New CD: STEFAN PENINSILYN, "THE PENINSILYN" ARTIST: Stefan Peninsilyn ALBUM: The Peninsilyn GENRE: Dancehall / Soca/Punta/Calypso / Culture LABEL: Stefan Peninsilyn RETAIL: $15.99--OUR PRICE: Only $13.97 DOWNLOAD ALBUM: $9.99 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: Just the other day I was having a casual phone conversation with one of today's popular gospel reggae artists and I asked him the same question that I consistently ask everyone in the gospel reggae scene; "Are there any new artists or albums that we may be missing here at gospel reggae." He said, "Yeah, Peninsilyn! He's the hottest new voice in gospel reggae." "Peninsula?" I inquired. "No, Peninsilyn", He insisted! "You mean like the drug Penicillin?" I asked. "Yeah but it's Peninsilyn," He repeated. I asked him to spell the na me and he was stumped but he insisted that this artist with a confusing name was the hottest thing since sliced bread. This sparked my curiosity. I eventually managed to hunt down the man who calls himself "Stefan Peninsilyn." Born Stavan White in Kingston, Jamaica I assure you that this deejay is one of the most promising new voices on the gospel reggae scene. When I first popped in the CD I was taken aback by the subdued singing intro to the first track "Rock of Ages". To be honest it's not the strongest way to kick off an album... but then it hit me! Just a little over a minute into the song the music jumps into a soca/dancehall beat and Peninsilyn the deejay grabs the microphone with unparalleled authority. With a comedic flow and unique tone he is a throwback to the golden age of dancehall by artists like Professor Nuts, Admiral Bailey or General Degree. After just three minutes I am already convinced that we have something very original h ere. This guy is BAAAD! He manages to step things up a notch with track two when he insists that we "Don't go inna the Devil bedroom!" This is an instant classic. This dancehall has no expiry date! After this Stefan raises the bar once more and blesses us with the title track "The Peninsilyn." If you aren't stuck singing this one for months on end then you need to have your hearing checked! This is such a clever song with brilliant lyrics and an unstoppable hook. From here, Stefan sings some Caribbean Gospel on "The Dream". His singing voice sounds surprisingly similar to secular sensation Sanchez. After this he is joined by the sweet vocal stylings of Pastor Philip Reid on "Backitive" sung over the traditional "Death in the Arena" riddim. This track is destined to be another timeless gospel reggae tune. Overall, this is a strong album through and through. Whether you like upbeat culture like "God A rmy" or Marley covers rewritten inna Christian style like "Lord Come" (One Love) there is something for everyone. Stand out tracks include the comedic yet sobering Dub Poetry">dub poetry of "What a Something" and "Hold My Hand", a contemporary Sean Paul-like dancehall cut produced by Dr. Dizzle that features 2nd Chance. Stand up and pay attention for there is a new voice in the gospel reggae arena that is sure to take this genre by storm. The raw talent in this cat simply cannot be ignored. With the right producer and song selection he could easily blow up like DJ Nicholas, Mr. Lynx, Sherwin or St. Matthew. It's rare that you hear new talent that is so promising. By your copy today and find out what all the buzz is about! SHOP NOW --> http://www.gospelreggae.com 4>. New CD: Isaac Blackman Presents "The Single Collective" Artist: Various Artists Album: The Single Collective Genre: Roots / Soca/Punta/Calypso / Culture Label: Jamoo GoodNews Ltd. RETAIL: $15.99--OUR PRICE: Only $14.97 DOWNLOAD ALBUM: $9.99 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: Isaac Blackman has done it again! The founder of Jamoo Good News Studio and brainchild of JGN records has delivered yet another incredible project. This time around the hit factory that brought us the chart-topping "To The Ceiling" blesses us with a well-rounded album that features Isaac's entire stable of artists! For the most part, this album is a family affair--as are most of Blackman's productions. At the core it is Jamoo and Soca, two sou nds pioneered by Isaac's father, the late Ras Shorty I. But there are other key elements incorporated on this project such as reggae, pop and even a slight urban flare. Essentially there is something for everyone; from the Soca of Nehilet Blackman (Isaac's Sister) to the soulful stylings of Dixie-Ann Hunte (Isaac's girlfriend) and from the rootsy tones of Marcus (his Brother-in-law) to the organic flow of Rem Bunction (his good friend). This album contains 11 singles in all. There are two singles from each of the five artists and then Isaac gets the last word with a third song. Ironically it is this final song that stands out the most on the project. "Surrender (Got It)" has an addictive hook that you will be caught singing for days. Other stand out tracks include Rem Bunction's "Endz of the Earth", Nehilet's lead single "Favour", Dixie's "Armour of Light" featuring the boisterous vocals of Koen Duncan and Marcus' ethereal quot;Money". Overall, this is Isaac's best production to date as he continues to set the bar in the Trinidadian music. This splash of sounds inevitably sends ripples to the ends of the earth. To be honest with you, some of these songs are like hand grenades, so they may have a delayed reaction for some--but they will explode! If one of the songs doesn't grab you at first listen, it will grow on you. And once the choruses set in, you won't be able to get them out of your head. This is quality soca, jamoo, pop, roots and culture all sung for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Purchase "The Singles Collective" today--You won't be disappointed! CHRISTAFARI BRAZIL UPDATE (By Mark Mohr) Brazil is going great so far! It was hectic before the trip with my toe surgery on Friday (ingrown toenail removal) a six-hour practice on Saturday and then staying up all night to prepare for being gone for three weeks. By the time we got on the plane we were exhausted and the long flight didn't help much. We ended up traveling for 24 hours straight, flying from Los Angeles to Lima, Peru and then to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Once we arrived in Brazil, Kevin McIntyre, our new booking agent/tour manager/translator greeted us with a smile. It is essential to have a translator when you visit Brazil for very few people here speak English. Kevin has proven to be a real blessing and a great addition to the Christafari crew. He also makes my job a lot easier. From Sao Paulo we drove to Sao Jose Dos Campos, a small city in the state of Sao Paulo and were greeted by a very hospitable church. Everyone is taking such good care of us here-and they feed you like kings! If you have never had a Brazilian churrascaria or some chocolate pizza, you are seriously missing out. After taking a day to overcome jetlag and catch up on not getting any sleep for 48 hours, we were finally adjusted and ready to play our first show. The concert was at a massive church in Sao Jose dos Campos, and we had no idea what to expect. We had never even heard of this city before and while the church building was huge, the pastor never officially invited the congregation to attend. Instead, he simply asked the church members to hold a 24-hour prayer vigil in preparation for the show. It worked! It turns out that the fire marshal had limited the capacity of the building to only 3,000. It filled up quickly and we were told that at least 1,000 were regrettably turned away. We'll have to play in a larger facility next time! As for the show, it went great! We sang 25 songs to a massive crowd that was by far the loudest audience that we have ever encountered! They really get us here in Brazil-possibly more so than any other country. We sang a host of songs from every album and even sang in Portuguese. At the end of the night I gave an altar call and many came to know the Lord. When we were relaxing after the show the promoter came up to us with a huge smile on his face. He had never seen so many unbelievers in his church before. They handed me a stack of response cards filled out by new converts and everyone was so excited to see such a tremendous harvest in just one night. The next day we got up early and began filming a music video for Avion's "I Love You Father". It is coming along nicely. In the afternoon we headed off to the beach for some big wave surf ing. It is incredible what an impact our music has made on this massive country, everywhere we go somebody recognizes us and tells us how much they love our songs. It is a real blessing being here. Today we fly to Sao Luis, the reggae capitol of Brazil and have no idea what to expect. Please pray for safe travel and many salvations on this next leg of our tour. Also pray for Jayme (our sax player). He has tremendous back pains and may have some sort of stomach virus. BobFest's reggae BobFest, the touring festival formerly known as the Bob Marley Festival Tour, is set to move into Sunken Garden Theater on Saturday and Sunday. Gates open at 1 p.m. each day. Tickets cost $10 at the gate. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. The festival will feature music, Caribbean and African art and crafts, food and green lifestyle displays. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Rape Crisis Center and The Celebration Circle. Sunken Garden Theater is the initial stop on the new BobFest tour for a good reason. "San Antonio was the biggest date on the Bob Marley Festival tour," said Henry Turner Jr., leader of the New Orleans band Flavor, long a festival mainstay. "If this works, we've got the rebirth of what could be a great tour. If the people in San Antonio ever wanted to show One Love, this is it." The festival is named in honor of reggae legend Robert Nesta Marley. More than 25 years after he died of cancer, Marley remains the biggest name in reggae. His roots reggae brought people together through socially conscious lyrics and heartbeat rhythms. "This kind of festival introduces new artists to a large fan base and, for established artists like myself, it offers the opportunity to further reggae music," Turner said. BobFest continues the tradition of featuring touring acts and local performers. Saturday headliners include DRUM, Turner & Flavor, Jah Roots, Cas Haley (of Woodbelly) and Michael Black & Higher Heights . The Saturday bill also will feature White Elephant, 51 Acres, Lowrise, 7th Generation, Ahummin' Acoustical Acupuncture and Raspas. DRUM, Turner & Flavor, Black & Higher Heights, AAA and 7th Generation will return Sunday. They'll be joined by Sun Salutation, Pablo & the Hemphill 7, Echo Squad and Dog Men Poets. Both nights will end with a grand finale featuring the bands and festival staff. A schedule is available at www.myspace.com/sanantoniobobfest. In the commercial part of the music whirl, rap-influenced, dancehall-style reggae supplanted Marley's roots reggae. "There never should have been a competition between dancehall and roots reggae," said Turner, who describes his music as Louisiana reggae funk. "Roots reggae is more peaceful. The urban style, dancehall, is more violent and turbulent. "We've got to find that balance. People don't usually see the wisdom until they're in trouble. It's the same in music. The youth feel the need to knock the elders out of the way and the elders feel the need to teach the youth. The youth today feel America is a violent nation and that they have to be violent to survive. We all need to realize the only antidote to hate is love and the only antidote to war is peace." RIK ROK & TONY GOLD BIG YARD One of my all time favorite reggae singers, Half Pint has reecntly signed a joint venture deal with Essential Media Group LLC for his catalogue. It is a major distribution deal with Universal, a joint-venture with Essential Media Group called EMG. What makes this deal so unique, is that they will be committing a certain amount of funds to the promotion of the album and to the artiste, but they are not getting any option. Secondly, another part of the deal for Half Pint's back catalogue is to remaster some of his classic songs and put out a best of collectables, like a double CD packaging, a very unique style of packaging that will like a book format and a story on his life. This will also be coming out with worldwide distribution but instead of just Universal alone, there will be other sub-distributors who will be able to get this, so it won't be exclusive to Universal. Other sub-distributors throughout the world will be able to distribute this music as well. There is also a special arrangement of the deal for placement of Half Pint's songs in movies and TV commercials with the company coming directly to the singer's management instead of going to the publisher. Shortly, EMG will release No Stress Express, his latest of over 15 albums. Newcomer Demarco whose hit Fallen Soldiers has been making serious strides on radio and also on the charts, has reportedly signed a three album deal with Koch Records. Demarco is elated about the turn of events in his career. The burly 25-year-old singer whose real name is Collin Edwards, is originally from Portmore in St Catherine. While Demarco refused to disclose the monetary value of the deal, a highly placed source revealed that it was in excess of US$1 million, but I find this real hard to believe even in jamaican dollars. This has not been confirmed. The deal came about when Boyd James brought an A&R representative from Koch Records over to Big Yard to listen to some songs. Shane Brown who is working with Demarco, decided to play some of his tracks for the A&R rep' and he liked what he heard. He took the tracks with him back to the US and he contacted us. They had him record my part of a collaboration that they had in mind for rapper Foxy Brown. The song is called Dreams and it is going to be on Foxy's upcoming album. Demarco said a video for Fallen Soldiers will be re-shot on film and serviced to urban outlets in the US. The first album under the deal is expected to be delivered by year end. Serani from the Daseca crew left the island last week to commence work on a project with Koch Records in the US. The project is a joint venture with Epic Records. Serani's latest video, She Loves Me, is already getting heavy rotation. Another clip DOH featuring Bugle is also generating some buzz. Earlier this year Serani was featured on Mavado's chart topping single Dying. A new clip for that song will be directed by Little X within the next few weeks. In our new releases this week first from Tuff Gong it's the debut album from 14 year old Javaugh with 'Superstar.' A solid cd with lots of potential for this young main. Mainly on the roots & culture tip. Grade I records out of St Croix releases a cd form the islands next success story Danny I with 'Unchangeable.' A really good roots & culture cd with a voice closest to Vaughn Benjamin of Midnite. Great utilization of horns & other instruments to create a well produced album including 'Gone Away.' Each week we ask a trivia question first last week we asked, Dennis Brown's first recording was when? He was only 12 years old This week we ask, Dennis Brown recorded for several producers but who eventually became his predominately exclusive hitmaker? In case you don't know. we will have all that & more on next weeks edition...
