Board Elections results Date: Sunday, January 20, 2008 9:48 PM From: "Tom Pearson" Here is the Final R.A.W. Board Election results report. I am sending to the current board and all candidates now, and will be sending to the RAW Forum and as a separate on-line members email within 24 hours. 762 Election ballots snail mailed on Nov 12, 2007 56 ballots were returned as "Unable to forward" as member had moved and not updated address. For all such ballots, I checked to see if there was an email listed for the member in the RAW database. If there was (for 40 members), I sent an email to all addresses listed in the database that same day to try and obtain an updated address. 16 members whose ballot was returned did not have an email address listed in the database. If the member responded and there was enough time remaining, I re-sent the ballot by snail mail (11 ballots re-sent by snail mail). If it was too close to the deadline to ensure snail mailing would be received in time, I sent an email version of the ballot and asked the member to print it out, vote and snail mail it back to me (8 ballots re-sent by email). A final total of 87 Ballots (11.4% return) were received by stated deadline of Jan 14, 2007 (Jan 15 in Guam) 5 Ballots were received after deadline (as of Jan 18, 2008 Guam time) and are not counted in the final totals listed below. Thousands of Tourists Coming for Jazz Festival Tourist arrivals, particularly in Montego Bay, are on the upswing, with thousand of visitors coming into the island for the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival , scheduled for January 24 to 26. The music festival, now rated as one of the top 10 events in the world, will be held at its home base, the Aqueduct, for the second consecutive year. The venue is located in Rose Hall, opposite the Rose Hall Great House. According to Walter Elmore, Executive Producer of the show, all aspects of the production for this year's show were falling neatly into place. "All the sky boxes have been framed up, we are putting the floors in now, and the equipment for the stage and the roof is here. The equipment coming from overseas has been shipped and is at sea on its way, so everything is on stream," he told JIS News. He pointed out that a new entrance road to the venue was complete, with a new underpass from the dualized Rose Hall highway put in, with the aim of correcting the traffic congestion, which was evident at last year's show. "The whole idea behind this festival is to bring tourists to Jamaica in the slow period," he said, adding that the show has been shifted from the September/October period in its early years of 1996/1997 to the last weekend in January in more recent years, because of prevailing weather conditions and suggestions from the airlines and hoteliers. "Now it is one of, if not the busiest period of time in the entire calendar year for tourism in Jamaica," he said, pointing out that travellers to Jamaica for the show are making reservations in hotels for the following year's show when they check out each year. Mr. Elmore said that for the period leading up to the show there would be no available rooms in the city. "The hardcore fact is yes, the hotels are absolutely full, the guest houses are also full, so it's a major impact for the tourism sector," he said. Turning to the charitable aspect of the show, he explained that the producers of the show, Turnkey Productions, recently adopted the Palmyra Foundation as its official charity. The Foundation's main aim is to furnish all the primary school children of St. James with the necessary and relevant text books. Mr. Elmore expressed the hope that with the help that would be coming from the Festival, the project could be extended islandwide. Source: JIS back to top <#top> Bob ³Am² Legend If there were any doubt left in the world about the immense influence and power of the music of Bob Marley, the film I Am Legend should have dispelled it by now. The film, starring Will Smith, and which grabbed seventy seven million dollars in its opening weekend, incorporates tracks from the Gong at central and emotional points throughout the film, pointing to the relevance of the tunes which although recorded several years ago, still hold Universal messages applicable to several situations in several societies. The main character Robert Neville (Will Smith) is so inspired by the motivational and positive lyrics of Bob, that he names his daughter Marley. To him, she is the symbol of hope, just as Bob appeared in the eyes of the millions who listened to his lyrics. Very early in the film, he reflects on his less then perfect reality. Heıs the only man alive, and heıs surrounded by some not so friendly night-walking half humans. Heıs working on a cure for the affliction that has destroyed mankind, and the walls of his world are closing in quickly. Thatıs the time he put in the Gongıs CD and played Three Little Birds. What better lyrics for when the world is boiling? As the tune rings out in this early scene, he belches the notes, bathes his dog Samantha, reflects on his situation, then locks down his house and prepares for a hostile night. The next day, he picks up right up where he left off and drops the CD in his SUV as he drives through a deserted New York. Marleyıs message of survival and positive thinking were his tool and shield in the film against the aggressive and torturous world in which he lived. Further reference is made to Bob Marley himself later on in the film. When he is rescued from certain death by a Good Samaritan who takes him to his house, he gets into a discussion that captures the essence of what Marley represents. ³He had this idea, that by injecting love into peoplesı lives, he could change them. The people trying to make the world worse are not taking a day off, so he saw how he could lighten up the darkness,² Smith explained in the film. What better words to capture the essence of Marley. The world has long known of his influence, but time and time again, the popular culture of several first world countries always makes reference to the themes of his tunes. back to top <#top> Young Movers - Ballaz Productions Ballaz Productions actually got started when Damon Hall and Nigel Whitfield met at Utech, from that they developed a business relationship from their collective love of music. Damon decided to get accredited instruction in audio engineering, so he attended a college in Canada that specialized in that. Ironically, it was this experience abroad that gave the Ballaz an opportunity that most young people in the music industry would die for, a chance to work with some of the foremost players in Jamaican music. Damon explains. ³I was working on an album for Carlene Davis by Tommy Cowan studios and they call in Birch to play keyboards. And dem time deh Pro Tools was the new ting, so Birch came in was using Pro Tools and him ask me how mi know fi use Pro Tools so good. I told him I went to school for it, so him seh Big Yard a build a new studio, yuh nuh, so mi a rope yuh in. So him bring down to meet Robert and from that me and Nigel started to work at Big Yard.² So in almost fairy tale fashion, the Ballaz became the original engineers for Big Yard, when that label finally opened their Jamaican studios. As engineers they have worked with industry stalwarts such as Dave Kelly, Sly and Robbie, Shaggy, Robert Livingston and Christopher Birch and have worked on: Weddy Time and Ready to Party for Voicemail, Keeping it Jiggy for Elephant Man and Jump Off riddim which included Vbyz Kartelıs hit Stamma. After that round of success, the Ballaz then decided that they needed to take the next step which was actually producing tracks under their own label. Which they have done with remarkable success considering the overall nature of the music industry which sometimes rewards not the best quality but what is deemed the most popular. The Ballaz, however, has made a splash in the industry with their productions which include the riddims: Spanish Fly, Grimey, Buckle Up and Rat Poison. And for the New Year, Ballaz have several new projects: Terro 3000 feat. Camar Daddy, Terro 3000 In My Life, Monster Empire Take Over, Voicemail feat. Richie Feelings Goodas Gone A Lead and Voicemail Gangalee. They are also busy with the management of their artiste, Terro 3000 which they plan to distribute a free album showcasing his music to be initially released locally with plans for eventual release in London, Miami and New York. To top it all off they are also working on a Voicemail and Machel Montano single for Trinidad carnival season. Here is a sample of a couple of their latest tracks: Terro 3000 feat. The Turnkey Productions president informed that Observer that, "Taj Mahal is ill and his doctor has advised him not to travel". At the same time, Elmore expressed pleasure at the replacement. "Koko Taylor is the perfect choice for Saturday night. I was looking for a great blues act and that is what she is, an amazing artiste and performer," Elmore said. "Patrons are certainly in for a treat with Koko Taylor, she is a lyrical powerhouse," he added, noting too that he thoroughly scouted around before making a final decision. Elmore's decision, it seems, coincides with entertainment bible Rolling Stone's appraisal of Taylor, heralding her as, "the great female blues singer of her generation who possesses deep soul and raw vocal power". That aside, Taylor has secured three nominations for the 2008 Blues Music Awards for her 2007 release, Old School. Her return to music after a seven-year hiatus has earned her nods in the album, Song and Traditional Blues Female Artiste of the Year categories. In addition, an album cut written by Koko, Gonna Buy Me A Mule, has been nominated for Song of the Year. "I worked long and hard on Old School and I want my fans to enjoy it as much as I do," Taylor said. Over the course of her almost 50-year career, Taylor has received just about every award the blues world has to offer and then some. "Blues is my life, it is a feeling that comes from the heart, not just something that comes out of my mouth," Taylor added, "I put my heart and soul into everything I do." Born Cora Walton on September 28, 1935 to a sharecropper's family in Memphis, Tennessee, Taylor's love for music grew out of the songs she'd sing working in the cotton fields during the week, and in a Baptist church choir on Sundays. Her career had its beginnings in 1953, when she went north with Robert 'Pops' Taylor, a cotton trucker twelve years her senior, whom she met in Memphis and married in Chicago that same year. With 'Pops' playing guitar and Koko singing, they went to the rowdy South and West Side neighbourhood 'juke joints', where they often sat in with the performers. "Sometime, the place would be full but sometimes it might end up being sixty people there that night. You know, it never was a crowd like three or four hundred people - you know, it wasn't like that. We'd have sometimes maybe sixty people there and if it was a good night it might be eighty, ninety people," Taylor said of her days in the juke joints. The first songs she ever sang on-stage, she told Living Blues magazine and the Chicago Tribune, were I Idolize You, an old Tina Turner song, and Make Me Feel Good, Kiddio, by Brook Benton - the only two songs she knew. She has taken her music from these small clubs on the South Side of Chicago to giant festivals and continues to perform all over the world. This time around she is coming to the shores of Jamaica for another performance and will no doubt thrill blues fans. Also booked to perform alongside her on the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues festival are Diana Ross, Mary Mary, Billy Ocean and Nikki Yanofsky. Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival is one of the premiere events of the entertainment calendar and for 2008 females are dominating the line up. Dubbed the ŒArt of Musicı women such as Diana Ross, Jill Scott and Anita Baker will be showing the men how jazz is done. While there are countless men on the show it is the women that are headlining each night, each with their own special flavor. The festival kicks off on Thursday January 24 with eight time Grammy winner Anita Baker. Baker is a multi-talented rhythm and blues soul singer, composer and producer who has been in the business for over twenty years. Known for hit songs such as Caught up in the Rapture, No One in the World, Just Because and Same Ole Love. Baker has blazed a place for herself among the greats. In fact Anita Baker is one of the few artists of that time that is widely recognized by her first name alone. Baker has only just returned to music after a long absence and is anxious to showcase her talent on the stage once again. Friday night will see the appearance of the young and talented sensual yet smoothing voice of Jill Scott. Scott will be a special treat for young fans that have fallen in love with her poetic style. Jill Scott is a Grammy award-winning American R&B soul and jazz singer, songwriter, actress and poet. Scott began her performing career as a spoken word artist, appearing at live poetry readings to perform her work before going into music. The singer is known for hits such as You Got Me, Cross My Mind and A Long Walk. As a vocalist Scott manages to infuse jazz, R&B, spoken word and hip hop among other genres to create a distinct style that many refer to as neo soul. Her diversity makes her a prime performer for the Jazz and Blues stage. Last but far from least is the diva of all divas, Diana Ross. A former member of the all female group, the Supremes, Ross branched out into a solo career in 1970. Dubbed the ŒMost Successful Female Music Artist Of The 20th Century;ı Rossı musical repertoire spans the genres of R&B, soul, pop, disco and jazz. During the 1970s and into the early to mid 1980s, Ross became the most successful female artist of the rock era, while crossing over into film, television and Broadway. Ross is known for songs such as All of You, Swept Away, Missing You and the UK number-one single Chain Reaction, among others. Ross is highly noted for energetic performances and powerful vocals who always aims to please fans far and wide, planning to dazzle at the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival . While these divas may steal the spotlight they arenıt the only female line up at the Festival. Out of Jamaica acts such as reggae singer Etana, young classical violinist Jessica Yapp and the experienced Marjorie Whylie are just a few of the females ready to rock this yearıs Jazz and Blues as divas of the music. back to top <#top> Stephen Marley levels 'Mind Control' The sons of reggae prodigy Bob Marley continue to celebrate the legacy of their father by constantly bringing home and having a presence in the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Grammy Awards. This time around it is Stephen Marley who has been nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award in the Reggae Category for his album Mind Control. "It is a real proud moment for me to be celebrating such a honourable nomination in the same year the Grammy Awards celebrates its 50th year. It feels like I have been asked to be a part of historical musical achievement and not so much to accept an award," Marley said. Growing up as a fruit of the Marley tree has humbled Stephen, and while he accepts that even being nominated for the award is a significant achievement, he remains adamant that with or without the Grammies the music of the Marleys will continue to live on. "I am grateful to be sharing the experience of the nomination with veterans like Sly and Robbie. That for me is one of the greater honours of the invitation," he said. Stephen says the nomination is proof that he has achieved in the industry. The Marley musical sons have always been a force to reckon with, and Stephen is persistent in supporting the corner posts of this organisation. He feels to some extent that he has achieved this with Mind Control, which is delivered with amazing vocal buoyancy and emotion. "My father has built and laid the foundations for a full-blown Marley family renaissance," said Stephen as he drifts into the ambience of his musical success and the reality of his legacy. "With Mind Control I feel like I have contributed to the strengthening of that backbone." The album is one that reflects who Stephen has become as a musician. It is rich in confidence, lyrical diversity and culture. The mystique of Stephen's personality is translated into his music. "I accept the mystery of my individuality; that is who I am and I am not prepared to let that go," he said. "I am the baby of the Melody Makers and through the music I have 'organically' broken away as Stephen. No effort was placed into that transition; it was my duty to accept the legacy that the 'Master', who is also my mentor, left for us, and I will continue to work hard to maintain it." The dedication that Stephen puts into his work is reflected in the quality that he presents to his audience. Listening to the husky melody of Stephen's voice is like listening to a dynasty of classic reggae lyrics spoken through the lips of a true 'servant of the almighty', a term he uses to describe himself. The intimacy of his voice produces sounds that could easily soothe the lion of Judah. The invitation to witness the acoustic recording of Mind Control at the Bob Marley museum on the first Saturday in 2008 could not be turned down. Watching the intricacy of Stephen's fingers as he caressed his guitar while warming up to Iron Bars, the fourth track on Mind Control, was enough to convey the passion he feels for his music. "My aim is to make a difference, I do what I do with a lot of passion and I will do that from my soul until I shall pass away," Stephen said to The Sunday Gleaner. "Mind Control for me is like a basket of fruits. Each song will carry a special message for different people. For me it carries one of the most important messages I ever had to deliver." The message he refers to is one that highlights the ubiquitous elements of mental slavery within society. "Whether it is the freedom from colour, creed or class slavery it is like my father said, too many of us 'stand aside and look'. The fight in us seems to be disappearing," he said. Stephen narrows it down to our submissive attitude towards mental slavery. "Today's youth cannot afford to stray any farther from reality. It is important to find power from within to keep up the fight. As long as there is even a glitch of weakness, mankind will always be chained to social dictation," he said. Every opportunity Stephen gets to teach is done through music. The youngest son of Rita Marley reinforced that "knowledge is power, and power without knowledge leaves room for societal breakdown". Stephen's musical style is one that is unique and sets him apart from his brothers. He admits that in previous years he would often be mistaken for Ziggy. Stephen says his music is tailor-made from an open-minded musical vibe, but ultimately the production is an invitation for his fans to share in the essence of his spirit. He decided to do an acoustic recording of Mind Control because he believed that the time was right for him to 'promote his guitar' and get personal with his audience. "I think the melody of the acoustic beat takes it straight to the heart of audience," he confided. "It was the first approach to the album and the experience was very deep. The people loved it, so I decided to re-record after the main release." Stephen Marley holds the most Grammy wins in the Reggae Category. Actually, this most diverse, colourful and entertaining musical aggregation is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and already there are plans for some exciting activities to mark this important milestone. For more than three decades the Reggae Ambassadors' all-embracing artistic vision has made them one of island's most successful acts, and their body of works to date is a testimony to the vibrancy of this enduring group. One of the events under review to celebrate Third World's achievement is their 1978 theatrical production called Explanations, written and directed by noted psychiatrist Dr Fred Hickling. "Right now we're going to talk about Third World first, as you know, Third World is the head. Whatever Cat, and me and Richie do outside of Third World come after Third World," jives the band's lead vocalist, William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke who, at the same time, is straddling his own solo career. "This year, 2000 and love, I love that yuh see bless," chimes the chirpy entertainer, "2000 and love, Third World celebrates 35 years, and this year we're going to host our 35th anniversary on the Lawns of King's House, and we're looking at Sunday, December 28." Elaborating on the plans for the year ahead, Bunny Rugs explained: "Third World always comes with new ideas and take the music to a different level. And I think it's time now that we come with something a little different than just a regular show where artistes just come on and sing two tunes. What we would love to do, is something like the Explanations again, the theatrical production and music where you have drama and dancing and them kind of stuff." Not wanting to use the word, Bunny Rugs, with his particular spin on things, hinted at a reunion of sorts when he said; "I feel in order for that (Explanations) to be effective, and really have any form of meaning, we are going to need to talk to Michael "Ibo" Cooper, William "John Lee" Stewart, Irvin "Carrot" Jarrett and Prilly Hamilton. Thirty-five years is a hell of a milestone for any one group. It's a celebration, not a reunion, because in Third World we have not really separated as such." However, the above-mentioned names are all former "Worlers", as since 1997, they no longer perform with the group. Interestingly, two years ago Jarrett joined his former bandmates in concert on the lawns of King's House, after which he confessed in an interview with this newspaper that "It was sobering." When asked about the likelihood of him reuniting with the band, Jarret, who was performing with the group for the second time since he left in 1984, admitted, "I thought of it, it's very possible, it's always possible and it may happen..." The members were replaced by Leroy Romans, Tony Williams and Rupert Bent Jr. Click here for the full story. back to top <#top> No Stopping Lutan Fyah There seems to be no stopping Lutan Fyah; coming off a successful festive season Lutan Fyah is now gearing up for the release of his latest album dubbed 'Old Capitol' along with numerous shows slated for the New Year. As a result, Syrenıs singing/songwriting style was influenced by Caribbean rhythms as well as North American beats. Her (as of yet untitled) debut album due in spring/summer 2008 on SRC Records blurs the barriers that separate countries, cultures and musical genres. The albumıs first single Somebody Come Get Me details the wrath of a woman scorned as sung over an irresistible one-drop beat. Other tracks include It Kills Me, a powerful R&B track with Syren displaying a broad range of dazzling vocal talents. The sweet melody of Soon Youıll Forget Me belies its heartbreaking sentiment and Sad Songs, destined to be a future soul classic, is stamped with a subtle yet distinctive Caribbean lilt. Because of her ability to skillfully shift between American and Caribbean musical forms, Syren is comfortable performing anywhere. She has opened for Robin Thicke and Keyshia Cole at the House of Blues; she appeared alongside topflight reggae artists at the annual Raggamuffins (formerly Bob Marley) festival; she has shared the stage with celebrated rapper Lupe Fiasco and performed at the NBA Players Association Conference Gala among other engagements on her busy schedule. ³I come with a fresh, unique sound; I definitely have a different genre of music, a mix of what I am culturally,² says Syren. ³I try to be a strong performer, powerful singer and an honest yet imaginative writer (she co wrote Dem Haters on Rihannaıs sophomore album A Girl Like Me). Music has changed a lot, and Iım trying to bring back what I think has been missing. Fans really want to listen to singer/songwriters who tell stories, create moods with their songs and perform with their bands; I give them an old school approach but with a contemporary sound.² Here is a sample of Somebody Come Get Me AC_FL_RunContent( 'type','application/x-shockwave-flash','data','http://www.headlinejamaica.co m/newsletter/media/player.swf','id','audioplayer4','height','24','width','29 0','src','http://www.headlinejamaica.com/newsletter/media/player','flashvars ','playerID=4=http://www.headlinejamaica.com/newsletter/media/somebody_e.mp3 ','quality','high','menu','false','wmode','transparent','movie','http://www. headlinejamaica.com/newsletter/media/player' ); //end AC code back to top <#top> Trinidad's music pirates of the Caribbean As the latest soca music blares out from huge speakers at popular Trinidad nightspot Smokey and Bunty's, one song stands out more than most. It begins with a voice saying: "Hello Suzy, I have your $100 phone card here for you." Then it launches into an unlikely tale of a man being pursued by a woman who only wants him because he can afford to subsidise her mobile phone habit. Phone Card, by veteran performer Crazy, is one of the most controversial new tunes in the run-up to next month's Trinidad and Tobago carnival, because of the double meaning in its lyrics. The Trini tendency to pronounce the word "for" as "fuh" means that the song's seemingly innocent refrain, "She only want me fuh card", ends up sounding blatantly sexual. The tune has already made its mark in the charts published in two newspapers, the Sunday Punch and the Bomb. The only thing is that there is no legitimate way of buying it at the moment. If you go into one of the rapidly dwindling local record shops and ask for it, you will be sadly disappointed. Yet the main shopping area in central Port-of-Spain is full of street vendors with illegal copies. From a cart behind a truck parked in Charlotte Street, a man is selling a range of CDs in slimline cases with badly-photocopied covers. The music on view is all reggae, dancehall, R&B and rap. But in response to the question, "You have any soca?", he pulls out another set of discs hidden in a black plastic bag. They turn out to be home-made compilations featuring Crazy's tune along with other new sounds from local artists - proof that Trinidad's record industry has been all but overwhelmed by the music pirates of the Caribbean. SOJA has risen to the forefront, picking up right where the Brains left off creating their own blend of conscious roots music entwined with the traditional rhythms of reggae, it ³comes across with passion and depth.² (Washington Post ı06) That said, SOJA is not that easy to define. Although they are rooted in reggae, they are not limited to it; their fan-base reflects this with a very diverse population. The music includes and embraces all walks of life - it has no prejudice it is for everyone. The band grew up listening to reggae, hip-hop, and rock. In their sound, reggae became the predominate influence because it is dedicated to a real message and promotes revolution. Jah Sun is an artist that is LIVE-icated to global and social healing. Fusing the sounds of hip-hop, reggae and world music with conscious and uplifting lyrics, his message always finds its way to your heart. Jah Sun's debut album "The Height of Light" truly lives up to its name. The project features some of reggae's top recording artists such as Luciano, Junior Reid, Lutan Fyah and grammy award winner Yami Bolo. Jah Sun displays a wide variety of styles, with hard hitters like "Nuff a Dem" to sweet ballads like "Circles and Cycles" to unforgettable roots anthems such as "More Love". In a industry full of ***, bling and violence, Jah Sun is like a breath of fresh air. He brings the message of love and unity to the world and awakens the human spirit. Oregon 21 and over $12.00 Doors at 7 PM Show at 8 PM If you had to peg Paula Fuga into a certain music genre, it would be almost impossible. But if you had to? Something like modern Hawaiian soul might suffice. Paula is fueled by the grit and glamour of love. She is as tortured by it as she is inspired. And this is why everyone can relate to her. She is complex, intelligent and real with the depth and passion to become an icon. In May, Paula released her self-produced, all original debut album, Lilikoi, a blend of tradition and evolution: soul and jazzinfused lyrics sprinkled with Hawaiian language, organic instruments like the nose flute and Œukulele, and a voice filled with so much soul, youıre guaranteed to become an instant fan. Internationally, Paula is known as the Hawaiian songstress wearing the ³Big Girls Rock² shirt, strumming her Œukulele all the way to Hollywood on American Idol. Locally, she is known as Paula, solo artist and singer for Hawaiian roots reggae band DubKonscious, regular at Hawaiıi Poetry Slams, educational interpreter at Bishop Museum and active member of Hawaiiıs cultural community. In the recording industry, Paula is a rising star who has been likened to a Hawaiian Lauryn Hill is endorsed as a fresh sound by established artists like Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Nick Hexum of band 311. Paulaıs performance at the 2006 Kokua Festival induced chicken skin throughout the audience. She recently recorded a song she wrote with Jack Johnson called ³Country Road² for the Mana Maoli CD, which benefits Native Hawaiian public charter schools. She is a representative of Hawaiian culture in her music and daily life, but at the same time possesses a unique sound that is universally appealing. ³bold, hypnotic music ³ Wayne Harada (Honolulu Advertiser) ³there is too much innovative talent here for the meaning of ³Hawaiian music² to not evolve.²- Lesa Griffith (Honolulu Weekly) http://www.paulafugamusic.com/ The Girlas consist of 3 women working together to perform original music with a mix of folk, acoustic, blues, soul, and bluegrass. Of these women are: Candy Diaz Yasuda: a singer/song writer with a penchant for old torch jazz Carly Smith: a singer/song writer with a heavy background in bluegrass as well as the daughter of reknown bluegrass musician Ty Smith Kelli Heath: a singer/song writer with amazing talent for guitar composition, slack key, and witty lyrics. Under the collective title, The Girlas, Kelli, Candy, & Carly began collaborating amongst one another to create a genre of music that incorporates all aspects of their individual skill. The debut release of ³Now of Never² was met with much appreciated enthusiam. Jamie Winnpenny of the Honolulu Weekly wrote, ³Their lyrical content is poignant rather than preachy, their instrumental prowess is informed rather than forced and their harmonies are inspired.² Wayne Harada of the Honolulu Advertiser said, ³"The harmonies are sweet; the lingering passions sweeter. Think Na Leo with attitude and soul. The Girlas are great because they're both unpredictable and prolific." John Berger of the Star Bulletin had this to say, ³Each introspective composition seems more exquisite than the other. Whether they're singing of heartbreak, troubled relationships or an enigmatic encounter with angels, the Girlas are an enchanting discovery for fans of smooth pop music.² Blessed to have shared the stage with names like Hapa, Herb Ohta Jr, Maki Ohguro, Don Carlos, Johnny Winter, Victoria Vox, & Ernie Halter, The Girlas recently participated in Jack Johnsonıs 2007 Kokua Festival alongside Matt Costa, Ernie Cruz. Growing up in a Rastafarian community in St Mary, he was taught drumming from a very young age. It wasnıt long before he could out-play the very teachers who had instructed him. Nyabinghi music, a combination of chanting and the playing of at least three hand drums, was played at Rastafarian Grounations a celebration and affirmation of life through the earth which occur each year at around the 21st of April and last for several days. The young Ras was fascinated and inspired by this music, and formed his own group of drummers, The Sons of Negus, and founded his own record label, Zion Disc. Through this label, he and The Sons Of Negus released a collection of singles during the mid Œ60s focusing on the Nyabinghi sound with the addition of guitars and bass. Michael would work at Coxone Doddıs legendary Studio One as a session musician, payment being his own slice of studio time. His first album was Dadawah Peace And Love, recorded in the early Œ70s with an augmented studio band. It sowed the seeds of the eclectic mix of Nyabinghi, gospel, funk and reggae that would later characterize the "Culture Reggae sound". (Clem Bastow, Stylus Magazine) Ras Michael has worked, recorded and performed with some of the most legendary reggae musicians, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry, Burning Spear, Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. He performed with Bob Marley at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica in 1978, one of the most memorable music events of all time. Later that year, while in Paris, Marley was asked what he thought of Ras Michael. "Ras Michael is a roots master and a Nyabinghi specialist" he said. He tells it like it is." While Ras Michael's music is drawn from an amalgam of biblical and African chants, he distinguished himself from the other drummers in the early Rastafarian movements by forging the connection between the traditional hand drums and the modern electric instruments used in commercial music, thereby taking his message of equal rights and unity from a few scattered communities in Jamaica's parishes out to the entire world. In addition to acting as an evangelist, ambassador and diplomat for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tawahido Church internationally, Ras Michael is one of the founders and president of the Rastafarian International/Marcus Garvey Culture Center in Los Angeles, and the Fly Away Culture Center in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a speaker, lecturer, and presenter, who launched The Smithsonianıs National Museum of Natural History's epic exhibition "Discovering Rastafari" on November 2, 2007. The epic exhibition tracing the international roots of Rastafariıs genesis and development and lasts through November 2, 2008. There is no artist alive today who has more continuously been the foremost exponent of Rasta tradition worldwide. Ras Michael continues to tour internationally and spread his light on hundreds of thousands of people around the world. See you at the shows! Check our www.pdxreggae.com for more shows. His original "reggabilly" songs and self-produced CDs have navigated the Grammy@ process, enlivened the Archives of Appalachia and represent "Contemporary Southern Appalachian Culture and Music" in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He's been featured on Country Music Television, PBS and NPR stations nationwide. He is a devoted father, architect, carpenter and organic gardener. He lives in the mountains just hours from where he was born into a large, close-knit family and continues to pick Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers tunes with his father and uncles at various reunions and yearly gatherings. He plays a flat top guitar he built in 1980. Red Pepper Records is pleased to present Ras Alan Childres and his "1993-2008: 15 Years of Appalachian Reggae" solo acoustic show Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the Down Home, Johnson City, TN's famed eclectic music room. Doors open at 6pm for dinner and the show begins at 9pm. Several of Ras Alan's CDs will be available for sale at the performance. "Regular songs about regular life... and a desire to do better." Ras Alan's music reflects a life of observing and learning, trying and failing, and trying again. He teaches "Respect" in his "One HeartBeat- Appalachia to Zimbabwe" children's programs, shares intimate "everyman" daily struggles in his songs and shines a flashlight-ray of Hope into the future and our place in it. Ras Alan's first "Appalachian Reggae" CD was released on his own label in the Spring of 1993. NATIVE met critic's favor by its' original take on storytelling to the pulsing reggae beat, rather than a mere copying of style or mimicry of a popular Caribbean accent and song form. STONE INNA HURRICANE, a live album recorded on the road during 1995-1996, was released on CD in 1997 and quickly sold out due to its' going straight to radio in markets that "got" the stories, rhythm and message. In 2002, the more "pop" music elements of LETTER FROM APPALACHIA found Ras Alan's greatest audience listening and dancing to his stories framed by thicker production and studio artistry: simple and decorative at the same time. The Smithsonian Institution and the research committees for the "Year of Appalachia" found what they were looking for in Ras Alan's music and narrative. He was invited to perform 10 shows on the National Mall in Washington, DC for the 37th Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the subsequent "Smithsonian to the Mountains Tour", working alongside the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, based in Bristol TN/VA. Ras Alan's 2006 CD FOLKLIFE gathers his honest live performances in Washington, heard by thousands of the 1.5 million visitors and condenses the huge experience into an hour long tincture of homestyle ingenuity and front porch celebration. Ras Alan has recently performed in festivals and stage shows in Jamaica and the United States with popular bands and creative musicians including The Avett Brothers, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Steel Pulse, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Toubab Krewe, Steep Canyon Rangers, Uncle Earl, the everybodyfields, The Waybacks, Keller Williams, The Grascals, Rhonda Vincent, The Seldom Scene and many others. Currently Ras Alan is "pleasantly involved" in preproduction of a studio album of new material. 2008 represents the 15th year of Ras Alan's "Appalachian Reggae" and his original reggabilly tunes will be featured alongside anecdotes, stories and instruments gathered along his musical odyssey, weaving mountain cultural traditions with global rhythmic inspiration. Come join your friends and neighbors on Saturday, February 2, at 9pm for a glimpse into a musical seeker's life, a poet's warehouse and a regular guy with an irregular beat. The Down Home is located at 300 West Main Street in Johnson City, TN. Tickets are $10 at the door. The phone number is 423-929-9822. PICK IT UP & DROP IT SEAN PAUL ATLANTIC Amy Winehouse has a clear attraction to black music. Her first album, Frank, had strong jazz influences, and Back to Black dug deep into Motown and classic soul. Sources tell The Daily Mirror out of England that Amy will make a pilgrimage to Bob Marley's home in Jamaica "for inspiration ahead of her third album." She may also work with Marley's son, Damian. She'll record the upcoming project at the late-singer's in-house studio. She's feeling what alot of us already know. "I love Jamaica and wanna feel Bob Marley's spirit when it comes to my music, and I wanna stay where he lived and hook up with Damian because he's a genius. I'm desperate to get over there." Winehouse has already dabbled with reggae in her live performances. During a set at last year's Glastonbury festival, she did a cover of Toots and the Maytals' "Monkey Man" - a track which later turned up on the deluxe release of Back to Black. Monique Hector on Monday Jan 14 claimed the National Calypso Queen title and $100,000 with her calypso, "Sisters Looking". Terri Lyons received a standing ovation from some patrons for her sterling performance of "Ah Vex". Karene Asche, who placed third, had the people in stitches as she performed "The Recipe", a song that provided the various ingredients and methods that one could use to create a Trinbagonian politician. Spicey, who came fourth with "D'Signs", a song that cautions women as well as men that they need to look carefully at certain behaviour patterns before committing to serious relationships. The competition featured 18 female calypsonians competing for the title. Caribbean Prestige Foundation, organizers of the International Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch, head businessman William Munro will step down and pass the baton to his fellow directors. Munro told Sunday Express, "This year's will be my last." In other soca news, Soca Banton took the road march title in 2006 with the song 'Ova your Head.' Two years later, Trinidadian Soca artiste Iwer George comes with a song similar in words and tempo, and incidentally, with the same name. Both men have now reached an agreement pledging to work together. The song has some similarities. In our new releases this weeks first from Music Video Distributors its 2 new dvds.
