New CD: Mr. Lynx, St. Matthew & DJ Counsellor's "Kingdom ARTISTS: Mr. Lynx, St. Matthew & DJ Counsellor ALBUM: Kingdom Vibrations GENRE: Dancehall / Culture / Roots LABEL: Kingdom Dub Entertainment RETAIL: $15.99 Our Price: ONLY $12.95 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: With this inventive CD, Kingdom Dub Entertainment shows us that the recipe for a hit album is as easy as one, two three... First you tap the creative genius of DJ Counsellor as producer and deejay. With his own label and a close relationship with Dr. Myles Monroe, Counsellor has been called the P. Diddy of gospel reggae. Counsellor has already brought us an arsenal of hits such as "Bust a Prayer", "Jesus Freak" and "Hail Him Up" and is notorious for teaming up with the best in the genre. Unlike "Totally Linked", DJ Counsellor doesn't rest on his own laurels for this release, he calls in the big guns. Add to the mix the ubiquitous Mr. Lynx and you have some real fire! Over the last few years Lynx has quickly become a legend among the gospel reggae ranks. After a slew of hit singles and two best selling albums he is currently at the top of his game with no evidence of slowing down. Lynx alone is sure to propel this project into the stratosphere. But Counsellor doesn't stop here... In contrast with the sweet singing style of the legendary Lynx are the gruff deejay skills of the street smart St. Matthew. There is a bigger buzz about this new artist than any other rookie on the scene. After being featured on over eight other albums, ( and singing the hit single "Pop off the Word", there is a huge outcry for new material from this burgeoning artist. St. Matthew completes the lineup proving that if you have the right talent--Three is never a crowd! "Kingdom Vibrations," kicks off with Mr. Lynx, DJ Counsellor and St. Matthew flexing their skills on the title track, setting the tone for this hot new release as they declare "I hope you're ready for this Kingdom Nibration!" Indeed, these Kingdom Vibrations are strong as each artist utilizes his own vocal talent over 14 tracks of dancehall/hip-hop/reggae riddims. On songs such as "Leaning," "Jamming," and "Why," Mr. Lynx keeps the energy high with his trademark alto flow. With "Love Me," Lynx slows down the vibe and delivers a heartfelt love ballad over a liquid smooth hip-hop/reggae riddim. Jamaica's St. Matthew hits hard with "Up Rising," and " No Cassanova;" two hardcore dancehall tunes with more than enough bass to keep your speakers vibrating. Slowing it down on "For The Gospel," St. Matthew sings of the trials and tribulations that sometimes accompany living a life dedicated to Christ. DJ Counsellor does his part to keep the energy of this album high as he rides hardcore dancehall beats on songs such as "DJ School," and "J.E.S.U.S." Showcasing his diversity, Counsellor rides an excellent roots riddim on "Image of the Most High," and even slows things down with an ardent love song on "It's About Time." Mr. Lynx, DJ Counsellor and St. Matthew deliver a great new release, further establishing their places as some of Gospel Reggae's top artists. With this triple threat you just can't go wrong! Pick up this CD today and get ready to feel some hardcore Kingdom Vibrations! SHOP NOW --> http ://www.gospelreggae.com 2>. I wanted to write and give you another update on the recording of the next Christafari album. Almost all the tracking is done and the end is finally in sight! It has been a whole lot of work over the last four months since I started tracking for the album. We have already finished all instrumentation with the exception of a little percussion. We are over half way done with recording the vocals and background vocals for the project. But I can't take a sigh of relief quit yet. I still have to fly out Ac e Winn to sing on a few songs and am currently trying to get artists like Troy Anthony, Koen Duncan, Mr. Lynx, Sheldon Blackman and Kevin Kinsella to join me on some key tracks. Will you pray that this goes through smoothly? Avion Blackman, Sherwin Gardner and 'Imisi have already recorded lead parts for the album and I hope to have a few more guest appearances to complete the project! In our last e-mail update we requested donations to help cover the recording expenses and help pay for the horn players. The response has been positive so far and we have raised a total of $1,884 in donations towards Christafari's next CD! We would like thank the Musgrave, Curran, Trott, Maldonado, Gayle, Bright, Scott, Janicki, Cook, Cumby-Olsen, Blizzard, Macdonald, Erickson, Heston, Sefiane, Freeman, Carter, Morrison and Mohr families for their generous support and kind letters. To show our appreciation, we will include you in the credits of the album and you will be the firs t to get a pre-release of this highly anticipated release! Once we finish tracking vocals, guest vocals and overdubs we begin the painstaking process of mixing and mastering. However, we cannot finish this recording without your prayers and continued support. Please pray for our finances. We cannot cover our essential costs (such as mastering and airline flights) without raising a minimum of $3,000. This means that we still need to raise another $1,116 in support. Please ask that God will continue to provide for us as we do His work. Given our present financial situation, instead of digging ourselves into greater debt to cover these necessary costs, we humbly ask the rest of you to lend a helping hand. To show our appreciation, If you send a donation (of any size) we will make sure to thank you in the album credits and give you an advanced copy of the release! If you have ever been blessed by the ministry of Christafari, and enriched by ou r recordings, please consider blessing us with a monetary love-gift of any size. This request is for those that have been blessed by our music throughout the years and wish to bless us back. I am writing this for those who will buy our CD anyways--and humbly asking that you send a donation in advance so that we can complete the recording. When it's finished we'll send you a copy of the album for free! Your generous donation will be greatly appreciated and enable the ministry of Christafari to press on. Our need is real and immediate. Simply make your check out to "Christafari" and please make sure your name and address are written clearly on your check. Then mail it to: Christafari 1942 259th Place Lomita, CA 90717 USA For your donation, you will get the assurance that you are blessing a ministry that is making a difference in this dark world. You will also get a huge thanks from Christafari and we will make sure that you receive a special advanced copy of this album long before anyone else has heard it! Thanks for your generosity. May you be showered with all the spiritual blessings from above! Swimming in His Grace, Mark Mohr Christafari www.christafari.com 4>. Jim Abbott | Orlando Sentinel Pop Music Critic Posted October 19, 2006 Mikey Dread is one of reggae's most enthusiastic and articulate ambassadors, spreading the word on radio, in documentaries and on stage. Dread's recording career dates to influential work with the Clash on its 1980 Sandinista! album and includes production duties for a diverse list of acts ranging from Jamaican dancehall icon Sugar Minott to Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds. It continues with Backstage Pass, an album Mikey Dread just completed in Jamaica. "Everything was done manually," says Dread, who performs Friday at the Social. "No computerized drums. Just drums, bass, horns, backing vocals, percussion and guitars." For his studio band, Dread enlisted old-school reggae players such as drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Larry Silvera. He expects the album to be ready for release by early next year on his label, Dread at the Controls. "That way, I have more control over it," he says. "I don't want to take it to somebody who don't know nothing about reggae and makes me sound like Sean Paul. If I want to sell it for $10 or $12, nobody can force me to sell it for $15." Keeping a clear focus on reggae's identity is a lifetime mission for Jamaican-born Dread. He doesn't play Florida much, although he lives here, he says, because so many promoters know so little about reggae's roots. People are more knowledgeable on the West Coast, the Midwest and in Mexico, Argentina or Europe, he says. Too often, the business is "infested with promoters who want to pay $500 for a band, and we don't play for that kind of crowd. We play reggae music on a professional platform. "A lot of these promoters, they only know the Bob Marley family and think that's where it stops. There are many more names and faces who have never gotten the wide exposure, the opportunity or the access to deliver their message." Not that Dread is critical of Paul's commercial success, or the buzz behind other dancehall stars. Still, he thinks that a part of reggae's original spirit has been lost in translation. "Maybe they are not following our tradition, but they are still making a name for themselves with MTV," says Dread, who lives in Gainesville, where his wife is attending dental school at the University of Florida. "It's not the same class of reggae, and the people trying to push reggae now are not people who know the bottom line. They just want to dance, jump up and down and be crazy." True reggae, he says, embodies a spirit of nonviolence as well as cultural and racial diversity. For two decades, Dread has spread that message on radio shows in Jamaica and Great Britain and on BBC programs such as Rockers Roadshow and Deep Roots Music. In the 1990s, he hosted shows on AM radio stations in Miami, while earning degrees in music and video production from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and in international communication from Lynn University in Boca Raton. "I used my time to educate myself on a different platform," he says. "In the United States, there are more opportunities than I had in Jamaica, so I thought maybe I'd use some of those on an academic level to better myself. Learn as much as I can while I can do it." Ultimately, Dread wants to take his knowledge and pass it along to future generations. He wants to spread his appreciation for influential Jamaican stars such as King Tubby, a pioneer of dub music who died at age 48 in 1989. "My ambition is to preserve reggae music in a visual domain. A lot of reggae artists have come and died and nobody has ever interviewed them. I want to do something so that people 20 years later, 100 years later, can say this is what they said." Want to pay special attention to thank a living giant. Third World Band An avid fan since the first notes of Stevie Wonder produced "Try Jah Love" had come into rotation song by song in my factory worker's bungalo I shared with primo trumpeter Deb Koch. Had just moved to Winston - Salem, NC from Raleigh (1yr) to study oboe with Vance Reger and John Mack at the North Carolina School of the Arts where I was pursuing a degree in Oboe and English Horn. Had started my degree at Indiana University School of Music but soon returned to Boston University School of Music to continue studying with Second Oboist of the famous Boston Symphony Orchestra and Principal Oboist of Boston Pops Orchestra John Holmes. I wanted to be the greatest oboist that ever lived and was likely a difficult student aksing so many questions but kept returning for more! The oboe is such a demandingly difficult horn to produce decent notes on and then you have these fussy little mouthpieces that respond to the slightest squeeze and can crack on you at a moments' notice thus pitching you a quarter tone lower than the rest of the sometimes 100 plus people waiting in the orchestra alone. It was a very interesting and fun life, one I will forever cherish. I immediately got lots of work as soon as I reached town! I was playing with Piedmont Chamber Ochestra, Winston - Salem Symphony, North Carolina School of the Arts Premeire Arts Quintet which toured public schools from its Kaleidesope Office. Toured to Agusta Opera Company and played the Winston- Salem and Raleigh Littele Theaters. Also managed the Winston Salem Youth Symphony and the ushers at the Stephens Center for the Arts and played concerts with some of the most uniquely talented students that attended NCSA! If I sound like I'm pitching North Carolina School of the Arts. I am! They have scholarships for lots of international students and diverse students as it is a school within the UNC system. Extending its courses far beyond when I attended. Today, the school boasts an award winning Film program and in many areas is offering doctorates. Starting from High School, North Carolina School of the Arts has become a preparatory school for many undergrads and graduates of the most sought after music conservatories, Julliard, Curtis, New England Conservatory and the like. Dance companies and theater companies scout the campus often! Found a cool Reggae station in Winston-Salem and would tune in while making reeds for an upcoming concert. The messages of Bob Marley, the execution of Third World, Stevie Wonder, and soon Steel Pulse grabbed me like a magnet. So many of the youth I taught were later going to make a choice whether to make it as a civilian or a soldier. Unfortunately, while public schools were shorted of music budget funding, military bands were getting padding galore to attract the very very best in instrumental music playing fit to be heard by any presidential dignitaries on the red carpet. America loves brass bands and uniforms! Well, this music and message continued throughout each and every album and eventually I was facing a rather complex group of youngsters on the quaint idyllic Caribbean island of St. John. I was able to use tracks from these artists' music to help the students keep positive despite messages of gross negligence by those in control who always had excuses why they couldn't do more. That's ok for the common person but they wanted teachers to believe it. You forgot, we hear every excuse when it comes to getting homework in on time, we have to wade through the quagmire of what is real and what is 'just a lamebrained excuse'. I would also bring local calypso music with good messages as well. I would meet so many artists when I caught the ferry with my fellow teachers to St. Thomas to our union and district conferences and meetings. St.John is sort of a 'step child' and those in charge must fight tooth and nail to keep funds promised flowing so programs aren't cut as they often are. I have always loved teaching because being surrounded by an entire staff of individuals who value safety first for children is the best place to be when the rest of the world is at war. Gandhi said, "If we are to attain peace, we must begin with the children." Children cannot accept or defend war. Ask any? It is adults who impose this behavior despite what a teacher teaches about how to get along and be healthy especially on the playground. A child who eventually learns his only survival is to kill someone learns young where its next meal comes from. Is given a name, rank and serial number. A clean pressed uniform, three squares and classroom education beyond belief! Well, whatever one chooses is what they are. Children in inner cities have difficult choices and little opportunity and must rise up above the others. To disuade from the material and social gains of joining up and enlisting is a tough challenge. If no children sign up, who will fight the war no one knows why we are fighting? UB 40's "What Are We Fighting For" carries a strong message. This week, my Kindergarteners loved dancing and singing along with Joe and Marcia on "Boys and Girls" (Roots Combination) and Joe's "Family" (Shanachie) songs. Enough on children, but it's Elementary. Joe Higgs was the teacher to Bob Marley. Marcia Higgs, Joe's daughter spent most of her adolescence and was winning award after award in her hometown of Kingston, Jamaica. Today, she boasts performances with the greatest names in Reggae and has managed to record while raising children as well. She has teamed up with a band from Boston named the I.R.S. Band - The International Reggae Steppers and they'll be performing at Bill's Bar October 29. A show you mustn't miss, they'll also be at Western Front in Inman Square on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 25. Joe Higgs felt Marcia was the greatest, he also had partnered with another Maria, Macia Griffiths and they released quite few hits as well. Marcia is organizing the First Annual Joe Higgs Music Awards on December 8, 2006. She needs the help of the Reggae Music Award to recognize the great contributions his consistent dedication and sacrifice created. Joe opened doors for Reggae that hadn't exisited. Joe saw the talent of Bob Marley, already himself managed by Edward Seaga, Joe was able to connect Bob to a community of support. Seeing the struggle the Marley Family has had to give recognition to Bob. We mustn't forget Bob's greatest teacher, and mine as well, Mr. Joe Higgs. When Third World had asked me to blow my oboe to tribute Joe Higgs I was honored. Ironically, it was on "There's A Reward" to be released on their upcoming CD, "Black, Gold and Green" on Shanachie label. As always, Third World spotlights the who's who of Reggae, Beres Hammond, Wayne Marshall, Sly Dunbar, and your truly Anna Fisher. To be able to share this story with the students who I used to play "Keep Your Head To The Sky" and "Take This Song", "Riddim Haffi Rule" or "It's Not Too Late" in my regular course of study with my students over the past 23 years. Most of all, there are few artists I feel I can endorse one hundred percent of what is being said. That this talented band did what they promised, featured me on this song only to later receive a Grammy nomination for Reggae Album of the Year was simply the icing on the cake, Everyone! Having the opportunity to tour with and record with these warriors for the cause of family, children and more enlightened consciousness than the rest I am forever grateful. To see them continue to perform at premium levels night after night on the USA Jamaica Sunplash Tour and continue to engage their audience year after year for 33 years now to be exact. This band deserves much credit. Not a few Grammy nominations but 10 now is something to be noted and to see them never discourage from coming out with more insightful lyrics, melodies and harmonies appropriate for all ages and lifestyles makes this the number one band in my book. Additionally, their youth have managed to earn nominations AND won as well. Richie's eldest son Looga Man (Ayun Daley) DJs with Sean Paul and Cat Coore' son Shiah Coore played that haunting and penetrating bass line on Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley's Smash Hit Album, "Welcome To Jamrock" winning a Reggae Grammy in his early 20's! Marcia Higgs is calling all who would like to see more done carry on the vision of Joe Higgs to contact her. She grew up at hope Road alongside Bob, Rita, Cindy Breakspeare (Damian's mom and former Miss World) as well as Judy Mowatt, Maria Griffiths, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh and the many supporters and foes to the Tuff Gong Camp. Her sister married Wailers Bassplayer Aston 'Familyman' Barrett and her nephew Aston Jr. is recording with Julian Marley in Florida this year at just 16 years! Her two daughters Marsha and Jobeth have proven themselves to be strong vocalist lyricists and the long list of peope who's influenced with her dynamically riveting sound needs to be witnessed by all! Please contact marciahiggs@yahoo.com to get she and the IRS Band along with special guests to your local venue. The reviews have been rave and the people are demanding more and more! The track she performed on my album Yin Yang" titled "Hip Hop Hooray Oh" is now available for listening or downloading at: http://www.soundclick.com/annafisherandjawgehughes The picture was taken at her dad's Service of Thanksgiving when we paid tribute to Joe in Kingston at the St. Andrews Anglican Church January 2000 following Joe's passing in Dec 1999. I feel blessed to have known Joe but more blessed to know his daughter Marcia. I feel she can bring Reggae back on track and is the most qualified candiate to do it. No, this is not a political rally it is just one sister sharing the good news about another who is truly making a difference and sharing the love as Joe Higgs and Bob Marley would've wanted it done.
