Moe's Alley this Saturday 1/12/08 2008 Return of the Reggae Heavyweights Overcome a Little Struggle Hey everybody, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you all my thoughts on the intense experience that I had this past year which has allowed me to grow and reflect on what is truly important in life. My close friends and family know, but there are many who may know nothing at all or have heard rumors but don't know all the facts. In March of 2007 I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. The good news: this is one of two "curable" cancers, and after 6 months of treatments I have been declared cancer free! Though I spent the entire summer enduring exhausting chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and severe side effects from some of the chemo drugs, I also managed to find strength and grace through prayer, resolute positivity, and faith that I would make it through. I also gained great comfort throught the use of medicinal marijuana, and am now a true supporter of the cause, having seen first hand what a necessary medicine it is in so many applications. Losing all my hair gave me a new humility and courage that I will carry with me always. More good news: after two more years of clear scans, I will be declared "cured", and already the chances are over 95% that I will never relapse. I want to thank everyone in my family and in the community who helped when help was needed, and who prayed for me or sent cards with encouraging and inspirational words. I love all of you so much. Blessings, Health and Strength to all of you in the New Year Love, Oriana The first singles off our new album - released this month!! SHE'S ROYAL TAURUS CANNONBALL/VP So as a result of our top songs the top artists for the year from 5 to #1 are Movado, Daville, Mr Vegas, Jah Cure & Shaggy is #1. According to Billboard the top selling reggae artist for 2007 is............ Matisyahu while the Marleys round out the top 5 and Sean Paul, Collie Buddz, Buju Banton, Notch & Beenie Man round out the top ten in that order. VP was their top label, our favorite stuff overall was coming out of France from makaSound. My favorite cds came from Jah Cure, David Kirton, Collie Buddz and the top end of the year compilations from VP & Greensleeves. My favorite riddim album was the Guardian Angel while there was more re-released material worth talking about than anything. Other favorite new releases came in the form of the Rastaology DVD & the book 'Reggae Scrapbook.' The highlights in 2007 were few but good last February the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame did a month long celebration for Black History Month that included alot of reggae. My favorite highlight came when Alicia Keys erformed 'No One' at the American Music Awards with Jr Reid, Beenie Man as well as Chaka Demus & Pliers. The observations I concluded on for 2007 were that the Grammys do not want to change & not that they have to but I think the upcoming Reggae Academy Awards in Jamaica will do more justice to the business of reggae. It happens in February which has now been declared reggae month in Jamaica. There was a move towards more originality especially with artists like Tarrus Riley, Duane Stephenson & Etana and a rise in the music from outside of jamaica. We saw Paul McCartney, Akon, Sean Kingston, Mims, Collie Buddz, Alborosie & Pressure rise to this effect. We did loose Lucky Dube, Stanley Beckford, Jah Jerry of the Skatalites & Tyrone Taylor as well as the 7 inch record. Now we look ahead. I do think this last observation of more reggae arising from outside of jamaica will continue will there will also be more of a hybrid/mixing of different musics that will continue to capitalize on the reggae beat. Each week we ask a trivia question first last week we asked, when were the actual days of Rock Steady in Jamaica? The Rock Staedy years in jamaica were 1966-1968 This week we ask, can you trace Daddy U Roys dj schooling? In case you don't know. we will have all that & more on next weeks edition...
