Spring 2007
Lionšs Roar
Greetings from Mystic Lion Studio. Wešre getting ready for our festival
season, with new shirt designs, new stage backdrops, and new festivals.
Wešll be in the Sierra foothills for an Earth Day celebration at Tuolumne, California on Friday April 20th. Wešll have a booth and our art will be flying on the stage. Our friends Marty Dread from Hawaii and Native Elements from San Francisco will be performing along with many other great bands.
On June 2nd and 3rd we have two festivals to attend. The Summer Arts and
Music Festival will be in Benbow, California, at the State Park. Wešll have a booth and the Solar Stage will be displaying Mystic Lion backdrops. Also that weekend wešll be back in Tuolumne, California for the One World Festival, with a booth and the main stage backdrop.
The One World Festival in Tuolumne is a new festival that is free during the day, featuring dancers and musicians from around the world. At night it moves indoors for a reggae celebration with Marty Dread, Native Elements, Soul Majestic, and more wonderful performers.
Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in Boonville, California, from June
22-24, will be flying our flags throughout the fairgrounds. The small stage under the trees will be ornamented by a Mystic Lion backdrop, and wešll be sharing a booth with PURE Anywear.
Wešre continuing our team work with PURE this year, and developing new
designs on hemp shirts. Look for our new ŗsky gallery˛, on the top of the PURE booth, featuring light-sensitive flags and banners.
A special ŗthank-you and mahalo˛ to all our Hawaiian friends who came out for our shows in Hawaii. Some of the best reggae crowds are in the islands.
Also a big shout out to Native Elements, my first band client when I started out years ago. They made their first trip to Hawaii and put on a fabulous show, premiering some incredible new songs.

REGGAE UPDATE
The Beat, volume 26 no 1, 2007,
page 12
by Chuck Foster
There are American veterans as well and The Ark Band definitely qualifies as
one of the premier stateside
reggae outfits. ALL THINGS CONSIDERED ( Ark Band ) is, with the exception of
the opening cut
"Warriors" and "official" closer "Climb aboard the Ark" ( both what Frank
Zappa used to call "advertisements for the band" ), an album of cover tunes
including Peter Tosh's "African." "Land Down Under" from Men at Work and
Lord Creator's "Kingston Town." That the band can move so easily from a
reggae version of the Eagles' "Hotel California" to Alvin Marcellin's "Last
Dance" shows versatility, something The Ark Band has plenty of.
Their cover of "The Way You Do the Things You Do" sounds so much like the
UB40 version you wouldn't think
these guys were from Ohio and their cover of "Electric Avenue" might make
you think it 'is' Eddy Grant version
-- until ( in both cases ) they jump into the rap section. Hip-hop and rock
are major elements -- and rightly so, this is an American reggae band--but
The Ark Band holds to a roots vibe throughout. This is made especially clear
on two bonus closing dubs ( of the two originals ). Three stripes.
Rootsmon Bird ( R.A.W. 36 ) in Lansing, Michigan at WLNZ 89.7 FM has given The Ark Band's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED a big 'thumbs up' as he has been listening a lot to it.
Subsequently he has booked The Ark Band to play at his festival this year in august in Lansing, Michigan.
( Big up Bird!!!!!!!!!!)
best,
one love one peace

Subject: BAMBU STATION "FLOWERED INTO MAGNIFICENCE"
Date: Thursday, April 12, 2007 11:33 PM
(Washington, DC) Mt. Nebo Records / 202-321-2263 /
contactus@mtneborecords.com
Leading entertainment media guide ALLMUSIC.com recently featured critical reviews of Bambu Station's new album "Break The Soil" and their award-winning release "One Day." Both reviews were written by Jo-Ann Greene and are included here for your convenience. Source articles can be viewed at the links at the end of the reviews.
Bambu Station is a 5 member roots reggae band from St. Croix and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
"Break The Soil" (Mt. Nebo Records) / www.AllMusic.com / Jo-Ann Greene
"Who doesn't adore this band? For a decade now the Virgin Island based
Bambu Station has been pumping out uplifting reggae music for the massive, garnering a world wide following in the process.
Break the Soil is thegroup's fifth full-length, and a splendid one at that, book-ended by a pair of superb unity numbers, "Brotherhood", which opens the set in prime Bambu fashion and "Injoy", which closes it in classic roots reggae style.
Both showcase Jalani Horton, the band's lead singer/lyricist, who is not just one of the best composers on today's scene, but one of the most literate, thoughtful, and thought-provoking period. His messages are clear, concise, extremely well reasoned, and inevitably persuasive. Horton's incredibly fresh takes on the well-worn unity theme is impressive, but "New World Order" is awesome, an absolutely inspired dissection of the war on terror and the terrorism that provoked it.
Equally heavy hitting is "Who (Litany of Liars)" revolving around colonialism past and present, while "Sing
Upright" makes it personal, chiding those reggae stars who would sell their mothers to get on MTV. "Chance to Grow" connects the two, bemoaning the loss of indigenous culture and the rise of ignorance that helps lead the youth astray, whilst counseling a better way, the latter further expostulated on "Sense Enemy".
Babies having babies, women who need to learn self-respect, those who talk a good game, but whose actions consistently defy their words, all receive lessons from Bambu's life coach. Of course, Jah is praised many times over, His munificence noted with thanks, and the path He wishes us to walk beautifully illuminated. On "I Remembah", Horton
recalls his happy childhood and the life lessons imparted by his much adored Granny, who so obviously laid the foundation for the man he has become.
This lovely number, moves Bambu into new, jazz-flecked territory, just one of a number of excursions into new musical lands the band undertakes. An airy flute haunts the intro to "Beloved People", "Enemy" is stripped to the musical bone, guesting Reemah stamps her imprimatur on "Grow," sweet harmonies echo across "Liars," classic brass-splashed roots send "Bird's I View" flying, soul licks round I Sing Prayses", a hint of funk flickers round "Brotherhood", while Tuff Lion's fabulously versatile guitar is evident across the set. Break the Soil? surely the band did that long ago, the musical seed, too, was already planted, and with this album the group has now flowered into full magnificence."
"One Day" (Mt. Nebo Records) / www.AllMusic.com / Jo-Ann Greene
"One-drop rhythms are flooding back into fashion in the dancehalls, while consciousness continues its inexorable rise, so few bands should be better placed to be swept up in the cultural wave's crest than Bambu Station.
Unfortunately, the group hail from the wrong Caribbean island, the Virgin ones, not Jamaica, otherwise they'd already be hailed as the new Wailers.
So Station may have their work cut out for them, but there's no doubt
they're up to the challenge, brimming as they are with self-confidence and a determination to deliver their message and music to the world. Working out of their own studio, this self- contained unit writes, records, mixes, produces and releases their own exceptional material; and in that respect Bambu are actually closer in spirit to the early British roots reggae scene, than the Jamaican.
They too have been inspired by the originators, even as other influences
have left their mark, giving the group a unique roots style. If one needs a
comparison, very early Steel Pulse springs to mind, there's the same
laid-back atmospheres and bubbly rhythms, counter-pointed by tough themes
and extremely sharp, resonating lyrics.
Opening with a sobering look at the divided and diseased state of the world
and closing with a lesson in righteous life that emphasizes the importance
of the individual, One Day offers critiques on virtually every subject
worthy of attention. Violence, war, the divisions the drive them both, man's
responsibilities, forgiveness and correspondingly lack of mercy, religion
and politics all inform Jalani Horton's astute and insightful lyrics, which
continually give new impetus to these much discussed issues.
Along the way, there's a lovely homage to Malcolm X's widow Betty
Sha[z]bazz that doubles as a call for female dignity, and a powerful,
heartfelt tribute to Amadou Diallo, the innocent immigrant who died in a
hail of police bullets in New York City.
It's easy to lose one's self In Horton's impassioned performance and words,
but his bandmates are just as worthy of note, creating blissful backings
that effortlessly bubble along behind him. The heavy-hitting "Gunsmoke"
evokes all the power of Steel Pulse's classic "Handsworth Revolution", "Pass
It" captures all the incendiary fire of the roots rockers age, while the
haunting "One Day" hints at The Specials at their moodiest. But these are
merely points of reference, numbers like the anthemic "Fire" and the
mesmerizing "Move On" confound any easy comparisons, bringing the glory of
the roots age into modern times. This is a fabulous album that demands a
place of pride in every cultural fan's collection."

Keep On (Game of Life) by Jamaican singer/songwriter Cezar has
recently been awarded second place in the finals of the ISC
(International Songwriting Competition) in the category of World Music.
Cezar told 'REGGAE VIBES,' 'To have been selected out of 15,000 songs
is one of the greatest achievements of my career. I entered only this
song and I'm happy to know that the special feeling I have for the
song is shared by others.'As second place winner in the category,
Cezar collects US $2,000.
Cezar continues, 'I can safely say that from the day the song was
penned I thought it was special. I felt a diffeent kind of inspiration.'
Cezar's sound is described as a fusion of musical influences that
balances his pop and r&b-infused vocal style and guitar riffs with
reggae and dancehall beats. He was born to musically inclined parents
Rupert and Sonia Cunningham, cofounders of London-based reggae labels
Ashanti & Bamboo Records.
In 2003, his first release Sexyways on the Greensleeves Records
compilation was put into rotation on BBC radio's reggae & dancehall
show in the UK. His lilting ballad Take The Fall is now broadcast
globally on BETJ. You've been listening to his award winning song 'Keep On.'
In our extended sound bites section this week, first
Jamaican singer, Courtney John's music video for his current
single Sometimes has now been added and is in rotation on
International networks VH1 Soul, BETJ, and MTV's Tempo, while in
Jamaica the video is currently in high rotation on top cable stations.
The ladies seem to relate to this song well.
His previous music video, a collaboration with Jovi Rockwell,
Hey will be added this month to MTV Demand.
Bob Marley's 'One Love' was sung by the American Idol contestants as Ford
used the song in one of their tv commercials.
Stanley Beckford, the legendary mento artiste from Jamaica died on
Friday March 30.
The Woman of Great Esteem Organization has honored Ms. Patricia Chin,
Co-Founder of VP Records and Founder of Riddim Driven Clothing, for
her admired contributions. She, along with nine other women, were the
chosen few who were presented with the Emerald Award on Saturday,
March 31 in Brooklyn.
The Emerald Awards Ceremony recognizes women for their astonishing
achievements and dedication in a multi-cultural society.
The event was held at the Brooklyn Museum's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor
Auditorium. Keith David, movie actor, is the honorary chairperson and
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke was the keynote speaker at the gala.
In our new releases this week from out of Germany on the Wobbly Web
label is a great dub album from a band called the Abassi All Stars. I
am not the not the biggest fan of dub but this is good stuff. A little
more uptempo, still spacey with sampled lyrics & positive this is the
dub I'm made of. VP Records release Lady Saw's latest 'Walk Out.'
Typical but good stuff...that's if you like the Rude lady of
dancehall. In any case, always entertaining. They also release in
their Riddim Driven series the popular & hard 'Power Cut.' Not for the
lame or soft dancehall fan goes well with the SAW. Lastly from VP it's 'YOW
Street Gospel 4.' A tough cd hat focuses on the word of Jesus inna
dancehall style. Great production & talented artists. In fact this
weeks Selector's Choice' is one of Sherwin Gardener's songs. M Big
records distributed by CED Entertainment, releases the 'Shoalin
Temple' riddim. A little different sounding riddim but nothing special.
Each week we ask a trivia question first last week we asked,
The John Peel Sessions were big in Europe Clint
Eastwood & General Saint appeared on that as well as Radio One in concert
session, who were the only other 2 reggae groups to do so? Aswad & Bob
Marley & the Wailers.
This week we ask, the dj Clint Eastwood was the younger brother of
which other dj?
In case you don't know. we will have all that & more on next weeks
edition....
