganda" on Panjea's Zimbabwean album. Currently Musekiwa teaches mbira at Prince Edward School in Harare. He is an excellent singer, dancer and drummer and plays both mbira dzavadzimu and nyunga nyunga. Following up on his widely acclaimed CD with Jennifer Kyker, entitled "Tsunga," Musekiwa released his CD "VaChingodza Budai Pachena." His newest CD, "Kutema Musasa," has just been released (late 2005). His musical style helped to obscure the color line in the music industry at a time when music was often classified within the strict confines of race. BEFORE THE LEGEND: The Rise of Bob Marley (Amistad/HarperCollins; ISBN: 0-06-053991-7; May 2006; $21.95), by acclaimed journalist Christopher John Farley goes beyond the myth to reveal Marley¹s private side drawing on interviews from those closest to Marley and information that has not been previously published. Farley takes the reader on a journey from Bob Marley¹s birth in the impoverished town of Nine Miles to his early days as a struggling, talented, determined, and spiritually gifted artist, to the making of his debut album Catch a Fire. BEFORE THE LEGEND features new interviews with bandmate Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley's close family members, including his wife Rita, his mother Cedella, and his children. The book also contains the first-ever published interviews with some of Marley's "white" family members and uncovers fresh information about the reggae great's family history, including the revelation that Marley's father, believed to be white, was actually a person of color. In this first major biography of Bob Marley in more than 20 years, we see Marley as never before: in music, in love, in life, and finally on his wild ride to worldwide acceptance and adoration. GOSPEL REGGAE TUESDAY: MISSION EPISTLE CD NOW AVAILABLE: [225_t.jpg] Artist: Mission Epistle Album: Stand Up Genre: Roots / Dancehall / Soca/Punta/Calypso / Culture Label: Servant's Quarter s Music Price: Only $13.45 ALBUM DESCRIPTION Out of Trinidad & Tobago comes the versatile Mission Epistle and their debut "Stand Up", an album filled with fresh and spiritually uplifting sounds. Comprised of founder Keron Thomas and fellow members Jason "J-Square" Joefield, Dwayne 'Silent-Sah" Bedeau and Nicole Thomas, this is a vocal group who have recorded numerous singles over the past couple of years including "Teach The People (Them To Listen)", "Mission Definition" and others. As several members of Mission Epistle are children of pastors, it is not surprising that a prominent thread of Christian life experience and biblical inspiration winds its way through the twelve tracks on this nicely varied album. To begin with, Mission Epistle linked up with rootsman multi-instrumentalist and producer Jah Servant, himself a resident of Trinidad after making the move from Canada last year. It turns out it was a smart move. In this writer's opinion, though Mission Epistle has successfully written and recorded soca and dancehall, it's the roots and culture singles they've cut which have really made an impact on me. So, is "Stand Up" well soaked in roots riddims or is it more diverse, as Mission Epistle has thus far revealed themselves to be? Well, it turns out the latter is true. Okay, but can Jah Servant pull it off with the soca and dancehall riddims? The answer, surprisingly, is a resounding yes! Smartly, Jah Servant never seeks to confine Mission Epistle, rather enables them to employ their greatest musical strength, which is variety. When I heard the lead-off single "Meditate" for the first time, I immediately recognized the mellow roots riddim from the instrumental intro on Owen Uriah's latest album, "The Heart Of Uriah". According to ME's J-Square, he was in the studio with Jah Servant when he was working on Uriah's album and when he heard this track he was inspired with what became "Meditate". Backed by a deep bass line, live sounding programmed drums and tranquil keyboard and guitar sounds, Mission Epistle's contemplative lyrics and combination of chanting and singing make this song a refreshing listen- especially with headphones. "Worship You" is a track which works in a similar vein. With lush backing harmonies and chanted verses over a roots riddim, accented with beautiful classical guitar picking, Mission Epistle delivers a devotional track unto the Lord Jesus Christ. "Rocks & Stones" is another roots tune which provides encouragement to the listener with the chorus "Christian people, don't duck from no rocks and stones, don't duck from no rocks and stones, JAH will never l eave you". The song is a call to stand up against the attacks of the wicked one, knowing the Almighty is your protector. Voiced on a riddim by the very same title (appearing as a full out instrumental on Jah Servant's "Good Soil" CD) "Rocks & Stones" is yet another winner on "Stand Up". "Sing Praises" is exquisite roots with bubbling organ, punchy guitar injections and hauntingly sweet melodica. Top it off with the singing of Silent-Sah and the cultural chanting of Keron Thomas and you have another solid tune. In addition to roots and culture, this album also contains some slammin' soca and dancehall tracks; the digital dancehall vibes of "Give Your Life", "Seek His Face", "Judgment" (featuring Antus and Gitta Dan) and "Clear De Way" work nicely. So do the spicy soca vibes of the title track and the infectiously worshipfu l "King". Without a bad track on the album, Mission Epistle's "Stand Up" stands as a very impressive debut and what may go down as one the better reggae releases of 2006. GOSPEL REGGAE TUESDAY: RIDDIM SESSIONS CD NOW AVAILABLE [226_t.jpg] Artist: Various Artists Album: Riddim Sessions Genre: Roots / Culture Label: Servant's Quarters Music Price: Only $13.45 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: "The Servant's Quarters- Riddim Sessions" ("SQRS") is an energetic project that features two new riddims; "Nah Bow Down" and "Critical Condition". These roots and culture cuts include performances by th e likes of Sherwin Gardner, Gitta Dan, Koen Duncan, Mr. Danny, Mention, Mission Epistle, and nine other gospel reggae artists from the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. "SQRS" is truly a new thing with several established and new voices in reggae music. As you may have guessed by their titles, the two riddims featured here are quite intense and therefore lend themselves to some urgent themes and serious vibes. From a purely musical standpoint, "SQRS" is an impressive work with superb playing and excellent production. Riddim (or "rhythm") projects continue to be very popular in the reggae community, especially in dancehall, where various artists each take their shot at riding the same version. Compilations like "The Servant's Quarters Riddim Sessions" are often beneficial for both the radio deejay (for mixing) and the listener alike as the format allows the sonic current to keep flowing as one vocalist after another comes in to deliver their message and musical vibes. The trick in pulling this off is to have a solid riddim and a good variety of fresh voices and songs to form a cohesive collection of individual expressions. With a number of roots-oriented projects being released over the past few years, the dancehall is no longer the only forum where the riddim experience is finding appeal. No stranger to such works, Jah Servant was the riddim creator, primary musician (everything except the horns) and producer of the enjoyable yet highly underrated "Unity Riddim Sessions Vol. 1" (Star Recordings, 2004). In addition to that project, over the past couple of years this Canadian-born rootsman has collaborated with and produced for such artists as Owen Uriah, Audrey Gordon, Mike Roots, Sherwin Gardner, Mention, Jah Pickney, Drae, Mission Epistle and others in addition to r eleasing two fine instrumental/dub recordings of his own. Overall, It is an excellent compilation overall which showcases numerous vocal talents and presents to the conscious reggae listener a collection of fresh tunes, top-notch modern roots vibes and impeccable production. "FORWARD" THINKING WITH 'IMISI: [223_t.jpg] ARTIST: 'Imisi ALBUM: "Forward" PRICE: Only $13.45 Polynesian roots reggae duo 'Imisi is currently enjoying their #1 position in GospelReggae sales charts (last 30 days) for their brand new release "Forward". After a successful launch event for this critically acclaimed album, they have done a string of dates including a performance last Friday before approximately 1,500 youth pastors at an Urban Youth Worker conference at Azusa Pacific University. They have performances in California for the next two weeks with Christafari and then David will hea d off to Nigeria to tour with Christafari, Avion Blackman and Solomon Jabby. Here are some more details on the band: Imagine venturing on a flight to the South Pacific via Air Jamaica with a Bible and some soothing reggae to pass your time--now you're in the mood for 'Imisi, a group that will take you to the next plateau in gospel reggae. 'Imisi is headed by brothers David (Tevita Kouso Kousa) Fohe on keyboards, guitar and lead vocals and Jubilee (Siupeli Koula) Fohe on drums, keyboards and lead/deejay vocals. The two began singing together at a young age in a Tongan church where their father was the pastor. In their teens they lead their youth group's worship team and went by the name "Youth Exodus". As they began performing more and more at other churches/events, the then five-member group quickly evolved into far more than just a youth worship team. In 1999, they released their first recordingYouth Exodus, "Live" through Eclectica Music, an imprint of N-Soul Records. In 2003, the three core members, David, Jubilee and Joel signed a deal with a new record label, Lion of Zion Entertainment, helmed by their good friend and longtime mentor, Mark Mohr. Since they were no longer youths, they dropped their old moniker and decided to call themselves 'Imisi. In their homeland of Tonga (an island near Samoa and Fiji), 'Imisi (pronounced ee-mee-see), means "Image," for man was created in the "image of God" (Gen 1:27). For their debut Lion of Zion release, 'Imisi enlisted production assistance from two of their musical icons, Quino of Big Mountain and Mark Mohr of Christafari. On "Visions of the Father," the group's sound continued to develop as David's sweet textured voice eloquently contrasted Jubilee's smooth nasal tone and clever singjay stylings. Following it s release, these two siblings were compared to everyone from Luciano to Gregory Isaacs, and even labeled "The Reggae Katinas." The album sported clean-production, sweet lovers rock reggae, solid vocals and testified to the group's uncompromising faith. Two years later and one member lighter, (former manager/background vocalist Joel Roberts is no longer in the band for personal reasons), 'Imisi joined Christafari in the studio for the recording of "Reggae Sunday School." They performed on "Higher Higher", "Jonah" and "Jesus Loves The Little Children". David also lent his sweet baritone voice for Calypso the Coconut, one of the lead characters featured in the album's skits/interludes. In 2006, after over four months of recording, 'Imisi returns with their most ambitious studio recording to date. Paying homage to the roots of Jamaican music, 'Imisi advance s the genre with their landmark album "Forward". Brothers David and Jubilee continue to carry the torch and have grown tremendously as songwriters since their previous release. This critically acclaimed album is sure to satisfy any listener with its vibrant vocals, sophisticated songs and inventive arrangements. This time around award-winning producer Mark Mohr set out to replace the synthetic with the authentic. The entire album boasts live instruments; drums, bass, keys, guitar, percussion and a blistering horn section--creating a full-bodied sound reminiscent of Bob Marley. Backed by an all-star cast of reggae musicians, 'Imisi's sweet textured voices and distinct dancehall style command the listener's attention from the first note to the last. On Forward, 'Imisi convincingly melds Jamaican lovers' rock reggae with dancehall, seasoned with their own unique Polynesian flavor. This blend cre ates an international sound, which is contemporary, yet timeless. While Forward is primarily an English language recording, 'Imisi peppers in Jamaican patois, Tongan (their native dialect), Spanish and Portuguese. These Pacific Islanders from the United Kingdom of Tonga are in great contrast with the message of today's secular reggae acts. Packed with powerful spirit-engaging tracks, Forward is an evangelical musical ministry tool like no other with lyrics that are bold statements of faith, comfort and hope. This is reggae for your soul. 'Imisi's new album "Forward" is available at: http://www.gospelreggae.com For more information on 'Imisi visit: http://www.imisi.com 4>. CHEVELLE DOES THINGS "HIS WAY" [224_t.jpg] ARTIST: Chevelle Franklyn ALBUM: "His Way" PRICE: Only $14.45 Currently #4 on the Gospel Reggae Charts with a bullet After a long hiatus, the reigning queen of gospel reggae returns with an exceptional follow up to her massively popular gospel debut, "Joy". Though it's been years since the release of her previous effort, "Joy" has remained a chart topper and this stunning new offering provides all the momentum necessary to propel Chevelle back into the stratosphere. While the greatest struggle with most recording careers is overcoming what many call "the sophomore slump," this is of no concern to dancehall diva Chevelle Franklyn. For though this may be her second gospel album, given her extensive secular career prior to "Joy", Chevelle is far from a novice. There are a handful of notable differe nces between this album and her last as Chevelle continues to strive for excellence. First of all, the lyrics have more depth and maturity this time around. Chevelle has definitely grown in her faith and delivered an album that will minister to and convict both the parishioner and pastor alike. Unlike her previous offering, "His Way" is not limited to the contribution of one producer. While Danny Brownie did an excellent job in producing "Joy", many of the riddims of that album were boilerplate versions ridden by his whole crew of artists on "Yow 1 and 2". As such, they could not afford the movement necessary (such as bridges and key changes) to accompany such an accomplished vocalist as Franklyn. This time around we hear smart production, intuitive arrangements, clever collaborations and the astonishing vocals of an established veteran. Some may recall that in her secular days, C hevelle voiced the song "Dancehall Queen" with Beenie Man for the ever-popular movie and soundtrack of the same title. Now with Jesus firmly planted as the King of her heart, she is determined to do things "His Way." She breaks the silence and kicks off the album with the energetic and addictive "King Jesus". If the chorus melody sounds familiar, that's because it was inspired by her Billboard charting hit "Dancehall Queen." But this time around she has flipped the lyrics and redeemed the song. Instead of singing, "Go girl", she says "Go with God", and proceeds to sing and deejay a lyrical altar call with tremendous skill over live instrumentation. Just listen to the glass shattering high note about two minutes into this cut and you will understand why she is the reigning queen of gospel reggae--YOU GO GIRL! Undoubtedly my favorite track on the album is th e minor key roots dirge, "Weeping and Wailing." I simply can't get enough of this boomshot! Back in her B.C. days (before Christ), secular producers would often partner her with a deejay like Shabba or Beenie Man. She would sing the hook and they would toast on the verses. These producers sure missed out. For on dancehall tracks like the "Salvation" and "Nah Nah Nah" we hear the authoritative yet immaculate vocals of a deejay that can spit lyrical circles around her secular counterparts such as Lady Saw and Tanya Stephens. Other notable tracks include "Would You Go", featuring DJ Nicholas, "Love Can" (her passionate prayer for Jamaica), the convicting "Walk Holy" and the magnetic "Come". Whether she is singing over hard-hitting dancehall beats, effervescent roots, soothing praise and worship or even accapella, Chevelle never ceases to entert ain and inspire. Her last album "Joy" is one of our top ten all-time best sellers and I am confident that the flawlessly produced "His Way" will soon follow suit. Whether you like dancehall, roots or worship, this album deserves your full support. Pick up your copy today--It will not disappoint. Review by Mark Mohr SHOP NOW --> http://www.gospelreggae.com 5>. [221_t.jpg] Mr. Danny, Divine (Flow Masters) Only $13.45 Ever since Sherwin Gardner brought us Turn it Up, the big buzz in the gospel reggae scene has been about a relative newcomer named Mr. Danny and his infectious new sound. For some it may be because his tone is reminiscent of popular artists like Yami Bolo, Junior Reid or I Wayne. However, I think that the reason why Mr. Danny is currently riding a huge wave of popularity is because of his memorable melodies, heartfelt lyrics, genuine spirit and Sherwin's production expertise. While this standout album contains mostly conscious roots reggae in the similar vein of "Divine" and "Dust Them Away", Danny also dabbles in a little raggamuffin hip hop ("Addicted") and dancehall ("One Day" feat. Sherwin Gardner). Check out the contagious "On My Way", "More of You", "I Know" and the slammin' urban remix of "Divine". This record isn't all about hype. The strength in Divine is found in it's laid back vibe. This is mellow roots reggae on an urban tip. This album will be one of our bestsellers for 20 06 and beyond. Mention, Hear My Prayer (Flow Mstr/Servant Qtr.) Only $13.45 [222_t.jpg] We first felt Mention's "Fire" on Trinity Mix 2001. A lot has happened since then and Mention has developed significantly as an artist/songwriter. The production of this CD was a joint effort between the award winning Sherwin Gardner and the masterful Jah Servant. Using both sequencing and live instrumentation (including some blazing electric guitar licks), this energetic album is a spirited first offering from a relatively new artist. The songwriting is solid, the hooks are catchy and the accompaniment is up to par with the best that has come out of Trinidad lately. Mention both sings and deejays on this album. Stan dout tracks include the authoritative "No Fear", the ragga-soca "Love Is Ah Flag", and the energetic "Praise Till Ah Morning" featuring Sherwin Gardner. Overall, Mention's Hear My Prayer contains 16 passionately delivered tracks performed by a genuine believer that has a tremendous heart for reaching the lost. Zema, Overcome (Melchizedek Music) Only $13.45 [220_t.jpg] From Melchizedek Music comes the highly anticipated fifth release from Zema (pronounced Zay-mah). Overcome is strictly roots reggae featuring all live instrumentation. Replete with ten tracks of pure one-drop delight and three sweet dubs, this album was made with the conscious roots reggae lover in mind. It was recorded at Bob M arley's Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica with some of Jamaica's finest singers and players of instruments such as; Sly and Robbie, The Gladiators, Horsemouth, Dalton Browne, Sticky and Ansel Collins. There are three vocal duets on the album with Abijah, The Gladiators and Mark Wonder. Roger Steffens described Zema's sound as "healing music for the 21st century." As a devout Messianic Jew, she also reveals her deep Christian faith that is reflected in all 13 cuts of potent conscious roots reggae and dub. Thank you Zema for another album drenched in authenticity & soaked in spirituality! Riddim Invasion 5, Various Artists (Lion of Judah Sounds) Only $13.45 [219_t.jpg] Busting through the ga tes with yet another musical stampede is Riddim Invasion 5 from Lion of Judah Sounds. Packed full of breakneck dancehall beats and five sweltering riddims ridden by top gospel dancehall artists such as Monty G, Mr. Lynx, Yankee, and Avalanchee, this album is all killer and no-filler. With a whopping twenty tracks courtesy of Frost and crew, Riddim Invasion 5 is sure to satisfy the most diehard dancehall fan.
