Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2007 08:32:09 -0700 (PDT) From: colleen colman An update on Peter Broggs.... Its been a while since I have posted anything regarding Peter's progress. It has been an extremely slow progress the last 3 years for Peter, but he prays that one day he can get better. His sight has become slightly worse from the stroke and he still has not regained full speech or mobility of his right hand. His fingers were starting to move back in March when I was in Jamaica but he does not have enough strength to use his right hand and arm fully. I want to say a "Special Thanks" to R.A.W especially to Tom Pearson and Daniel Frankston for their ongoing efforts in helping Peter. Peters appreciates it very much and he needs all the help he can get! Funds raised can help in the ongoing medical needs and therapy. The final CD recorded prior his stroke in Amsterdam will be available in the next few weeks with new tracks. I will have them available for $10 should anyone be interested please contact me at colleenmariecolman@yahoo.com Give thanks! And while you are at our store don't forget to pick up hot new CDs by Stitchie, Tiko, Kristine Alicia, Lynette White, Shadrach and Solomon Jabby. Here are the details: Artist: Katalys Crew Album: 4 A Reason Genre: Roots / Dancehall Label: Katsjam Re cords Ltd Year Released: 2007 Cost: $13.97 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: The Katalys Crew is back and they have returned with a vengeance! Just listen to the blazing horns on the polished title track "4 a Reason" and you will agree that it was well worth the wait. Paired down significantly from the original nine players, this brilliant four piece proves that less is more--much, much more! With a far more rootsy set than their previous offerings, this uplifting album is sure to create its own niche in the ever-growing gospel reggae market. Blessed with some heavenly roots tracks like "4 A Reason", "The Heartbeat" and "Action," any roots aficionado is sure to be satisfied. Just listen to the boisterous brass section on the steppers influenced "Trod The Earth" or the lovers rock sounds of "Wonderful World" (featuring Richie Stephens) and you'll agree these guys are truly originators. Other standout songs include the Alpha Blonde influenced "More Than a Conqueror," and "Father" (Feat. Change's Andrew Lawrence) over one of Sly and Robbie's Taxi Gang Riddims. Like many Jamaican recordings these days, this album refuses to stay on a sonic plateau. But whether they take it down low with ballads such as "Persuaded", "Can't Stop Now", or give you the Niyabinghi vibes of "Chanting", the Urban flare of "Love" or even the disco feel of "I'm Free", Katalys refuses to compromise their message and Biblically inspired lyrics. The group also sings about a plethora of subjects from marriage ("Woman of Virtue") to Family ("Sending My Love Mama"), and Christianity ("Call Him") to harmony ("Unity"). Overall, I find that this album is far more consistent in songwriting, sonic quality and production than their freshmen offering. And while there are plenty of singjay vocals by the original Radic, there are no digital dancehall beats on this album--it's mostly roots. I must admit that with so many polished roots songs, I do miss the alto offerings of the group's former crooner Jai, who departed last year with solo aspirations. However, Radic has improved in his vocals tremendously over the last year and is confident enough to take the helm with tremendous results. With the help of background vocals by the other members of the Crew (Collin, Courick and Paul), and a strong cast of guest vocalists such as Luciano, Richie Stephens and Sherwin Gardner, the crew has pulled it off brilliantly! Refusing to follow the crowd, Katalys has set out to "Go where there is no path and leave a trail," says Katalys founder Paul Barclay (Bass/vocals/production). They have accomplished their mission on this ambitious album. Packed with 17 tracks of righteous roots music, "4 a Reason" is a wonderful vision of what it would be like in Jamaica if the reggae industry decided to shift from lifeless digital dancehall beats to real music performed by real musicians who are singing 4 A REASON. Pick up your copy today and catch a glimpse of the wonderful world of gospel reggae according to the Katalys Crew! You won't be disappointed. SHOP NOW --> http://www.gospelreggae.com Artist: Ziggy Soul Album: Genesis Genre: Roots Label: Glory Music Year Released: 2007 Cost: $13.97 ALBUM DESCRIPTION: A prodigy of world acclaimed reggae artist, Bob Marley, Ziggy Soul (born Devon Beckford) returns with his sweetest musical offering to date. From the first note he strikes hard with "Tell Me Who." Ziggy said he first envisioned this song over Marley's "Heathen" riddim, but then asked the musicians flip it up and build their own original track around it. It's a good thing they did 'cause this one is burning up! The best word to describe this timely release is "Original". Refusing to imitate, Ziggy sets the pace and delivers an album that is far more rootsy than any of Marley's children's recent releases. You may have first heard Ziggy Soul on Lion of Zion's Dancehall Baptism 1 with the 80's influenced "DR.A.W Me Nearer" from his debut effort "Born Again". Since then he has given us many years of silence. As you may alrea dy know, one of the greatest obstacles in the gospel reggae arena is the ever-delayed sophomore album by an up-and-coming artist. In this case it took Trench Town Rocker Ziggy Soul a whopping seven years to follow up his solo debut "Born Again". With this in mind, it is appropriate that his follow up is titled "Genesis", for this is a new beginning, BUT REST ASSURED, IT IS WELL WORTH THE WAIT! On "Genesis," Ziggy displays an uncanny ability to float excerpts from the Bible over bubbling reggae rhythms without making it sound forced. He does this with eloquence on songs like the ska/rocksteady "Genesis" ('In the beginning God created the heaven and earth') and "Hallelujah" ('The Lord is my light and salvation, whom shall I fear...'). With "Rescue Me" (inspired by Psalms), it's no wonder that he now calls himself the "Psalmist". He continues to quote this incredible book in songs like quot; There is a God" (taken from Psalm 14); "Fools say in their heart 'There is no god". Ziggy switches up the pace a bit with the uptempo dancehall praise offering "Hallelujah" before he brings us to the raggamuffin hip-hop flavored "My Soul" (inspired by Psalm 62) featuring the flow of Deejay Gallimore (formerly of the KGees). Ziggy takes us beyond Psalms with the ethereal modern roots of "Proverbs" and the Gospels; "Honor the Son," and "Love" (inspired by the Book of John). Other stand out tracks include the funky urban roots crusher "I Can Do Anything", "Tell Me Who" and "Resue Me" with clavinet by Othniel Lewis. A reoccurring theme on this album is the salvation of Trench Town, an infamous slum in Kingston, Jamaica. On "Jesus Is Trench Town Rock", written by Tommy Co wan (formerly of The Jamaicans), Ziggy mentions this rugged ghetto. Check out his clever wordplay; "In my home town, there is a rumor going round/They say I've gone uptown wearing Jesus' crown/They can't understand what's come over me/But when I take a stock, Jesus is Trench Town Rock... The Rock in which I stand 'Jesus' is Trench Town Rock." - (Jesus Is Trench Town Rock). On track 10, Ziggy declares "God is justice, His mercy keep us from all condemnation", and he goes on to say; "None a we innocent, we're all guilty... it's so filthy." He follows it up with the blazing dancehall anthem "Hell Fire" (featuring a gruff DJ Moses) where he says; "Someone will have to tell, no good no gwaan a hell" This sets the listener up perfectly for the good news of Jesus Christ shared so eloquently in "Rescue Me" and "Love". It would have been a hug e disappointment if Ziggy made us wait seven years for an album that was out dated and riddled with poor production. But this is far from the case, once again proving the idiom that "Good things come to those who wait." This is a genuine, well-produced roots reggae album with an outstanding sound quality and sweet female harmonies reminiscent of Marley's I-Threes. Ziggy's voice is drenched with authenticity and possesses is an unmistakable conviction, intensity and anointing from the Lord. Trust me when I say that there is nothing else like it in your gospel reggae collection. This is a genuine Boomshot and a must-have for any Christian reggae fan. Order your copy today! After releasing one of the best (and perhaps most overlooked) reggae albums of 2005, JohnStone seeks to make a big splash with the follow-up, seeking the aid of Bambu Station lead singer and all-around musical magician Jalani Horton in recording Innocent Children. Not that they needed the magic touch that the Virgin Islands has produced reggae-wise over the past several years, but recording in that inspirational land certainly didn't hurt. Listening to Innocent Children is like stepping into a time machine and transporting yourself back to the age of classic roots harmony. "Peace and Love and Harmony" and "Clinton's Lament" in particular recall the heyday of Israel Vibration , with rich, layered vocals and a laid-back, rural vibe. The instrumentation is likewise lovely; we get a couple of nice dubs (aided by the mixing of veteran Jim Fox, who has worked with -- you guessed it -- Israel Vibration), plus extended musical riffs such as the jazzy saxophone intro to "Black Spirits Swells." As the name indicates, Innocent Children is topical -- the title track inspired by a news report of children recruited to fight in Haiti -- and often mournful, but the tender "Your Love" and "Doubt" showcase the group's lovers side in fine style. JohnStone is a sure cure for reggae fans lamenting that the music isn't what it used to be. Those of you who didn't pick up their debut should not miss this train again.
