BobFest's reggae BobFest, the touring festival formerly known as the Bob Marley Festival Tour, is set to move into Sunken Garden Theater on Saturday and Sunday. Gates open at 1 p.m. each day. Tickets cost $10 at the gate. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. The festival will feature music, Caribbean and African art and crafts, food and green lifestyle displays. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Rape Crisis Center and The Celebration Circle. Sunken Garden Theater is the initial stop on the new BobFest tour for a good reason. "San Antonio was the biggest date on the Bob Marley Festival tour," said Henry Turner Jr., leader of the New Orleans band Flavor, long a festival mainstay. "If this works, we've got the rebirth of what could be a great tour. If the people in San Antonio ever wanted to show One Love, this is it." The festival is named in honor of reggae legend Robert Nesta Marley. More than 25 years after he died of cancer, Marley remains the biggest name in reggae. His roots reggae brought people together through socially conscious lyrics and heartbeat rhythms. "This kind of festival introduces new artists to a large fan base and, for established artists like myself, it offers the opportunity to further reggae music," Turner said. BobFest continues the tradition of featuring touring acts and local performers. Saturday headliners include DRUM, Turner & Flavor, Jah Roots, Cas Haley (of Woodbelly) and Michael Black & Higher Heights . The Saturday bill also will feature White Elephant, 51 Acres, Lowrise, 7th Generation, Ahummin' Acoustical Acupuncture and Raspas. DRUM, Turner & Flavor, Black & Higher Heights, AAA and 7th Generation will return Sunday. They'll be joined by Sun Salutation, Pablo & the Hemphill 7, Echo Squad and Dog Men Poets. Both nights will end with a grand finale featuring the bands and festival staff. A schedule is available at www.myspace.com/sanantoniobobfest. In the commercial part of the music whirl, rap-influenced, dancehall-style reggae supplanted Marley's roots reggae. "There never should have been a competition between dancehall and roots reggae," said Turner, who describes his music as Louisiana reggae funk. "Roots reggae is more peaceful. The urban style, dancehall, is more violent and turbulent. "We've got to find that balance. People don't usually see the wisdom until they're in trouble. It's the same in music. The youth feel the need to knock the elders out of the way and the elders feel the need to teach the youth. The youth today feel America is a violent nation and that they have to be violent to survive. We all need to realize the only antidote to hate is love and the only antidote to war is peace." Brown's blues Houston blues ace Texas Johnny Brown has been playing guitar and singing for more than 60 years and, at 79, shows little inclination to quit. "I've been working pretty steady," he said, laughing. Friday night at 9 p.m., Brown and his Quality Blues Band will work Sam's Burger Joint. Brown was a regular at the venue back when it was Billy Blues. "I'd like to think I have my own style," Brown said. "I have never been a good copier. You can copy some other people's licks, but you can't play what they feel. I play what I feel and try to play music that other people will feel. When I write, I write my stories so they can relate to anybody." Brown turned pro in 1946 with Amos Milburn's Aladdin Chickenshackers. After a stint in the Army, Brown returned to work with Milburn and then started doing studio work for the storied Duke and Peacock labels, the home of Bobby Bland, Ruth Brown, Junior Parker, Lavelle White, Joe Hinton and many others. He recorded a couple of instrumentals, "Snakehips" and "Suspense," for Peacock and worked the road on Duke/Peacock package tours. Brown also penned "Two Steps From the Blues," a song Bland turned into a classic and the title track of one of his best albums. Brown and Clarence Hollimon were responsible for some of the best blues-guitar playing going, a combination of fat chords and single-string picking. Brown's trademark is still that great big guitar sound, which he uses on songs such as "No Part Time Love," "Bad Hair Day" and "Blues Defender." "I want to do what old and young people want to hear," Brown added. "When I play my music, my grandkids like it as much as I do." Hurricane Chris' ratchet Are your ready for some ratchet? If you're not, plenty of people are. Ratchet, Shreveport's answer to crunk, is in explosion mode thanks, in part, to the breakout success of 18-year-old rapper Hurricane Chris (Chris Dooley), his smash hit single "A Bay Bay" and the follow up "The Hand Clap." Hurricane Chris is touring with his major-label debut CD, "51/50 Ratchet." The tour will stop Sunday at Club Rio, 13307 San Pedro Ave. There'll be two shows, one at 4 p.m. for high school students (a school ID will be required to gain entry) and for those 18 and older at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for the high school show; $20 for minors, $15 for adults for the late show. Support comes from Beat Mechanix, COA, DJ Swagga and E-Phlat. Jim Beal Jr.'s Night Lights covers the area music scene Wednesdays in S.A. Life and Fridays in Weekender. He also plays bass in the local band Miss Neesie & the Ear Food Orchestra. Send e-mail to jbeal@express-news.net. Beal is the host of the "Third Coast Music Network" show from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays on KSYM, 90.1 FM. Coxsone is one of the pioneers who contributed tremendously to the growth and development of Jamaican music. They want to establish scholarships to his schooL Alpha Boys as well as the Edna Maley School. In fact, some of that is already happening. Mrs. Dodd has handed over donations to the Alpha Boys' School, as well as funds to support a three-year scholarship at the School of Music, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The museum will feature different items of his from the early days to today. The museum will be at the 13 Brentford road location which also houses the studio. The BBC's 'The Next Big Thing 2007', the talent search has gone to Jamaica. There were no auditions or performances, just part of the BBc's scouring the world looking for exciting new music, bands and performers who will shape the future; musical pioneers who really deserve attention. The BBC said that last year the talent search received entries from thousands of musicians from over 40 countries. The winner, Silva, went on to have a number one hit in her home country, Armenia, and played the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Entries closed on November 18, 2007, and finalists will perform for an all-star jury in London in December. One act will be crowned The Next Big Thing 2007 and perform to a live audience of 3,000 people at London's O2 stadium to celebrate the BBC World Service's 75th Anniversary in December, alongside some of the most exciting names in music. The American Music Awards took place Sunday November 18 at Los Angeles, California's Nokia Theatre and if you missed Alicia Keys part, I encourage all reggae & dancehall fans to seek it out. Actor Blair Underwood introduced Alicia Keys, who on the verge of her latest album release, performed the album's first hit single, 'No One' with a special reggae & dancehall twist. In the 3 & a half minutes Keys had to perform she included a host of dancehall artists Junior Reid, Chakademus and the Pliers & Beenie Man to create what would be the biggest and most unexpected highlight of the night, especially for the genres. So a very special big up to Alicia Keys & her camp. In our new releases this week first from Deeboz Muzik they release an old Dennis Brown riddim on called 'A Little Bit More.' A nice cd featuring a good solid line up of songs & artists with several true singers like Qshan Dya, Chezidek, Tony Curtis, Cha'Maine & this weeks feature G Whizz with 'Music'. Greensleeves releases the new Jammy produced Ras Shiloh cd 'Only King Selassie.' A good solid cd of classic riddims & good lyrics but nothing outstanding. They also release the best of Music Works with classics from Gregory, Shabba & the Mighty Diamonds. Lastly, its' Sylvanus with 'Talk To Jah' courtesy of Silver Globe. A decent cd with all good original music & lyrics. The vocals stray at times but 'The Debate' holds strongest. Ronnie Davis is best known as one of the singers in the legendary reggae band, The Itals. They were a vocal group that formed in 1976 and comprise Keith Porter, Ronnie Davis and Lloyd Ricketts. The Itals were inspired by the late 60s/early 70s American R&B groups, although their themes are Rastafarian-oriented. Ronnie Davis was born in Savanna La Mar, Jamaica in July of 1950. When he joined the Tennors at the age of seventeen, he began a professional singing career, which now spans some thirty years of recording and performing highlights. The Tennors had already begun to make a name for themselves with lead vocalist Maurice Johnson and George 'Clive' Murphy singing "Pressure And Slide," a big hit for Studio One. Clive saw potential in the young Ronnie Davis early. With coaching and encouragement from Clive, Ronnie was soon singing lead for the Tennors. Together, the Tennors recorded some of the most memorable vocal performances of the period. Titles were released on Treasure Isle, Gay Feet, Prince Buster, Dynamic and the group's own 'Tennors' label. By the time the Tennors began to dissolve, the group had recorded well over fifty titles including productions of Jackie Bernard, Monty Morris and several other artists as well. As rock steady began to evolve into reggae, the Tennors as a group ceased to exist and Ronnie began recording as a solo artist. As reggae lovers know, the early 1970's began a period of amazing creativity in Jamaican music. Ronnie, living in Kingston at that time, was among the most prolific and successful solo vocalists in Jamaica. From 1971 to 1975, Ronnie recorded well over one hundred titles for a variety of labels and producers. He recorded extensively for Bunny Lee in the early seventies, but it was his work for Lloyd Campbell that would have the most profound effect on his life and professional career. In 1975, Ronnie had a number-one hit for Lloyd Campbell with the tune, "Won't You Come Home," on the Spider Man label. In 1976, the same riddim was re-voiced by Keith Porter, with Ronnie singing the harmony parts. First released as by 'Keith & Ronnie," Campbell quickly renamed them the Itals. The tune, "Inna Dis A Time," went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year and a signature-piece for the new group. Despite the many achievements made by the Itals over the years, Ronnie felt the need to project more of his own music and has worked on solo projects more than once. His sound remains fresh and up-to-date, yet retains the timeless appeal of classic roots reggae. Few reggae artists have demonstrated the ability to remain vital with the changing times.
