On VETERANS' DAY SUNDAY, November 12 will be featured vocal veterans DION KNIBB & SKIFFINGTON, easily the strongest & smoothest voices currently in N.E.. Then comes perhaps the most fiery of Dub Station singers (who'll likely make a cameo appearance on the 12th, in promotion for his own show): SHAKA BLACK will perform THANKSGIVING SUNDAY, November 26. This will be his ONLY U.S.-appearance for ALL of 2006, since he lives in the Caribbean now. His album "Chant Rastafari" will be showcased. ABIJAH will probably make his own year-end appearance, now being scheduled for New Year's Eve in Arizona. Stay tuned for details on this night to remember! And keep in touch - always visiting www.Reggae4i.com for updates on next year's tours and performances. Post-Tour Journal / "Web Log" Pictured (dimly) are some members of the ABIJAH & DUB STATION crew on a day off, with Hopi/Apache Ernest Taho. When asked: "how was the tour?" - for me, at least - "good" doesn't do it justice. Instead, I found myself saying "well, it had its ups and it had it's downs." That puts it (literally) in perspective. We clocked 10,500 miles behind the wheel, including switchbacks past the highest peak in Colorado (at 14,000 feet) & a breathtaking sunset visit to the Grand Canyon. Including the flights to Hawaii, and the island-hopping and driving out there - through the lava fields, from one side of Big Island to the other - things went pretty smoothly. We changed the oil 3 times and had the windshield replaced on account of a growing hair-line crack (sustained somewhere in California). Of course there was the time we were (wrongly) pulled over for "moving slowly between lanes." But otherwise, we felt pretty anonymous and awe-struck traveling across this vast country called the U.S.A. (how 'bout them Redwoods!). Though some had seen it all before, most of us (including Ryan - our engineer - who'd never seen snow or gotten lost on an interstate), saw many of those 17 states we passed through for the first time. His third time through the Rockies, drummer Glen Grant got altitude sickness (on the very last show, in Aspen). Adding an Oxygen mask & machine to his stage kit got him through, though. Even for a veteran like him (or maybe, especially for him, cause of the energy he puts into his playing), it's no mean feat getting up on stage and playing through two-and-a-half hours of music nearly every single night for a month. New guitarist Jus Goodie was master of his own opening songs as well as those of 2nd guitarist (but also a front-man) Tom O'Brien, who's harmonies behind Abijah's own 90 minute set grew increasingly tight over the course of the journey. Some felt O'Brien's set was a spiritual core of the night. But Goodie's MC skills are unparalleled, and fired up each night in fine style. To top things off, in Colorado, Las Mariposas, the singing duo of female back-up singers out of Boulder, niced up the stage with us on their own mics. Yours truly, bassist Kyle Russell kept it moving, even when he was dead tired (enter the joys of chocolate covered coffee beans), and road managed mostly without missteps (we had to switch hotels only once, on account of the trash-strewn hallways and homeless "Disco Billy" pitching camp in the parking lot). Eight is a large number of guys to travel together without driving each other crazy (which we pretty much managed to avoid). Abijah perhaps more than anyone, put out enormous, good energy, again, not always under the best of circumstances. New foods (away from his Jamaican fare, which we only found authentically maybe twice on the whole trip) and highway eating can take their toll. Glen and Tom served up some good home cooking with their portable burners, but mostly, we had to eat out (which again, was not as bad as I'd expected). Sometimes due to the distances, we were late and didn't even get to eat properly before shows. Other times, the turnout was disappointing (like the one place that didn't have our names on the marquis; or the other whose box of 1200 flyers we mailed them for promotion came back a month later, unclaimed). The true test of a professional band is when they deliver 110% each time they take the stage, regardless of the conditions. Which brings us to the core of what a tour's REALLY supposed to be about (no, not the after parties, though there were plenty of 'em - we won't go there). The music is what it's all about! And there was lots of it, as mentioned: 2.5 hours nightly. No audience went unsatisfied. Of course, when you have Bobos (the newest traditionals) in the house alongside tourists, it can be a stretch to please everyone. But Abijah does it: there's something there for everyone, from ballads to roots anthems, even a dancehall number that always produced outstanding crowd participation (most memorably when a lady in Maui took it all of except for her bikini). Message was the order of the day (or night, as it happened - every show was a club date - except the legendary Monterey Bay Reggae Festival). Abijah admonishes: "my music must can listen to even by the little children, I do not degrade Women, they are the Mother of creation." Tom O'Brien questions the "Modern World" in which you "can't tell the President from a Terrorist." Goodie pleads "never let me be, alone in this world" on "Jah Watch Over Me." Management was universally impressed with the group's professionalism. The banner was ever-present and edutational flyers were distributed everywhere. Ryan (our engineer) got there 3-5 hours before show time and tweaked (and enhanced, often with some of our own equipment) each PA, often making it sound the best it'd ever sounded (for that particular room). Donny's bubble percolated beneath & Rider's melody (both on keyboards) soared, but none higher than Frankie Ranks on Saxophone, who always had the ladies in a swoon. We even drew in columnist Tom Orr, who played percussion to what turned out to be our biggest audience turnout (outside of the 6,000-person Festival): maybe 600 people were there at Laguna Beach. All in all, this 21-city tour was a success. Nearly half-a-thousand CD's got out there. Friends were made in every town. Surely each looks forward to welcoming back the crew. Next time: more and better. www.MySpace.com/AbijahPeppa3Music www.MySpace.com/DubStationReggaeArtists Though Abijah's had a MySpace presence for a minute (you can watch the "Overcome" video there), Dub Station's only just come on board. In the growing wake of good radio play on The Island, it's time to put out a single, which is being spear-headed by Jamaican distributors All Access. Featured will be the flamenco-inflected dancehall number "Moving to the Top," and "Tribute to the Martyrs," which hails up the greats of Reggae music and Rasta culture. A video's in the works for one or both of these songs, which will be instrumental to complementing the audio play. You can hear these and the other 19 songs on the pre-release of Abijah's new "Swept Away" CD at the KRucial Arts Online Store of www.Reggae4i.com. The Wild Wild West Dub Tour is going out in conjunction with Utmost High Records, Dubmusic Productions and Kings Music International. Scientist mixed many of Sugar's hit songs in Jamaica in the 80's and 90's. The band features world-class musicians such as Santa Davis, Vince Black, Haile Maskell, and a horn section featuring Balboa Becker on trombone, and background vocalists. The full band, along with a stable of dynamic artists, will be dubbed out by the Dubmaster himself - Scientist. This is a massive show you don't want to miss! Sugar has recently released a new CD called Tribute to Studio One on the Tads Records label. He continues to produce hit records such as the 2002 INDIE winner for Best Reggae Album, "Rare Gems". Sugar Minott literally ruled the dancehall for a decade from the mid 70's to the mid 80's. Admiral Tibet was predominant in the dancehall later on in the 80's as a conscious roots singer. Tibet is best known worldwide for hits such as "Babylon War" and "Leave Peoples Business". Tibet is big in Europe, consistently doing tours and festivals. Hawaiian Lyon's smooth style has been getting out into the western U.S. and Hawaii, with his heartical lyrics and all-star musicians. Best known for the song, "Sweet Sexy Lady" and "Let it Grow", his CD's have been well produced in conjunction with Scientist, who has also done the mixing. Pashon, Sugar's daughter, does some songs of her own, and then sings harmony for her father. Last year Sugar did the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California, and then did a similar tour from San Diego through LA, the four major Hawaiian islands, and up the west coast to Canada and then down through Montana to Colorado. The shows were successful in bringing out a lot of roots people, and there is a lot of interest for him to come again. Now a year later, Minott again brings a style he created in the early days of Jamaica's dancehalls in the 70's and 80's, when he defined sound system performance and elevated singing and deejaying to new heights with his Black Roots record label and the Youthman Promotion sound crew. Sugar’s crew offered more lyrical variety and talent than virtually any other sound system then or since. He helped mentor and give experience to many of the artists that were later to become trendsetters in their own right, such as Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Junior Reid, Frankie Paul, Michael Palmer, Half Pint and Little John. Wherever he performs, Sugar plays to a solid base of loyal fans, whether it be in the clubs of London, the dancehalls of Kingston or the nightclubs of New York City. Sugar is known for working with a stable of talented artists, and this tour package is no exception. For the tour poster and sound clips, go to http://www.myspace.com/dubtour. The event will be called Hollywood: A Higher Calling. The event will be a private concert and "reasoning" with invitations to all the top people in Hollywood (actors, director, producers, executives). This free event will include performances by recording artists known for their lifetime message of love as well as addresses from Native American elders, Tibet monks, Mayan elders and other teachers of love. Taj Mahal has agreed to perform. We are also planning to invite the Marley family, Santana, Natalie Merchant, Luciano, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Michael Franti, Sarah McLachlan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and other artists. We believe that that if well-known recording artists, whose music is loved and whose journey is respected by many in the film and TV industry, extend a private invitation to their counterparts in Hollywood to join them in further devoting their talents and energies to bringing forward a message of love and forgiveness through their work, many will listen and accept their invitation. Indeed, there may be no more effective group to influence this industry - an industry that has such a great impact on molding the consciousness of the people. Click here to go to our website http://www.rastaheart.com JOURNEY TO THE MAYAN ELDERS In December, our family will journey to the highlands of Guatemala to meet with some of the Mayan Elders. After bringing forward through our books the wisdom of several other cultures including the Rastafarians, Hopi, Havasupai and Iroquois, we are considering doing our next book on the wisdom of the Mayans. We will be meeting with the Elders and speaking at the Ix-Canaan Project's Activation Maya event that will be held near the Mayan ruins in Tikal, Guatemala around the Winter Solstice. Activation Maya Website-click here http://www.ixcanaan.org OUR NEXT BOOK We are presently working on our next book, The Path of the Peacemakers:A Guide to the End of War. The books offers a coherent explanation as to how to end war on the planet. It examines that throughout history the healing of human moral blindnesses - the advent of democracy, the end of slavery, advancements of rights for all people no matter their color, gender and sexual preference, the end of apartheid, the dismantling of colonial empires, fair labor practices, the political enfranchisement of women, etc. - has never been initiated and propelled forward by the political, social religious or business leaders. It has always begun with a small group of people holding the vision and sharing that vision with more and more people until a "tipping point" was reached in human consciousness and the needed changes were enacted. This has been the same formula that has worked through the ages and will be the one successful in healing the last, but most important, human blindness - war. People will demand that their leaders make peace - not war. Then tremendous resources will be freed up to advance humanity and heal our planet. It may be difficult to imagine how the teachers of love - the peacemakers - can possibly prevail over the teachers of fear and separation - who seem so well organized and powerful. However, one key factor must be understood - the peacemakers have the power of the Creator accessible to them as it is the Creator's will that we live in peace and love. The success and manifestation of global peace is guaranteed as the consciousness of the people comes in line with the will of their Creator. Just teasing, keep on calling and writing. It's nice to feel missed. (smile). I do aprecilove the Love and Concern from each and everyone of you; I can assure you I'm still alive and doing well, traveling a lot to the various Islands in the Caribbean; Jamaica and the USVI and generally taking a little up front sabbitacal from the Reggae scene. (www.knon.org>) . More about the Club selector DJ's who are locking down Dancehall in the Dallas Ft. Worth Area: The Gambia's own DJ Ebou's More Fyah Crew (www.morefyah.com>) in December: I am very proud to give you some straight talk from our very own Reggae Radio DJ Selector - Jah Larry - Tuesday Night's Rebel Reggae International (I was honored to personally interview him and get some much needed history regarding the Reggae Radio beginnings in Dallas). I am likely proud of the accomplishments of my brethren straight from Kingston yaad, Jamaican MC Steady Rankin along with Big Boy and Jah Youth Sound (www.reggaemusiciams.com>) - trust me when I say Steady and crew brings that Pure Yardie Jamaican magic to the Dallas Dancehall Scene on Friday nights at the Caribbean Grill. It's like a scene from New York City: Patrons are lined up around the corner to get in!!! The year 2006 found us with many losses in the Reggae World: With the passing of Reggae Singers:Culture's - Joseph Hill and Desmond Dekker to name a couple. All of our fallen brothers will be missed. Beenie man also suffered a loss with the passing of his brother Brian (senselessly). No one is ammune to the passing of love ones, I myself suffered personal losses in 2006. KNON 89.3 Irie FM Dallas Radio DJ Crew also suffered a loss of the man who personally brought African/Caribbean/Reggae Radio to Dallas - FT. Worth area. The Original 89.3 Irie FM African, Caribbean, Reggae Radio DJ - DJ Eric Owusu. Our heartfelt love and prayers goes out to their families. Give Thanks for my Personal Savior: DJ Culture C - based out of St. James, Jamaica. Thanks for the many hours of reasoning and for your strength and the much needed guidance. I will always be greatful for the love and attention and the hours you spent with me while I was in and and out of Jamaica the last 4 months. Thanks for not allowing me to give up on the industry. Our culture, our music - "Reggae". Thanks, for shining a bright light of hope through my tunnel of pain. The many deaths this year made me think of the song "Where do we go from here"? (Not Ed Robinson's song, even though it's of the same title) to summarize the song it goes; where do we go from here? In the World where there are syns and tears. In this world of confusion, it's hard to steer away from sinking sand; In this time of tribulation and desturbing souls, people living in fear, leaders just don't care. It goes on to say "My heart cries out, but from my eyes not a single tear'. Where do we go right now? the cry is everywhere, poor man in despair, people just don't care. We have to make a change, make it better, we have to rearrange; we have to make it right, right now. Look to the Guidance of JAH! Jah see's your trials, knows your limitations! Look to JAH, is where we should go from here. Not so much the death of my family members sent me into despair, it's the fighting and injustices I see surrounding Reggae Music in the U.S. I don't see this same type of dysfunction in Jamaica, I do realize that Jamaica is not perfect, but I also see a strong negative undercurrent in Reggae in the U.S. That is what is contaminating the true message of "Love". Where is the "Peace, Love and Unity". Reggae is not just about, how much money you can make. It's about true "Love, peace and Unity" and respect for our brothers, whether they are million dollar generating entertainers or not. Reggae is not a music to separate people, it is generated to bring people together in Love and Unity. I just wish, those who are spinning Reggae, would also stop the madness, search out how you are communicating the music to your listening audience. Remember that you are the force that is bringing the music to the people via airwaves, it is your responsibility to maintain the integrity of the Music - Reggae. I say this because, I grow tired of listening to the negativity from ones who are spinning the music. Unfortunately, I'm in a position, that I am inuadated with the Bad and the Ugly... for example: a couple months back I recieved a call from a female Reggae Radio DJ. The conversation in itself was depressing, from the time, she opened her mouth, there was nothing but, slackness and negativity coming out. She constantly berated her shows co-hosts,especially the other female co-host, in the most vulgar of ways imaginable. What makes it so bad is when you tune in to their Radio program you would think it was all about "peace, love and harmony". It's all a façade. I Thank JAH everyday, that they are not Jamaican Reggae Radio DJ's. All I have to say is (From George Nooks song).. If you think his majesty is sleeping you better think twice! He will never allow Babylon to mash down Zion's eye.. It takes very little energy to be Position, very little energy to show love, meditate on life and show respect for each other and lets get on with REGGAE RUNNINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In a positive manner. Give Thanks to two of my special sisters in Reggae: DJ. Sister Yasmin Girl!!!! - Crucial Dance Riddim's KMFB FM -California - I know your struggle continues, just know you are an inspiration to a whole lot of us!!! (smile) Reggae TV Queen - Carmelita Harris - Irie Vision/Worldbeat TV - San Francisco California - You bring a honesty to the Reggae Business, keep being yourself, mini skirts and all. LOL - No, you are not a Rasta Woman and You don't pretend (so many pretenders out there), you are, who you are with the Highest of Integrity, the Singers Love you up!! Nuff Respect!!! Special Happening December 2, 2006: DJ Mike D Magician Annual Christmas Party, featuring Live on Stage the First Impressions @ the Caribbean Grill, 3068 Forest Lane: corner of Forest Lane and Webb Chapel. Doors open at 10PM - for more information call:972-230-1745. - The Trini Man has a definite plan for you to Party in a Caribbean Atmosphere. Since the Trini Man can't get enough of the Jamaican - The Queen's will be in the house - Mushiya and Amy. Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz, Jamaican Movie Veteran - Paul Campbell - in "Shottas"! I am one of those guilty ones, who had a pre-showing month's ago of the Jamaican Movie "Shottas" starring Ky-mani Marley, Spragga Benz along with Veteran Jamaican Actor - Paul Campbell. Yes, I am guilty, however I will still go out and pay to see the Movie on big Screen to support my brothers!! and Jamaica filming. Hey, I have been a fan of Paul Campbell for many years and will pay to see him on the big screen in a play anywhere, he's just simply a delicious actor, with a wide range, he can play serious, comedy anything, he is just all around versatile and a joy to watch! I was however, really surprised by Kymani and Spragga, man, Spragga and Ky-mani together put the DU in Dynamic Duo, they played Kingston Rude Boys to to hilt!!! So belivable, you will probabably, watch your back when they are around. (not necessary (smile), just superb acting.. Ky-mani and Spragga - big things a coming to you darlings! Hmmm 10 years ago: just remember 10 years ago I said to you all, watch out for KY-Mani, he has a presence, a definite presence, not just the singing. Ky-mani is a naturally superb Actor and drop dead gorgeous!! with undeniable sex appeal, it's all in the eyes...(Ky-mani speak volumes with his eyes) - at times you have to take a double take, as some expressions are so much like his dad's - Bob Marley. I probably watched Shottas 20 times and still can't get enough. Spragga Benz and Ky-mani are superb in their roles, and Paul, lawd (let me catch my breath) can you get any BETTER!!!. If I did not realize that they were acting, I would definitely shake in my boots, they bring those characters to KINGSTON RUDE BOY LIFE. There is a lot of violence in this movie, but it's still worth seeing, the story line, is too real, the acting is way past SUPERB!!! I'm not going to give a way the plot. Also starring is: Louie Rankin, Ningaman and Wyclef. A must see Movie. Director: Cess Silvera Support Jamaican Movies and catch "Shottas"! Peace!!
