New CD: SHERWIN GARDNER'S "ELEVATION" ARTIST: Sherwin Gardner ALBUM: Elevation GENRE: Roots / Caribbean Praise / Dancehall / Ragga Hip Hop / Ragga Soca / Gospel LABEL: Flow City Records PRICE: Only $13.97 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: Five albums into an already stellar career, Gospel/Reggae/Dancehall heavyweight Sherwin Gardner delivers what will surely become his most critically acclaimed and widely distributed album to date. On "Elevation," Sherwin's sixth album, he fuses Caribbean rhythms with black American praise and worship: Sherwin himself calls it a "Perfect fusion of (his) old and new styles." Indeed, old Sherwin Gardne r fans will recognize his vocal delivery and melodic ideas, yet many won't be prepared for his slick new production and heavy black gospel influences. There's no need to worry, however, as this album represents a strong step in a new direction that is sure to place Gardner in the upper echelon of the Gospel music industry. One of the Caribbean's most successful producers, Sherwin utilizes his production talents to the fullest, producing and writing every single track on the album. From the urban dancehall opener "Claim It," to the hip-hop/dancehall/pop hybrid "Elevation," Sherwin proves that he's been hard at work refining his talents and keeping his vision centered on God. In an excellent combination of gospel, hip-hop and dancehall, "My Provider," serves as an inspiring anthem of dependence on God. quot;Real Vibes," is a heavy roots/culture song with an incredible hook. Other songs such as "Deep Meditation," "Highest Praise," and "Praises Never Stop," are perfect examples of Sherwin's unique new sound. It's easy to see that "Elevation" is sure to push Gospel and Gospel Reggae music to higher heights than ever before. With some of the best packaging, production, and songwriting we've ever seen here at GospelReggae.com this CD is the complete package- unique, inspiring, and innovative! The first REGGAE ACADEMY AWARDS show is being planned for February 2008 in Kingston in a performing arts center. Special guest speaker at the media reception was Prime Minister of Jamaica,Portia Simpson Miller. The efforts of the Recording Industry Association of Jamaica/RIAJam in establishing the REGGAE ACADEMY should be applauded and given full support by persons involved in the Reggae music industry.Upon its incorporation in 2003 as a Jamaican registered non profit association, the board of directors of the RIAJam lead by its chairman Cleveland 'Clevie' Browne identified the staging of an international music award befitting of the worldwide acclaim of Reggae music as one of its primary objectives. In order to realize this objective the RIAJam moved to first establish the REGGAE ACADEMY as a division of RIAJam charged with responsibility for dealing with matters pertaining to awards, categories, nominations and voting for awards winners. The REGGAE ACADEMY is now accepting applications from songwriters, vocalists, musicians, producers, engineers, label owners, media representatives, sound system operators, agents and artist managers from around the world who are involved in the production and promotion of Reggae and Dancehall recordings. As is the case with the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/NARAS, which is the body responsible for the GRAMMYS, membership to the REGGAE ACADEMY will attract an annual membership fee. Registered members of the REGGAE ACADEMY will have the right and privilege to participate in the process of submitting entries, as well as voting for the nominees and winners in each category. The REGGAE ACADEMY AWARDS will be the final event in a series of music business activities over a three-day period that will attract Reggae music performers, producers, record company executives and media from all over the world. Lloyd Stanbury, chairman of the Reggae Academy, pointed out to an audience which filled and overflowed from the Club House, that there were three entities at work. The Recording Industry Association of Jamaica (RIAJam) is an organisation formed in 2003, of which the Reggae Academy is a division. And it is the Reggae Academy which will run the awards.Stanbury said there will be about 15 awards in a reggae segment, 13 in dancehall and seven in gospel, all to be decided by voting members of the academy from nomination to final decision, while the public will decide on the recipients of two People's Choice Awards. "The Reggae Academy Awards is based on a transparent, participatory industry structure. Through this structure we enable the members of the industry to participate ... At the end of the day we will find the awardees to be adjudged the best by their peers ... It is also designed to promote standards, higher standards, creative and business," Stanbury said. These Awards are a priority Director of the St. Lucia-based Caribbean Drug Abuse Research Institute, Dr. Marcus Day, has called on law enforcement authorities to refuse permission for Jamaican dancehall artiste Sizzla to perform here at a May 5 show. Dr. Day, in a letter to Police Commissioner Ausbert Regis, called forthe artiste to be prevented from performing here because of what he said was his violent, anti-gay lyrics. He also lashed out at Jamaica for what he claimed was its culture of violence which is being imported into St. Lucia. Dr. Day requested the commissioner to pay particular attention to this "delicate legal matter" and called on the police to warn the promoters and producers of the show that they might be guilty of aiding and abetting criminal offences by giving a platform to Sizzla. Robert Randolph & The Family Band is a multicultural American funk and soul band composed of Robert Randolph, Marcus Randolph (drums), Danyel Morgan (bass), and Jason Crosby (organ). Frontman Robert Randolph was trained as a pedal steel guitarist in the House of God Church, Keith Dominion, and makes prominent use of the instrument in the band's music. Randolph a native of Maplewood, New Jersey began playing the steel guitar in the House of God Church, which used steel guitars in worship services. Sacred Steel as it is called is used in many African American Pentecostal style churches and while playing at a sacred steel convention in Florida, Randolph was discovered. The group's sound is inspired by successful 1970s funk bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone , another multicultural band comprised of former members of the Church of God in Christ. Randolph himself has also stated that his main influence as a guitarist is Stevie Ray Vaughan. The first Robert Randolph & the Family Band album, Live at the Wetlands, was released in 2002. The band released their studio debut, Unclassified on August 5, 2003. They attracted the attention of Eric Clapton, and have subsequently toured as a supporting act with the British blues guitarist. Clapton also featured on the new album Colorblind on the track "Jesus is Just Alright." Before releasing albums with The Family Band, Randolph was selected by avant-jazz organist John Medeski to join him and the North Mississippi Allstars on their 2001 jam project, The Word . In September of 2003 Randolph was listed as #97 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list. In 2002, they were hired by ABC to make the network's new NBA theme song. The song, "We Got Hoops", was only used for three telecasts, though it was used throughout both the NBA and WNBA seasons during promotions for both leagues. In 2005, Randolph, along with Kirk Hammett of Metallica, guested on the song "Trinity" on Santana 's album All That I Am . The third album, Colorblind, was released October 10, 2006. The song "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" is used on many commercials for NBC. The band was contracted by ABC to perform and shoot a video for "Thrill of It" as an introduction for Saturday Night Football for six games in the 2006 season. Reggae great, Ziggy Marley is on tour in support of his release, Love Is My Religion. "This album is from my heart," says Ziggy Marley of his second solo album, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide). Embracing both the spiritual and emotional side of life, Ziggy has definitively come into his own as an artist. The twelve-track album showcases Ziggy's tightly rolled talents as a songwriter (writing all cuts), musician (playing most of the instruments) and producer (shepherding all dozen tracks, with three co-produced by Grammy winner Ross Hogarth). Written "all over the world," with some songs penned during his youth, Love Is My Religion expands upon the personal, social and political themes explored in Ziggy's debut CD, Dragonfly. Its musical center is clearly reggae, peppered by African percussion and other flavors. Opening with the subversively danceable "Into the Groove," Ziggy delves into an upbeat meditation on finding one's self. On the title track, "Love is My Religion," his message is one that "people need to hear," a unifying devotion to love that "needs to be preached in churches and mosque and synagogues." The notion of overcoming stereotypes and superstition informs the slinky "Black Cat," while the romantic "Make Some Music" finds a partner in the mid-tempo "A Lifetime." A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy first sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley, when he was ten years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae. In addition to his skills as a singer, songwriter and producer, Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children's causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other developing nations. We are bringing Clinton Fearon out in early June, along with Humble Soul from Hawaii, and Revelation from GA. Have been in touch with Clinton and Barbara, and have managed to get one jpeg of Clinton for use in advertising at this end, but our local paper does not like to use the same photo that appears on flyers, so we are looking for a couple more photos of Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band that we could use (with permission, of course), A full band shot of the current line-up would be ideal! Any one have anything out there they are willing to let us use? Also looking for a nice bio of Clinton that mentions his days with the Gladiators. Fingers crossed that someone out there has what I am looking for.
