I would like to invite human rights-interested RAW people to look into the Jamaica page that's been updated at Amnesty International USA. Check it at www.amnestyusa.org/Jamaica/More_information_on_Jamaica/page.do?id=1011312&n1 =3&n2=30&n3=927 . It's a 4000-word overview of the human rights issues facing Jamaica. Please note, too, that there will be a new major report on public security in Jamaica issued by AIUSA in March 2008. It will be accompanied by an online video concerning gun violence and human rights in Jamaica based on the new report and interviews conducted in October 2007 in several of the marginalized communities of Kingston. The human rights imperatives remain urgent for this beautiful and beleaguered nation. The per-capita rate of murder has been among the highest in the world for several years, to name but one factor. As a volunteer country specialist for AIUSA, I had the privilege of conducting interviews in that October 2007 trip, which took the AI-Caribbean team to Angola, Jonestown, Majesty Gardens, Trench Town, Waterhouse, Mountain View and other localities that have been riven by gang violence, extrajudicial police killings, political tribalism and other problems associated with poverty and violence. We talked to community organizers, ordinary folks and a few reggae artist-activists about their experiences and observations of gun violence. Though it will be relatively short, the video will be made available online to see along with the AIUSA report on Jamaica and the attendant campaign. In the meantime, check AIUSA's stuff on Jamaica and the wider Caribbean; there's some pretty pressing stuff going on in Haiti right about now. In the JA overview, I wanted not only to highlight AIUSA but the non-governmental organizations based in Jamaica that are doing the heavy lifting to improve human rights there, such as the Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights (IJCHR) and Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ). Big up, too, to Peace Management Initiative (PMI) for the outreach and development they're doing in Kingston. Everywhere I went in Kingston, people were biggin' up PMI. Here at long last are the Top Tens for 2007 from WORLD SPINS on KUNR 88.7 FM Reno. These releases have been featured strongly over the past couple of weeks on the show, and have been riding strong throughout the whole of 2007. I¹ve been deliberating with the text below, hence delaying the sendout you now have in front of youŠenjoy! 1) Manu Chao La Radiolina 2) Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective Watina 3) Ojos De Brujo Techari Remixes 4) Various Artists Global Dancefloor 5) Vieux Farka Toure Remixed: UFOs Over Bamako 6) B-Side Players Fire In The Youth 7) Gaudi + Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Dub Qawwali 8) Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale Breathing Under Water 9) Zap Mama Supermoon 10) Antibalas Security The Top Tens are compiled based on my entries to the CMJ (College Music Journal) Charts throughout the year. The more times a release entered, the higher its ranking on the chart. Any ties were broken according to the number of spins from the given tied releases (of which there were several). Manu Chao came in strong with his first studio release in three years. His unmistakable multi-lingual blend of rock, reggae, ska, and punk, textured with sirens and audio blips create a high-energy ride through songs dealing with broken hearts and street life, heartless politics and globalization. In contrast to La Radiolina¹s electrified pulse is Andy Palacio¹s And The Garifuna Collective¹s Watina. The Afro-Caribe Garifuna communities of Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras are struggling to keep traditional ways of life‹and music‹alive. Watina¹s oeuvre does so with acoustic vital beauty, in tracks that deal with unity, land rights, the struggles of making a daily living, teaching culture to the youth, and moreŠ As you may see, remix projects dominated my programming, this due in part to my own penchant for beat-driven material‹those sublime tracks that bring an element of traditional voices and instruments together with danceable beats created by various producers and DJs‹modern, cross-cultural fusion. Even though ³remix² isn¹t in the titles, both Global Dancefloor and Dub Qawwali most notably are remix projects. Producer/remix artist Gaudi has taken tracks originally voiced in the 60¹s and 70¹s by late great singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (perhaps the most notable Sufi devotional singer from Pakistan), and mixed them with reggae-influenced dub/electronic/ambient beats. The process was done with utmost respect for Khan¹s original vocals and phrasing, and yields an incredible musical journey into the words and melodies of peace by Nusrat. Also blending reggae influences into the mix are B-Side Players with the exciting Fire In The Youth. B-Side Players bring together elements of dancehall, reggae, Latin beats, funk for highly charged, revolutionary set. Flash the lighters!!! Speaking of revolutionary sets‹be sure to check Antibalas¹ Security. Afro-beat still is the ideal musical vehicle to carry social-political commentary into the ears and dancing feet of the listener. Anoushka Shankar carries on in the footsteps of her father the luminary sitar player Ravi Shankar (perhaps India¹s best-known cultural emissary), bringing the sitar to the realms of The West and western ears. She combines with tabla player/programmer/producer Karsh Kale on Breathing Under Water to weave a seductive spell of virtuosic sitar lines that float over percolating electro beats and lush ambient backgrounds. Sting and Anoushka¹s half-sister Nora Jones appear as guest vocalists. ³World Music² is a term that defies genre; it could be music from anywhere else besides ³Home.² So many diverse styles, cultural expressions and traditions are all too easily relegated to one category. World Spins makes the humble effort (in one hour per week) to find that thread of commonality that weaves its way through the myriad tapestries of music: from Africa to Latin America, from India to the Balkans, from Australia back to America, and beyond‹it is usually the heartbeat of rhythm, the ultimate crossroads where we can all meet to dance and groove to a common drummerŠTraditional sounds meet modern influences and resist homogenization, breeding music that is at once old and new‹these are the frontiers of ³World Music² as I hear themŠ It is in this spirit of discovery that I bid you: happy listening! The Duo Papa Michigan and General Smiley recorded their first number 1 hit Rub A Dub Style , followed by the equally popular Nice Up The Dance. The duo then recorded at Tuff Gong Studio the classic One Love Jamdown, produced by Jahmet Enwright, which was released as a double a-side with Freddie McGregors Jogging. Michigan And Smiley gave a dynamic performance at the annual Reggae Sunsplash Festival in 1981, which led to a debut appearance in the UK where they topped the bill at the Black Echoes Reggae Awards Show. In 1982 Henry Junjo Lawes productions dominated the dancehall introducing current DJs to a wider audience without attenuating the sound. Michigan And Smiley recorded a grim warning to prospective philanderers, Diseases, and the song inspired Yellowman to record an identical version alongside his sparring partner, Fathead. Throughout the 80s Michigan And Smiley sustained attention in the album charts with the releases Step By Step, Sugar Daddy, Back In The Biz and Reality Must Rule Again. The duo enjoyed a revival in the 90s when some of their earlier hits resurfaced through VP in the USA. Presently Michigan and Smiley still get Together for performances though they both are involve in their respective Projects within the realms of the art. His original "reggabilly" songs and self-produced CDs have navigated the Grammy@ process, enlivened the Archives of Appalachia and represent "Contemporary Southern Appalachian Culture and Music" in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He's been featured on Country Music Television, PBS and NPR stations nationwide. He is a devoted father, architect, carpenter and organic gardener. He lives in the mountains just hours from where he was born into a large, close-knit family and continues to pick Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers tunes with his father and uncles at various reunions and yearly gatherings. He plays a flat top guitar he built in 1980. Red Pepper Records is pleased to present Ras Alan Childres and his "1993-2008: 15 Years of Appalachian Reggae" solo acoustic show Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the Down Home, Johnson City, TN's famed eclectic music room. Doors open at 6pm for dinner and the show begins at 9pm. Several of Ras Alan's CDs will be available for sale at the performance. "Regular songs about regular life... and a desire to do better." Ras Alan's music reflects a life of observing and learning, trying and failing, and trying again. He teaches "Respect" in his "One HeartBeat- Appalachia to Zimbabwe" children's programs, shares intimate "everyman" daily struggles in his songs and shines a flashlight-ray of Hope into the future and our place in it. Ras Alan's first "Appalachian Reggae" CD was released on his own label in the Spring of 1993. NATIVE met critic's favor by its' original take on storytelling to the pulsing reggae beat, rather than a mere copying of style or mimicry of a popular Caribbean accent and song form. STONE INNA HURRICANE, a live album recorded on the road during 1995-1996, was released on CD in 1997 and quickly sold out due to its' going straight to radio in markets that "got" the stories, rhythm and message. In 2002, the more "pop" music elements of LETTER FROM APPALACHIA found Ras Alan's greatest audience listening and dancing to his stories framed by thicker production and studio artistry: simple and decorative at the same time. The Smithsonian Institution and the research committees for the "Year of Appalachia" found what they were looking for in Ras Alan's music and narrative. He was invited to perform 10 shows on the National Mall in Washington, DC for the 37th Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the subsequent "Smithsonian to the Mountains Tour", working alongside the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, based in Bristol TN/VA. Ras Alan's 2006 CD FOLKLIFE gathers his honest live performances in Washington, heard by thousands of the 1.5 million visitors and condenses the huge experience into an hour long tincture of homestyle ingenuity and front porch celebration. Kingston, Jamaica: -- The dreams of The Legend Bob Marley are realised in momentous staging of Smile Jamaica - Africa Unite at James Bond Beach on Saturday, February 23. To underscore the significance of this pairing, the Marley Brothers will assemble together for their first ever combined performance in Jamaica. Never before on Jamaica soil, have Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani and Damian Marley appeared together on a single stage, on a single night. The sheer magnitude of the combined concert event is further enhanced by their participation. In the five years since his last stage appearance in Jamaica Ziggy has released two critically acclaimed albums. He shook the industry with a Target stores only album release (at the time an unprecedented distribution deal for an independent) and then supported the re-release of Love Is My Religion with a coast to coast US tour. No stranger to the Grammys, Stephen was recently nominated for his first solo project, Mind Control. Arguably the longest anticipated album in reggae history, the indefinable roots reggae hip hop infused project catapulted Stephen into the limelight as an artiste. Brother Stephen helped produce Julianx2019;s sophomore set, A Time and Place. Echoing the voice of his father, Julianx2019;s music is reminiscent of a reggae style not easily found on store shelves, but loved the world over. Highly regarded as an actor, with a number of film projects under his belt, Ky-mani focused on his music in 2007. His first album in five years, Radio, and the lead single One Time, returned Ky-Mani to the Billboard charts. A junior giant, Damian rocked the industry with back to back Grammy Award winning albums (Half Wyay Tree and Welcome to Jamrock) and a slew of hardcore hits. Honing his performance skill with frequent collaborator x201C;Raggax201D;, Damian trod in the footsteps of his father, touring the world. Initially founded by Ziggy and Stephen Marley along with the Melody Makers, Ghetto Youths has been expanded to incorporate brothers Julian, Ky-mani and Damian. Now headed by Stephen, Ghetto Youths International is driving force behind the re-emergence of Smile Jamaica. Collaborating for the Smile Jamaica - Africa Unite stage is truly symbolic considering the significance of Smile Jamaica. In December 1976, Bob Marley, headlined the show at the National Heroes Park in Kingston. Despite being attacked the night before, he bravely and defiantly stepped out and said he would only do one song, but ended up working the stage for ninety minutes. Persons described the atmosphere of that show as x201C;buoyant and positivex201D;. It was a similar atmosphere in Ethiopia at the first ever Africa Unite concert in 2005. Realising the vision of Bob for a united continent, the Africa Unite concert was the culmination of symposiums, exhibitions and activities before an audience of 300,000. The Rita Marley Foundation, directed by Bobx2019;s widow, was instrumental in making this dream on Bob a reality. A combination of two remarkable concert events, Smile Jamaica - Africa Unite is the magnificent result of Ghetto Youths International in collaboration with the Rita Marley Foundation. Other performers sharing in the moment include: The Melody Makers (the Marley sisters Cedella and Sharon), the seminal The I Three (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt), Black Uhuru, Rasta talents Capleton, Taurrus Riley, Richie Spice, Spragga Benz, Lutan Fyah, Coco Tea and Alborosie, African Queens Etana and Queen Ifrica, musicians Dean Fraser and Ernie Ranglin, new comer Javaughn and sound systems Stone Love and Gully Bank. Adding diversity to programme are Mutabaruka, who can only be described as Mutabaruka, and the West Indian pop songstress, Rihanna. Thanks to the strong support of sponsors; reggae radio IRIE FM , the national station Television Jamaica , the afro centric Peoples Telecom , the Jamaica Tourist Board and The Gleaner , the Smile Jamaica-Africa Unite concert is offered to the public at $1,500.00 per person. Beyond the calendar, historians will record in their date book Saturday, February 23, James Bond Beach, Smile Jamaica - Africa Unite.
