Welcome to Jamrock online ... on target When Paula-Anne Porter announced the start of The Gleaner-sponsored 'Welcome to Jamrock' at the Constant Spring football field on Friday, it was a minute before the slated 9:00 p.m. When Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley said goodbye, after his brother Stephen had delivered Could You Be Loved and he had invited "Simone inna me love zone", it was two minutes before the slated 2:00 a.m. end. The audience, most of which was packed into the vast VIP section, had not had enough after 90 Marley minutes. Even as the band was packing up, most stood firmly in place as Porter marshalled the chant 'we want more'. "Officers, no disrespect. We a go do two more tune. A Christmas," Jr. Gong said. Then parts of Road To Zion and Welcome to Jamrock, hit home hard. It was the end of a well- organised, high-quality event which had built momentum from shorter stints by the earlier performers, Javaughn singing of Peer Pressure and taking over instruments from members of C Sharp band to show his skills on keyboards, drums (singing "do rocksteady" to cheers at the same time) and bass guitar. Etana stepped out in black to the first line of Wrong Address and the audience swayed along to her declaration of Warrior Love. Eyes closed and standing front and centre, Etana was melodiously defiant as she sang "I am not afraid, if dem a come, mek dem come". Saying that she had something special and a little bit different for the audience, she sat for part of her examination of the news, dancers holding up large protest signs. Swam King on Gully Bank sound system came before cheers for Rootz Underground began high-energy, extended songs, accentuated by the skanking frenzy of the lead singer and electrifying guitars. Their observation that "time is an illusion" fused into Victims of the System, three members coming front and centre and high-stepping in time to a dancehall- style mix as they sang in unison. They closed with a song for those living on the streets, wondering "how much longer will we waste away on the side of the road". Tarrus Riley walked out to screams, singing "the man who thinks he's larger than life", moving easily onstage as he warned of the Friend Enemy and Beware, which got the first restart as he said "warm and easy". And when he changed the song's lyrics to "put a fia pon de man dem inna belly skin" the hands and voices went up. Lion Paw went out against 'bad mind' and, saying that love songs are forever, Riley crooned of "more than a million reasons to quit", honouring Beres Hammond with a line of Groovy Little Thing. There was a delightful touch of No One in Stay With You and dancers came up for the closing, climatic She's Royal. By the advertised show time of 7 PM, a strong crowd had already poured into the venue, Independence Park, to watch the impressive cadre of performers which host G T Taylor had secured for the event. The audience seemed delighted and impressed with the first class stage, light and sound and equally pleased with the carefully managed performances. The quick progression from one artiste to another and from one band to another made for a smooth concert. The ladies on stage represented well, with stand out performances from Queen Ifrica, CeıCile and Macka Diamond. Singers made their mark as well, notably Tarrus Riley, Freddy McGregor and Christopher Martin all had the ladies swooning. Not to be out done, deejays Munga, Sizzla and Capelton infused new energy into a welcoming audience, while singjays Movado and Chuck Fenda impressed as well. The excitement offered by the artiste performances was matched by the excitement created by the Magnum ladies as they joined selected artistes on stage. Clad in bright red and green custom made outfits carefully cut the reveal their assets, the Mangum ladies shimmered, shacked and rocked themselves in full view of an appreciative crowd. Though all the performances were tight, the sheer number of stellar reggae artistes made for a long night of entertainment. Patrons needing extra energy flocked to the bar to pick up Magnum Tonic Wine Drink specials by the bucket load through out the night. The well lit ideally located bars kept the Magnum flowing cold all night and into the morning. Beenie Man brought the sun, and the large and lively crowd eagerly greeted him with a Magnum in one hand and red, green and gold flags on another; a fitting end to a excellent event, Mangum Tonic Wine G T Taylor's Christmas Reggae Extravaganza.back to top <#top> 'Africa Unite' film gears up for release The documentary Africa Unite had its official world premiere in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia this past September. Award-winning filmmaker Stephanie Black and Executive Producer Rita Marley returned to Addis, where in 2005, 300,000 people from across the globe helped the Marley family celebrate Bob Marley's 60th birthday with a massive, outdoor concert. The Saturday September 15, 2008 screening--the Ethiopian calendar is based on an ancient Egyptian system and Ethiopian dates fall seven to eight years behind western dates--was hosted by President Negasso Gidada at the National Palace and coincided with Ethiopia's celebration of the millennium. The 2005 concert was the realization of an ambitious vision of unity building that Bob preached about when he himself performed his historic 1980 Zimbabwe concert. The Africa Unite foundation, founded by the Marley family to promote pan-Africanism, organized the week-long celebration and sponsored the attendance of students from African countries like Ghana and Kenya as well as Rastas from the countryside of Jamaica for a conference and continuing dialogue. While the film is anchored by the marathon Marley benefit concert in historic Mesker Square in Addis Ababa, there are parallel narratives that help to create a fuller picture of Bob Marley's personal dream of a Pan-African movement on the continent and throughout the Diaspora. Ras "Bongo" Tawney, featured in Black's award winning documentary Life and Debt, begins his sojourn in the humble hills of Jamaica, complete with a Nyabingi send off. "I will tell the whole Rasta community [of my trip]," he promises as his neighbors line the countryside dirt road to see his cab off. His journey is a spiritual one and brings him to tears often. "It meant so much to me that Ras Tawney was able to make the trip," says Stephanie Black. "It was really more of a sojourn. It meant everything to him, as you can see in the film. If there had been money to send his wife and family, I'm absolutely certain his trip would have been one way." Tawney's recollections of the early and severe discrimination that Rastas faced on the island make clear how far the Rastafarian movement has really traveled. He remembers when merely wearing dreadlocks was considered not fashion, but a crime. Ironically, even when a group of Rastas who'd traveled from Shashamane, a village in the interior of Ethiopia that HIM Selassie gifted to a community of Rasta repatriates, to the airport in Addis to greet Mother Cedella Booker for the February 2005 celebration, they were turned away by airport security. "I didn't include it in the film," says Black. "But it was a reminder of the struggle Rastas have in terms of discrimination. That's why the screening at the Palace [in September of â08] was so important. Rita invited the entire Shashamane community and the respect and love the President showed them was such an honor, so healing. After the film, President Gidada told us Africa Unite would be screened at schools throughout the country, that'd it would be used as an educational tool to teach children about Bob and the Rastafarian movement." The series follows the second-youngest son of musical icon Bob Marley as he prepares for the release of his hit new album, Radio, reprises his starring film role as "Biggs" in the upcoming sequel to the critically-acclaimed cult favorite movie Shottas, and hits concert stages for the dynamic and captivating performances that have helped make Marley a quickly-rising pop star and won him the prestigious opening slot on the headline-making North American tour by Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Meanwhile, Radio held the #1 slot on Billboard's Top Reggae Albums chart for two weeks running. It topped the chart week of release, ironically unseating his father's Best Of collection that had held the top slot for a number of preceding weeks. The video for his song One Time has also been added to the playlist of VH1 Soul. Living The Life Of Marley is indeed a "reality" series, showing Marley in his home base of Miami, where the Jamaica-born son of Bob Marley and table tennis champion Anita Belnavis moved to when he was nine years old. "The show touches a little bit on how I was raised in the inner-city ghetto," explains Ky-Mani. "I was growing up in a two-bedroom place with nine people. It explains a bit of why I am the way I am, the way I am musically. I have a lot to talk about. It exposed being a Marley, that we are normal as everyone else. We have a great legacy to carry on and a loving family." Radio features the single One Time as well as the track I'm Back with guest Young Buck and contributions from such other artists as Mya and Gail Gotti. The album's key tracks also include two mixes of his antiwar anthem The March. Ky-Mani Marley is the first major artist signed to the new independent label Vox Music Group, distributed by AAO Music. He is none other than Billy Ocean, one of the headline acts billed for the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival in January 2008. No stranger to sold-out shows and hit performances, Billy Ocean is promising his best for Jamaica when he makes his debut in Montego Bay. The R&B crooner was the talk of the Kings of Soul show held in Ocho Rios and Kingston for Father's Day and he is ready and raring to bring his catalogue of hits back to Jamaica for what is being touted as "the best jazz festival ever". "I can't wait to go back to Jamaica. The last show I did there was a tremendous success, the people were so warm and receptive, they knew all my songs, it was a great pleasure for me," Ocean said in a recent interview. Known worldwide for songs like Caribbean Queen, Loverboy, When The Going Gets Tough and Lovezone, Billy Ocean says he is putting together a performance like no other for his Jamaican fans. "I will be giving them the best of the best, the biggest hits like Caribbean Queen, but will also be adding new songs like I Can't Take It, reggae song called Live Forever and a calypso tune Everything To Me are just two of the other new songs I want to share with the audience," he added. The songs Suddenly and There'll Be Sad Songs made Billy Ocean one of the finest balladeers of our time and secured him a number of accolades for his contribution to music. "I have been around a long time in the business and I have heard a lot about the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival. I am really looking forward to it and I can promise that the fans will go away happy," he stated. Delivering the hook is the multi-platinum, Grammy award winning reggae toaster, Sean Paul. On Serious, Sean Paul makes a dramatic departure from his usual up beat topics to highlight the grave dangers of violence. x201CYow, when I heard the beat, the hook came instantly,x201D; Sean Paul explained. Anxious to share the spotlight, Sean Paul called on hot dancehall deejay, Busy Signal. x201CI was at home when Sean called me and played the beat. We met up at the studio that same afternoon to lay the track,x201D; elaborated Busy Signal. In Busyx2019;s verse, he endorses Seanx2019;s chorus to emphasise the point that x201C;gun tx2019;ing a nuh joke tx2019;ingx201D;. Sean Paul describes himself as a Busy Signal fan, while Busy has long admired Seanx2019;s humble demeanour. A collaboration between the two was overdue. Serious, the debut collaboration between the two artistes was produced by another young talent, News. Son of Michigan from the duo Michigan and Smiley, News received the completed track and played it for hip hop star, Busta Rhymes, who added a verse for the remix. The powerhouse combination of Sean Paul, Busy Signal and Busta Rhymes is making its way onto radio playlists even before it has officially been released. There is no word on when fans can get their own copies of Serious, but until then frequent calls to radio stations is sure to speed up the process. back to top <#top> Christopher's Christmas Treat Children and residents of the Back Pasture and neighbouring communities in St. Catherine received a well needed Christmas treat thanks to Big Yard Recording artiste, Christopher Martin. The afternoon treat for 250 children took place at the Watermount All Age School. Toys, ice cream, pop corn and food were distributed to those in attendance. The children were entertained by a clown, a train, a merry-go-round and bounce-a-bout while singer Christopher Martin acted as Master of Ceremonies. DJ Speng's Emphatic Disco kept the vibes going through out the treat. "I am just overjoyed that I am in a position to give back to a community which has given me so much support," explained Christopher Martin when asked what was the motivation behind the treat. In an effort to expand the treat further, Christopher received assistance from sponsors Grace Kennedy and Jamaica Broilers.back to top <#top> Rihanna sets the trend "SHE'S GOT THE MIX of being super-sweet and edgy cool plus she's insanely gorgeous. Who else could be our No. 1 girl?" That's not all. When she steps out, as was seen in her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, she arrives at every event "looking hot". That's how this month's Seventeen, the internationally circulated fashion, beauty and youth lifestyle monthly magazine that's read around the world by at least a million souls, across North America and Europe describes Rihanna, the Bajan pop star who is now one of the hottest artistes in the world of entertainment. Little wonder, then, that Seventeen placed her on its cover and went a step further and made her the glossy publication's "first ever Seventeen Style Star Of The Year," a move that's obviously designed to capitalize on her worldwide popularity. "If you had to describe Rihanna in one word, what would it be? Obviously beautiful would be the first to jump to mind it's no wonder she has a major deal with CoverGirl (cosmetics line)," stated the magazine that targets the under 30s. "Sexy would definitely be near the top of the list; only her version is sophisticated, not shanky." Quite a description for a 19-year-old, who three years ago was unknown even in her native Barbados but is riding the wave of international interest not only for her music but for style, fashion and appeal. But that's not too difficult to understand. After all, in the 36 months since bursting onto the global pop music scene, her songs have sold almost ten million copies; she has captured two MTV awards and recently was nominated for six Grammy awards. "The fact that the tabloids never have any nasty rumours to report about her really shows that she's someone worth admiring," the publication added. "But above all else, Rihanna has been the ultimate style icon the girl knows fashion, only she never looks like she's trying too hard." In the story, complete with photos of her in different outfits, Rihanna talked about her style in clothes "I like to switch it up, to take risks and be extremely edgy. I don't like to follow trends as much as I like to set trends." And that certainly includes her hair style "my hairdresser keeps telling me that people come into the salon and are like: 'I want the Rihanna cut.' I'm like really? It's good when something comes from inside the person." Saturday January 5 will see the beginning of a new chapter in the history of dancehall music in Jamaica when the much touted and highly anticipated Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will premiere at 9 pm on TVJ. The competition will feature a bevy of talented princes and princesses vying for the title, Magnum Kings and Queens ofDancehall. Dancehall music's popularity transcends the shores of Jamaica and the Caribbean and has, since the eighties, been able to conquer new markets such and the United States and Europe. The popularity of dancehall music has been further reinforced by the success of contemporary acts such as Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Baby Cham who all followed on the groundbreaking success of Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton. Whilst the success of dancehall has been commendable, there is still need for further growth in the Genre. It is also clear that aspiring deejay's and singjays have great difficulty in finding avenues to expose their talent and capabilities. It is based on these factors that Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall was created. "This show is important because it will unearth and showcase indigenous new talent. Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is a dancehall extravaganza that presents a good opportunity to anyone, male or female, who think they can deejay or sinjay to 'buss out' onto the music scene" - Mark Kenny, Executive Producer. Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will run from Saturday the 5th of January to Saturday, April 12, 2008 on TVJ. The first leg of the competition which runs from Saturday January 5 to Saturday February 2 will feature auditions from 5 towns: Savanna-la-Mar, Mandeville, Ocho Rios, Portmore and Kingston with the public getting the opportunity to choose the top prince and princess for each week. The voting lines will open on the Saturday night of the show and close on the Friday evening of the following week. The public will be able to vote either by voice or text at the cost of J$20 from any phone on all networks. Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is a new and different kind of competition because it encompasses all major aspects of dancehall culture. The competition will highlight the history, culture and nature of the Genre. "We want to showcase all aspects of dancehall, we want to show that it is not only about music and being on stage but it's also a movement and a lifestyle that uses fashion, comedy and dance to set itself apart from other forms of musical expression" - Natalie Parboosingh, Promoter. In many ways Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will be a big step forward for the music: never before has there been a competition dedicated to unearthing new talent while giving them the opportunity to emerge as Kings & Queens of the Dancehall. Unlike any other competition there will be equal opportunity provided on the stage to both male and female contestants. At the end of the show there will be two winners: one King and one Queen, another first for Jamaica. On Saturday January 5 Jamaica will be able to begin choosing who they think are the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall. Anybody can win and everybody has an equal opportunity to 'buss'. back to top <#top> Confessions and Statement Now Available for Digital Download Gash Dem was the controversial and critical hit for Chuck Fender on the provocative Confessions album. She continues "I am not going to call their names but I am going to call them in, because I have a stake in the music and I have a stake in Jamaica, just as they have," she said. Grange asuggest that "when an artiste gets on stage and talks war and disrespects women, don't applaud them". Grange feels the artists know who they are and will be addressed. The International Soca Monarch We Comin! Road tour is taking it to the people. An initiative by the Caribbean Prestige Foundation aimed at bringing the artiste to the fan as opposed to the traditional route of bringing the fan to the artiste. It entails varying combinations of at least two to three artistes travelling around in a bus each day, pausing at various locations throughout the country to meet with fans. At each tour site fans will be greeted by artistes. Each Friday, the tour will touch down at a specific location where artistes will perform their material for 2008. The 2008 edition of the competition is promising to be exciting, with three-time International Soca Monarch Bunji Garlin returning to challenge defending champion, Iwer George. He last competed in 2006, when he placed second to Shurwayne Winchester with ?The Bomb Song?. The preliminary round for the Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competitions are scheduled to take place on January 5 and he semi-final round of the Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competitions are scheduled for January 20. This will be the 16th edition of the International Soca Monarch, the first of which was won by SuperBlue, who is expected to compete next year. Early indications show Blaxx's 'Breathless' to be an early favorite. And speaking of Carnival, King Conris won his second Soca Monarch crown in St Kitts with his Walk Away song. First runner-up was Mentie from the Small Axe Band and Ras Kelly, last year?s champion took the second runner-up position. Wendel Pemberton, who headed the organisation of the competition, said he was very impressed with the performances of the artistes but not the attendance, which he says they are looking to improve. Pemberton goes on to say, 'This is the first time in the history of this competition we had very high standard in the way the artistes performed, and we had artistes from nearly every big band in the Federation, whereas before we usually had mostly calypsonians from the tent.? In some cases some bands even produced two members to compete in the competition. In our new releases this week well it looks like we didnt get any this week. Each week we ask a trivia question first last week we asked, so why were the Gladiators dropped from Virgin? Due to the death of Bob Marley alot labels dropped reggae artists This week we ask, n were the actual days of Rock Steady in Jamaica?
