(KUNR 88.7FM Reno) for the year 2007: 1) Stephen Marley Mind Control 2) Jah Cure True ReflectionsŠA New Beginning 3) Tuff Lion Utterance A Testament 4) Ras Shiloh Coming Home 5) Javaughn Superstar 6) Midnite Better World Rasta 7) Malika Madremana Elixir 8) Noiseshaper Real To Reel 9) Mark Wonder Victory The Mystery Unfolds 10) tie‹Toots & The Maytals Light Your Light 10) tie‹Bob Marley & The Wailers Roots, Rock, Remixed Šand here are five more albums that have been riding strong tooŠ 11) Ticklah Ticklah Vs. Axelrod 12) Ishcence Space N Time 13) I Wayne Book Of Life 14) Burning Spear The Burning Spear Experience 15) Corey Harris Road To Zion These charts were compiled tabulating my weekly CMJ reports, with the highest-charting titles reflecting the most entries to the CMJ throughout the year. As always, there are strong showings from debut performers, as they take their places next to reggae legendsŠThe element of dub also weaves its way through the charts, with largely instrumental sounds from Ticklah and Noiseshaper, plus the remixes of the Lee Scratch Perry era Bob Marley classics. Some would argue that these masters should never be touched‹that they are already perfect works of music; however, one of my listeners called saying that Bob sounded good to him in whichever form he came, be it remix or originalŠ Stephen Marley¹s Mind Control was a hugely anticipated release, as I had been spinning advance tracks from the EP got music? since sometime in 2006. The title track, ³Chase Dem² and the ganja anthem ³Traffic Jam² have all been rockin steady here for more than a year. Speaking of singles carrying an album well forward‹True Reflections from Jah Cure is full of the crucial jams that have been booming the soundsytems and radiowaves for well over a year. The release of Jah Cure on 7/29/07 follwed a day later by the release of True Reflections is a delight to all of our ears. The fresh sound of ³To Your Arms Of Love² paired with the old favorite ³Love Is,² all bolstered with the other chart-toppers on the set propelled Cure right to the heights where he will remain for some time to comeŠ Amongst those releases that arrive only after months of great and eager anticipation comes Utterance A Testament from ³The Architecht of the St.Croix sound,² Tuff Lion. Tuff Lion¹s guitar playing, singing, sublime harmonies, and production have blessed an awesome array of the tracks that have risen up from the U.S.V.I., on two of the biggest St.Croix labels: I Grade and Mt. Nebo (and the list grows too). His sound hits hard, while always keepin¹ cool, calm and collected. Midnite¹s Better World Rasta marks the first collaboration of the St.Croix stalwarts with Jamaican producers (Rasstar Records), and is one of at least five releases for Midnite in the year 2007. Drawing upon production from St.Croix (and other links such as California) are both Malika Madremana and Ischence. Malika¹s Elixir (especially the title track) brought in a joyous breath of fresh air everytime it hit the radiowaves. Major props go out to Ryan ³Ishence² Willard, who started his own label (Higher Bound Productions), and dropped four releases, including: his own debut, the Midnite release Bless Go Roun¹, Sista Kat¹s Inner Strength, and Biblical¹s Inborn Precepts. Javaughn has charted very high for a release that¹s only been out for several months. I had an early version of ³Present Of Love,² made at the time Javaughn was eleven or twelve, and thouroughly enjoyed it some years ago‹it sounds even better now! The fresh young vocals are delivered with exhuberence and heart, with loving lyrics clean and conscious, the instrumental backing crisp with every note and full of energy. Superstar will sure to move yah, and if Javaughn, as well as chart entrants Mark Wonder and I Wayne, are any indication: the tradition of conscious roots music is in good hands. Just in case you are not familiar with the whole concept of Carnival, we have a break down of the Caribbeans largest, Trinidad & Tobago, which is the mother of them all & the basis for all overs. Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival is not just one festival, but a series of festivities sandwiched in between Christmas and Ash Wednesday. It culminates in a two-day street parade, where costumed masqueraders party to the sounds of sweet soca and calypso music along the various parade routes on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, the two days that precede Ash Wednesday. The duration of the Carnival season varies because Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of the 40-day Christian Lenten period of reflection, that ends with the moveable feast of Easter. Carnival is usually six to ten weeks long, during which time this twin-island country is buzzing with activity including the play-offs of the premier Pan (steelband), Calypso and Mas competitions of the world. The transformation wrought by costume and music has been called Mas, and used to refer to children, adults, individually or in bands, costumed for street or stage parades. It was also out of attempts to suppress the drum that the steelband eventually emerged. Now simply called pan, it is the only musical instrument invented in the last century. The panyards practice late into the night as Panorama, the steelband competitions, draw near The mas camps are where the costumes for the big bands are being distributed. Fetes, pan, calypso and mas events are planned in towns and villages all over the two islands, but mainly in and around Port of Spain. Then ultimately its over to Tobago, sea baths and post-Carnival shows. Lastly, Peter Simon visits South Florida in support of his new book 'Reggae Scrapbook.' He will be doing an autograph signing, dj & have a slide show of his photos at Reggae Sundays at Jazid on Miami Beach Sunday Jan 20. One can feel the vibes instantaneously. There¹s something about the look emanating from his spirit as he is considering his words that belies an ancient Rastafarian spirit, the soul essence of who Winston van Ewyk, aka Winstrong the Soul Rebel is. Born October 12, 1971 in a Suriname River village, Winstrong came up in a family of musicians. His mother, Augustina Rensch was a school teacher who always took the time to sing falsetto in circle with family and friends. It was Augustine who influenced Winstrong early, encouraging him to sing and perform in front of anyone and everyone since before he could walk. ³My moms was the first to tell me I had special talent. She used to tell everyone, ³Dis kid has somethingŠwatch disŠand I¹d come up with songs and performances for dem. That was such a blessing; she gave me something to live up to.² He¹s been singing ever since. Flash forward to spring, 2007, and Winstrong is emerging into the spotlight with his newly-released album "Eye of the Storm"; Winstrong fuses roots dancehall style with today's sophisticated R&B and Soul for an explosive sound that is already pleasing listeners worldwide. From the soul and dance vibes of "For Your Love," to the militant and uplifting sounds of his first single "Sounds of Guns," Winstrong illustrates the reality of everyday tough life into focus and promises a solution in Jah Rastafari. Winstrong is currently based in Northern California, after spending the last couple of years in Hawaii recording records and performing. The Suriname singer was born into Rasta, and has a steady stream of conscious music emanating from the depths of his spirit. With his soulful voice, and an ultra high energy stage show, Winstrong has just what it takes to grab an audience and keep them engaged for hours. Winstrong has performed with and is featured on compilations with some of the industry's best; from Capleton, Sizzla, Prince Malachi, Tony Rebel and Black Uhuru's Mikal Rose to Hip Hop Stars Wu Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Warren G and the bay area's own Delinquents. Today's genre-centered music industry prefers easy categories, however, with Winstrong's roots based music, infused with dancehall and hip hop styles, he is able to clearly to defy those categories. Armed with his guitar, and strengthened by his lifetime study of Rastafari, Winstrong's music is inspirational, and he is ready to lead the evolution of Reggae Music. The year 2008 is a very exciting one for Winstrong as it marks the year the artist will be breaking into the international market. Winstrong is more than ready to fly forward into the scene with two records on the way. Producer Ryan Daisley has put the finishing touches on the first album, "Eye of the Storm" at Shaolin Studios in Oakland. Look for the "Eye of the Storm² featuring Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, now released and available directly from this website.
