Please mark your calendars and RSVP, so that we may know how many people to expect. The chat room technology we'll be employing has different levels of service, and must be selected on the basis of the number of anticipated participants. Watch for our upcoming updates, as we'll be providing the actual web link to tap into the chat room we'll be using for the Annual Meeting. The Agenda for the Annual Meeting will be: A. Roll Call (Establish a Quorum). B. Summary of Reports of Officers and Directors (full reports will be made available either online, or by email in advance of the annual meeting). C. We will fine tuning and getting more specific on all the above as we get closer to the date. Some specific items up for discussion, or presentation at the Annual Meeting will be: - the staggering of Executive Board elections (ie. term lengths for the various positions). - the waiving of RAW dues during 2007 and the old-number buy back option. - streamlining the process by which the ByLaws may be amended (per section 7.2 thereof). In the meantime, my goals (with the support of existing & future Board members) are as follows: - to finalize & secure the proper technology package that will enable the successful conducting of our Annual Meeting (a free version of Parachat was used with success in our trial run of 2/17). - to determine - to finalize and make available on the RAW site the previous Board Members' Annual Reports and the new Board Members' 2008 Agendas (which will also be emailed via our next Board-to-Massive updates). - to create a summary of our trial run chat (of 2/17) and provide it for review by the Board at least, with a general membership solicitation to follow, requesting input/vision ideas for RAW going forward (a suggestion-box may be set up on the RAW site to collect these for presentation in summary form at the Annual Meeting). Soon Almost Nearly Partly Often Portion Headliner: Timeka Marshall Who would have thought that a simple jingle for a local company would be the start of a music career that seems destined for success? Well that is exactly how young Guyanese singer Timeka Marshall got her break. In 2006 a local telecommunications company staged a competition for their new jingle. Timeka entered and won. This became the springboard for recording her first R&B Single ³We Should Separate², which was released and quickly followed by the music video. Produced by Muzikmedia and shot on location in Jamaica both the track and the video gained popularity on the Caribbean music scene and held their own in heavy rotation on radio and television stations across the region. Yet there was much more to unearth in the way of Timekaıs talents. After performing We Should Seperate on the Guyanese entertainment circuit to appreciative audiences, Timeka was keen to cultivate her songwriting talents and attended the Barbados Music seminar and Showcase in February 2007. There she blew regional and international music executives away with her obvious talent and enticing sensuality. With just one performance of the gritty dancehall track Nothing At All, Timeka was immediately signed to a developmental deal which would see her working with some of Jamaicaıs top producers. back to top <#top> For bookings: Call: 876.754.1526 Click: headlinejamaica.com Complete: PDF Booking Form Booking Agents For: Sean Paul Wayne Wonder T.O.K. Marley Brothers Shine at Smile Jamaica The Marley Brothers delivered a spirited and lively set at the historic combined Smile Jamaica-Africa Unite concert. The long night into the morning was marked by countless notable performances in honour of Bob Marley and his vision. A feel of eager anticipation gripped the crowd that gathered at the beach minutes to the 8pm scheduled show time as images of Bob Marley and Rastafari on flags floated in the wind bringing a mystic touch to the venue. Crowds trailed in throughout the night awaiting the best in International and local acts. 2 Face Idibia from Eastern Nigeria soulfully hailed his African Queens as he expressed his deep love for Jamaica and Bob Marley. Veteran Bunny Wailer gave one of his most energetic and appreciated performances in a while blazing with his older hits. It was when American soul crooner John Legend took the stage that the venue came together as one to hear Legend wow the crowd. Women flocked to Legendıs glowing white appearance like moth to a flame as he melodically sand Save Room, Ordinary People, Stay With You and more even inviting one lucky lady on stage as he serenaded her. Legendıs skills on the piano were not lost as well with a huge grand piano placed in the centre of the stage as teased the keys. After a slight break Barbadian singer turned pop icon Rihanna looked daring in a short green and gold number. Rihanna looked ecstatic to be on the Jamaican stage as she caressed the mic, flipped her short hair and gave a little whine now and again. Rihanna entered on stage to her rendition of Bob Marleyıs Is This Love before going into tracks from her Good Girl Gone Bad album. Singing Breaking Dishes and Shut Up and Drive Rihanna went into her International hit song with Jay Z Umbrella that did not fail in having audiences singing along. While the concert was going good an extremely long band change had some patrons filing out of the venue having seen the two International acts. Close to an hour later Ziggy Marley embraced the Jamaican stage after a five-year absence. Ziggy was in his element playing his guitar and singing songs from his Melody Makers days to his latest solo effort Love Is My Religion. Some patrons were well into Ziggyıs performance while others rocked and some obviously wanted the show to continue. Ziggy gave more than half an hourıs worth of songs before making way for his brothers at minutes to 5am. Ky-mani, Stephen, Julian and Damian then hit the stage as patrons again moved towards the stage. Singing songs from their father such as War, Roots Rock Reggae and others the brothers were excellent. It was when Damian ŒJunior Gongı Marley took over the mic that the venue exploded with energy. Damian and Stephen got together for Traffic Jam, Beautiful and The Mission that had hands flying in the air. He also touched on Pimperıs Paradise and Welcome to Jamrock before welcoming Mykal Rose on stage for their song Shoot Out. The energy on stage at this point was explosive as they wined down and droves of patrons left the venue after the Marleyıs performance. For those that stayed after 6am there were more surprises from spectacular artistes. The showings from the remaining artistes were short with many performing about three tracks each. Elephant Man performed to recorded tracks, with Chris Brown as his surprise guest. A smiling Brown took off his shirt to showcase his toned body to the pleasure of the women. Short but electrifying stints then followed from Spragga Benz, Etana, Lutan Fyah, Richie Spice and Tarrus Riley who mixed Bob Marleyıs music into his song Backbiter. Sizzla gave a more extended showing at the end, combining with Capleton to close off the concert. As Bobıs legend continues, Smile Jamaica will return on February 28, 2009.back to top <#top> It takes time to build a Pyramid In order to do anything great you have to have a wide base. Now, that is one truth that cannot be disputed however the real trick it seems is acquiring that base in order build something worthwhile. Pyramid Entertainment Management Inc is one company which has used this method with great success. Started in 2003 by Santia Bradshaw and Jerome Hamilton, Pyramid specializes in artiste management and bookings for artistes from various genres which include soca, reggae and alternative music. Pyramid is not only concerned with the development of the Bajan culture but the culture of the wider Caribbean, as they were the ones responsible for hosting the Barbados Music seminars in 2006 and 2007, in Barbados, specifically aimed at artiste development, innovations and other issues which affect the regional music industry. More recently, Pyramid has through several ventures in 2007 made significant moves to promote the many artistes on their roster. Early in the year, the Pyramid company launched the Pyramid Music Group, a music content label which has the added responsibility of producing music videos and entertainment programmes. The groupıs first video production was the incredibly successful Woman By My Side by Pyramid artiste Peter Ram. Since then their production credits have included: Beautiful Surprise by Philip 7, From this Day on by Kitorah, Soca Junkie by Mr. Dale, Pumpin by Peter Ram, Nah Going Home by Biggie Irie, Caan Wait and Girls Gone Wild by Lil Rick. The last five soca videos were actually done by Jamaican video director Jay Will who chaired the promotional tools / media workshop at the music seminar in February, 2007. Pyramid also, with the help of Sesame Flyers International, created the Pyramid music truck specifically for the 2007 New York Labour Day parade. Based on the overwhelming success of that venture for the 2008 edition of the T & T carnival, Pyramid Entertainment with the help of the mas band Tribe unveiled the Pyramid "All Star" music truck. This again proved to be a brilliant move by the group as their truck was one of the stars of the T & T carnival with many observers, regional and international flocking to the "All Star" truck for a chance to be near the truckıs featured artistes: Biggie Irie, Mr. Dale, Peter Ram and Trinidadian guests Bunji Garlin and his wife Faye-Ann Lyons. The Pyramid group has also erected a 20ı X 8ı double sided billboard on the east/west corridor of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway which reads ³From Carnival to Crop Over" and features images of four of the Barbadian superstars on the Pyramid roster, Biggie Irie, Lil Rick, Mr. Dale and Peter Ram. This is a move that could not only help these artistes but the general festival culture of Barbados as even the visitors to the island will be made aware of these artistes and their music. Overall, Pyramid Entertainment Management Inc has shown itself to be a company which is probably the only one of its kind in Barbados and the Caribbean. Never before has a regional company tried to innovate the concept of artiste promotion and development in this way both within the region and beyond. Pyramid seems to be clearly determined to use the base they have created for their artistes to springboard the culture of the Caribbean to the international success it has been denied for years. I for one hope they succeed.back to top <#top> "Why is Elephant Man On The Cover of BACKAYARD?" "Oh where or where has my BACKAYARD gone, oh where oh where could it be?" "Weh the new issue deh yo?" "It's been a while since I've seen BACKAYARD magazine!" These are just a few friendly comments from well-wishers and genuinely concerned subscribers emailing and calling to find out where BACKAYARD has gone? Realistically, BACKAYARD is always around-- at the clubs, launch events, reggae shows, even the 'round the way Bar Mitzvah if there's free food and reggae there-- no worries though, the new issue is here and, yea, we have Elephant Man on the cover. The funny thing about being away from the lime light for a while is that you get a chance to look at the world objectively, give new beginnings a chance, and focus on your craft, whatever that may be. The flipside of literary dormancy is the high expectancy of top-grade quality accompanied by the familiar taste our subscribers adore. So one might ask, "Why is Elephant Man on the cover of BACKAYARD?" Well, why not?! It seems like when an artiste or anyone goes 'cold turkey' and takes a vacation from their art, the masses assume that they have sunken into a deep whole with Elmo the Ostrich to keep them company. But just like Elephant Man, BACKAYARD has been through a few hurricanes and emerged with positive developments. We might not be signed to 'Bad Boy Records' like some people, but we finally have our new issue out and so does Elephant Man. . Source: BACKAYARD Magazine Check them out here back to top <#top> The rise of Equiknoxx The music industry is the type of business which can strain, or even destroy, the best of relationships. The main reason seems to be people understanding their role within the grand scheme of things as the nature of man is to always to look out their own personal interests. That is why the collective nature of the members of the Equiknoxx label is so surprising. Who ever heard of five young men coming together to build a business from scratch with each one knowing their function and sticking to it in order to achieve overall success? This is extremely rare as many companies both within and outside of the music industry have been built with a revolving door of principal characters aiding their development. However the Equiknoxx label is different as the five members have differing parts to play and each understands the importance of the other. Nicholas Deane, Derrick Coffie, Omari Fearon, Ricardo Martin and Gavin Blair have regarded each other as friends from their days at Wolmers Boys School and for some of them their introduction to music began from that point. Gavin, for instance, was known as ³Cassette Blair² while in school for his mix-tape business. This came out of his having to dub off music from the radio for his half-sister in New York who had in fact paid for Gavin to deliver to her Stone Love cassettes but he ended up ³nyaming it off² the money. Derrick always had affiliation with the various sound systems and their owners who were originally from Wolmers from Felony to Chromatic. The others came to music a little later in their life. Nicholas, for instance only started production after gaining experience touring Canada as DJ in his second year of college. Since ı99 they have been building tracks for artistes with their most famous compositions being Step Out by Busy Signal and Walk Out on Beenie Manıs Undisputed album. However in 2008 and beyond, their focus will be building up their name in the industry by getting more credit for their work beginning with Drop The Needle a single on Rihannaıs Bajan labelmate Shontelleıs album Shontelligence. So serious is their focus that Equiknoxx has recently completed the building of their own state of the art studio which has made production for the group much easier plus giving them the potential to help aspiring artistes achieve success. Equiknoxx is a prime example to everyone that sometimes maintaining friendships can successful business relationships. The collaborative efforts of PanCaribbean Financial Services Limited (PCFS) and the National Health Fund (NHF) will see the NHF matching $1 for every $1 raised at the corporate run. ³The main goal of the run is two-fold as we sought to contribute to more than one institution whilst increasing the amount the charity receives,² explains Melissa Crooks, Manager, Marketing Division, PCFS. She adds, ³The partnership with the NHF was deliberate due to their continued excellent work since inception, with the promotion of the awareness of health needs.² According to Rosemarie Lee, Public Information Officer at the NHF, ³The first time partnership is in keeping with the mandate of the NHF which is to reduce the burden on the healthcare sector by supporting improvements in health benefits, access to medical treatment and preventive care in Jamaica, as such we threw our full support behind the initiative without any reservations.² Last yearıs event generated roughly $4 million in support so based on the projections for this year the NHF is anticipating matching somewhere in the region of $5 million which will enhance the dialysis units at the Kingston Public Hospital, Cornwall Regional Hospital and the University Hospital of the West Indies. ³The monies will support programmes to provide improved services with kidney failure by purchasing new units to augment units already in operation,² Ms. Lee notes. Currently the Kingston Public Hospital has 15 functional units, 13 units are at the University Hospital of the West Indies whilst 12 units are at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. The Pan Caribbean Sigma Corporate run takes place on Sunday March 9 beginning on Knutsford Boulevard and culminating at the Emancipation Park. Registration for company teams end on Wednesday February 27 while individual registration closes on Friday February 29. back to top <#top> Marleys to rock Miami Long live Bob Marley! The music legend received the Reggae Icon Award posthumously Sunday during the 2008 Reggae Academy Awards. His widow, Rita Marley, accepted the award, held at Jamaica's National Indoor Sport Centre in Kingston, from Prime Minister Bruce Golding. The first-time event coincided with what Golding dubbed National Reggae Month in Jamaica. Another blowout event, the Smile Jamaica Africa-Unite concert on James Bond Beach Saturday, lasted almost 12 hours. Rita Marley thanked international hotelier Chris Blackwell for believing in her husband and helping to launch the reggae singer to stardom. She remembers people warning Blackwell about trusting musicians from Trench Town, a ghetto in west Kingston. ``Don't give those guys any money. If you give them money, you will never see them again.'' Blackwell's bet was right, and he was recognized by the academy with an award, presented by the island's minister of culture, youth and sports, Olivia Grange. Grammy-winning reggae/pop superstar Shaggy won best dance hall album for Intoxication; he said he believes the event will put local artists on the world stage. Flamboyant model/singer/actress Grace Jones was seen in the audience. Missing was Sean Paul (Henriques), who was on the program to present the Best International Artist award. By the end of the weekend, Jamaicans saw four separate performances by Bob's son Ziggy Marley, who performed solo, with the Melody Makers and the other Marley sons -- Damian, Kymani, Stephen and Julian. He also gave an acoustic guitar performance of his hit Love is My Religion Sunday at the awards. Miamians will have a chance to see the Marley brothers -- sans Ziggy -- at 1 p.m. Saturday March 1 at Bayfront Park, during the 15th annual Caribbean Festival. Tickets are $35, along with four canned goods. Stephen Marley said Miami holds sentimental ties for him, since his grandmother has a home here, and his father spent time here before he died. He said fans should expect a spectacular performance. ''Come and celebrate the life of my father,'' he said. ``Bring your family, comfortable shoes, and a change of [clothes] 'cause we are going to get hot!'' But of course all this is not news to her many fans on the European side and certainly not to the man who discovered how sharp she could be on stage when he toured in 2002 with her in England. The No Joke Entertainment and VP Records "Education is No Joke" School tour continued to blaze a trail last week with some of Jamaica's top entertainers visiting their Alma Maters. The main aim of the "Education Is No Joke" school tour is to sensitize students as to the importance of a good education and motivate them to adopt positive lifestyles. With the help of sponsors such as Arctic Ice, the tour has been reuniting some of Jamaica's most popular artistes with their Alma Maters and the impact has been phenomenal. International dancehall star and Jamaican recording artist Sean Paul, visited his former high school, Wolmer's Boys on Tuesday February 19 and based on reports from students and teachers, the visit was a hit. Sean Paul disembarked the Infinity Tours bus and received a good welcome from the Wolmer's family; he focused his talk to the boys on the importance of a good education. At Wolmer's Sean Paul presented himself as a father figure instilled in the boys the importance of respecting each other. Students had numerous questions for the artiste and Sean answered them with maturity and showed his immense knowledge of the current issues affecting the students. At Wolmer's Sean maintained the theme of the Wysinco and Logostich sponsored "Education is No Joke" School Tour and emphasized that without a good education there can be no real success. Sean Paul throughout his talk to the boys at Wolmer's credited his success to the good foundation he received at Wolmer's; he emphasized the importance of good values and politeness as keys to success. To top off his visit to his old school, Sean Paul gave prizes to the most improved students, signed autographs and posed for pictures with some of his young fans. "We are very happy that Sean Paul took time out to talk to us today. This shows us that he cares about his young fans and that he understands the importance of education" - A student for Wolmer's The No Joke entertainment "Education is no Joke" School tour has over the past two weeks been bringing some of Jamaica's best known role models who have maintained a positive image in the music to influence students in a positive way. In this light the Cooyah and Hype TV supported tour co-opted the help of Voicemail to deliver their positive message to three schools. On Wednesday February 20 Craig visited his old school Jamaica College, O'Neil dropped by Kingston College and Kevin gave his talk at Calabar High. Voicemail commended the boys of all three schools on their successes in academics and sports but maintained that this good trend must continue. Voicemail also focused on the need for unity between all three schools and stated that recent incidents between students from the three schools were not positive and put the institutions in a bad light. They stated that even though all members of Voicemail were from different schools they came together to do something positive. "We came together and created something positive even though we are all from three traditional rivals. In the end it does not matter which school you are from, you still have work with people from different walks of life to be successful" - O'Neil Edwards, Voicemail Member. The ³Education is No Joke² School ends this week with visits two schools from the corporate area. The tour over the past three weeks has been working hard to fulfil its mandate of bringing a positive message to the young fans of the music. The "Education is No Joke" tour has also been able to lift the spirits of the students by facilitating the surprise visits of some of their favourite artistes and role models. In his song If I Had the World he gives an insight into the role cocaine played in his life ³you drive away the pain from me, sometimes youıre like cocaine baby.ı Heıs alleged to have wasted huge sums of money on drugs, and his public denials earned him the empathy of many admirers. He denied it in an interview with a Jamaican newspaper, saying ³I would be persona non grata if I used drugs.² Drugs affected his performance and punctuality. Opening for Peter Tosh on the 43rd St Pier in New York City in 1983, his backing band, on the show the Inner Circle, had to carry much of the show without his lead because he arrived on stage with only enough time to sing three songs. Tosh reportedly was upset with him. He made numerous attempts to beat his drug addiction, but was never quite able to rid himself of his demons. A kind soul, Brown could not say no, even times when he should have. His warm smile and instant accessibility to his fans made him possibly the most loved entertainer in the history of Jamaican music. This was also another significant factor in his career decline. Brown was charitable, and did not value material things. He gave away more money than he spent on himself. There were leeches and parasites who took him for a ride and he knew it, but he never stopped them. He loved the fans and was happiest when he entertained them. He love to sing and came alive when he did. His life was dedicated to music and to the fans, whose adoration and approval he desperately craved. . Growing up poor, rejected and estranged from his famous father, who starred in the Jamaican TV series "Hopeful Village² Brown took comfort in his music, women and possibly drugs. They were the constants of his life. As I look back at the "boy wonder" that was kicked out of Central Branch School for ganja smoking, for not doing his homework because he was out fronting the Falcons band the night before, I could never have dreamed he would become reggaeıs most outstanding vocalist, our musicı Œultimate stylistı or that he, with his songs would have made millions happy the world over. I could never have dreamt this ending. I remember the hurt in his eyes when asked, "Where is your father?" I felt the same because I didn't know where mine was either. In our infrequent conversations over the years, as journalist and singer, we both remarked constantly how amazed we were at how big the music became. Neither one of us ever dreamt in those days, this could not happen with our music, nor could we envision the important role he would play in it. Well, it was because of your contribution Dennis, the world of music is much better place. And, thought the land of your birth which you gave your voice, sweat and life to establish Jamaicaıs place on the global cultural map, does not see fit to appropriately honor you and your legacy, rest assured we, the millions around the world, who you gave so much joy and happiness to, do. Happy 51st Birthday Crown Prince, we salute you. Good Night Sweet Prince. The above is an updated edition of an article which was published in UNFOLD magazine at the time of his death in 1999 Source: Stan Evan Smith back to top <#top> Makeda Solomon to sing for Lena, again On March 5 1945, Lena Baker was executed in Georgia, USA. Now, 60 years later, Montego-based actress Makeda Solomon has answered a calling that gave a voice to the silenced woman, through a captivating one-woman play commemorating her life and tragic death. ³Who Will Sing For Lena?² written by Atlanta based playwright Janice Liddell was performed, in an unprecedented simultaneous World Premier, by selected actresses in different parts of the world. Solomonıs selection marked a first for Jamaica in an international project of this kind, and was launched on March 11 2005. Solomon reprises her role as Lena on Friday March 7, Saturday March 8 and Sunday March 9 at the Pantry Playhouse and then again at Fairfield Theatre on Friday March 14 & Saturday March 15. ŒWho Will Sing for Lena?ı tells the sometimes graphic story of the only woman ever to be executed by electric chair in Georgia, for killing a white man who had persistently abused and raped her. Baker maintained it was self-defense to the very end, but a miscarriage of justice saw her being put to death by a brutal system. Lenaıs family and members of the Baptist church she attended, continue their battle with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to clear her name. A petition to be signed by patrons forms part of this production. There is no doubt that audiences will be moved by Liddellıs vivid account of Lenaıs story and Solomon, the current holder of the Actor Boy Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role, with a 20 year theatre career, was Liddellıs clear choice for the Jamaican presentation. Liddell saw her versatility and range when she recently played African-American, Aisha in Liddellıs play ŒHairpeaceı. Liddell had flown to Jamaica to see her play performed by the MLTM cast, directed by Fabian Thomas. When Solomon declared that she was seeking the challenge a one-woman show as her next project, Liddell wasted no time in sending her the newly finished script for ³Who Will Sing For Lena?² Theatregoers, particularly in the Western region, will attest Solomonıs ability to present authentic sounding world accents and dialects. A part in the award winning review Voices written by Fabian Thomas saw Solomon perform a piece in the voices of African, Indian, English, and Jamaican women plus, quite fitting for the Lena role, a young girl from Americaıs deep south. Audiences across the island can expect a powerful piece of theatre as Solomon has teamed up with accomplished actress, radio and TV presenter and veteran broadcaster Fae Ellington O.D., who will make her debut in the directorıs chair. Heavyweight Ellington, also an Actor Boy awardee, was the immediate choice for Solomon to have in her corner. Both women are fans of the others work and having worked together on Fabian Thoması 2003 ŒTwo For Oneı production in Montego Bay, are excited to be working together again on such a dynamic project. ³I was riveted and emotionally moved from the very first reading², Solomon said. ³I knew it was vital that the real struggles of Lena were brought out, and by a strong woman with the correct terms of reference. Fae certainly fits the bill on both counts². Womenıs groups in Jamaica are already responding well to the project given its stark, truthful representations of a problem that sadly continues to plague many countries, including Jamaica. ŒWho will sing for Lena?ı demands that society face the consequences of the continued abuse of its women. Adidas to shine spotlight on Reggae Adidas, the well-known sporting brand, is launching its first ever global campaign for the Adidas Originals lifestyle brand which sports the trefoil logo launched in 1971. According to Mediapost, The campaign involves some short films and one of them, Sounds of the City, will promote a number of Adidas Originals products while spotlighting Reggae from Jamaica. The first film focuses on Adi Dassler, the founder of Adidas and there is a very short clip of Bob Marley, a fitting tribute to the singer who was well-known for loving football (soccer) and wearing Adidas. Check out the film here . Source: Real Vibez back to top <#top> My memories of the Great One: Dennis Brown Dennis Emanuel Brown was the most influential singer in the history of reggae music. All the successful reggae artists tore a page from his singing stylebook. Thus, his was and is the most copied voice in the genre. If Bob Marley is reggae music's "Classical Troubadour," then Dennis Brown is reggae musicıs quintessential singer or as producer/songwriter Mickey Bennett noted ³The reggae singer's singer." Bob Marley introduced reggae music to the world by defining its form, logic, ethos and content, while Brown's vocal styling defined its intimate sound, making him the defining voice of his generation. This is possibly Brownı greatest contribution to the world of music. From Burt Bacharachıs standard Wichita Line Man to root rock message music like Revolution his vocal range covered a wide gamut. Jamaican music still hasnıt seen the likes of him since. Michael ŒIboı Cooper leader of the 3rd World band eloquently summed up Dennisı importance and legacy to the world of music ³Dennis Brown made his mark on musichis music will have an impact on generations to come the way the way Beethoven had an impact on Europe and Fela had an impact on Africa. When the future comes Dennis will be one of the greatest names in music as a whole.² There could be no Sanchez, Luciano, Frankie Paul, Richie Stephens, George Nooks, Bushman or Maxi Priest, to name a few. Priest, when asked by Soul Train's host, Don Cornelius, who was his greatest influence, replied unequivocally "Dennis Brown." Brown, when he was asked who was the single greatest influence on his chosen style of singing, replied, the late Delroy Wilson. In my 1989 interview at the Ritz, New York he spoke of his fascination with Wilson's phrasing and slurring. He also talked about how, in his early years, he practiced to sound like Wilson. Unlike a lot of Jamaica's great singers, many of whom trace their most significant influences to R&B giants (Beres Hammond, for example, is a cross between Sam Cook and Otis Redding, with some Alton Ellis thrown in) Brown sounds like none of them. This, despite his great love of R&B and the standards. I can recall stories by Sax man Tony Green (a member of Lloyd Parks and We the People, Brown's recording and backing band throughout his musical career) of Brown on the tour bus singing hundreds of R&B standards he'd learned growing up. Brownıs life was dedicated to music he loved to sing. Though his commercial hit-making slowed at the twilight of his career, he's the only singer to have completely dominated the reggae charts in the 70 and, the '80s, when the DJ'S ruled. With songs like Have you Ever Been in Love, Revolution, Love's Got a Hold On Me, Hold On to What You Have Got, Sitting and Watching, If I Had the World during the that time, his songs would compete with each other for the number I slot on ethnic charts in major American cities. His last major hit in NY was Stop Fighting So Early in the Morning, from the Willie Lindo-produced album Inseparable, in 1987. While he continued to record, write songs and tour, he never had another hit after that. The highlights of his international career were: Money in My Pocket, his first and only global hit song in the late 70s, charted in Britain and Europe; in the early '80s he signed an international album deal with Herb Alpert's A.M. Records, making him label mates with groups like the Carpenters and UB40. Three albums came out of this association: Foul Play, Love Has Found Its Way, and The Prophet Rises Again. His much-talked-about performance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in 1979 established his credentials as a sterling stage performer. As then We the People sax man Dean "Cannon" Frazer noted, "There was a magic about the whole Dennis Brown experience, you felt like you were going somewhere." He received Grammy nominations for his albums Temperate Rising (Heartbeat Records) in 1994 and, his second posthumously for Let Me Be the One in 2000, for which I wrote the albumsı liner notes. To be continued next week. The tour has been reuniting some of Jamaica's most popular artistes with their Alma Maters and this week surprised the students of three schools in different parts of the island. Browns Town High School was visited on Monday, February 11 by Busy Signal, on Tuesday, February 12 D'Angel visited her Alma Mater, St Catherine High and Jose Marti was visited on Wednesday February 13 by Macka Diamond. The response to the tour has been overwhelming and the welcome from school administrators has been encouraging but even though the artiste did not perform at any of the schools, the students received them very well. The organizers of the Education Is No Joke school tour, VP Records and No Joke Entertainment thought it would be better for the students to talk to their favourite artistes on a personal level and felt that entertainment would overshadow the positive message. The artistes on the tour have been focusing on some of the more troublesome issues facing students and have been using their influence to motivate students to develop positive attitudes towards their academics. D'Angel disembarked the Infinity Tours bus well prepared for the questions posed to her by the students of St Catherine High School. The students fielded questions on female empowerment plus teenage pregnancy among others and D'Angel was on point in giving positive and uplifting answers. Macka Diamond gave the students of Jose Marti good advice on career choices and spoke to them about the importance of a good education in today's modern world, she also emphasized that without a good education she could not be in the position she is in today. Busy Signal, making his first trip to Browns Town High School since his dancehall ascendancy, provided valuable information to the students about life in the real world and the importance of being grounded and knowing ones priorities. He focused his talk on the importance of education in the modern world and at the end presented some of the most improved students with prizes in the form school stationary and music paraphernalia. Source: Alykhat back to top <#top> A Rebellion with Soul Jamaica has had a profound influence in the development of popular culture in the United States. The genres of hip-hop, rap, punk, alternative rock, and some forms of electronic dance music can all trace its influences and origins to Jamaica, and its groundbreaking music studios and producers such as King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry. Jamaican music, dance, fashion, and the concept of the sound clash, which gave roots to rap and hip-hop, all have left their mark abroad. Soul Rebellion, the festival with a cause, taps into this legacy imbedded in our cultural landscape by such legendary icons as the worldıs beloved Bob Marley. The thousands of visiting spring breakers provide a platform on which to express this legacy, as Soul Rebellion 2008 swings back into action during Spring Break this March in Negril, Jamaica. This charitable event, which stages fundraising shows, distinguishes itself as a concept more than a concert. ³Soul Rebellion serves to re-invest Jamaica and her rich and vibrant culture back into the spring break dynamic by tracking, exploring, and illuminating the cultural conversation taking place between Jamaica and American street culture,² states Richard Sloan of Soul Rebellion. This yearıs events are slated for every Tuesday during the month of March, with stage shows taking place at the Jungle Nightclub in Negril. This is followed by daytime activities that include visits to local schools where spring breakers can participate in the ³Buy-A-Brick² program and literally rebuild local schools. One of the shows, slated for Tuesday March 18, will be headlined by arguably the hottest act in dancehall right now, Mavado. Soul Rebellionıs vision is in sync with Mavadoıs own initiative to aid education in his homeland, thru his charity Connect Jamaica where he donates computers to local schools. A number of Jamaican entertainment heavyweights are working to help make this yearıs event a success, including Tony Matterhorn, Julian Jones-Griffith of the Alliance (home to Mavado), Janet Davidson of Madhouse Records (home to Baby Cham), Don Corleon of Don Corleon Records (home to Munga, Pressure and Alaine), and Jerome Hamilton of Headline Entertainment (booking agency for most Jamaican entertainers including Sean Paul). As a result, more additions to the lineup will soon be announced for Soul Rebellion 2008. Soul Rebellion will also play host to a number of international media houses, wishing to provide coverage of this festival that directly aids the local community. The Power Link is a simulcast of "Perkins online," Jamaica's longest running talk show teaming up with LinkUp Radio's broadcaster David "Squeeze" Annakie at 12:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays in New York on LinkUp Radio 93.5FM. Listeners in New York can now ask questions, share comments and give suggestions as to what is happening in Jamaica on a global perspective. The show was brokered by Charles Spence General Manager of Sales and Marketing, N.A. JN Money Transfer in the USA. JN Money Transfer is the official sponsor of the show. About the Host Wilmot Motty Perkins: Perkins is the longest serving Talk Show Host on Jamaican radio, having hosted his first program "What's your Grouse" on RJR in 1960. He had a short break from the airwaves a few years later, during which he went into farming. Motty returned to radio in the 70s, as host of JBC's popular call-in programme "Public Eye." He later hosted "Hot Line" on JBC and then "Straight Talk" on KLAS FM, before hosting "Perkins On Line" on Hot 102FM. Perkins came to POWER106 in April 2002, with his probing interviews and keen analyses of pertinent matters which continue to make for compulsive listening. Perkins on Line' is spirited interaction with callers on a wide range of topics. It is described by many as "The Poor Man's University." A typical caller will often attribute his or her widening knowledge of events happening in and outside of Jamaica to the information garnered from just listening to these broadcasts. Host, Wilmot "Motty" Perkins says the underlying intent of the program is to, "focus public attention on the gaping hiatus between what is and what might be, and to do it within a broad framework that embraces not only the history of Jamaica, but the history of mankind." There are some who often disagree with his point of view on issues. However, Motty revels in controversy and these calls add spice. Given the stated intent of the program, Motty says ''if people really think about it, they might discover that 'Perkins on Line ' is more profoundly positive than negative." That's why it is called the "Thinking Persons' Call-In Show". The program is broadcast Monday - Friday , 10:00 am - 2:30 pm on Power 106 fm in Jamaica. Unlike other reggae download stores, www.planetreggae.com is available worldwide in more than 50 local currencies. It also offers exclusive downloads from prominent artists and weekly promotions. Chris Chin, CEO of VP Records, commented: "I am very happy to work with all of the catalogs that we have historically distributed as vinyls, then CDs and now as digital downloads. VP is in a unique position to bring those catalogs into the digital future and we hope to add other important catalogs soon." We started as a small retail store in Kingston Jamaica exactly 50 years ago and we now have a virtual digital download store. We always want to keep a direct link with our fans and customers. From retail store to virtual store in 50 years, more than the changes in the music industry, it shows the lasting power of reggae music." Olivier Chastan, Vice President of International, concluded: "The first few weeks have been very exciting. G Maffiahıs mix tape is already creating a buzz in the streets of Jamaica. Released first in France and Germany by DJ Weedim from Straight Up sound, the mix tape ignited the dancehall community with G Maffiahıs sick flows and crisp quick-tongue verses. ³I got the link to DJ Weedim and Bus Eye through Bonez, that is Pantherıs son, and I got together my songs, choosing tracks that represent the essence of who G Maffiah is, my autobiographical experiences, my philosophies on how to survive in a hostile environment, and how to navigate life, and the feedback has been incredible, especially on my Myspace page,² he said. The mix tapeıs success inspired Kingston 6 head honchos Akil ³Akiliboy² Smith and Lorenzo ³Akono² Lewis to authorize the reproduction of almost 50,000 mix tapes for distribution in Jamaica. Free!!!!! Digital download of the mix tape is also available @ www.kingston6.com ³Right now, in 2008, mi come fi take my space, and take what is rightfully mine,² G Maffiah said. G Maffiah has been creating a buzz with songs such as Rising on the Cranberry rhythm, which is getting crazy airplay on local radio. And the mix tape is chock full of hot 16s with quotable rhymes that will have you rewinding and saying Œdid you hear what he just saidı. The streets are raving about his Bag a Noise and The Block where you can hear Maffiahıs dancehall sound riding some amped-up synth-and-drum hip hop rhythms. He uses a complex rhyming scheme and a bass-heavy voice to achieve an adrenaline-rush immediacy on More Money More Gal, while he shows his versatility with a great club banger on Been Through the Worst. The lyrics are the sick immensely quotable lines that make you want to hit the rewind button, and you can feel G Maffiahıs swagger pounding you over the head when he talks about stepping into the club and all eyes turn to him. He describes the scene: Œmi dress code ah say Œwha a gwaan bossı/and mi cologne mek every girl say Œhiı when dem a passı. G Maffiah! deejays over some insanely recognizable samples that show his vocal dexterity and why he is considered by many as the talent to watch for 2008. The mix tapeıs high point is actually Rise It, an early leaked track that had dancehall insiders raving a few weeks ago with Maffiahıs brilliant eloquence and over-the-top tough-talk. He is one of the few dancehall deejays flexible enough to flip rhymes on Southern rap or New York-style beats, and he brings the heat on Donıt You See? with its throwback dirty south beats. There is great pleasure to be had on his champagne-swilling boasts on Invest Inna De Bank, and even on standard guns-and-money-and-drugs tracks like Do It 4 the Cash and Iım a Hustler, he manages to achieve a sort of candidness and honesty that most deejays can only dream about. G Maffiah is a mad-talented deejay who can kick superb rhymes but he has soul. He admits on Do It 4 the Cash that Œah Spanish Town mi born but mi neva choose crime life/music that ah mi life, melody and flow rightı but you believe that if he had chosen the Drug Game, he would have been the best at that too. The mix tape totally free of big-name guest-appearances or cleared samples, but delivers the goods anyway. ³Right now, I am more focused than ever before, I am going harder this year, setting my goals higher while just being myself. I am going to let music be my canvass, yu caan follow other artiste and dem hype, or else you will drift away. I am going to get mine this year,² he said. Mek me tell yu dis.
