Am super busy at this end. SOJA (Soldiers Of Jah Army) returned to Guam this past week, and even went to some of the other Pacific islands in the area for concerts. Here's their itinerary: Jan 21 Cultural Center, Koror, PALAU Jan 22 Cultural Center, Koror, PALAU Jan 26 Hilton Tree Bar, Tumon, GUAM Jan 27 Fiesta Resort, SAIPAN Jan 28 Guerrero Field, Paseo, GUAM I was not able to make the concerts in Palau, since I do need to work once in a while ;-) but I did go to the 3 concerts in Guam and Saipan. As expected, the reception was amazing! SOJA played all the local favorites, plus two new songs! It's been great hanging out with the SOJA crew, even after such a short time since their last visit in June. The guys will be heading out tomorrow (Weds) for their Feb 1st gig in San Diego, and then Roger Steffens will be arriving on Thurs for a week-long visit. I've got him super-booked with a press conference on Friday as well as doing his presentation "The Life Of Bob Marley" for the kids at my school that evening at 7 pm. On Saturday, he will do a public show at 6 pm for Guam's 2007 Bob Marley Birthday Bash put on by yours truly and my radio co-host, "Ital Art" Chan (#1880). After a 2 hour presentation there will be a question and answer period to be followed by performances from two of Guam's most upful and righteous Reggae bands, Fanai Tafari and Kaya. On Sunday, Roger will visit 97.5 FM to appear on Nyah Joe Cruz's "Island Stylin' Reggae Show" from noon til 6 pm. Depending on ticket sales for the Sat. event, Roger has agreed to do a second version of his show as well on Sunday evening. We've also got him lined up to do DJ Q's "Mid-day Barbeque" on Bob's birthday Feb 6th from noon-1 pm, where he wiill feature his very rarest material on cassette tape. And on Weds, Feb 7th, Roger will join Ital Art and me on Weds' "R.A.W. REGGAE" on KPRG 89.3 FM. now expanded to 3 hours, from 9 pm til midnite. I am still trying to salvage the R.A.W. database after my recent computer crash, but have not had much time to devote to that. I apologize for any delays as a result. In my recent mailing to members who renewed, I may have inadvertently inserted identical R.A.W.sters in some envelopes. We ended up with three extra NUMERICAL R.A.W.sters after a R.A.W. posse meeting spent stuffing envelopes.. So if you got two of the same type of R.A.W.ster, just let me know and I will get that fixed asap. I AM now able to access my email via the web, but have not yet gotten a direct email connection at home. Please continue to send items for "Wha Gwaan in R.A.W.?" to Eric (#1418) at hods@triad.rr.com But be assured that if you send them directly to me, they will eventually get included. There just might be a day or two delay. I guess that's it for now. Busy busy busy for the next ten days or so, then back to just busy busy after that. But doing Jah Works and loving every intense minute! Ever forward Tom REGGAE AMBASSADORS WORLDWIDE #33 [3] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From: [REGGAE AMBASSADORS WORLDWIDE #5] Subject: "Reggae Legend Birthday Bash" Date: Saturday, January 27, 2007 11:24 AM Ambassador David's Productions 269-271-5219 "Your Caribbean Music Connection" Reggae Music "Special Music for Special People" Rastaman Nane *Just added to "Reggae Legend Birthdat Bash" an special guest appearance by David Asher founder and lead vocalist of the Process Reggae band. After a life-changing conversion to Christ, this "Small Horse Woman," (best known for her Man fi get "Kuff" song and "Fresh Out of The Pack" release, 1989), is still as fresh and relevant as ever. After making a few appearances on various compilation albums by the likes of Prodigal Son and Katsjam, Shelly has finally launched her own New York based label with impressive results. On "Souljahs For Christ," the labels debut project, Yankee B (featured on Raggamuffin Hip Hop 1 and 2), Sistar Roze, and legendary dancehall deejay Shelly Thunder (featured on Yow 3 and Roots Gospel Vol. 1) bring nuff' dan cehall vibes with one clear inspiration: Jesus Christ! With 18 songs, "Souljahs For Christ," is packed with more than enough tracks to satisfy fans of Dancehall Gospel. Yankee B always rises to the occasion, and his contributions here are no exception. Tunes like "Abraham" and "Marry Her" exemplify his talents over both roots and dancehall riddims. Yankee B's live version of "Be Like Christ," is easily the most exciting song on the entire project! Shelly Thunder and Sistar Roze also represent with big tunes such as "Salvation Story," "The Race," "Hallelujah," and "Gospel Medley." Also featured on this project are Anthony Wright with "Jesus," Dunamis with "Him Nuh Believe Say," Nathaniel with "Jesus Is On My Mind," and Joan Myers with "Calvary." "Souljahs For Christ," is a great new release for dancehall fans, and s hould satisfy roots lovers as well. As to be expected, the messages are always Christ centered and touch on topics that are relevant to today's church. Grab your copy today to get the newest songs from these excellent artists! Over the years, the Washington, D.C. music scene has become best known for its hardcore (Minor Threat) and go-go (Trouble Funk) alumni, but as evidenced by the great Bad Brains, reggae has been represented as well. SOJA has risen to the forefront, picking up right where the Brains left off – creating their own blend of conscious roots music entwined with the traditional rhythms of reggae, it “comes across with passion and depth.” (Washington Post ’06) That said, SOJA is not that easy to define. Although they are rooted in reggae, they are not limited to it; their fan-base reflects this with a very diverse population. The music includes and embraces all walks of life - it has no prejudice – it is for everyone. The band grew up listening to reggae, hip-hop, and rock. In their sound, reggae became the predominate influence because it is dedicated to a real message and promotes revolution. The group, which includes a pair of lead singers who also pull double duty - Jacob Hemphill (guitar) and Bob Jefferson (bass) – as well as Patrick O’Shea on keyboard, percussionist Ken Brownell, and drummer Ryan Berty, originally came together in 1997. Since 2000, the quintet has issued three full length albums and one EP – their latest, ‘Get Wiser,’ is their third for the group’s own label, Innerloop. Hemphill explains the meaning of the album’s title. “The new album is called ‘Get Wiser’ – that’s the idea. We as a society tend to have blinders on. We are trying to uplift peoples’ consciousness by breaking down what makes us blind. To do this, we got to bring back truth. People get wiser.” “Every song is different of course.” Hemphill continues, “I found music to be a way to express myself - through my life I’ve never been able to express myself well in conversations, but I can do it through music. It’s like my way to talk.” Ever the road warriors (SOJA averages 150 gigs per year), the group will be supporting their latest release with a healthy amount of live dates this year on the “Get Wiser Tour”. With such a list of accumulated live dates, a specific high point is hard to pin down, but Brownell remembers a particular performance. “One of the shows that remains in the front of my mind was playing in Guam for the first time for nearly 6,000 fans. That was an amazing experience.” With SOJA calling their own shots, ‘Get Wiser’ proves that the band’s message and music will only continue to grow stronger with each successive release. In support of their latest album, “Get Wiser”, SOJA is embarking on a journey around the world. Go to www.sojamusic.com for more details! This show will be a preview of the latest songs & sets being prepared for Europe & Festival appearances and several players will be added to the bill: keyboardists, sax, Dub Station's new engineer "the Dubbist," and hopefully more surprises will be in store, including the guest appearance of growing singer-songwriter sensation Tom O'Brien, soon to have his own MySpace site, and solo, duo, and trio performances around town.
