For Linton Kwesi Johnson
This FRIDAY April 25th @ 8:00pm
Revolutionary Dub Poetry
Linton Kwesi Johnson was born in 1952 in Chapelton, Jamaica. He
moved to London in 1963 to be with his mother and went on to
read Sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
He joined the Black Panther movement in 1970, organising a
poetry workshop and working with Rasta Love, a group of poets
and percussionists. He joined the Brixton-based Race Today
Collective in 1974. His first book of poems, Voices of the
Living and the Dead, was published by the Race Today imprint in
1974. His second book, Dread, Beat, an' Blood (1975) includes
poems written in Jamaican dialect, and was released as a record
in 1978. He is widely regarded as the father of 'dub poetry', a
term he coined to describe the way a number of reggae DJs
blended music and verse. Johnson maintains that his starting
point and focus is poetry, composed before the music. He
recorded several albums on the Island label, including Forces of
Victory (1979), Bass Culture (1980), LKJ In dub (1980) and Making
History (1984) and founded his own record label - LKJ - in the
mid-1980s, selling over two million records worldwide.
In 1977 he was awarded a C. Day Lewis Fellowship and became
Writer in Residence for the London Borough of Lambeth. Race
Today published his third book of poetry, Inglan Is a Bitch, in
1980. He worked primarily as a journalist in the 1980s and was a
reporter for Channel 4 television's The Bandung File. Tidings An'
Times: Selected Poems was published in 1991 as both a book and
musical recording.
He was made Associate Fellow at Warwick University in 1985 and
Honorary Fellow at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1987. He is a
regular broadcaster on radio and hosted an evening of Caribbean
music and culture for BBC Radio 2 in October 2001.
Linton Kwesi Johnson lives in Brixton, South London. A selection
of his poetry, entitled Mi Revalueshanary Fren, was published in
2002 as a Penguin Classic edition with an introduction by Fred
D'Aguiar. In 2005 he was awarded a Musgrave medal by the
Insitiute of Jamaica, for eminence in the field of poetry.

>From Ras Danny
Greetings, my fellow R.A.W. DJ¹s, bless up!
I am writing this note in order to get us all started in my endeavor to
revamp the relationships between R.A.W. Records Labels (as well as all record
labels for that matter!) and ourselves.
I anticipate getting started soon on a new updated data base to list all our
names, the names of records labels and any information about us, and the
record labels, that you all think is pertinent.
To start I would like you to update your info for all the categories that
are listed below. Please add anything you feel is crucial to making this
DJ/Label relationship strong and fruitful for all.
Please list:
Name,
Address,
Telephone Number,
Email,
Website URL (if any),
Name of program,
Day and time your program airs,
Name of radio station,
Address of radio station,
Radio stations website URL (if any)(and does your station stream live?)
Also, I need to know what kind of information from the labels themselves,
would be of most value to you. I have a list below that I have compiled.
Please indicate whether you think this info is needed or not and please add
anything that I may have left outŠ
Record Label Name,
Record Label URL,
Name of person In Charge DJ Promo,
Phone Number of person In Charge DJ Promo,
Email of person In Charge DJ Promo,
Address of person In Charge DJ Promo,
Method of submitting playlists,
Also tell me what kind of relationship you would like to have with reggae
music labels and/or the reggae artists themselves. I will sort it all out
and hopefully come up with a formula that will be beneficial to both DJ¹s
and Record Labels
This information will be used only to formulate and update a DJ & Label
database so please put as much info in as you can and send it back to me at
your earliest convenience.
Let us join together now, like never before, andŠ ³Forward The Reggae Vibe,

Subject: Announcing the Launch of Myreggae.com!
Date: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 3:36 AM
For Dr Dread
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2008
Doctor Dread Launches myreggae.com
State of the Art Website for All Things Reggae
Doctor Dread, born Gary Himelfarb in 1954, first discovered reggae music in
1973, after listening to Bob Marley¹s Catch A Fire and the Harder They Come
soundtrack. After frequent trips to Jamaica, his love for reggae was
cemented. Inspired by the people he met and the powerful roots of Jamaican
culture, he resolved to bring Jamaican music to the world. Back in the
States, he established a reputation as a DJ at WHFS, a major Washington DC
radio station, where he earned the ŒDoctor Dread¹ moniker, and where the
songs of reggae greats like Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and many lesser known
artists first reached the airwaves.
He founded RAS Records, which stands for Real Authentic Sounds, in 1980. The
label eventually grew to include a who¹s who roster of reggae artists, with
Black Uhuru, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle and Israel Vibration
all releasing landmark albums. He recently launched another label, Tafari
Records, which has released new material from Israel Vibration, Kenyatta
³Culture² Hill and Bunny Wailer, amongst others.
Ever the creative entrepreneur, Doctor Dread is now set to launch
myreggae.com , an exciting and comprehensive new
website for reggae artists and enthusiasts alike.
³I needed to reinvent myself in a way that was relevant to the ever-changing
music community. I have the same vision and energy for this as when I first
started RAS Records in my basement over 25 years ago. It¹s a vibe that feels
really right for the youth and for all those that love reggae. It is also a
way for artists to feature unreleased music for download and reach millions
of potential fans worldwide.²
Both an all-encompassing online store and a social networking community,
myreggae.com offers a combination of merchandise
and interactive space, from a comprehensive selection of CDs, digital
downloads, vinyl, books and t-shirts to discussions, blogs and profiles. The
site will also function as a platform for reggae artists to connect with a
worldwide fan base, allowing artists to upload and share their own music and
information on the site.
Perhaps most exciting to reggae fans will be the exclusive content offered
for download on the site. Doctor Dread has built up a considerable list of
connections over his twenty-five years in the business and plans to put
these contacts to good use, offering studio tracks and remixes formulated
especially for myreggae.com .
Each subsequent visit to the site will yield something new‹new exclusive
content, new releases, new discussions and a constantly expanding network of
reggae artists and enthusiasts. True to his independent roots, Doctor Dread
hopes the site will both support and invigorate the entire reggae community,
and looks forward to input from visitors.
³From when we set the foundation we can all watch it grow and become what it
is destined to become.²

Rasta Italist Reviews -
Tom "Seefari" Carroll is a veteran Ohio-based roots singer whose Rasta
Italist marks his sixth album to date. This is in itself an impressive
achievement, but if Seefari took as hands-on an approach with his previous
releases as he did with this one, his track record is all the more
astounding. One look at the liner notes reveals his Prince-like control over
all aspects of the album -- including writing, producing, engineering, lead
and backing vocals, and every single instrument. Rasta Italist is a pensive
and heartfelt album that harkens back to the '70s Golden Age of roots
reggae. Coupled with Seefari's righteous lyrics and humble, unassuming
vocals, it dR.A.W.s favorable comparison to Pablo Moses
' best work. Highlights
include "1 Love Not 2 Hate," "Pray Every Day," "No More War," and the title
track. - ReggaeReviews.com Burbank California
"New roots reggae sensation on the international scene SEEFARI is undeniably
one of these young artists emerging on the top of the basket. So much the
better! We hope to see SEEFARI on one of our European scenes. In the
meantime we can always obtain this album via the net."

>From the US (although I don't know exactly where he makes his home) is
Seefari, whose CD Rasta Italist (Upful Sound US1015CD, 2007) is true to its
title with extended meditations on Haile Selassie, ganja, spiritual unity,
natural living and the absurdity of war. Seefari is a hands-on dread who
plays all the instruments, sings nearly all the vocals and cultivates a
murky, dub-heavy sound that's deeply pleasing whether you're the inhaling
type or not (www.seefari.com ).

Apple Inc, owners of ITunes, has removed songs from dancehall artistes
Buju Banton, T.O.K. and Elephant Man from their music site stating
that the songs incite violence against homosexuals. In response to
letters written by the pro-homosexual Canadian-based organ-isations
Egale and SMM (Stop Murder Music) to iTunes in January, iTunes has
removed controversial murder music from Jamaican artistes in its North
American markets. Boom Bye Bye from Buju Banton, Chi-Chi Man from
T.O.K. and Log On by Elephant Man have all been pulled from iTunes
stores and the iTunes website. Apple's iTunes is the leading on line
distributor of music in North America through their websites and
iTunes stores. Since 2008 over four billion songs have been downloaded
since the service first launched on April 28, 2003. Interestingly
enough reggaeitunes.com has just launched.
The first prize for the 2009 International Soca Monarch now stands at
$1 million. The competition will have a new format, according to new
Executive
President of Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF), Gregory Fernandez.
In his maiden speech, Fernandez told his audience, "The 2009
International Soca Monarch competition will take on a new format,
where winners of soca competitions from within the region will
automatically qualify for the finals in Trinidad on Fantastic Friday.
"We are working on integrating the various soca monarch competitions
worldwide into a formal alliance. At least five spots in the finals
will come via this new format. It is hoped that eventually, the US,
Canada and England will have soca monarch competitions to send
representatives to Trinidad." Fernandez said once this is achieved,
the finals in Trinidad will then have global creditability and they
have already started talking with Ministries of Culture in a number of
Caribbean countries. Another big factor for the competition, he said,
is that each artist will have to work with the house band to eliminate
certain delays that have plagued the competition.
In case you missed it, Bob Marley's mom Cedella has passed. She died
in her sleep from natural causes its being reported on Tuesday April 8

'Roots' reggae.
