MAP & DIRECTIONS TO CAMP HOLSTON http://www.holstoncamp.org/ COREY HARRIS Corey Harris has led the life of a musical explorer, traveling and listening all over the world. He's performed at many of the world's most well-known venues, including the Montreux Jazz Festival, London's Royal Albert Hall, New York's Lincoln Center, Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. As the star of Martin Scorsese's segment of the PBS series, The Blues, Corey traveled to Mali to play with Ali Farka Toure, a voyage he repeated for his album of field recordings called Mississippi to Mali, in which he explored the connections between African music and the blues. In the decade between 1995 and 2005, Corey Harris released a string of critically acclaimed albums which firmly established this young lion as the most versatile blues and roots artist of his time. He has toured in Guinea and Mali, West Africa, as well as South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Most recently, Corey has released Zion Crossroads (Telarc, 2007), a celebration of roots reggae, Ras Tafari, Ethiopia, and the African continent. Horgen) CLICK TO COREY HARRIS http://www.coreyharrismusic.com/ THE AFROMOTIVE A thundering 9-piece ensemble from Asheville, NC, The Afromotive is escorting Afrobeat music into the modern age and taking the dance floor with them. Fueled by a powerful three-piece horn section and an unstoppable rhythm section, The Afromotive's musical dance excursions are steered by bandleader Kevin Meyame. Originally from Cote D'Ivoire, West Africa, Kevin has performed throughout West Africa and France with drum and dance troupe Tanably. He moved to Asheville, NC in 2004 to perform as lead dancer with Ballet Warraba, and as fate would have it, founded the musical collaboration that is The Afromotive. Singing in French, English, and his native language of Baoule, as well as providing polyrhythms on djembe, Kevin adds an authentically African flavor to their nu-afrobeat sound. The combination of Kevin's cultural and musical background and the jazz and classically trained musicians of The Afromotive has created a synthesized sound that crosses musical and ethnic boundaries. Influenced by bluegrass, old time, Southern gospel, jazz, African drumming, and a respectful portion of Rastafari spirituality, Ras Alan's music is full of life, and the reggae rhythm is extremely danceable. Establishing the term "Reggaebilly" in 1991, Ras Alan's song's are true stories inspired locally and applicable worldwide, rooted in Southern Appalachian tradition and consciously moving forward! The crowd is emerged with lyrics of truth and a voice of intensity backed by bass, organ and drums. The roots of their sound and message stem mainly from Laura's life growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Formed in the summer of 2006, the band switches up the music between high-energy blues and funk and laid-back R&B behind Laura's captivating stage presence. TO YOUR ARMS OF LOVE JAH CURE VP Jah Cure is scheduled to go on a tour of Britain from October 20 to 22. However, the Daily Mail newspaper's online edition reported earlier this week that Cure, whose real name is Siccature Alcock, has been banned by the British authorities from entering the country because of his prison sentence of more than 12 months. Castro Brown, whose New Name Music company is putting on the tour, said that Jah Cure has not been banned, but was refused entry. Brown, however, said he is now in the process of seeking a waiver for the singer. They didn't approve the first application, so we reapplied to get a waiver. Brown also promised that if for any reason Jah Cure won't be able to perform in England, the fans who bought tickets will be refunded. Obviously boosted by Jah Cure's extraordinary appeal and popularity in England, Brown also said he would reschedule the tour for a later date if necessary. Alison Young, Jah Cures' publicist, said that the Rastafarian singer has acquired a work permit for the UK and is now in the process of securing a UK visa, which is a separate application process, but no determination has yet been made on the issue. If Jah Cure does get to go to England & the UK there are talks of protests by rape activists groups. Javaughn, a new & young artist of the age of 14, is gearing up for his first major U.S. tour this fall. He has completed a 10 track album entitled, SuperStar that is scheduled for release on November 20 under the Tuff Gong/ Ghetto Youths banner. The album is produced Damian 'JR Gong' Marley. Talent runs in the family and by the time he was four, Javaughn's exposure started from his singing with the Sensation Band from Port Antonio, where he rose rapidly as a child star. These gigs only stepped up his reputation as a solid cultural singer, and soon, word spread about his talent and he was being booked for some of Jamaica's major concerts including Sting, East Fest, Stars R Us, Welcome To Jamrock, UNIFEST and Bob Marley Tribute Concert in St Ann. Javaughn will be appearing at select shows with Stephen Marley this fall. Those dates included LA, Las Vegas & select shows in Georgia & Florida. Matisyahu embraced Orthodox Judaism while studying in a Chabad yeshiva in New York City. His virtuosity in reggae and hip-hop, religious lyrics and uncanny garb and antics on stage launched him to international music stardom. Matisyahu experienced a "spiritual shift" while celebrating the High Holy Days in Israel. That drew to him to alternative forms of Chasidut such as Breslav. As quoted he syas "What we do is not at all about Judaism and not about Chabad. It's much bigger than one religion or another," he said. "It relies on something real that can speak to anybody. It's about truth and memory." While still Orthodox, Matisyahu said he is "searching for freedom from a pronounced identification with one specific group. In our new releases this week first from Heartbeat Records it's two more Studio One releases 'When Rhythm Was King' & The Gladiators 'Singles.' The first is basically top songs from the top rhythms from Studio One. Any reggae lover will know these or should. This would be included in the first part of a reggae book. Then the Gladiators compilation is a nice collection of Albert Griffiths & the crew. A Nice addition. Greenesleeves releases their 'The Biggest One Drop Anthems 2007.' Always a great cd & this year they add a dvd to it. It's the debut album from Khari Kill 'Picture Of Selassie,' which is still his best & most popular. Trinidad's reggae maestro has all the riddims but not hits yet. It is very conscious but I had higher expectations which is a fault on my part. VP records releases the star of dancehall's future Assassin's 'Gully Sit'n.' Straight ahead, good dancehall. They also release one of the years best riddims in 'Guardian Angel.' Lastly it's a product of reggae's future & our feature this week on selector's choice Duane Stephenson with 'From August Town.' Modern day roots with a sound that is a cross between Thriller U & Lucky Dube. Very good & a great surprise Each week we ask a trivia question first last week we asked, what dj was the only one to rival UROY during the late 60's & early 70's? Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 02:08:18 –0400 From: Wayne stoddart JAMI (Jamaica Music Awards) nominee for Best Gospel Band of 1996, Best New Reggae Gospel album Nominee for the New York Caribbean Gospel Awards (NYCGA) 2002, Awarded 2003 most Distinguished Male Vocal (NYCGA) and Nominated Best New Reggae Gospel Album by the Merlin Gospel Awards 2004- Wayne Stoddart is back with an innovative independent roots gospel album entitled Love Convictions. The sophomore album is an authentic reggae project staged on uplifting inspirational lyrics. His solo debut album, "Committed," was self-produced. The title track Committed exploded the Jamaican air waves and spent 8 weeks at number one on the Love 101 FM's top 10 chart. LOVE CONVICTION is the kind of deep introspective album that most artists aspire to make. "It addresses the issue of misplaced priorities that plagues humanity," Stoddart said. "I pray this album makes a difference in the lives of all who come within earshot." Stoddart went on to explain that he was inspired to write many of the songs from the album from his closer than ever relationship with God and the revelation of The Word revealed to him by the Holy Spirit. From the militant expressive Move On, to the easy-listening Live Love and Learn to the Foot stumping Reggae Rock the album mirrors the greatest commandments Love God and Love each other. LOVE CONVICTIONS is an accompanying tool for overcoming adversity. Move On is an encouraging theme full of allegory of a Christian's fight to keep focused on the Promised Land in the face of opposition. Lives in Smoke takes a serious look at the dangers of drug abuse to both the physical and spiritual man. Love in any Language addresses the issue of disunity on a global scale and speaks to the need for ethnic, religious and social harmony among all nations. Immediately after the appeal for peace you are led into an atmosphere of worship with the powerful Highest Praise which showcases the talent of Platinum Producer Dale "Dr. Dizzle" Virgo on a modern lovers rock reggae riddim. Background vocals were done by the well acclaimed TNJ (Nikki and Tina), Abi, and Carol Dexter and the talented band and production cast included names like Clifton "Johnny" Clarke, Leighton "Floyd" Henry, Craig McDonald, Othniel "Ottey" Lewis, Benjy Myaz, Hugh Palmer, Sly Dunbar, Rohan Dwyer, Damond Stoddart, Zamar, Dalton Brownie, St. Matthew and members of the Code Red Band. Jamaican born Stoddart entered the gospel music scene in the mid 90's touring with the Grace Thrillers and has shared stage with the likes of Shirley Caesar, FC Barnes, Morgan Heritage, Cherine Anderson and Judy Mowatt (Former member of Bob Marley's )I-Threes to name a few. In essence Stoddart is a dynamic reggae gospel artist both on stage and off; he is a dedicated Christian and a top-class musician.
